I’d yell, you’d yell, we’d all yell for, Gelato? ~ Ann Cruise/Pat Ward

Ok, so it’s not quite the same as the “you scream, I scream, ice cream,” but it’s the closest I could get!  Lol!  However, if you pronounce it with the really bad grammar of “dj” sound with the “I’d and you’d”…. well, I claim poetic license here. 🙂

Anyhow, Ann Cruise sent in this little article on gelato and nearing the end of summer for gelato 1most, thought we’d throw it in, so we could catch the last few rays of the season, while enjoying a cool and creamy, Italian treat.

Luckily, these days, we don’t have to travel all the way to Italy to enjoy delicious gelato.  There are quite a few good brands you can buy in your grocer’s freezer section, and at least around the Detroit area, several local eateries have the stuff home-made right on site!  We have two in Detroit area that I’m aware of (although I’m sure there are more)…one being Antonio’s (of the Antonio’s restaurant chain who sponsored the guys), located at their Canton location.  They have a gelato bar!  The other place, a little further north of there in Plymouth, is Cantoro’s, where they also have an gelato 2awesome assortment  in the midst of their Italian specialty food market.

Here is the link and story from Ann…. (fyi… when you click on the link, it takes you to the newspaper.  It shows the first several paragraphs, then says to click “here” to keep reading.  Please be sure to click “there.”  You do not have to be a member of the paper to finish reading the article.)  🙂

Bloomberg: The World’s in Love With Italian Gelato | Italian Sons and Daughters of America

Italiana Bloomberg: The World’s in Love With Italian Gelato Bloomberg offers some tasty data on this coveted confection. The following article, written by Chiara…

Pat was going to write this article, but was feeling a bit under the weather (almost literally, after the eclipse yesterday, where she lives in Missouri got a torrential downpour of rain!)  But duty bound as she is, she found this clip on Lemon Ginger Gelato…

I’m also enclosing a link to You Tube, so you can watch all the videos you want on the history, making, and eating of gelato, the world over!  I watched a few and they are pretty good!

  1. When we went to Italy and my husband’s brother joined us he was very young and saved to come to Europe. When we all landed on St. Marco’s square they had “GELATO” stands and Rick wanted to treat the four little children. Well he nearly cried when they told him the total price.
Our grocery chain has Gelato in nice containers and I have had to stop buying because I could sit and eat the whole thing. It is so smooth.

    1. Gina you’re perfectly right, I would never get ice cream in Piazza S, Marco because it is known that it is one of the most expensive places.
Fortunately it is not so everywhere.

  2. Ann / Pat, this is a very tasty post.
I have just come back from Sicily and I’m sending you a video of one of Sicilian specialties, the ice cream brioches.
I tell you I did not taste this brioches, too many calories to dispose of.
    Enjoy the video.

A brioches, a layer of ice cream, a layer of whipped cream, peanuts, biscuit cones and chocolate splash.

    1. OMG, you are right, Pat! or maybe 5? there must be a whole pint of gelato on there! Reminds me a tad of a hot fudge cream puff. Don’t know if that is just a Sanders/Detroit thing or not? You take a big cream puff, cut in half, stuff with 2 – 3 scoops of ice cream, put the top back on and then pour hot fudge, chocolate, or caramel sauce on top and then top with whipped cream! Sometimes no whipped cream. Was a favorite treat of mine with my mom. We’d go up to the local Sanders – a sweets and ice cream store, sit at the counter and order one of these. Yum!

      1. I have never heard of a a hot fudge cream puff! Sounds as sinful as the brioche! When I worked at a local bakery while in high school I used to have to manually pump the cream into the cream puffs.I would put the cream into a bowl-like contraption and it would flow down to the bottom where a pointed nozzle stuck out. I would impale a cream puff on the nozzle and pump the handle to fill it…..a motion similar to pumping water from a well. My arm would be sore for days afterward! If you pumped too much cream inside they would pop their tops! That didn’t happen often and if it did I would just eat the cream puff! No, I didn’t do that on purpose! Well, maybe once in a while! 😉

  3. I hope everyone in the US got to see the eclipse. It was spectacular here in Maryland and we only had about 80%. Last Friday we went drove to Richmond, Virginia to see a British Invasion tribute concert by a band called The English Channel. We went out to dinner at Roberto’s Italian which is located across from the Richmond International Airport. Roberto’s is in front of a run down motel and does not look like much either outside or inside. But they have some of the best Italian food I have had anywhere. The mozzarella sticks and stuffed jalapeno’s were outstanding. The eggplant Parmigiana was the best I have had anywhere. The ravioli were equally outstanding. And the portions were huge. We took home enough for a second large meal. The gelato is homemade made. The cherry gelato was absolute heaven. Ironically the pistachio gelato was the only disappointment of the meal. I would recommend trying Roberto’s if you are near Richmond. Delizioso. Godere della fine dell’estate. Enjoy the end of the summer.

    1. Restaurant sounds amazing! Sometimes these little hole in the wall places have the best food. Like the drive-in ,diners, and dives show. 🙂
Yes, saw the eclipse here in Detroit, but nothing to speak of really. It barely got “cloudy” and when you looked through the glasses, it just looked like this tiny crescent yellow-orange “moon” even though you knew it was the sun.

  4. I just bought the Breyer’s gelato. That it was cookie dough flavor should have tipped me off. It is not bad but it just tastes like regular ice cream to me.

    1. Yes, to be honest, most gelato does taste like regular ice cream to me, too! Cold, sweet, creamy…. 🙂 Yeah, don’t think cookie dough is real popular in Italy? 🙂

      1. Really good gelato does not taste like ice cream. I think you are right: cookie dough is probably not a traditional flavor of gelato in Italy. That should have been the top off!

  5. Love all of the gelato information here. Thanks to Ann and to Jana for putting it all together! Thanks to, Daniela, for that brioche video! That was a huge dessert! I bet it was good! 😉

    1. If anyone actually ate one of those, I think it would be their meal for the entire day! The original “ice cream sandwich?” 🙂

  6. I recently discovered

    in Portland, Oregon.
I can’t believe I left my phone in my car (and a friend was driving)! The gentleman serving us looked darn close to Piero!
I told him the only thing they could do to improve would be to play IL VOLO!

I’m going back for a photo & more
Cioccolato with Stracciatella! Holy Moly that was good! These guys are the Real Deal!
Pirate, we gotta make plans! 😊

Thanks for the inspiration and education, Ann and Pat!

    Ciao!
    Jeanine

    1. Sounds heavenly, Jeanine! You definitely need to get pictures of this guy! Take in a CD of IL VOLO and show him! 🙂

    2. Okay! When do you want to go! You had me at ” looked darn close to Piero”…. plus I do have a weakness for Gelato
