THE RULES OF THE SANREMO FESTIVAL by Daniela

Today I bring you to the attention of the rules that must be observed for the Sanremo Festival and also how the evenings will take place.

January 15 = The press publishes its reviews of the thirty Sanremo songs. (already happened)
January 31 = The lyrics of the competing songs are published. (already happened)
February 5 = Green carpet and opening ceremony.
February 6-10 = Sanremo 2024.

FIRST EVENING – 6 FEBRUARY

All 30 competing artists perform, including those promoted from Sanremo Giovani. (26+3).
The songs will be voted only by the Press Room Tv Web.
A ranking will be drawn up, but only  the top 10 classified will be communicated.

SECOND EVENING – 7  FEBRUARY

Performance of 15 songs in the competition by their respective 15 Artists competing.
The songs/Artists will be voted by the public through Televoting and by the Radio Jury.
The two voting systems in the evening will have a percentage weight on the result total vote divided as follows: Televoting 50%; Radio Jury 50%.
Following the overall result of the voting, a ranking of the 15 will be drawn up songs/artists performed in the evening.
Only the songs/artists in the top five positions will be communicated to the public.
In this evening the 15 singers who are not performing will present the 15 singers competing.

THIRD EVENING – 8 FEBRUARY

Everything takes place exactly like the second evening, the other 15 competing singers perform.

FOURTH EVENING – 9 FEBRUARY – COVER EVENING

Execution, by each of the 30 competing artists, of a cover (an already famous song), chosen from the songs that are part of the Italian and international repertoire and published by 31 December 2023.
The Artists – who will therefore also be able to sing in a foreign language on this occasion , they will have to perform together with  other artists (including among these also “groups” who are their guests proclaimed fame Italians or foreigners),  will be voted by the public with Televoting, by the Press Room TV and Web Jury and by the Radio Jury.
The three voting systems will have a percentage weight on the overall result of the vote in the evening as follows:
Televoting 34%: Jury from the Press Room TV and Web 33%, Radio Jury 33%, and will give rise to an Evening ranking of the 30 Artists.
Only Artists in the top 10 positions in the aforementioned ranking of the evening, will be communicated to the public.
The first-place artist may be declared the winner of the evening.
The average between the overall percentages of votes obtained by the Artists in the Evening and those obtained from the songs/Artists in the previous evenings will determine a new general ranking of the 30 songs/Artists competing.
This ranking will be announced on the final evening.

FIFTH EVENING – 10 FEBRUARY – FINAL

Performance of the 30 competing songs by the respective 30 artists.
The songs/Artists will be voted by the public through Televoting.
The general ranking of the 30 songs/Artists obtained at the Fourth Evening will be communicated to the public.
A new ranking will be determined by adding the average between the percentages of votes obtained in the evening (through televoting) and those obtained in all the previous evenings. This ranking will be communicated entirely to the public.
Reproduction, through live performance or through audio video recording, of the five songs (or part of them) of the competing artists with the highest position.
Previous votes will be reset and a new vote will be taken  by the public by Televoting, by the Press Room TV and Web Jury, and by the Radio Jury.
The three voting systems will have a percentage weight on the overall result of this last vote in the evening distributed as follows: Televoting 34%: Press Room TV and Web Jury 33%; Radio Jury 33%.
The song/Artist with the highest overall percentage of votes obtained in this last vote will be proclaimed WINNER of SANREMO 2024.

TELEVOTING

To express your preference via televoting from home, simply send an SMS to the number 475.475.1. indicating the number assigned to the song-artist of each evening, the maximum number of valid votes is five for each delivery channel, therefore five SMS from mobile users and five calls from fixed users.
Televoting by telephone call can only be carried out from landlines located in Italy, it cannot be carried out from public telephones, mobile phones, or from landlines located abroad.
Televoting via SMS can only be carried out by mobile users of the telephone operators TIM, Vodafone, Wind Tre, Poste Mobile, Coop Italia, iliad, Kena and ho.mobile.
The Sanremo Festival, as well as on RAI1, can be followed in live streaming on RaiPlay for free, visible on Computer Tablets and Smartphones.
I hope I have clarified things a little for you with this post. If you have any questions, please ask in the comments.
As you may have read, you cannot vote from abroad, but then the rule says that those who have certain telephone cards listed above can vote via mobile phone. So, I think to understand, anyone who is abroad and has these cards can vote.
As for following the live broadcast, I would say that it is possible for you, given that the broadcasts start at 8.30pm Italian time, so for you it is afternoon.
That’s all, I’m waiting for your questions.
Daniela 🤗

  1. Daniela
Wow just reading this makes me nervous!!!! Praying for Il Volo they are the best of the best as far as I am concerned but wowwwwwwwww this is intense!!!!! thank you for your continued love and care and sharing with us all!!!
    Cindi

  2. Good grief, so much voting. I am not optimistic about the press vote considering how the treated Il Volo in the past. nor the radio jury. I wish the best of luck to our young men. Even though we have not heard the song yet I am 100% they deserve the prize. No one is better than Il Volo.!!!! Come on Italian televoters, do the right thing like you did in 2015.

    1. I’m not optimistic about the RosaMarie votes either, according to the forecasts Il Volo is not even considered for a victory.
The boys aren’t optimistic either, in fact they booked the Arena on Eurovision night, you know there’s the Press Room vote and also the radio vote which certainly doesn’t play in their favour.

  3. Crumbs, I think I am more confuzzled than I was half an hour ago. I will wait and see the result. Even if it doesn’t go the way we want it to, I know Il Volo will have given of their best. In a few years, if it isn’t Il Volo, the winners will have been forgotten, whereas Il Volo will be remembered for decades to come.

I remember way back in 1968 Cliff Richard coming second with the Bill Martin/Phil Coulter song Congratulations. But who remembers who won that night with the unforgettable lyrics of La La La? Phil has always referred to Congratulations as one of his ‘pension’ songs, along with Puppet On A String which won the year before.

    1. I agree with you Roz, time will tell if it was a success.
But I don’t argue about the skill of Il Volo and I must say seeing people who are rewarded and brought into vogue with so many compliments, when in fact they have no merit, is truly disheartening.

  4. I’m going out on a ledge saying this is absolutely
Unbelievable,! It is worse than political processes, and we know how they work! Anyway, if there is a God, he/she will ensure all is well and who should win , will win❤️ il Volo will make all of their fans proud and be proud of themselves! Gianluca, Ignatieff and Piero will rock this world in the name of PEACE and GOODWILL. WITH LOVE❤️🇨🇦❤️

    1. Reading your comments, Sheila, it makes me laugh because this regulation is really very complicated but you should know that we Italians are a little like that, complicated and bureaucratic. In 2019 there was also the quality jury, they were 8 very different people, but unfortunately with the same musical taste who did not appreciate the melodies of Il Volo, in fact they voted it in last place. Despite this, and the bad ratings from the Press Room, they finished in third place.

  5. I’m with all of you. I’m confused and awestruck at the complexity of it all. I spaced out halfway through and had to start over to digest how it all works. We all want our heroes to win and are praying for that result. Bless all of you.

    1. Victoria, when you reread it, were you able to understand the difficult Sanremo rules?
We would all like Il Volo to win, but I see it as very tough for them.

  6. I’m hoping that RAI International will show broadcast on American time. I cannot stream RaiIPlay in Florida

    1. Carol, Daniela stated in this post that “The Sanremo Festival, as well as on RAI1, can be followed in live streaming on RaiPlay for free, visible on Computer Tablets and Smartphones.” (and also desktop computers) Also she says, “…..broadcasts start at 8.30pm Italian time,” which would be 1:30 p.m. Central time. (Adjust your viewing to your time zone.) Type http://www.raiplay.it in the address bar on your browser. Anyone can watch and it. Hope this helps. 😊

    2. Carol, RAIPLAY is in your App Store, I’m in Florida also and I was on it tonight. The app is free and so is the play. Try again, you should be able to get on. Good luck!😉 Carol O.

      1. Thanks for mentioning the app, Carol. I just downloaded it to my iPhone so I can watch while not at home. 😊

      2. I now have Raiplay on my iPad, need to figure out if I can get it in English! I call it a work in progress! Nice to see the boys (men) of Il Volo! Thanks to everyone who keeps giving us non technical fans learning!!❤️🇨🇦

      3. I went on the website on my computer and there was something to click to get English. I clicked it and after a few seconds it changed from Italian to English–it was not an immediate change. I downloaded the app on my phone also, I hope the app also has some way to get English.

  7. Thank you Daniela. I was doing good understanding til I got to night five. Am I correct that there are three different votes that night. Il Volo needs finish in the top five before the final vote. That should be easy but I worry that the audience is only one third of that vote. I’m just hoping and praying they are given a fair chance. We all know they will be the best and deserve to win!

    1. Cathy, on the last evening there is televoting from home which determines a ranking, to which all the votes from the previous evenings are then added. The new ranking determines the first 5 places, at this point everything is reset and the three votes (home + press + radio) and the winner is determined

    1. Martha, Daniela stated in this post that “The Sanremo Festival, as well as on RAI1, can be followed in live streaming on RaiPlay for free, visible on Computer Tablets and Smartphones.” (and also desktop computers) Also she says, “…..broadcasts start at 8.30pm Italian time,” which would be 1:30 p.m. Central time. (Adjust your viewing to your time zone.) Type http://www.raiplay.it in the address bar on your browser. Anyone can watch and it. Hope this helps. 😊

      1. 9 hour time difference from the west coast in Canada
SANREMO is ahead of us on the west coast of Canada
8:30 pm in SANREMO is 11:30 am on the west coast of Canada

      2. Which makes it 2:30 EST for Ottawa and Toronto and environs.
It gets nutty as we go east with that half hour in Newfoundland!

  8. Dear God. I’m confused and never thought how intense this was. Am I worried? Yes I am, but I know The Flight will do us proud. No matter what the result is, they will always be number “1” in my book.

    1. Ann, I didn’t think I’d surprise you so much by explaining the Sanremo votes, but you’re right, they are really complicated.

  9. Thanks Daniela this was amazing and confusing all at the same time! I did get on RAIPLAY tonight and watched an interview on Bsmet with Gianluca Grozzio (?) all in Italian but I caught a word here and there! I will watch whatever I can at least to see our ragazzi do their songs🤞🏻. Thank you thank you and pray for our guys to get what they deserve 1st place because they are the BEST!
You’re also the best, you do so much to help all of us who are “helpless”😵‍💫! Prayers, Carol💖💖💖🎶🎼🎤🙏🏻☮️🩷

  10. Carol, I laugh when I read “amazing and confusing”, but that’s exactly how it is.
The BSMT interview is one of the best ever done, it will be in the next post, but you have to activate the subtitles, listen to it several times reading the translation there are many things to discover.

  11. Will there be a video available for all of Il Volo’s performances, as well as the announcement of the winner? I have a laptop, but not a tablet, so watching the live streaming will not be possible.

  12. Thank you for sharing this information. I actually understood the process. I am just disappointed that people in the US can’t vote. But I will be sending positive thoughts and prayers to the “boys” all week long.

  13. The rules of San Remo are so strict that it’s a wonder they let some of the dough-heads from the press even vote!!! Like parents and/or grandparents, we will hope and pray for our Il Volo to win, but if they don’t, we will probably blame the way of voting on their loss. After this is over, whatever the outcome, we will still be staunch supporters of Our Three!

In the past few years, however I don’t know, I’ve been able to watch the San Remo Festival on TV, with dear Amadeus as host. Also saw the Festival the year Marco Mengoni won. Lets hope I get to see it this time! Hugs, Dol.

      1. My second husband was from Scotland and that was one of his favorite expressions. Feel free to use it whenever you want!. Love, Dolores

  14. Daniela & Pat – what angels you are!! – I would like to – if it is appropriate – offer a blessing to our boys – “May a higher power extend a loving hand & place a blessing on each of the heads of Piero – Ignazio & Gianluca for not only Sanremo – but for the profound love they bring to their loyal fans & for taking us all to a higher place with their stunning voices” – thank you Daniela & Pat – much love.

  15. OMG – complicated and frustrating – but I think I got it. Thank you so much Daniela and Pat for explaining the system so detailed to us. As we say here “cut out in carbon and bent in neon” if that makes sense in English. Anyhow, this voting system does most certainly not in the favor of our guys so guess we should all try to lower our expectations and be prepared for the worst. Yet we will root for them and send them all our love and support the best we can to keep up their spirit through this trying week. As previously stated, I have lost all respect for this festival so…. No matter the result the guys will always be my heroes and fave singers whom I’ll cherish for ever. I’m a technical “dumb” but I’ll see if I can figure out how to stream the show if available here in Denmark. Last time I tried to watch RAI 1 online on my computer a box popped up saying that it was not accessible to countries outside Italy. We’ll see. Otherwise I’ll rely on YouTube for listening to our boy’s performances.
Love to you all – Kirsten 🇩🇰

    1. Kirsten, I knew I would surprise you, unfortunately the Festival’s voting system is very complex and not at all favorable to IL Volo. I believe that their aim was to exploit the media visibility of the event and in fact there were many interviews, articles in newspapers, TV news and Sanremo still hasn’t started. It is also nicknamed the Festival of controversies, because every time it generates some. Of course, it would have been nice to see them at the Eurovision Festival too, but never mind!!
However, I believe that the Sanremo Festival is accessible outside Italy.

      1. Penina, they have just announced that tonight they should sing in the middle of the evening, they are the sixteenth to perform of thirty singers.

      2. Can you give a rough estimate how much time from now it may be? I can’t get the schedule in English from the telecasts! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and the tip of my toe ❤️

      3. I can’t figure out how to watch. I opened up RaPlay but all I get is some conference of people sitting at a table talking. No performances, even though it says SanRemo 2024. Since I don’t understand I don’t know if this is preliminary and the performances come later or if I have the wrong thing!

      4. That’s what I get too! Thought I could translate to English but can’t!

      5. OMG I just watched it in ItiItalian and it was CAPOVOLARIA MAGNIFICENT MAGNIFICENCE MAGNIFICENT 🔥🔥🔥❤️

      6. That brings me to the same homepage I get when using the app. Once there, I do not know how to get the program.
Am I supposed to sign in or something?

      7. Penina, did you use the link that I posted? If you go there right when the show starts it should show it. You might have to click a play button on the video. You should not have to sign in and I just tried the link and only the RAI logo appears until the show starts.

      8. There is no video. There is a home page that says Rai with a bunch of boxes. Across the top are the names of various shows, with San Remo 2024 the first choice. WQhen you click on that, you get a page with that says San Remo 2024–but no video, and no button. Up on the right corner is a box that says accedi (I think) . That’s it. I can’t figure out how to get the video. Sheila Kirkpatrick had the exact same page as I did.

      9. Penina, I just clicked the link and I see the video saying they will start soon.

  16. Thank you Daniela and Pat for all the information on the voting for Sanremo. It is confusing and obviously we all wish the very best for Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca. I remember how exciting it was when they first sang Grande Amore in 2015! For us they are always winners.

    1. Certainly Margaret, for us they have already won, they deserve full success this time too, at least for the commitment, kindness, skill and professionalism they always demonstrate, for the rest, we are waiting to hear CAPOLAVORO.

  17. Thanks for the rules , can’t say I understand them , seems a little bit complicated but thanks for trying to explain. Love this page . X

    1. Rosina, sometimes it is more complicated to write and read certain rules, then you will see that by following them everything seems easier. Thanks for the compliments.
