AND SO IT BEGAN by Kate Spencer

It all began on Wednesday the 10th June at 19:27 to be precise.
I received a message from Gina Corbett, a fan friend from Ireland, notifying me that Il Volo had announced their upcoming concert on the 6th October 2024 this very year!! I could hardly believe what I was reading as I had almost given up all hope of them ever coming back to the UK.
But, here it was, in black and white, and I was already getting very excited by the prospect of actually seeing the boys in the flesh (as it were). What also pleased me the most, was that they were to perform at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Had it been a larger venue like the O2 or somewhere in Manchester I wouldn’t have thought of going as they are just too big and too far for me to cope with, especially alone. I had already said this to my good friend Alice Belles from America who understood my trepidation at such a prospect. But I knew how much she wanted me to see them because she had been to one of their concerts and thoroughly enjoyed it! (especially Piero)
So, here I was, sat on my own deciding the best way to purchase a ticket. Of course I wanted a front row seat but wasn’t a member of the Official Fan Club so what chance did I stand. The pre-sale was happening the very next day, the 12th, and so I had to make up my mind quickly.
I started by looking at the Theatres own website to check what and when they would be selling their tickets. But I also knew that Ticketmaster was probably the main one to go for. So, my alarm set for the following morning for a reminder to call the theatre at dead on 10am the next day. And there I was, stuck in a queue! But I just had to be patient and see it through because, more than anything else, I wanted a ticket regardless.
While I was on hold I thought I would log on to Ticketmaster and see what there was.
This being the first time of ever buying a concert ticket, and in a hurry, I saw the seating plan and went for it, as I could always drop the call once I’d gotten my ticket.
I clicked on the word stalls, saw rows of seats and chose an end aisle seat on what I thought was the front row. In my haste to secure a ticket at all cost I had hit “Buy” before I had a chance to see the price of £30 and I’m sure you can guess the rest. You know the old saying, less haste more speed, well I took no notice!
At 10.38 on June 11th, Gina messaged me to say she had bought her ticket and had a front row seat. My heart sank. I asked how she had managed it and was told she clicked a link from an email direct from the Theatre as she had registered for pre-sale.
I had completely forgotten that I had done the same the day before but hadn’t seen an email from them. So, here I go, and in fact I do find one from them so clicked on the link not knowing what would be left to buy.
To my utter amazement, there was a lone ticket for the front row and almost centre stalls. I was starting to panic now as I needed to get that ticket before anyone else could have it, so, once again in my haste I clicked and bought. Phew! I made it. So now I am the proud owner of a front row seat to see the one and only Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca – Il Volo. Not only that, but Gina and I are just 1 seat apart, and so I am hoping that whoever has seat A29 would be very kind and swap with us.
If anyone could have seen the biggest grin my face, they would wonder what had just happened. 😁
During all of these events, I was in touch with another fan, Roz Walters, who was having trouble getting her tickets. What an ordeal to go through, but she managed. As did Renata who I am hoping to meet up with in late July. I want to go to London as it’s been so long since I was there, just to get my bearings, find the Theatre and my hotel and have some lunch and a drink with her. I’m sure everyone I have mentioned will meet up. If there are any other fans who would like to do the same, please contact me on Messenger. Its great to put faces to names as many others have done  in the past.
To say I was excited, ecstatic, over the moon, filled with joy etc, etc is an understatement and I am still smiling while I write this article. I just wanted to share my experience of the “befores” rather than the “afters” as we see plenty of pictures and videos from each time the boys sing. No doubt I will have a lot more to share though once the day has been and gone. I don’t want to wish the time away, but hurry up October 🙂
I hope you all find this interesting, especially if you are thinking about buying tickets for any of their concerts. But I know some of you are well experienced in this matter, having attended several. And if anyone would like a balcony seat, I have a spare ticket. 😊

  2. I too am thrilled to have tickets for 6th October as I am 80 years old and never thought I would get to see them in London.I only found il volo 2 years ago and they have changed my life for the better.I adore Gianluca’s voice as well as him being a beautiful human being, I just think they are all superb together.

      Herzlichst
      Ursula

      1. Danke schon , I am sorry that you cannot travel ;I will go with my daughter who thinks it very funny that I am so much loving il volo at my age Christine

    2. Don’t be embarrassed that you’re an Il Volo fan, Christine. I turned 92 in May and sing their praises to whoever will listen! Dol.

    3. Hi Christine, I’m 80 and my kids have lost their minds over mom being a groupy at my age!! They don’t know what they are missing IL VOLO, Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio are the VERY BEST,! Enjoy your concert, I’ve only been to one but I’m making plans to go at least twice next year when they finally come back to US again, one hopefully being in Italy! 🎶🎵🎼🎤💖💖💖

    4. Hi Christine, I am an Octogenarian too (81) and like you, after thinking I’d probably never get to see the boys “live” I’m now looking forward excitedly to seeing them in London.

  3. WTG Kate my UK friend. I enjoyed the article very much. Now we’ll need another one from AFTER the concert on all your excited feelings of seeing them. They are so much more handsome then the videos can show. 😁🥰

  4. Well done Kate on getting the ticket your heart desired for 6 October at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. I understand the excitement (and the panic buying ) just to be there. I have tickets for the Royal Circle for my sister and I … and I only found out about the extra date in London through this fantastic Scriptangel Blog. So grateful for this information and community page.
Enjoy every second of the show….
    GRANDE AMORE 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

  5. You will be over the moon again once you hear them sing live. I know, because I attended 5 concerts already, one of them in the Royal Albert Hall in London. That one was truly magic. I myself will see them in october too in Dusseldorf Germany also in front row. Enjoy your concert to the max!

    Ursula

  7. My husband and I made equally hasty plans to attend the Il Volo concert that was being held in Sunrise, FL USA back in 2022. This was also my first time ordering concert tickets and I clicked on seats that turned out to be in row 20.
Being elderly, I couldn’t imagine I would be able to see anything from that distance, especially if those in front of us stood up. So, (embarrassed that we’d already spent $400 on tickets) we decided to purchase tickets in row 3 as well as for the Meet and Greet. I actually tried to give away the first set of tickets but without any luck. Oh, well, chock it up to a newbie’s error. So glad we got the closer seats and the Meet and Greet package!!! So worth it!! Now, just waiting, semi patiently, for tickets for the USA tour to go on sale.
Hoping you and your pals have a marvelous Il Volo experience! Enjoy the waiting….anticipation is part of the fun!

  9. Hello, Kate! Thanks for letting us know that you got tickets to the London Il Volo concert in October. Your friend (and mine) Roz Walters has emailed me to say that she is going with a friend to the concert. Roz and I met through this column in January, 2022 and have been corresponding regularly ever since.

I would love to be going as well, but, living in Canada it is out of the question. I’ve seen them twice, both times in Toronto. The first time was in 2011 when they were just starting out and the second time was in 2022, after they had eleven years under their belt. Absolutely wonderful both times and, if they come to Toronto in 2025 and I’m able at 92 yrs. of age, I’ll go again for an expensive but worth it, Meet and Greet.

Please let us have your thoughts after being at their concert in October. All the best, Dol.

  10. Hi Kate, congratulations on your first ticket see the boys in London….they are truly worth the price!🥹 This was a fun article read, it’s nice to get to know more IL VOLOERS! Wouldn’t it be fun to one day have a world reunion for all of us to meet at one of their concerts! ENJOY your evening with our boys (to men)!! They do put on a terrific show. Gianluca (GG) is my favorite, love his beautiful voice and so sweet and kind personality! Of course I do love Piero and Ignazio too, they are all different but equally talented!
    Thank you, Carol 💖💖💖🤗🎼🎤🎵🎶🙏🏻☮️🩷

  11. Congratulations! I didn’t sleep at all when I purchased the tickets for the show in Australia few years ago and CAN absolute relate to what you are saying. A certain adrenaline comes over you and you make all these errors, you stop breathing until that cart has your tickets and you have secured them at all costs….I am eagerly waiting for when they hopefully announce a show here in Australia Melbourne. My mum is 84rs young and always asks me when they will be coming again. We watch their concerts over and over and hold on to hopefully relive the same euphoric experience once more. Enjoy the show and above all enjoy life, as its way to short. Ciao xx

  12. I am so happy for you and getting a front row seat! I can only hope I will have the same good fortune when they announce their Canadian dates (I expect they will be Toronto but would love for Vancouver too) but wherever they go I’ll not be far behind! I am so worried in my enthusiasm I will press the wrong button and lose out! I get stressed out trying to figure out the time change! They don’t give us a long time to participate! If anyone has any advice or shortcuts, please keep me in mind ❤️
Gianluca is my first love of the 3 men! He has a soul and heart of a special man! He sings with passion, emotion and his eyes are filled with love.💕 He is so well read and a wonderful speaker filled with empathy and ❤️‍🩹
Piero and his love of Opera has challenged me to understand this genre of music. To me since San Remo, he has come out with so much more personality and humour!
And then there is Ignazio- the talented and entertainer he just loves to play! He is also an exceptional musician, singer and talented producer – put them all together and Il Volo is perfect! Can’t wait to see him get married to such a beautiful woman! Let the party begin ……….

  13. Congratulations Kate, I loved reading about your excitement at purchasing tickets to your first concert. You will surely have fun and enjoy the whole evening and then you will think “it’s all over” and you will go through “abstinence” until the next concert, because being able to see them live is truly a great emotion. We look forward to reading your impressions and also your other articles. Good!! 🥰

  14. Oh Kate – you put a smile on my face and I laughed reading your story. I SO very much know exactly the feelings and emotions you have been going through. I have been right there 5 times myself. Each time having me in full panic !

I do always purchase via the IL VOLO’s fansite – and hence TicketOne, when it comes to Italy – but as I don’t speak a word Italian and my internet connection is mega slow, it is a true nightmare. Each time. Firstly our dear guys do not leave us much time to prepare at all – as in general they do not announce their concerts more than few hours prior to the pre-sale openings – leaving you with no time to consider whether to go at all? – and if more options to which city/venue? – how to get there? – going alone or with family/friends – or? But you HAVE to make a very quick decision and the panic sets in!

I live in Copenhagen, Denmark, and IL VOLO has never performed here (and probably never will), so I shall have to react immediately once I see them announce concerts in either Italy or any nearby North-west European country – and meaning, that I shall have to fly for 2-3 hrs. or spend 2-3 days on the road to get to there. And how to decide on that in just some 50 min. which was the case at my latest ticket purchase? That was when they announced the Italian Summer-concerts 2024. All 16 concerts were announced at the same time, and in less than 1 hr. from the ticking in of the mail in my inbox, the pre-sale would open up! That’s when the first panic arose. Where is my husband? I need to ask him if he would consider doing yet a summer holiday to Italy? – or if I can go on my own? Luckily, he was home and without much thinking he accepted that our summer holiday could once again go to Italy.

But which venue should we choose for the purpose? Looking at the list we were familiar with the names of just 3-4 of the towns mentioned, so next thing we found ourselves in front of the computer studying Google maps in the hope of being able to locate the different venues. (Wish I would have been more attentive in school during geography. lessons..). Once having located most of them we had to make a choice in two minutes and then rush to the Fansite to obtain the needed code and then on to the TicketOne site. We activated both my husband’s and my computer plus one of our mobiles in the hope that at least one of them would come through. My husband succeeded but once in it appeared, that all the dates popping up there were different from the ones stated in the mail from the FanClub – what!!! Now we were more than panicing as the time had now passed 20 min. from the pre-sale start…. By co-incidence we clicked on one of the venues only to find that the next page popping up had the correct dates? Soooo confusing!!! Finally, we found our chosen venue – Maceratta – only to learn from the FanClub instructions that Maceratta and another venue were NOT yet on sale but first the following week. About to leave the page – for some unknown reason – I said to my husband, let’s have a look at the seat configuration already now – so albait we clicked a button saying NOT OPEN for sale yet – voila, the seat map popped up and it appeared that the sale was already going on (and the very best seats already sold…)!!! Confused – you bet! We continued on in the hope that we would make it – and we did :-). Next day the pre-sale was closed and the dates corrected. But can you imiagine, how we felt?

Just going through the purcase process is, however, a nightmare. Once in you have 13 minutes only to finalize the purchase. Fist you need to find suitable seats – once chosen – you continue on only to get a lot of questions and options in the Italian language that you don’t understand – so you tick off extras of which you have no clue as to what is all about. Just to be on the safe side. Then they want full names, credit card info, pysical adress etc., and you type and type trying to keep up with the time limit. We were running low as now our credit card company wanted us to re-confirm this and that and you shall wait for security codes and double checks that you are you…. All while the clock ticks. If you haven’t made it within the 13 minutes the chosen seats are lost and you shall have to start all over… So what can I say: Purchasing tickets for an IL VOLO concert is the most stressful thing in the world – BUT – once you are seated there and the 3 guys enter the stage in front of you and starts singing…. well, then you forget all your troubles and you hear yourself saying: it is all worth the while. So I am sure that you will have a fantastic time. Enjoy and warm greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark!

  15. Hello all! I’d like to welcome Kate to our site and congratulate her on such a lovely account of her getting tickets. It is so relatable to so many of us and it’s always like the “first time” with the guys!

We look forward to her next chapter!

  16. One more who had never ordered tickets on line with a time restriction and also being 75 at the time. This was the last time they were in the US.

The original set of dates was in March. Nothing close to my house, so I would need to stay overnight. I chose Radio City Music hall in NYC. First that I found said row G, not bad i thought, bought them. Only to realize the aa-z rows were in front of the single character rows. Now I’m not happy. Kept looking. Found two 4th row seats for mobility impaired, bought them. Then I found 2 front row seats near the end. Now I had to find friends who wanted to go. No easy task…. All settled and Il Volo changed the dates because of covid to October. Well cannot switch the dates because it was to be in the middle of a scheduled cruise originating from Boston.

We were able to get 2 tickets in the second row in Boston incredibly it was the night before the scheduled cruise. This was good, however, we postponed the cruise also because of covid but drove the 6 hours to see the concert. This was wonderful. We live in NW NJ.

While doing this my friend agreed to driving us to the Connecticut show the weekend before Boston. We got floor seats on the side. Not too bad for the size of the arena. My friend who had no idea who they were, loves them as much as I do.

After getting home from Boston a day and missing them as much as I did. I wanted more.

I looked up the next concert. Wow, it was in Pennsylvania, only two hours from my house. I had not actually driven that far in a long time. I looked for tickets, I only needed one. There was one lonely one at the end of the second row, oh my, I could not leave it to stay there by itself. I decided to drive, rent a scooter to get around, and go. I also bought a meet and greet ticket and went to the soundcheck. On my drive there, my friend called and said she bought a ticket and would be driving down as soon as work was over. She made it in time. This was amazing, we stayed overnight and had a wonderful time.

In my opinion, I absolutely love the very close seats the best. I also bought a ticket to the live stream they did from Florida for the hurricane victims.

Love all of these guys. If you ask me which is my favorite, my answer can change constantly. They have changed my life. My husband can’t believe he is married to a 77 year old groupie. I sew patches,Il Volo, on my clothes and spread the word as much as I can.

I have already contacted my friend to talk about where we should go to see them next and where to sit. Hubby did love the show as well.

  17. I’m 8 rows back from front and on the aisle. When I got through all the first 3 rows were empty but dismissed them because it says stage it quite high. Enjoy , like you I can’t wait xx

  18. I loved reading this and all the comments as I have had such similar experiences with ticket buying. I wish I was going to London to see them, I live in Australia and when they did come here, I was away!

  19. Bless you! I would have done the same thing, but because I had to have a travelling companion I put the cart in front of the horse twice. Found a lovely friend to travel interstate with & bought the tickets (very expensive & nowhere near front) but I so wanted to see Il Volo after years admiring them I took the gamble.
Piero won my heart before they became the famous Il Volo. He seemed so fragile. Gianluca looked as if he was born to be a star & Ignazio (for all his doings) seemed a different person (perhaps a son of the great Paverotti).

  20. Hi I have just found Il Volo. What a wonderful group. I have all their cds. I cannot listen to anybody else now. Their songs are so great. Their voices are perfection. I was about to visit Italy to see them in Rome then they posted the Drury lane concert. I have purchased one 3rd row stall ticket . Cannot speak a word of Italian but its such a lovely language. Also Gianluca is so cute. Typical Italian. Can’t wait for oct 6th.

    1. Welcome Marcia! There is so much to read here and we all love the guys! I have been slowly learning Italian since I saw the guys in 2017 in concert. I would have been to two more concerts but Covid and back surgery kept me from going. I’m going next year when they come back to the U.S. If you are interested in learning Italian there are a couple free apps you can try. Duolingo is one and the other is through my library system called Mango. Anyway, have fun reading all the posts from Daniela and me, Susan, Jana, Kelly, Marie, Myron and all the others who have published here. 😊💕
