On November 17, the newspaper La Repubblica published this beautiful interview done by Irene Carmina with Piero Barone.
Piero is really sweet as he answers questions and lets us see his beautiful and lovable personality once again.
Immediately after the publication of this interview, the Tour dates covering North America were announced and for this reason I preferred to wait a few days to translate it. But now here it is, enjoy reading!!
To those who consider him a “child prodigy” of Italian music, the singer Piero Barone from Agrigento smiles and explains that success matters little in life. That the important things are different.
He has had success since he was very young. At 15 he took part in the children’s talent show “Ti lascio una canzone” and was one of the three tenors of “Il Volo”, together with Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble. At 31 he has already done everything an artist dreams of doing at the end of his career.
He sang with Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Bono and Placido Domingo, toured with Barbra Streisand, won Sanremo. He has climbed the national and international charts, taking bel canto around the world.
“Now I dream of opera,” he says from Madrid, before the last stop on a European tour.
* Are you thinking about a solo career instead?
This has also been said about me, but it’s not true. Alone you go fast, together you go far.
* But isn’t there the risk of losing something along the way if you go far away? In his case, perhaps, an entire phase of his life: adolescence.
I also quickly started to take on responsibilities. And do you know what the paradox is?
* What?
That having started our careers so young, many imagine us as eternally children. It wasn’t easy to shake off this look. It was a difficult period in my life: the key to overcoming it was to keep up with the times and evolve but always maintaining one’s identity, with seriousness and professionalism.
* In short, head down and work.
I can’t afford any missteps, I’m not one for pranks. I’m practically incorruptible.
* But everyone is allowed, when young, some blunder .
Not me, if I do something stupid I block the work of all the people who work with me. As a lover of psychology, I think that life is about balance.
*Speaks as if he were twice his age.
Friends always tell me I look old, but it suits me. Let me do what I like to do.
* What do you like to do?
Waking up at dawn, running in the evening at sunset, going fishing, listening to nostalgic pieces of “Buena vista social club”, reading the newspapers in the morning on the iPad sitting alone at the table. Ignazio and Gianluca know not to disturb me at that moment. It’s one of the little things that helps us stay together after so many years, let alone three. We are three different minds but together we form a team in all respects.
Our greatest fortune has been the maturity in understanding and respecting our individual needs and the private lives of each of us. We grew up together, sharing unique experiences that, just by telling them about them, my fellow villagers thought I was crazy
* Tell us one.
For example when at an evening organized for us in the States we found ourselves together with the Black Eyed Peas, Leonardo Di Caprio and Quincy Jones. Or when Barbra Streisand recommended her hairdresser in Los Angeles because she didn’t like my hair. She noticed us on “American Idol” and the “Tonight Show” and wanted us on tour with her.
* Of course, a great shot.
I didn’t even know who she was, I only realized it later. However, I knew Placido Domingo. He found out who we were from his six-year-old nephew walking around the house in New York singing “Grande Amore” with red glasses, saying he was Piero Barone. Sanremo has also allowed us to approach young audiences.
* Also because it is undeniable that fans of songs like “O sole mio” are not that young.
It’s clear that you don’t have to be a hundred years behind, but you can’t expect to please everyone. Otherwise you risk becoming a victim of the system. Growing up among criticism made me understand that the difference lies in how you interpret it. If you take them as an accusation you’re finished, if you see them as advice they become a stimulus. And, looking at what we did, it went very well.
* Among the things you have done there is also the Christmas concert recorded this summer at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
Controversy matters little, Agrigento, the capital of culture, will shine in all its beauty everywhere in the world. Singing under the Temple of Concordia is a dream come true. And if I have to be honest, my luck was being born in Sicily.
* Why?
I inherited everything I am from the island. I wasn’t born in a five star hotel and I see the beauty of life in little things. I grew up in Naro, a small town where time passes slowly, with a housewife mother and a body shop father. He closed his business to follow me to the United States, we at Il Volo are the first Italian artists to have signed a contract with an American major, Geffen, owned by Universal. But nowhere was it written that it would go well, there was the risk of finding oneself empty-handed.
* Now I understand where your sense of responsibility comes from: all the expectations placed on her, it couldn’t have been easy.
I also felt guilty towards my brother and sister. They have always been close to me, without ever making me burden myself with anything. And I try to return the good that was given to me.
* Who discovered your voice?
My grandfather who had a more beautiful voice than mine and sang in a folk music group in the village. I was six years old and I started humming on the swing in countryside, a popular song “Lu sole calia, talia, talia”, while he recorded a cassette. Hearing me sing, he stopped:
“Piero, come for a moment.”
It all started like this.
* And then?
On Saturday afternoons my father drove two hours there and back to take me to the children’s choir in Agrigento and then to the singing teacher in Vittoria.
If you imagine how a little boy would react if his father wanted to take him to the church choir? He would throw pots at his head. I, on the other hand, was happy: those two hours of travel with dad remain among my best memories.
On Sundays, however, there were festivals. Once, at the end of summer, I said to my father: “Enough, dad, I’m tired.”
“We’ll do the last one in September”, he replied because he believed in me.
It was in Cosenza, madness.
We left in a blue Citroen Xantia, but I was discarded; it was a pop competition and I had little to do with it.
A talent scout, however, noticed me: he wanted me for “I’ll leave you a song”.
That day changed my life.
The beautiful interview ends like this but in the rectangle on the left at the bottom of the page there is a comment that is not part of the interview itself and therefore I will translate it for you:
“I haven’t lived with a partner, but when I find one I will already be trained.
I imagine it would be difficult for two people, let alone three.”
Piero certainly means to say that he has never lived with a woman. Then he considers that living together as a couple is certainly difficult, which is why he lets it be understood that Ignazio and Gianluca have a sort of coexistence as a threesome, which is even more difficult, and it is for this reason that Piero feels he is already trained in view of a probable living together as a couple. 😉
Another very good news is that the new CD AD ASTRA INTERNATIONAL with the addition of the new tracks will also be sold in Italy from November 29th, I must have it immediately!!!

In recent days I have also found a new review of a song by Ignazio Boschetto by a female vocal coach. She doesn’t know Ignazio and very little about Il Volo, I think she’s a Greek vocal coach, she’s quite skeptical at first, but in the end she’s astonished. Turn on subtitles.
Last thing, many Italian television programs have been announced on Canale 5 where Il Volo will also be there and it will truly be a great presence of our beloved singers.
For now they are confirmed as guests on Wednesday 27 November on the THIS IS ME program hosted by Silvia Toffanin.
Then on 7-14-21 the repeats of this year’s Verona concerts will be broadcast and on the 24th there will be the Christmas concert recorded at the Valley of the Temples.
The dates of the ZELIG and LE IENE programs have yet to be announced, where Il Volo will certainly also be a guest, however we will keep you informed.

JC Reaccion is great. I like watching him as he listens to Il volo. I have even commented that he should listen to the music of the night and he loved it I also told him to listen to Piero singing arias, but I love love story and all of the songs from ad Astra and capolavoro. I also .learned the name of the thing Ignazio does that sounds like it’s hurting his voice is called distortion. She didn’t have a problem with it so I guess it’s OK. I’m sure they are getting good advice on taking care of their beautiful voices.

In my opinion (slightly prejudiced!) he is the most versatile of the three of them. He has song bel canto, jazz, rock, opera, Broadway tunes, Elvis—you name it! And he has excelled at all of it. I love when he teams up with Piero to sing opera—I know he’d rather not, but I wish he’d do it more often. So many of his solos were taken over by the group that we have almost forgotten he is the one who sang Caruso by himself, even Halleluya I think he sang initially br himself.
I bet that song coach was so suitably impressed that she looks him up and becomes a fan!

Penina, I am also an admirer of Ignazio and I think you are right, he is certainly the one who can represent three styles: pop, rock, classic. It’s always him who tries to give a more rock feel to the songs. Halleluiah was sung for the first time by him and Gianluca but the idea of presenting it was Ignazio’s. I believe that Ignazio with the contribution of a profound crooner like Gianluca and a romantic tenor like Piero form a truly exceptional trio…..Il Volo!! 🥰

I also didn’t really appreciate that the vocal coach talked so much covering the song, everyone has their own way but I much prefer how the vocal coach Giacomo Rossi does who stops the song and explains everything about the performance, but it was too nice to show you the enthusiastic face of the Greek vocal coach at the end of the performance!!

Dear Daniela, thank you for translating Piero’s interview! (I haven’t come across it on FB yet). It’s nice to know that Piero is still as nice and honest as ever, even though it’s just him. He revealed bits of personal information in a way that was interesting to us, yet he managed to maintain a considerable amount of privacy. And I was very amused by his reminder that thanks to living with Gianluca and Ignazio, he is perfectly prepared for a life together with his future girlfriend.
I was pleased to hear that Piero likes to listen to Spanish music “Buena vista social club”. I remembered some of the mixed reactions from fans after the release of the “Noche Sin Día” video and the “Ámamé” CD. The fact is that the guys don’t talk about it much anymore, which is a great shame. I personally was excited about both and I think the guys had a lot of fun too and have nothing to be ashamed of.
I would like to look at the assessment of Ignazio by a vocal coach, but unfortunately it was not possible to set Czech subtitles there. But I got a picture from previous posts. In any case, I also think that Ignazio is the most versatile singer of the three guys. All three are undoubtedly amazing and great, vocally and technically. But Ignazio really has the ability to sing anything from rock to opera and in a range of 3 octaves (and if we count falsetto, then 4).
I have already heard the English version of Capolavoro, but I have one small problem with it. It is of course nice, but … when listening to it, Italian words constantly pop into my head, my subconscious expects the continuation of the song in Italian, but I actually hear English. For other songs, I don’t mind the other language version, I even like it, but Capolavoro is simply fixed in Italian (and I think I would have a similar feeling if they sang Volare in English). So it will probably take me a while to get used to it.

Thank you Daniela and Pat for this excellent article – not the least the fine translation of the interview with Piero. I had seen and read an auto-translation a few weeks ago and actually not been able to understand the correct meaning of some of the replies. Hence, it is such a delight to read this fine one that gives so much more meaning. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this good job! And, well, what can one say – it is always a pleasure to hear/read the fine answers our guys give in interviews – being honest, humble and willing to share so much of their private thoughts and lives with us. This interview too. Piero is such a fine man and very grounded. Just love him. And he gave the reply to a question that I have always wondered about – namely, what impact his success must have had on his siblings – and I am so happy to learn, that they have coped well apparently but also that he is fully aware that it must have been difficult for them at times and now tries his best to compensate. What a wonderful man!
The most interested part of this article I did, however, find the reaction of the greek? vocal coach commenting on Ignazio’s version of the Queen song. It is a very good example of how little people – even within the music world – really know about IL VOLO. The wrong conception that they are a classic trio all classically trained in similarity with i.e. IL DIVO. Nothing could be more wrong – but it will take yet some time for them to wipe out that first hand impression. I am met with the same misunderstanding by almost everyone I know in my own country (Denmark) and, therefore, difficult even to get them to listen to them. It was interesting to hear the comments of this vocal coach though – especially based on her lacking knowledge of them and Ignazio in particular. Therefore, she seemed a bit puzzled and reluctant to use big words in the beginning, as realizing that it was an IL VOLO member, her expectations were low as to him being able to sing rock. And she gets a few things wrong – i.e. that he should be using an auto-tuner to make his voice glide perfectly up a phrase – nothing could be more wrong, none of the guys do. But being so very difficult to do correctly she does just simply assume that this is what makes his performance so perfect – little knowing how fantastic a voice and control of same Ignazio has. She finds him “miming” a few times too, I don’t think that is correct either – I am pretty sure he sings along those phrases too – why shouldn’t he? He is most certainly capable of doig it – so, unless, they have made a special arrangement of the song, he will naturally be singing it all himself and not “fake it”. She presumes that Ignazio is classically trained – in the sense of having studied opera and classical techniques. It is neither fully correct as albeit having taken singing lessons – and in connection with same likewise been working with some lyric music to a certain extend – it cannot in any way be compared with a genuine classical operatic training. I believe that Ignazio is just a “natural” having picked up many of the methods of singing on his own. OK, I don’t know what the guys have been taking of training the last 10 years – apart from Piero – but it must have been limited with so little time available for same. It no doubt just comes natural to Ignazio. Hence, likewise his ability to sing in a rough “rock-style”. He might not even be familiar with the technical term “distortion” – as I recall him having song in this manner from childhood – it is simply “Ignazio-style” to me. (For those less familiar with singing “distortion” is a label for a special singing technique that can be acquired by learning and training – and it has nothing to do with “ruining” the tunes or anything negative, if you should think so. It just makes you sound rough and edgy. We do never hear Gianluca nor Piero using this technique though, hence they do always present a more “nice” and “lyrical” timbre). Anyhow, I find the comments of the vocal coach interesting and I loved how she “bowed her head in the dust” in appreciation of Ignazio’s presentation at the end. Now she does just have to do the two others too. And she will be converted into a big fan of them all, I trust .
Great to hear an English version of “Capolavoro”. It will probably come in handy for them when commencing their USA/Canada Tour. Actually, I would have appreciated them having made one already right after their presentation at the San Remo Festival, as I believe it might have pushed the sale of the tune in Europe somewhat more. Having said so, I must likewise admit, that I have come to love the original version and to-day I prefer the one in the Italian language, as somehow it has a different sound. The English version isn’t as soft and appealing to me, so I guess I’ll just stick with my Italian one.

Yes Kirsten, in the interview Piero once again gave the opportunity to reveal his beautiful personal side and as always we were happy, because once again he demonstrated what a sincere, humble and grateful mature man he is. I’m happy that the translation was better than what you read.
The review of the vocal coach is truly unique, but in the next post I will put another one and you are absolutely right, even in the musical field Il Volo is not known for its actual talents, I bet that many don’t even listen to them, thinking of a repertoire old and classic, however Il Volo is much more and I am happy that these vocal coaches are sincere in recognizing the power and beauty of the voices of our young men.
Daniela as I read all the comments they paint a very clear picture – IlVolo needs an experienced Marketing Manager with international contacts! Of course, the guys have to want this kind of exposure!
Given the age of some of us (likely 65 plus and I am trying to be kind) we need to help recruit many more wonderful fans to share their love of our boys!
These guys are so talented, knowledgeable, humble, creative, empathetic, loving and caring individuals and the world is theirs for the taking! I wish I had found them years ago however I certainly respect the road they have taken to reach where they are today, however their future is wide open should that is what they want!
I certainly feel I know Piero so much better now and am happy understanding how his upbringing made him the man he has become!

I love watching the reactions, especially JC’s, love to watch his facial expression and he just loves them so much, a real fan. Get a kick out of other ones that have never heard them before and their reactions which are mostly amazement. I have my tickets for the concert in Florida just a couple of rows from Pat and we are going to try to meet. Can’t wait. Loved Piero’s write up, such an outstanding individual. They all are very intelligent and well spoken, love these guys to pieces.
