A MEETING IN MILAN by Daniela

I met Milagros Costabel!

She is truly a special and charismatic young woman, full of energy and good humor.
Our meeting took place in Milan in March, a day full of clouds and rain.
But before starting my story of the meeting, I want to take a few steps back, to 2021 when Milagros sent an email to Flight Crew and Jana, our administrator, forwarded it to me.
She had written a beautiful letter that I then immediately published on Flight Crew, where she told us how she had become a fan of Il Volo and what their music had meant to her.
For those who have not read that post, I will report it here.

So Milagros got into Harvard, very impressive, kudos to her.

But let’s get to the present day.

About a month ago, towards the end of February, Milagros sent another email to Flight Crew for me, here’s what she wrote:
“Hi there! I hope you are well and excited for Il Volo’s US tour!
I don’t think you’ll remember me—I only talk to Jana regularly—but a while ago, 3 years ago I think, I wrote to you to tell you my story with Il Volo, how listening to one of their songs inspired me to try to change my life and I ended up leaving Uruguay, my home country, and getting into Harvard on a full scholarship. Time flies…and I’m about to graduate! (writing this seems a bit crazy to me)
I’ve done a lot of things over the years; I traveled to 14 countries with my guide dog, giving talks around the world, advocating for disability at the United Nations in New York… and obviously well, now
I’m about to graduate and the truth is I feel that none of this would have happened if not for that second of inspiration at a time that – no joke – was one of the darkest of my life.
I decided to buy a ticket to go and see them in Boston as a graduation present for myself…and the meet and greet! I saved for years for this so I’m very excited but obviously I’m also nervous because I’m afraid that everything will go wrong, that it will only be 5 seconds, a photo and that’s it… and well, as I’m blind at the end of the day the photo doesn’t matter so much to me, I kind of feel like I’m coming full circle and thanking all the things that brought me here today and this is my way of doing it with them even though of course they would not care at all.
I just wanted to write to  share this with you all- I continue to read the site very often, I love it because you always post translations of the interviews and since I can’t see subtitles it’s very useful to me! Thank you for everything you do.
Best,
Mili.”
I immediately got in touch with Mili and she told me that she was thinking of coming to Italy for about ten days before the Boston concert and exactly that she was thinking of coming to Milan. What a nice surprise, Milan is an hour away by train from Brescia and so we agreed to meet in person in Milan, truly an unmissable opportunity!
So on the afternoon of Saturday, March 15, my husband and I took the train to Milan, we had agreed to meet in Piazza Duomo and exactly in front of a toy store.
Unfortunately the weather, which a week before had been splendid and warm, from the day before the meeting had become cold and rainy, but it didn’t matter.
Then there was the problem of the language, Milagros speaks Spanish and English, I speak Italian and a little English, but even that wasn’t an obstacle.
After a few minutes of visual search, the Piazza Duomo, despite the weather, was full of people, we knew that Mili had her trusty guide dog Indio with her, and finally I saw her, she was right on the other side of the intersection.
After greetings, we immediately felt in tune, she is truly a sunny girl, always smiling.
I thought that someone would accompany her to Piazza Duomo, but no, she was alone with her dog and she confided in me that she always travels alone with Indio. This was her first time in Italy and she came to Milan which is a chaotic city due to traffic and the amount of people.
While we were walking around Piazza Duomo she told me that she will graduate in May, and the gift she gave herself for her graduation was precisely the Il Volo concert.
She told me about her constant travels, she has been to 14 countries, to give conferences on disabilities, in fact I think that maybe Italy was the 15th country she visited.
As we crossed Piazza Duomo on our way to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II she told me that the night before she had been to Navigli, a characteristic place in Milan, full of lively youth life during the evenings, in short certainly not a calm place and she liked it a lot. This place, Navigli, was also featured in the video of Il Volo di Musica Che Resta.
So, chatting pleasantly, we crossed the Gallery and I even had her step on the famous “bull’s balls” to wish her luck.
Milagros is on Facebook and Instagram and if you Google: MILAGROS COSTABEL, you will see how many interviews she has given to prestigious newspapers that have covered her and her lifestyle, such as: BBC, CNN, IL Corriere della Sera, El Observador, Model View Culture etc.
And so we arrived on the other side of the Galleria to take a picture in front of the Teatro La Scala.
Milagros immediately spoke of Piero about his dream of singing an entire opera, perhaps at La Scala!
I think I also understood that her favorite of the three is Piero!
We would have walked to the Castello di Milano if the weather had been more stable, but instead we walked back through the Galleria and then went to a coffee bar and sat down to talk comfortably.
Mili told us about her family, about her mother who had called her the night before worried to know what country she was in. As a mother I understand these worries very well, but I must say that Milagros gave me the feeling of being a very strong and self-confident young woman.
She told me that she was born really small, only 750 grams (1.65 lbs.) and they had to give her oxygen which however took away her sight, so at two and a half months she was already blind.
Her family currently consists of her father, mother, her and a 14-year-old brother.
While we sipped our hot chocolate with cream, she told me that she saved up to be able to buy the ticket for the Il Volo concert in Boston and also the Meet & Greet, but everyone told her that the time at the M&G is very short while her, instead, would like to ask them questions and maybe write about this experience.
Of course we at Flight Crew have passed Mili’s story forward, so that the guys would know about it. Who knows if she will get a few minutes of Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio at her disposal, we will know soon because the Boston concert is coming up.
Of course, we at Flight Crew are waiting for the review of the concert dear Milagros and the impression that our dear guys made on you.
The afternoon hours passed very pleasantly and we returned home, bidding a fond farewell to Milagros.
For my part I must say that I met a very determined young woman, not at all intimidated by life’s events, a strong and courageous woman who will soon graduate.
Let’s cross our fingers that her dream of being able to speak with Il Volo can come true, we wish it with all our hearts Milagros, on the other hand, as the meaning of your name shows, miracles always happen.
A big hug from me and my husband, proud to have made your acquaintance, and of course from all Flight Crew!! ❤️

Who is Going to Both the Sound Check and the Meet/Greet at the Boston Concert on March 31?

Hello All!

This is a very special post I am writing.

About 4 years ago, we put this post together about a young blind girl named Milagros Costabel, also known as, Mili.  She is from Uruguay and at the time of that writing, her dream was to see the guys in Boston, since she is attending Harvard!!  She will graduate soon, and now her dream is coming true!

She is planning on attending the Boston concert and wishes to go to the Sound Check, but is concerned about going alone. (Although she travels the world without fear!)  She also bought the VIP ticket for the Meet and Greet.  She has a beautiful, black leader dog, named Indio.

So, is there anyone that would be willing to meet up with her and guide her through the Sound Check and Meet and Greet areas?

If you are interested in helping her, please email the Flight Crew email address at:  ilvoloflightcrew@gmail.com and I will help to coordinate.

Since she is attending Harvard, her current plan is to get a ride from campus to the concert.  If there is anyone that might want to pick her up, as well, and then take her back after the concert, that would be awesome, although it would be pretty late!!  Mother hen here, worries about her, although she seems to have no fear!  haha!

I also suggested to her to rent a hotel room, although she said she wasn’t interested, if there is anyone that might be willing to let her bunk with them, that would also be awesome.  I’m sure she will be so excited that night and want to share it with someone!!  Will be safer to take a taxi or Uber back when it’s daylight out! (sorry, Mili!)

She does read our site!  So, Mili – this one’s for you!

I’ve enclosed the link to the original post that Daniela wrote back in 2021.  She is the bravest and most incredible person I have ever met!  Please read her story!

IL VOLO – MILAGROS – HARVARD by Daniela

Sometimes, it happens that you receive an e-mail like this, which makes you understand many things, which make you feel emotions and see reality, through the eyes of those who cannot see.
Today I present Milagros to you, indeed I leave the introductions to her.
Hello girls,
This message is going to be a little strange, I really hope I don’t bother you with it.
My name is Milagros, and I am an 18 year old totally blind girl. I’m from Uruguay, and I’ve been  following  Il Volo for more than four years. I even traveled to Argentina to go to one of their concerts. The boys came into my life at a very difficult time, when I was dealing with many things, among them, my uncertainty for the future (people with disabilities…basically we are second class citizens in my country, and the most that is expected of us is to graduate from high school, and even that is considered too much). In some strange way, perhaps, Il Volo’s music gave me some of the strength I needed to keep going.

A month ago I was notified that I had just received a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. I am the second Uruguayan person in history to be selected to study at the college.
Harvard is crazy!!!
My parents never graduated high school so even the idea of going to college seemed far away for me. When I was completing the application (with their music in the background, of course) I realized how much things had changed since I started listening to them until today – and when I got the news…it may not seem to make sense (in the end, many might say it’s just music) but I believe that music, just like words, also has the power to change lives.
In this video, Milagros has just received confirmation of admission to Harvard studies !!
And this past year I worked reporting for foreign media (HuffPost, The Telegraph, Foreign policy etc.) And this may sound silly, but I am sure I could not have made it if it were not for the strength that, although from afar, the music of Il Volo gave me.

I even traveled to Argentina to go to one of their concerts.
That concert was magical. I don’t consider myself a very emotional person, but that day I ended up crying while listening to them sing. I had connected with a couple of girls from Argentina, too, and at that time we could access the sound check with the Il Volo card, so I went with these girls…and I don’t hesitate to say that it was one of the best moments of my life.
I can’t wait for this pandemic to end and see them live again (hopefully in Boston, haha).
Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, I like them all, but Ignazio, his singing, his life story, everything, always made me lean more towards him. I think that, in this world, there are very, very few people who sing like him, at that age. When I went to see them in Argentina (Noche Mágica) listening to him moved me to tears… and that’s not easy.

Yesterday I was listening to music and came across  “The Best Day of My Life”, which for some reason of fate, was the song I was listening to when I finally decided to send in the application to Harvard. Now I think about it and it’s crazy, haha.

Anyway. I just wanted to thank you because this website was (and is) the place where I was always informed of  their updates (besides the guys’ social networks, of course).
I use a program (a screen reader) that basically reads everything on the screen, except for non-described images.
Your site always seemed  truly accessible to me and since  you usually talk about things I miss (like what they post on Instagram, for example), I love reading it, because Instagram is one of the few networks I’m not on (there are a lot of pictures and I get lost haha) but at the same time it’s the one where they seem to be most active.
I always enjoyed reading you guys and I really admire the work you do on and for the guys.

I would love to be able to get these words to them – what they, uh, inadvertently generated, the change they made in me – but that’s impossible.
For a moment I thought very briefly about sending a message to one of the guys on Instagram, but as I don’t use it and I’m sure they will receive many messages per day, in the end I gave up the idea.
So I’ll just thank you. Thank you for everything.
Best,
Milagros

The good news of admission to Harvard caused a sensation and Milagros was interviewed by newspapers and TV. At Harvard she will study Political Science.
Here is the article about her interview.

A young woman from Colonia (Uruguay) age 18 and blind was accepted into Harvard.
An 18-year-old woman, from Colonia, blind, obtained a scholarship to study next year in the United States at Harvard University. The application was accepted among 10,000 applications. That’s how Milagros Costabel found out that she had been accepted to Harvard. The 18-year-old, blind by birth, was astonished to hear when the software read her notification on her laptop welcoming her to one of the most important universities in the world.
The young woman from Colonia graduated in 2019 from the Liceo N ° 1 de Colonia Juan Luis Perrou and during this year she began working for foreign media as a journalist while applying for around 15 Universities with a clear idea: Go out to travel the world.
During these days, Milagros received a communication from the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, to congratulate her. With great expectations, the young Milagros is preparing to begin her career in Political Science at Harvard University next year. Throughout her life, due to her blind condition from birth, Milagros has encountered several obstacles that, based on her efforts, she overcame and today provokes admiration and recognition from family, former teachers and acquaintances.

Milagros on television with her family

Milagros, really many, many compliments, to be admitted to Harvard University is a company to be so proud of.
We are happy that the music of Il Volo has kept you company and also helped you during these years.
We are all very proud of you. Harvard really is an important milestone but how much study commitment still awaits you.
Thanks also for the compliments to our site, we are so happy that our presence on the internet is appreciated by so many people and may also have been of help to you.
What about Il Volo? I don’t know if Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca are fully aware of how much their music, but also their presence, their way of relating, is very important for people.
Milagros, it was a real pleasure to meet you and I assure you that we will do everything possible, so that your story is brought to the attention of Il Volo.

A hug from: Daniela and all the Flight Crew 😘
