Sometime’s Sugar; Sometime’s Salt ~ Journey’s: Theirs and Mine ~ Kitty

a - Giovanna Rochi -Taormina 3

We all are definitely aware of just how very busy Il Volo has been since winning Sanremo. The doors have been thrown open, and so many more opportunities have opened up for them, that it’s a bit mind boggling, even for us. I can’t imagine what it must be like for them! On one hand, I’m so very proud and happy for them; but on the other, empathy. They have to be so mentally, and physically exhausted. Of course though, it’s a wonderful thing; they’ve worked so hard, and given so much, and no one deserves it more. Even though they’ve been away from us for a while, and it may be a while longer, it warms my heart when I hear them openly acknowledge the unwavering support that has been given to them by those where they were first received: USA, Canada, South & Latin America, and Mexico. They will always be grateful, and have never hesitated to express it publicly. They certainly are on their way to fulfilling that dream they have worked towards for so long, and now it has gained enough substance to actually be felt as a possible reality. For us, their dream is really what we have known to be their destiny. We have felt it from the moment they took the stage in Detroit, and we have never felt otherwise. Where they were placed and with whom, the natural skills and talents they were given; their character, values, sensitivities, and most of all their compassionate hearts, were knit together for a specific need, at a specific time. Each are very different from the other, and yet, each are the same: something I find to be quite remarkable. I ran across this, and wanted to share: not only with Il Volo, but with everyone:

Only as high as I reach can I grow,
Only as far as I seek can I go,
Only as deep as I look can I see,
Only as much as I dream can I be.
Karen Ravn

In our striving for our life to be successful and productive, we find that riches, or even popularity, really have very little to do towards achieving our goal. Instead, what plays to greater success, is in continuing to stay real. Within humility comes the ability of honestly sharing yourself with others, and perhaps even touch their hearts. There is so much good to be done, and so much joy yet to be created; and each of us have the ability to make a difference, in our own way. Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio are each very aware of the need in this world; hence, the tireless effort they put forth in using the gifts they’ve been given. They have a rewarding future ahead of them: the excitement of discovering new ways to reach out, the amazement of unexpected opportunities, the wonder of visiting new places, and the gratification of seeing the smiles on the faces of those lifted by the beauty of the music. Behind them, families await, friends anticipate, and wonderful rest beckons, even if for just a moment.

YES, WE MISS THEM!! Even though we follow them, we save photos, we read comments, and look forward to tweets from them, we still miss them! I understand, I surely do! But, OH MY GOSH, thank goodness they continue to keep in touch with us, rather than choose just to ignore! Those cameras, always in their face, has to get aggravating sometimes. But we are so thankful for it. What would we do without the Internet? (never thought I’d be saying that!) In the meantime, to ease the angst of their summer tour being both long, and out of reach; and the ansy feeling of Eurovision looming, I found a way, a distraction if you will, to ease both, temporarily. I decided to take a trip. A virtual one, but none the less effective, for the moment. I began by filling my mind full of photos of the guys from each of their galleries, and while firmly embedding them in my head, I tucked the guys securely into my heart once again, and off we went towards home, their home. Oh yeah, there was a momentary delay, Gianluca had to finish fixing his hair! lol. We love you Gianluca! We went to Sicily first, and Piero and Ignazio made sure to show me wonderful sites, and lots of interesting things that are part of who they are: towns and countryside, mountains and beaches, food and vineyards. We took in beautiful art, architecture, and historical ruins. We talked about traditions and customs, and their way of life. They were wonderful guides, and I learned many things. Next, it was Gianluca’s turn. We spent most of our time in Montepagano; his quaint hilltop sanctuary he calls home. We looked down at beautiful beach views, and beyond. I was able to experience the vivid reds and bright golds of the suns goodbye, shining across the massive expanse of calm sparkling water, and in the morning, the pale hues of pink and yellow at it’s dawning. All around were rolling hills of green, and the brilliance of brightly colored flowers dotted the landscape, while trees shimmered, as their leaves danced in the cool breeze. The atmosphere was easy and inviting, and the people cordial, and unmistakably content. I couldn’t help feeling that this place where Gianluca returns to his family, offers to him that same calm, and thus the rest and rejuvenation needed. I had such a wonderful time with the guys, and I returned to my own surroundings refreshed, and even more grateful for knowing such extraordinarily caring young guys. What a blessing they have been to all of us, and will be, to much more of the world as they travel.

MORE, JUST FOR FUN (I THINK)

Just a line to say I’m living, that I’m not among the dead,
Though I’m getting more forgetful, and mixed up in the head.

I got used to my arthritis, to my dentures I’m resigned,
I can manage my bifocals, but God, I miss my mind.

For sometimes I can’t remember when I stand at the foot of the stairs,
If I must go up for something, or have I just come down from there.

And before the fridge so often, my poor mind is filled with doubt,
Have I just put food away, or have I come to take some out.

And there’s times when it is dark, with my nightcap on my head,
I don’t know if I’m retiring, or just getting out of bed.

So, if it’s my turn to write you, there’s no need for getting sore,
I may think that I have written, and don’t want to be a bore.

So remember that I love you, and wish that you were near.
Now it’s nearly mail time, so must say goodbye my dear.

Here I stand beside the mail box, with a face so very red,
Instead of mailing you my letter, I have opened it instead!

MIND YOU, I’M NOT ADMITTING TO ANYTHING, I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS CUTE!!!

Blessings, as always, CIAO “Kitty”

  1. If I could be 20 again I would have a gigantic crush on Ignazio but at my age I just love him. The other two also. Have no idea why but it is OK. Now I am a grandmother worried for their well being. I think they and we are all looking for Eurovision to be over and the start of their Italian concerts. They have been so much in demand in such short time and had to sing “Grande Amore” practically every day and I believe they are suffering from repetition. I know they will regain their ‘passion’ and do a great performance in Vienna. I worry about them playing soccer and getting hurt and on and on. I have a nutty family at home and now I just added some extra people to my worry list.

  2. Enjoyed your Journey. I start my day listening to “A Beautiful Day” to get my attitude in the right place. Sometime during the day I listen to Ignazino sing “Memories” and then I can tackle anything that comes my way.

  3. Thanks Kitty, for that wonderful “trip”. I will save and go again an again!! And Gina, I ditto that grandmother thing! One can’t help it! I, too, have enough to be concerned about, but these young men are just so precious that we must add them to our”worry” list! Let’s add them to our prayer list, also!! Dot….

  4. Kitty that was an amazing script. Have you ever thought of writing a book. With the wonderful ideas you have given us I am going to start on that journey.
Gina every day I feel 20 because that is how Ignazio makes me feel. I can’t help myself I am totally in love with him. Every ache & discomfort is stamped down because I will not let it take over my mind to stop me from doing what I got up in the morning to do. The pictures on my wall of Ignazio give me so much joy & hearing their voices keep my mind singing so when I turn off the music it is still twirling around in my head
I find & read every thing I can about our precious young men.
Thank you Kitty for your superb article to find pleasure of learning more about Il Volo and thanks for posting it Marie.

  5. Kitty, You certainly have writing talent. Like our guys, talent should be shared. I feel about Piero as you do about Ignazio. I wish I could travel to Italy and especially Sicily. The poem you posted was spot on. It’s about where I am in life, but the boys make me feel young. My friends still think I am nuts. So what. I am keeping fingers crossed for Eurovision success. Chio. Especially a video clip of – Gianluca singing BESAME MUCHO
It was part of the many videos that Came up on Flashback Friday (that Were in his group of videos (, & there was 1 for each of “our” boys)
Can you help me find it again? Tell me where etc
It is Certainly a one time performance & lovely
But Hidden away in the iT space
    thank you

  7. Kitty, what a beautiful article. I appreciate all the time this must have taken to put together. I will take “the trip” this weekend and enjoy every moment. You are a gifted writer. I, too, am a grandma who worries and feels so protective of these special young men. Couldn’t love them any more if they were my very own! As grandparents we have the wisdom and knowledge that comes with life experience that enables us to see the unique and exceptional qualities these guys possess. They are truly in a league all of their own and what a special place that is! 🙂

    1. You have to highlight them, click on copy and then open youtube and paste them in the search bar. Then hit enter and it will come up. If you don’t know how to do that, copy down the title carefully, then go to youtube and type it in the search bar and hit enter. Copy them down EXACTLY as they are, the spaces, etc. and it should work! Let me know if you are successful!

  8. Dear Kitty great article you wrote I know what you mean about worrying about the guys they sure seem to be extremely busy and I wish they could take a real break away from all the limelight for a while but I guess that will have to wait. I just say a little prayer each morning that God be with our guys and take care of them especially my Piero..

  9. Kitty, thank you once again for a lovely article. You must have been a writer somewhere along your life. I too, as the other ladies mentioned, have the guys singing in my head 24/7. I go to sleep with “L’IMMENSITA’ and CANZONE PER TE and lo and be hold, I awake to ROMANTICA. It’s hilarious. I can’t explain it but who cares. When my great grandson (Gerhardt is 2 yrs old, born 2/11/13) opens my tablet and sees a concert picture of me and the guys as the space saver, he squeals and claps his hands enthusiastically, ” Bravo, bravo” (I taught him that). He says, ” grt namma, it’s VOLO”. I’m teaching him early who the great singers are and then his little brother KASIMIR, is next. I just love when Gerhardt says “Gianluca”. My personal favorite. I thank you once again Kitty for a great journey. I have a playlist of our guys from all over the world. I love them.

  10. Kitty – this was so amazingly creative! I felt I was there with you and them the whole time reading this!! Maybe someday I’ll have some time to take the virtual tour with you, too!! 🙂

  11. Somehow I have lost the message that had the 5 new songs on video, including Romantica. Can someone either send it to me or tellme how to find it? Thank you so much. Jacque

    1. Jac, go to “Archives” in gray on the upper left of this page. Click on “April 2015” then scroll down to the post on the 24th. It will always be there for you.

      1. I must have a different set-up, there is no gray at top of page and no archives either. Could you send me the original email? Thaks again for your help. Jacque
