We celebrate in United States, Canada and Europe The Remembrance Day / Veteran’s Day also known as Red Poppy day, To remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
The red poppy was immortalized in the famous poem, “In Flanders Fields,” written by a Canadian officer, Col. John McCrae, a physician, who was inspired by the flower. McCrae was intrigued with the poppy, which can lay dormant in the soil for years, and its ability to reappear in great numbers.
He immediately associated it and his deep respect for his veteran patients and deceased comrades and he wrote the poem for them. Eventually, the red poppy was used as a symbol of remembrance by the British, Canadian and American troops, and as a fundraiser to help their disabled veterans…
The poppy has become known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn and used by auxiliary members to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.
You will see members selling the famous red poppies in your community; please be generous and purchase many. You will be helping our resilient veterans in their attempt to live the peaceful life they so much deserve.

My five years in the service and then many years as a wife of a career officer gave me a chance to be part of a ‘special family”. It is easy to forget the many who have served and came home changed and hurt. Marie and Kelly thanks for the post.
Gina! Thank you for your service to our country, as well as your husband. My Dad served in WW II. He flew bombing missions in the Pacific. We’re lucky he came home.
I just got back from a memorial in our downtown park. They play Taps across the lake where there is another player answering back. It’s very moving.
There is a war museum in Saratoga, NY that preserves uniforms and other memorabilia from WW II. I sent Dad’s dress uniform and all the info I had that he had written down. They will research his service record and archive all of it together. There is no one to pass it down to so I thought it was the best thing to do! We’ve still got his leather flight jacket. I look at it every once in awhile and think about what Dad went through, even though I have no way to really imagine what hell it must have been. He never talked about it much. He just came home and got on with it! As did so many of the others!
On a funny note! He was stationed on Guam and we have a speeding ticket he got for going 35mph in a 15mph zone! That was Dad, always in a hurry to get where he was going and get it done!

Thanks Gina for remembering our heros. Veterans Day is the anniversary of my husbands death. He was a hero and an air force veteran. His “tile” is on the memorial in Upland and it will be dedicated today. I have bee invited to be there. We should all remember what they did for us. Joanie G
JoanieG! I’m sure this will be a memorable and bittersweet day for you. And thank you for your husband’s service to our country! I am sorry that you lost him but know they are all together swapping stories and having a grand old time! You can bet on it!!

Thank you Gina for your service. My father enlisted during the Korean war and died in a car accident when I was only 10 mos old. My uncle served as a Navy officer from Korea and Vietnam. Every Thursday morning I meet with a lovely group of gentlemen who regale me with stories of serving from WWII and on
( and I am the only woman and the moderator of the group, I don’t bring up my pirate past with them, heehee) Today I shall drive up to the National Cemetery and pat my respects to those who paid the ultimate price.
Thank you, Gina and your husband for your service. You and so many others are to be commended for giving of yourselves for the good of others.
We should all remember our veterans every day, not just on Remembrance Day.
My husband wears a poppy in his beret all year. It is the cause of much comment from many strangers who ask him about it. He was a hidden child in France during WWII and likes to tell people the Canadians landed about 100 kilometers due north of where he was being hidden. While not ultimately rescued by Canadian forces, who went into the Netherlands, he nevertheless feels very much indebted for all the veterans for their service.
Today when I went to Sunnybrook Hospital for a routine doctor’s appointment I was cheered to see whole swaths of lawn all over the complex full of small Canadian flags waving in the breeze. There were thousands of them everywhere you looked.
There is a large Veteran’s home on the hospital grounds and many of them were out and about. I was very glad to thank them for their service in person!
Gina: I want to thank you and your husband for your service. There is a website called “Move America Forward”. When I can, I send care packages to our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are so appreciative that we think of them. I can not forget them because they have fought and still fight and sacrifice their lives so that we can continue to have our freedoms here and everywhere. I saw many military planes flying in formation over my house today for all the celebrations that were occurring. It is such a special sight to see. Brings tears to my eyes. Thank you again, Gina. My husband was in WWII in the navy serving on a destroyer in
the South Pacific. He is no longer with us but he left many good
memories of the love he had for me and his four children……
and his fellowman, his state and his country.
I thank you and the many other men and women who made
possible the freedoms we have today. Never let us forget
that there is a cost to freedom. God bless our troups and
America.

Gina, thanks for this post! I have known three women Vets personally and they are all outstanding citizens! You are number four! Thanks to all, men and women, who have given so much for our freedoms! At present we have two grandsons who are in the military and we are so proud of them!☆☆☆☆♡♡♡♡
