My First IL VOLO concert by Sheila Kilpatrick

Hi, this is Sheila Kilpatrick reporting on our boys in Niagara Falls!
Some of you might know this is my first concert. I have never seen the guys in person!  I live in Vancouver, had to fly to Toronto then drive with a friend to Niagara Falls!  My friend had never seen or followed our boys!  Her preference in the world of music is very eclectic and heavy base!
When we arrived at the falls, we were given a couple of tickets to a smaller theatre where there were four life-long friends each playing their music which they loved.  They were all playing either drums or very loud electric guitars that blared high range squeaks and sounds not meant for our ears.  We enjoyed some however left when we could quietly sneak out!  The reason I am telling you this is it gave me the opportunity to explain to her Il Volo was totally opposite to what we had just experienced!

Time for sound check!

Very unorganized but as you might expect I was first in line!  I had broken down my fear of needing my walker – thank the lord – it may help you get to where you want to go!  Anyway, I kept asking why others had their VIP lanyards and I only had the one I made??  Kept being told I would get mine at the meet and greet!  OK, I believed them!!  The boys sang a couple of song and changed a few things as it was a new orchestra (wonderful).  Ignazio then left, making dinner I guess, then Piero jumped down and started shaking everyone’s hand followed by Gianluca!! I said to Gian, why no Vancouver? His reply, I love Vancouver a beautiful city, we haven’t been there for a while – NEXT year?? Be still my heart!

The CONCERT TO END ALL CONCERTS!

I attended the Friday, April 4th concert. The guys were all magnificent and amazing and spectacular from our two FRONT ROW CENTER seats! Not sure how that happened but just sat, smiled and went with the flow! As they were leaving, I reached over and shook Gian’s hand and he smiled said thanks to the crowd again and left the stage!
I learned how wonderful Piero is as a singer and personality! His ability to interact with the crowd was marvelous!  His operatic numbers were amazing, so strong and clear and just spell binding for me to listen to – though not my first choice!

Personally, not a fan of appliqué!  The guys shine on their own!

MEET and GREET

I didn’t have the correct armband etc. so was told I wasn’t on the list!  Do you want to see a 77-year-old cry?? I held it in and explained to a lady in the know apparently, was taken up a floor and she said stay here and I did! Then a tour employee arrived and not only was I on the list, had confirmed two days prior etc., I was now in first in line for the photo shoot!
A short wait then the three stars in my life arrived, I went to stand in between Gian and Ignazio, and Gian said see you in Vancouver!  I told him the song Bridge over Troubled Waters helped me during my husband’s passing and said thanks!

  1. Hi, not a fan of the sparkle suits as well. Interesting Piero suit went missing after Laval. Ciao, Mark from Boston

  2. HIHIHI the tears and fun and unorganized start at the sound check are all normal!!! The enjoyment and love of their music, no matter what you like is amazing !!! They draw you in like water to parched earth!!! I know the feeling well so glad you had that wonderful experience ,,,,, I will forever sing their praises they are truly wonderful men of talent and kindness!!! Blessings!!!

  3. I have been to 4 concerts now: DC, Curitiba Brazil, Zuerich Switzerland and Baltimore. After this last one I said to my friend, ok that’s enough now, but who am I kidding? I love the boys, have been to 1 meet and greet where I also stood between Gian and Ignacio. When I go to my next concert I’ll get a meet and greet ticket again and will stand between Piero and Ignacio. I’m also a great fan of Piero’s operatic voice. Love to all 3, Christa

    1. FOUR! Lucky lady! I have always wanted to go to Switzerland but sadly don’t think it will ever happen! My budget won’t expand any more! The Meet and Greets are way too pricey! Never thought I’d pay for a man, however my heart made an exception!! (And it will again should the circumstances arise)

      1. But Sheila, you got three for the price of one!😘😘😘
Thanks for your report–I sure enjoyed it. Although I’m a bit jealous since Piero and Gian didn’t come down to us at our Clearwater soundcheck. Agree with you about the huge appliques, but didn’t mind Igna’s as much since it was on the lapel.

      2. Judi, the guys didn’t come down to us at our sound check in Davie. 😕 But Piero talked to us from the edge of the stage.

    2. Hello Delicious, Just wondering, any photos I have seen of the Meet & Greet, the fans are standing between Gian and Igna. Haven’t seen any fans next to Piero, or may have missed them. Would like to hear from anyone who got to stand next to Piero — just curious. Dol

      1. I made a dash to Gianluca as he is my shining star 🤩
I would have gone for Piero however he was my second choice (just kidding) I couldn’t miss Gianluca!
The order they came in was the way they stayed!

      2. Hi Dol
When I went to their meet and greet in Las Vegas ( the one before Covid started) I stood between Piero and Ignazio. I have that picture framed and sitting in my bedroom. Piero is wearing a tee shirt that says “ never look back keep on smiling”
Gian is standing on the other side of Piero.

      3. Dol, I stood between Igna and Piero. (Igna is my favorite, and since he’s in the middle, I can’t go wrong.🤭)

  4. Hello, Sheila! So nice to put a face to a name!!! Terrific you finally got to see our Wonderful Three, which inspired you to throw away your walker! 😂😂

I only wish they would come to Ottawa for a concert. Our Arts Center would probably not be big enough, though I did see the Chinese acrobatic group there last year, which was sold out. There is a hockey arena which would be suitable and does hold events such as theirs. Il Volo Management, please take note.

Look forward to reading your posts in future. Hugs, Dol.

    1. Hi Dol
They did come to Ottawa once, a long time ago. Might have been 2012? I drove with my sister to Ottawa and we stayed at my niece who lives there. The Centre was full but there are no aisles which cramped their style. At that time the guys liked to come into the audience several times. We were sitting quite far back—this was before the fan club and presales. But it was worth the trip!

      1. That may have been (and still may be) the reason for them not doing the Arts Center …. no aisles for them to travel while singing. Never thought of that! Thanks, Penina. Dol

    2. They came to Vancouver many years ago, before they grew up!
As soon as I got home I started looking up venues for their next trip here – unfortunately my living room doesn’t fit their needs LOL 😂 😂

  5. It was very nice meeting you and being able to chat as I was right behind you in the sound check line. Thanks for this great review. I returned on Saturday for both the sound check and concert. Another fabulous evening!

    1. Lucky lady! If I had known there was a second show I could have made other arrangements however I couldn’t stay any longer!
I am still baffled why Canada got 3 concerts in their North American tour! No Toronto, Montreal Calgary or VANCOUVER?
Anyway onwards to welcoming Bianca! It’s not too hard to figure out when she will arrive!! She will be the new boss in their house!!

      1. IL Volo gibt nur dort Konzerte wo sie eingeladen werden. Hat vermutlich organisatorische Gründe und der Verantwortung.

  6. Thanks for sharing your experience and photos. A night surely to be an outstanding time in your life !

  7. Always happy to hear of others relishing the in-person experience of a live concert. Nothing compares!

I hesitate to criticize, but I agree about the appliquéd tuxes, just a bit dorky. The half-and-half tux was a little better as were the rhinestone and velvet ones. But there is nothing classier than a well-cut traditional tux.

    1. Sally I didn’t want to appear negative however I’d rather they decorate the set as the boys shine on their own!

  8. I went to both Niagara concerts and they were wonderful. I went to 7 total and these 2 were the first time the guys came down to talk and shake hands/hugs in a long time. They are special young men. I’m sorry you thought it was unorganized at the sound check. It was typical though. A set time and place, then maybe an hours wait until we can go in. No confusion there just listen and follow the rules. I’m sure Ignazio wanted to call Michele because he left after 1 or 2 songs each time. She would be 7 hours ahead of us.

    Liebe Grüße an alle

    1. I love what ever they wear ! And good luck with upcoming concerts and baby Bianca. Congratulations to Ignazio and Michelle and uncles Piero and Gianluca and grandpa Michele and both families too!
      ❤️😘🙏

  10. I so enjoyed reading about your first concert with Il Volo… It was beautifully written with beautiful photos as well… I am sure you were genuinely emotional during the concert and even the Meet and Greet…It’s hard not to be… These three fine young men manage to steal your heart as they entertain you with their magnificent voices as well as their loving personalities…
Thank you for sharing your experience here…

  11. Well done Sheila, you wrote a beautiful account of your first experience, the photos you attached are also very beautiful.
I understand your emotion, finally a dream come true, but I would also like to know what the friend you brought with you to see our boys thought, since she didn’t know them at all.
I really hope they come to Vancouver next year, and you will write an even better review!! Well done Sheila!!

    1. Great question 58daniela! My friend liked them a lot – especially Piero and his voice! She was extremely impressed by him. I was attracted to Gianluca because he sings with his heart and soul! His expressions to the words (Music of the Night) melted me in a puddle!
I will freely admit I really admired Piero – not only his voice but the way he interacted the crowd and Gian! He too has grown to be an actor and philosopher and comedian with a wonderful voice!
Igna is the bouncing bean, powerful voice and extremely talented with technology and all instruments!
      Together they make beautiful music!

    2. Thank you Eileen! I’m 2 years older than you so I better meet you in Vancouver some year! Vancouver is stunning this week, trees all in blossom, gardens filled with daffodils, hydrangeas, tulips etc! Must mean rain is coming to blow everything all around!
Please get your politics in order – Canadians aren’t travelling to the States at the moment!
      LoveSheila

      1. Hi Sheila, as an American, born and raised, in all my 81 years I have never been so dismayed and embarrassed by my homeland as I am now. This is no way to treat our neighbors or allies! I’ve met and been friends with many neighbors in Florida who come from Canada and now thinking of selling their homes😞. I’ve been to the great north several times but usually Montreal and Quebec, I’d love to visit beautiful Vancouver! It saddens me to have neighbors feel so dismissed as all of you, please know that’s not the view of most Americans…..we all deserve respect and the ability to manage our own country as does Ukraine and Gaza…. Greatly despise leaders who believe their more privileged that the rest of us. We don’t want to annex anyone, that’s the view of only a few!
Hoping this will help you forgive the rest of us. Happy Easter my friend, may yours be full of our Lord’s blessings.
        In friendship, Carol❤️☮️

      2. Thank you for your lovely words! I am sad the world is experiencing such anger led by individuals who don’t deserve respect for all humans!
Blessings to you and of course IL VOLO ❤️

  12. Wonderful accounting of your
first in person “visit” with our favorite three! They are indeed difficult to leave from an evening that came to a close so much sooner than you are ready for it to! I’m a bit jealous of your getting so close to my favorite, Gian! Even though I adore all three but I don’t think I’m alone in having one favorite!! They are great entertainers, with unbelievable voices and personalities….it certainly doesn’t hurt they are all so good looking!
God Bless little Bianca, I pray she has a full amount of time to be strong and healthy for her entry into to the world and Ignazio and Michelle’s waiting arms! They will be amazing parents, lucky little girl.🩷
    Carol❤️🤗🎼🎶🎵🎤🙏🏻☮️

  13. How lucky you were to have met them? Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was my very first concert to see them in person. I had a fanclub pass for soundcheck, but sadly, could not afford the meet & greet pass I am 76 and know how you must have felt. They are all remakable men with beautiful voices.

I fell in love with “the boys” when they were promoting their first PBS program from the Detroit Opera House. I lived in Chicago at the time, but still never got to see them in person. I pray I live long enough to see them again when they come back to North America.

I traveled to Vancouver several years ago for a meeting. What a beautiful city and wonderful people. I wish you good health in the coming years so you have another opportunity to see them in person again.

  14. Thank you so much Sheila for sharing your first live encounter with the guys. So well written and great footage. I am so glad on your behalf that everything went fine in the end and that you had the best of times. Now only one thing follows… namely the immediate craving for yet another concert… and just one more… and… You are no doubt hooked forever as most of us here.

Oh those Soundcheck arrangements… as much as I love to take part just as much I hate all the confusions and unnecessary waiting times. I have been “hitting the roof” in anxiety and annoyance at both soundchecks I have managed to anticipate in. I thought the disorganized approach and queuing up for hours was an Italian thing (read lifestyle), but apparently not. Both of mine have been taking place in Italy – Rome and Macerata – and both times details weren’t given till a few hours ahead of time and both times there were confusion as to the assembly points making us rush from the one entrance to the next and back again and then waiting and waiting. Both times we were all checked and ready to enter in due time but for unknown reasons kept waiting further without knowing why and both times the guys had already rehearsed more songs before we were finally let in. The organizers must realize that the majority of the signed up comes from far away – from all over the world – and therefore know how much these soundchecks means to us. Well, I did thoroughly enjoy them once let in though – and in similarity with you last time Piero did likewise jump down the stage and shook hands with each and all of us. That was such a treat and he earned an extra star with me. In Rome Gianluca came down in the area afterwards and signed their new book and chatted with us a bit, so that was great as well and worth all the troubles encountered. I have never been to a Meet & Greet though – must admit that it is out of my economical range – and honesty I don’t know if I would really enjoy it knowing that this is “business” meaning that the guys have to smile and be friendly whether or not they feel like it. Or maybe I’m just jealous of you guys having this opportunity…

Anyhow, so glad for you Sheila, and I’m feeling convinced that they may come to Vancouver next time too. Meanwhile my personal countdown has started as my hubby and I leave primo May to drive some 1800 km each way to attend one of the upcoming concerts in Mantua. I’m getting all excited. Greetings – Kirsten 🇩🇰

    1. OMG Kirsten, your husband must be a Saint! 1800km times 2 is along way! I can hardly wait to read your experience upon your return. I had to look up Mantua and where it was located.
I wish I was younger and had the resources to see Europe and countries in between! For now my method of travel is Google!
Cheers to you, have a wonderful trip, stay safe and look forward to to reading about your adventures 🥰

  15. Lovely photos. How great to be able to see il Volo live and have a photo with them.
I hope one day they will visit the Uk.
    Thank you for sharing.

  16. So glad it all went so well for you Sheila. I saw the guys for the first time last year, (in London)ulfilling my ambition to see them before I got too old to travel. Now of course my ambition is to see them again at least once more.

  17. So glad you can share this with us. A beautiful story. I’ve also had the gift of seeing them in person. They are so personal with each of us.

  18. Sheila, I’m so glad you got to enjoy your first concert. Your photos were great. How lucky you were that Gianluca and Piero came down at the sound check. They have never done that at one I have attended. At the meet and greet we were told no hugs, which I understand . I hope that you will get to attend another concert in the future.

  19. I am so very excited you were able to go to the M&G and oh MY the concert to take your breath away.
What I wouldn’t give to see the in concert and I would melt in a puddle if I got to meet them…..LAWDY I’D CROAK!!!
    WTG pretty lady, Congratulations!

  20. Sheila firstly – thank you for sharing your wonderful experiences with all of us – much appreciated – as many many loyal fans around the world will never have the chance to meet our beautiful guys in person – lucky you!! – you made it!! you made me laugh though – when you said ‘now your method of travel is Google’ – guess what half the world see our gorgeous Piero – Ignazio & Gianluca through Google or YouTube – one thing I would like to add is I feel our lads do not need too much glitz either – it is not a criticism – they are very handsome & it is a little bit over the top – thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us – much love.

  21. What a beautiful and emotive report !
I started following Il Volo in May 2023.
A lateral but wonderful Discovery that I am grateful for.
Só faz over 30 concerts and I will be in Mantova for the 3 concerts next May 8.10 and 11..
Very very happy and in June I will be 70 !
I do eish all the best to Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio and of course Michele Torpedine that condução their career só beautifully !

  22. Ivete you must live in Italy and/or else own a bank? 😂
I hope you get good seats and wonder if you do the sound checks and M & G? The co-ordination of orchestras, equipment etc must be incredible!
You are a very blessed lady and I wish you nothing but the best! My review was done as I achieved my dream! Now my new dream is to go again! I want them to come to Western Canada however political differences in our country may get in the way!
    Ciao!

    1. Amazing to be able to go to all concerts in Italy. Good luck Ivete. I am envious.
And Sheila thank you for sharing your experience.
I hope that Il Volo will come to the Uk, they don’t visit here very often, I don’t think they get promoted as well although I know they had a sold out concert last October in London , which at that time I didn’t know them, I don’t think people know them that well here in the Uk.
But I love reading everyone’s experiences and I follow videos etc on Instagram. They are amazing and adorable.
Each one with different qualities and ranges.
Their manager Michele did well to put them together and promote their gift to the public. He needs to be rewarded.
      Thank you again.
