JULY 2021 – CROATIA-BULGARIA-ROMANIA by Daniela

And so, after a rainy start, which forced IL VOLO to postpone the concert date in Opatija (Croatia) for the third time (the other two for Covid), the concert finally took place and it was a great success.

But let’s start in order.

Day 4 July, incessant rain and the open air concert, must be postponed.

But on the evening of July 5th, there were no problems. It was all very nice.

Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, beautiful, rested, elegant and as always very good.

The songs performed are part of the 10 Year Tour, so there is nothing of Morricone.

A summary of some songs and moments.

The audience of the Abbazia Summer Scene had the opportunity to finally attend the long-awaited concert of the Volo, the Italian trio famous for modern arrangements of famous Italian opera songs and the interpretation of hits tonight, Monday 5 July, pop in a classic key. Postponed three times due to anti-epidemic restrictions and unfavorable weather conditions, the event was held at the Opatija open theater, achieving great success with the public.

For Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto, it was the third live performance in front of a Croatian audience and, judging by the standing ovations that echoed in the summer scene, it will certainly not be the last. The two tenors and a baritone, with over two million records sold, 220 million streaming on digital platforms, as well as more than 500 million views and 1.5 million subscribers on the official YouTube channel, presented the songs to the public of Abbazia with which they achieved world fame, merged into the collection “The Best Of: 10 Years”, published in 2019. The disc collects about twenty of the most significant songs interpreted by the trio, from the famous compositions of Italian opera (such as “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”, contained in Giuseppe Verdi’s Traviata) to the greatest hits of popular music (including “Arrivederci Roma” by Renato Rascel and “Caruso” by Lucio Dalla), not forgetting international hits (such as “Be My Love” by Italian-American singer Mario Lanza).

But there is only time to go to sleep satisfied and then leave immediately from Bulgaria, because tonight 6 July there will be a concert in Plovdiv.

Stupendous!

People welcomed them with great enthusiasm and they gave their best.

There are many videos that show us the concert, in a beautiful setting, with many happy people who are there to hear and admire Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca.

Have fun watching them all.

Here is an article in the press from Bulgaria, very nice indeed and that I translated for you.

IL VOLO on the Plovdiv stage

With a vision of pop stars and divine voices, baritone Gianluca Ginoble and tenors Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone captivated the audience in Plovdiv. The long-awaited concert, postponed for a year due to the pandemic and the closing of the music stages, filled the stands of the Ancient Theater and raised the music lovers to their feet with the second song from the repertoire of the eternal classics.

The Italian trio “Il Volo” came to Bulgaria to celebrate their 10th anniversary on stage and made sure that even without a cake and candles the audience under the hills felt special. Maybe because of the fact that they were here for the third time, but only now they had the opportunity to appear on the stage of the Ancient Theater – the place where their art really sounds magical.

The visit of the trio was part of their world tour, but it will certainly remain in their hearts as one of the warmest and most exciting experiences.

The program of the three performers was more than influential and recognizable – “Nessun Dorma” by Puccini’s “Turandot”, the eternal “Un Amore Così Grande” and “O Sole Mio”, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” by Verdi’s “La Traviata”, “Grande Amore” – the song with which the boys won the audience of Eurovision in 2015 and she awarded them first place. They sang the song on encore. The boys bowed to the audience and took on their next challenge, promising to return with their new music program with lots of film music that would touch the hearts of their fans.

Another great success, but time is very short, IL VOLO is expected in Romania, so the next day, immediately departures for Bucharest, Romania.

In this video by Giampiero Grani, here are the border gates between Bulgaria and Romania and the bridge over the Danube.

In Romania, they will perform in the beautiful Arenele Romane open-air theater, built in 1906 according to the Roman model.

Il Volo is highly anticipated in Romania, because it is the first concert they have performed in this country.

The whole audience will have to demonstrate that they have been vaccinated, or have a negative swab performed within 24 hours, or they can take a quick test before entry.

The weather is excellent, so it promises to be a beautiful evening.

And here they are !!

A friend came to visit them backstage, Laura Bretan, remember, she was a finalist on America’s Got Talent and sang “Nessun Dorma” along with Il Volo.

Laura wrote:

“Got to sing with the faves tonight.💛 Y’all are amazing, Il Volo!”

And in fact they sang the beautiful CARUSO together. I don’t think it was a prepared thing, I think it was a last minute surprise, but a nice and welcome surprise.

Well, the only three concerts of 2021 in Eastern Europe have been made.

It is always a good show and always a good success to attend an Il Volo concert.

Now even this little parenthesis has passed, but the guys said they are preparing big surprises.

We look forward with joy!!

  1. Such a wonderful sight to see them back on tour and on stage!! All Il Volo fans will be ecstatic and won’t be able to wait our turn to have them sing to us!!!
    Welcome back, boys!!!

  2. What a pleasant surprise to find your email in my inbox today! Daniela and Pat, thank you so much for this timely detailed recap of our guys last three concerts of 2021. They sounded better than ever. Watching these videos and listening to their magnificent voices has heightened my anticipation for all the big surprises to come. Thank you both again for all you do to keep us informed. 🇮🇹♥️🎶

    1. You’re most welcome, Mary Jane. The guys did sound better than ever, if that’s even possible! 😁

    2. Mary Jane, think that in Romania it was their first concert ever, I think the Romanian fans were very happy and despite all the restrictions they were really numerous. And let’s not talk about Bulgaria, what a fantastic theater and how much love from the fans and what about Croatia, concert postponed three times !!!

  3. Not only better but even more handsome. I loved the Granada presentation with their shtick. Thank you once again for sharing

    1. Dolores, I honestly don’t know what he was looking at, maybe he recognized a fan, or he simply saw that his mother was sitting on that side, who accompanied him on this mini-tour.

      1. That could very well be the reason he had a slight smile on his beautiful face! Thanks, Daniela, for your input, very welcome as usual.

  4. Just an observation — When they were singing Arrivederci Roma at Plovdin ancient site, Gianluca seemed to be looking up into the audience on his right hand side for the longest time! Anything we should know???

  5. I have watched all the videos of those Eastern European concerts and they were wonderful. They completely charm audiences wherever they go. Those 3 cities were definitely under the Il Volo spell. Thanks for all the current information.

    1. I agree Janet, it is the effect that Il Volo has when you go to one of his concerts, and many of these fans, we had never seen them live and we always say that when you see and hear them live, you are bewitched.

  6. Great pictures! And thank for all the work you did on this.
I’m glad they have each other to deal with the delays. The Beatles said that they didn’t understand how Elvis managed on his own. He had backup singers but it’s not the same thing.

    1. Gail, the images are absolutely fantastic.
Yes, the three of them help each other a lot during concerts and sometimes, if one of them is not fit, one of the others sings his piece of song!

  7. Thank you God for giving us the gift of Daniela who in turn passes along the gift of her translations and detailed reviews of the IL VOLO concerts. The spectacular photos and videos of our three handsome men singing in Croatia-Bulgaria-Romania in the beautiful outdoor ancient theater are another gift making us feel present with the audience. Gianluca, Piero, Ignazio were so excited to be performing again and their happiness came across in their superb performance.
Welcome back, and I cannot wait for your return to America.

Thanks to everyone who provided the photos and videos.

    Sharing the love,

    Elisa Marie

    1. Mamma mia, Elisa Marie, that exaggerated. Thank you very much for the compliments.
The ancient theater of Plovdiv is really spectacular, I liked it a lot, it is a kind of style like Taormina and yes, Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio were enthusiastic to return to perform.

  8. Daniela, this has certainly been a lot of work for you to provide us with such a marvellous details article, and as always, you’ve done us proud!! I so appreciate all the little details, and the photos and videos are wonderful 😊 Thank you again for the update and for making me feel I was there !!

    1. Shirley, I’m glad you enjoyed the article, it was long, but there was so much good stuff to put in that I asked Pat to do a long post!

  9. Thank you Pat and Daniela for all the great photos and videos. They are better than ever and always look so elegant! It was a joy to see them doing what they do best and the audiences of course loved them.
Congratulations to Italy. It was a terrific game! I didn’t want to miss a minute.

    1. Margaret, Piero Ignazio and Gianluca were just beautiful and elegant, even if I didn’t like their different shoes! But it is always a joy to see them.

Thanks, we won, it was really hard !!!

  10. I too watched the whole soccer game and was happy Italy won, because I knew the boys would be elated !

Thank you again for the wonderful descriptions and videos of the three concerts. That’s a lot of work, but I am so thankful you’re doing that for us non-Italian fans. We really appreciate your translations and reports. Thank you again and again!

    1. Grazie Maija for your appreciation, always welcome.

The boys will have rejoiced a lot for Italy’s victory. In the Ginoble house, was also Ercoles’ birthday, double euphoria, the victory was a really nice gift for Ercole.

  11. My best friend is English and was hoping England would win, but she understood my wanting Italy to win the game (for our Il Volo boys). She knows what a keen fan I am of Il Volo. Would have loved to see their reaction, especially Gianluca and Igna who are soccer players.

    1. Dolores, it was natural for your English friend to side with England.
You know, I too would have liked to see Ignazio and Gianluca’s reaction. I think on the night of the second concert, they had the thought that Italy was playing the semifinal.

  12. I loved the looks on their faces when Laura Bretan sang with them. The guys have sung in many Greek theaters except one very important Theater, Herodus Atticus in Athens Greece. I hope they perform there soon. It would be a Notte Magica for sure. Also, March in New York can’t come soon enough for me.

    1. Rose Marie, what a magnificent theater, and besides, it would be the first time of Il Volo also in Greece, if I’m not mistaken. Unfortunately Taormina has been postponed again to 2022, so you will have to wait until March and you will see, it will arrive soon.

  13. I am never amazed at how well you write and describe all actions of “my guys” Daniella! I enjoyed the story from beginning to end, but you know I would. These guys are so special to me, can’t believe how much they do. I think it’s because they sing fabulously and their manners. They don’t show off, they give us pleasure and we laugh with them. I will always love them and what they sing. My favorite is still IL Mondo. As far as I know, I have all their CD’s and on a draining day and out of sorts, I put each CD in and play them once and sometimes twice. Good and tender hearted speaks oceans and mountains for “my guys”. Thank you for a well written story, fab pictures and as always a big hug to you because I see the care and love for them in your words. They in my opinion are a national trio of singing beautiful and meaningful songs to make us all HAPPY! Cheers, Love my guys, somethin about my guys! Jarckie R.

    1. Jackie, I would say that your recipe to spend the day with joy is perfect: insert one cd after another of Il Volo, because listening to Il Volo brings happiness. 🙂
      Thanks for the compliments.

  14. Thank you Daniela and Pat with so much to enjoy in this post with all the sights and sounds and especially the Romanian radio interview. I don’t get the white sneakers with an Armani suit, but at least they seem to have gotten past the “holes in the pants” phase, thankfully. Ignazio looks more healthy with the added weight, at least it looks to me that he has gained.

    1. Thank you for the videos Daniela, i played them over and over again.
As you know Daniela I was born in England, and also watched that soccer game. I was torn between the two countries, but if we had to lose I’m glad it was to Italy as I know the guys must have been thrilled.
As I was watching it, I realized they would be watching it too, I wish I could have sent them a message😁

      1. Ciao Jill, How are things from you, I have heard bad news.

Of course you were torn during the match, and I would have liked to see the reaction of our boys too. In reality there is a small video where we see Gianluca cheering after the goal that decreed the victory of Italy.
I hope you see it. Gianluca was watching the match in the square in Montepagano.

        https://www.facebook.com/judy.thurman1/videos/893504624847994

    2. Mark, I like white sneakers, but only if all three wear them, in this case, they had the same clothes and different shoes, I don’t like them. The fashion of jeans with holes is not over, but it would have been inappropriate to wear them in these concerts.

Did you also like the second part of the interview with Felicità?

  15. I’m always amazed with the energy, mechanics, staging, choreography, timing, and stage presence that it takes to put on a show such as they do.
I meant that I had not seen them in cameo interviews or pictures of late with the holes in their jeans and yes, I enjoyed the interview and always look forward to the next one. It’s like their own words are the icing on the cake of their overall talent package.

    1. In fact, Mark, the fashion of pants with holes is a bit outdated here too, thank goodness.
During the concerts of Il Volo, many people work, once I published a photo of the whole crew and there are so many.
Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca know very well that they must be grateful to these people.

      1. During the lock down I thought a lot about the stage crews and people necessary to moving artists around all over the world. They don’t get as much attention as they deserve when they are working.
I felt bad for them when they were not able to work.

      2. In fact, Gail, there was a need for a restart and now, we just have to hope that everything doesn’t stop again!
