5 Perfect Cover Versions of Classic Italian Songs

Italy has an incredibly rich musical history that continues to inspire the artists of today. Here are 5 cover versions of Italian favorites that prove it.

To view original versions, click the artist’s name.

“La prima cosa bella”

Original:  Nicola Di Bari/Ricchi e Poveri

Cover: Malika Ayane

In 2010, Malika Ayane revived this simple yet completely wonderful song that ranked at No. 2 in the 20th edition of Sanremo, presented by Di Bari alongside the group Ricchi e Poveri. Although the original is always a beloved favorite, Ayane used a delicate touch to make the song relevant again for a new generation. Her cover was even featured on the soundtrack for the film of the same name.

“Ma il cielo è sempre più blu”

Original: Rino Gaetano

Cover: Giusy Ferreri

2016 marks the 35th anniversary of singer-songwriter Rino Gaetano’s death. Out of all the many covers of this song, Giusy’s version is a top pick, her vocals matching Gaetano’s signature grit. Find it on her 2009 album Fotografie.

“Mediterraneo”

Original: Mango

Cover: Pietro Gabriele

Pietro Gabriele is a fantastic young singer-songwriter and musician who comes to us from the small Italian island of Pantelleria. He performed this passionate and moving cover of Mango’s “Mediterraneo” in profound homage to his island–with scenes of its beautiful landscape playing in the background–at his show this past May at the great Teatro Europa di Aprilia. Check out MNGBlog’s interview with Gabriele here and look out for his new single on August 10!

“Volare”

Original: Domenico Modugno

Cover: Il Volo

When many people think of Italy and it’s music, “Volare” is one of the first songs that come to mind. Oh, how we love Il Volo’s version of this definitive Italian song! Featured on their 2015 albums Grande Amore (International Version), L’amore si muove, and Grande Amore (Spanish Version), the award-winning trio remixes the original worldwide hit with a little Latin rhythm.

“‘O Sarracino”

Original: Renato Carosone

Cover: Gigi D’Alessio

As a Neapolitan classic, “‘O Sarracino” has been covered countless times since its release in 1958. For this remake, D’Alessio, a native of Naples himself, is joined by guitarist Michael Thompson, who lends a Santana-like flare to the track. Find it on D’Alessio’s album Malaterra, which features covers of other Neapolitan classics such as “Guaglione” (featuring Briga) and “‘O surdato ‘nnamurato.”

Gigi will play two more concerts in the U.S. this year as part of his Malaterra international tour. For more information, including tickets, visit gigidalessio.com.

Il Volo, These Wonderful Guys – Daniela

(As translated by Bing ~ Marie)

We often talk about how Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio are people with a heart of gold, we follow ’em know very well but many people do not believe their availability towards others.

I found this video that made the day on July 8 while they were in Mexico.

Their drummer told him that there was a girl named Simona who admire them so much and they sent this video from Mexico to Simona. In Italy it was night but the amazement of Simon and he was great. Simona is a girl with down syndrome.

We detail everything they say so anyone who does not understand the Italian spoken, you can translate.

G = Hello Simon, how are you? We are Gianluca and Piero, Ignatius is sleeping over there on the other side

P = Simonetta bella, (Ignatius) is intended for concert

G = Salvatore (Salvatore Corazza drummer) told us that you’re a great musician and you write some good pieces.

P = Listen Simona we hear great love, love moves

G = and maybe one day we will meet and we will sing together

P = absolutely, absolutely, a kiss

G = Ciao bella, we’re sending you a kiss, Hello beautiful.

Simona has posted on his facebook message with this dedication:

Unexpected surprises in the middle of the night, I still can’t believe it. A huge thrill to know that from Mexico flight thought of me! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you are the swinging.

***************************

What can we say? I’m really swinging, special people, if Simon hadn’t posted the message would remain private. This isn’t the first time they have surprises like this. Are golden boys.

More from Daniela:

I found these videos of the concert in Florence, perhaps some of you have not yet seen, are very well filmed.

And

Maybe not all of you have seen this picture.

The newspaper the NATION appeared the pics of Florence, among the various photos of the spectators there was also this, the journalist wrote public” (perhaps ninth knew who they were) but we who know them well we know we are Alessandra, elegant and mom and dad.

The attitude I would say there is a good relationship between Alessandra and Mrs Catherine.

I know many of you were able to meet them at various meet and greet and who have made a great impression.

Informed people here were told that Alexandra carried a ring with two diamonds. We know also that they left the same night after the concert, everyone in the car together, Alessandra, Ignatius and his parents, to avoid the fans stationed outside the hotel.

A lady present at the concert had the opportunity to chat with Ms Catherine telling him that was very beautiful Alessandra and Ms Catherine le replied “beautiful outside and beautiful inside that seems to me a nice compliment!!

I don’t think the news that you are separated to be true.

Maybe it was time to mislead because you should know that here there are fans very invasive even allow themselves to curse Alessandra.

This hurts a lot for Ignatius who in fact does not comment more on social but these fans posting malicious comments on Alessandra also profile for Gianluca.

Not even us fans that love them we can talk about them as we draw attention to this group that you definitely do not want the welfare of our children.

Gary Istok has warned us about this group of fanatics.

Do you think that even long ago a fan had put a new profile on facebook called the NEW FLIGHT where the components were only Gianluca and Piero.

Amazing how the human stupidity reaches certain levels.

Have you heard of this? What do you think?

“We’re Talking About Il Volo Here” – Kitty

Just watched all the, as yet available, videos of the concert last night.  As with everyone else, I cried, and I cried, right along with my feelings of pride and joy.
CmUoubjVIAADImzPiero was in his element, and with his idol standing right beside him.  What more could you ask for; but the stress of not blowing it had to be enormous.  Ignazio, Ignazio surprised us a little earlier in their North American tour by singing an Aria in duet with Piero.  As usual, he did himself proud then, and now he has further extended those abilities, to our delight, of course.  Had to smile watching him though, he was having a real fight with himself, when he wasn’t singing, trying to stand still in this particular musical environment.  Poor guy!  He, of course was wonderful in spite of the dictated expectations.  Proud of you Ignazio, now go and find something to jump off of, or mess up your beautiful hair and scream!  It’s okay, really!  And now Gianluca… I have to admit I wondered how he would handle this genre. Gianluca is somewhat  the chameleon of the three, in my opinion; but he never disappoints when a challenge arises. He has this sexy, suave, debonair persona about him, that lends itself easily to the romantic crooners of the past.  His voice can be enticing, to be sure, but he can also sing with great passion and fireOpera, however, may be the ultimate of those challenges.  In hearing him last night, he certainly met that challenge, and did it with his usual grace, and dedication.  He was absolutely wonderful!  Amazing!  This vocal transformation reminds me of Sinatra, in particular, because of a video I saw not long ago of Frank singing opera with Kathryn Grayson in a duet from Don Giovanni in the 1947 film “IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN”.  ( FRANK sings OPERA ) you tube.  Uncanny coincidence, to say the least!

It was a magnificent job from all three of our guys, but what would you expect?  Don’t forget we’re talking about Il Volo here, there is none better!

Ciao Kitty

Jana and Lorna’s Adventure Day 2 “Gas or no gas?”

Allora….Day 1.5 & 2

So far everything has been ship-shape and right on schedule!

We landed safely in Florence and hailed Uber!  Our nice driver, Alessio, who spoke English, got us safely to our hotel.  Or at least pretty close.  A lot of one-way streets in Florence and  they drive fast and crazy!  The entrance to our bed and breakfast was a bit hidden, so he drove past it a bit, so we just walked, as it was a one-way street and he really couldn’t turn around.

We had some difficulty actually finding the rooms, as nothing is marked.   There were 4 floors and we had no idea which one it was.  Nothing said Martindago.  I went to 4 and Lorna went to 2 and we could not find it.  Each floor just had these HUGE wooden double doors on either side of the floor.  I finally gave up and called them.  They were on 3!

Ok, we got to our room, filled out the paperwork, and then relaxed a bit.  We arrived just about noon, as expected!  We were a bit tired, so we took a nap.  We needed to meet our group for the tour at 6:10p.  I looked on my trusty Google Maps and saw it was just a 10 minute or so walk from the hotel.  Ok, we can do this, so we set off.  We went a little ways and decided it was the wrong direction, so we turned around.  Not sure if this is like this all over Italy, but street signs are on buildings!  So, you had to keep looking up without tripping over the cobblestone walks.  As Lorna said, it was a miracle we found it, after a few wrong turns and the sun in our eyes, we ended up in the right spot!

We soon found out Alessio was our driver and chef again.   No, different person. Lol!  Alessio took us into the rolling hills of Tuscany in the Chianti region.  We arrived and were instructed to wash our hands.  Then it was a quick history of chianti wine and that the wine we were going to drink tonight was organic.  Like champagne, you cannot call just any dry red wine, Chianti!

We were then led to the kitchen for our first lesson.  We actually made our own dough, added toppings, and then he threw it in the ovens.  Next came the demo of making chocolate gelato.  We also learned what to look for in buying a good gelato.  Kind of like a diamond, but only 4 criteria…1. are crowds local or tourists, 2. price – no more than $2.50 for 2 scoops, 3. be sure it is offered in small amounts, not mounded high in the case, 4. like a diamond, color – be sure your favorite flavor is a natural color, not overly orange, pink, or yellow.  After the gelato lesson, it was time for pictures.  We went outside and were able to take pictures of the beautiful landscape, while our pizzas were cooking.

It was then time to come in and eat our creations.  My toppings were sauce, cheese, black olives, red onions, proscuitto, and what he called salami.  And it had a kick!   Sprinkled with oregano.  I like my cheese on top, so that is where I put it.  Pizza was ok, but looked good.  I think I will continue to buy my dough!  However, the wine and gelato were awesome, and we bought a bottle of wine to bring back to the room.  We even got diplomas.  By nearly 10pm, it was time to go back, so we got a very quick and bumpy ride back to the drop off point.

Once again, my trusty Google Maps got us back to the hotel.

The next day – July 1!  The day of the first concert!  I know a lot of it is already circulating on the net…

I woke  up at 4am and could not go back to sleep, so I gave up and got up at 6am.  Got in our tiny bathroom shower and was careful not to brak my neck.  Next, I rolled Lorna out of bed.  We made it for breakfast about 8:30am or so.  It took us a few tries, but figured out breakfast was about a half block away on the corner.  We had 2 cappuccinos and a croissant and shared it with the birds.

We were waiting for a call from Veronica, who was bringing our Verona tickets.  We ended up meeting her and her 1 friend at the steps of the Santa Croce at 11:30a.  We decided to find a restaurant and had lunch.  After almost a few hours, we made it back to our hotel and agreed to meet again at 4:45pm, as Lorna and the girls were gettingb their hair done. Prior to that we almost passed the hotel where the guys were staying.  Fans were camped out waiting for them to appear.  No sign of them, so back to our rooms we went.  The girls got their hair done, while I got our tickets to the concert.  I was hungry and it was a bit after 6p, so we ate dinner at this restaurant by our hotel.  It was very good and had a very nice waiter who spoke English.  They ask you what kind og water you want – sparling or regular, gas or no gas!  Ok, what were you really thinking?  Lol!  It was nearly 7:30p by the time we got out of there, so we quickly went back to our rooms to get ready.

Just getting to the Santa Croce was an adventure.  We were just a 10 minute walk away, but it took us almost half an hour, as they routed us clear around the entire plaza to the other side.  We got to our seats about 9:10p and the concert was supposed to start at 9:15p.  Alas, I suggested Lorna change purses and she forgot her phone!  Ok, up to me to take pictures and video.

Oh, on our slight detour around the plaza, we accidentally ran into the guys leaving the hotel and getting in their van.  Amongst the crowd, we were able to see Igna’s and Piero’s heads.  I screamed to Lorna, “it’s the guys, it’s the guys!”  They quickly vanished into the van and the doors were shut.  We turned the other way and made it back to the venue to find our seats.

Mi dispiace, but it is 2:30am, i am exhausted and need to get up in 4 hours for our all day tour tomorrow. So, i must sign off for now.  Part 2 tomorrow! Sorry, some pictures tomorrow…
