Sanremo ended recently but as we have yet to see, Il Volo was once again treated badly.
This situation was monitored by Michele Monina, a music critic journalist, who is not part of the Sanremo press jury, but is widely listened to.
In the previous post I attached a video where Monina was having lunch with Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca and where he complimented them on the more pop turn that Il Volo is taking and complimented them a lot on their performance of Queen (I remind you that Monina loves rock more).
Well, the day after lunch Monina published LETTER 43 on the blog, a long consideration which I will now translate for you.

The exaggerated bullying against Il Volo, guilty only of knowing how to sing

You may like their music or not. But a new shitstorm has been unleashed on Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca by journalists, professionals and “left-wing” intelligentsia. Which really doesn’t forgive the trio for having a repertoire that looks to the past, exalting the Italian spirit even abroad. Now, among other things, an album of unreleased songs is also arriving. Leave these guys alone.
Nobody touches Il Volo. Yes maybe. It seems that the three boys are always the object of criticism from almost everyone, despite there being a constant tendency towards political correctness, towards creeping do-goodism which pushes most to put on pink unicorn glasses whenever someone bothers to criticize someone something else, perhaps even harshly. They, however, fall into a separate discussion, where no one talks about media pillorying, shitstorms, bullying. Many music journalists who crowded the Sanremo press room gave off a boorish show of booing when they finally saw them enter the top 10. Yet they hadn’t bothered to fail them in their report cards, even if we’re certainly not discussing the judgment of those who deal with music for work – or rather: for work they deal with music during the Holy Week of the Festival, one might say, given that then in the rest of the year many people talk and write about sewing or flowers and plants.
Moreover, let’s not forget, those of Volo on their previous passage to Sanremo had not only been met with boos but also stadium chants and dances, when instead of going on to win they had found themselves third, in 2019, after Mahmood and Ultimo. Despite this, the three had always remained impassive and professional, unlike their colleague from San Basilio. (refers to Ultimo who had instead responded in kind against the journalists)

The bizarre idea that reviving the Bel canto tradition is “right-wing”
In addition to the journalists, however, more or less well-known people also joined the chorus, there to mock the project of these three young singers who arrived at Sanremo 2024 to celebrate 15 years of their career. Criticisms came especially from the left, where evidently this bizarre idea persists that re-proposing the tradition of Bel canto is something attributable to the right: who knows what someone like Giovanna Marini thinks, who has sunk the roots of her work in tradition, and is certainly not never been pointed out as something other than itself. Returning to them: Piero Barone, born in 1993, Ignazio Boschetto, born in 1994 and Gianluca Ginoble, born in 1995, had met during the talent show Ti lascio una canzone, hosted by Antonella Clerici, and from there they set off to conquer the world, with the stage of the victory of Sanremo 2015, with Grande Amore, undoubtedly fundamental.
They bring music that is a hallmark of Italianness around the world
You may not like their music: it tends to look to the past, given that up to now they have never published an album of unreleased songs, preferring to direct their singing towards that vast and now consolidated repertoire which goes from Puccini to O sole mio, passing through Granada or Frank Sinatra classics. Personal tastes are all legitimate, let alone, but all that remains is to rage against three very young people who, until proven otherwise, not only are not doing anything wrong, but are actually continuing to bring around the world a music that is Italian figure, is something miserable, as well as extremely vile. Because launching criticism on social media, but also practicing a not too different form of bullying in the press, as if we were talking about something reprehensible, is an operation that leads to nothing interesting.
In the sense: it does not expand a judgment, especially if repeated by machine, it does not analyze or deepen a possible critical point of view; it becomes just a cutting comment, moreover given on those who are undoubtedly capable of singing, a fact which may well appear irrelevant, but which ultimately should be the basis of the profession of a singer.
In the trap era, those who know how to sing almost have to hide
Be careful, we are not here to contrast the three guys from Il Volo with those who use autotune or something like that – these are specious discussions that we will calmly leave to Luca Jurman I (music critic) and other wannabes – but rather to try to indicate how, precisely in a broad discussion that foresees the possibility of making music even for those who cannot play or sing (trap in this provides too many examples) escapes for what anomalous reason precisely those who know the basics of singing and practice them even with excellent results it should be vilified and attacked. It seems – God forgive us for the quote from General Vannacci – a world in reverse, where those who know how to do something that was once considered basic today almost have to hide, or keep the own secret art, because the world would go in another direction. Here too, excluding a priori that there could be multiple directions, given that music can be expressed with rigor and precision, as Il Volo evidently knows how to do and intends to continue to do, it seems that a sort of homologated single thought wants to decide the dish of the day, imposing the same dishes on everyone, to be honest, often quite bland.

And let’s say, let’s get to today, that Il Volo has been working for over a year on a project that intends to move the trio towards the contemporary, certainly not abandoning the world from which the boys come: they are not self-harming. In doing so they spent months and months in close contact with a team of authors, who on their three different voices – different in texture, colour, timbre, all fundamental characteristics in singing – wrote unpublished songs, soon to be on the market in what will be their first real album. An operation that they had already tested on the last tour, where in addition to performing together on their great classics, that is, on the great classics of the Italian Bel Canto tradition, they expressed themselves individually, distinguishing themselves and in some way characterizing themselves as individuals, all with that rigor we were talking about before, the same rigor they put into interviews, but also in making themselves available for selfies or autographs with their audience.
Political ideas stuck on the three boys
It’s sad to see them targeted, exactly in the same way that it was sad to see Geolier booed at the Ariston when he won the evening of duets: he is even younger (23 years old) and to take it out on those who are young, even more so if to do so he keeps that distance due to mobile phone or computer screens, is in effect comparable to bullying. Then, obviously, the criticism is there, even on the new, more pop turn of Il Volo, but the tones should at least be in the category of good taste, and if desired, also common sense. Because the writer is used to giving rise to even ferocious criticism, but always with irony and never going personal, while here the point seems to be precisely the three of them, Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca, and any form of patriotism confused for something halfway road between a Putinian nationalism and something that could, if desired, be attributable to the ideologies of the Brothers of Italy or the League (these are two Italian political parties)
Ideas stuck on guys who, until proven otherwise, shouldn’t have anything to do with kids (in the sense: maybe they think that way, but it’s not by singing classics or referring to that tradition that they intend to convey messages, and in any case doing so even when they try moving towards something else is wrong in its own right).
In the words of Anna Tatangelo, “when the person is nothing, the offense is zero”
However, if you feed the controversy to the masses who have the opportunity to act undisturbed on social media, you end up offering a sad spectacle that makes you uncomfortable. Every day we accuse others of incorrect attitudes, we defend the indefensible by brandishing like clubs the right not to fall into a shitstorm or be pilloried by the media, and then too often we end up being the creators of these incorrect behaviors.
All for the sole fault of being successful abroad, or maybe even just making music that we don’t like. It would be nice to be able to apply to them to the words of Francesco De Gregori (Italian singer) – who we imagine is appreciated by that segment of the intelligentsia who loves to mock them – paraphrasing the ending of the refrain of La leverage footballistica del ‘68: “The boys will also do if they have narrow shoulders.” But in reality, lucky them, it seems that Il Volo is made up of three bold young men who have already gained broad shoulders by performing on stages all over the world. So let’s opt for the more popular “cantate che vi passa”, because it is really true that the words should be calibrated on the mouth of the person who pronounces them, or to put it with the divine Anna Tatangelo, (Italian singer) “when the person is nothing the offense is zero.”
What can I say, he really “pulled the ear” of his fellow journalists, but let me explain a little about who Monina is.
Let me start by saying that Monina, at the beginning of 2015 but in particular in 2016, was a great detractor of Il Volo, writing very unflattering articles about them.
Then Il Volo presented itself again in Sanremo in 2019 and even then Monina was not accredited in the press room but, like this year, interviewed the singers separately but always within Sanremo.
So it was that in 2019 Monina met Piero, Ignazio and GIanluca for an interview that lasted a long time and in which our boys spoke heart-to-heart with Monina, describing the difficulties they encountered, talking about their musical studies and performing a strong musical culture, in particular from Gianluca, Monina also noting that they were polite people, they were not at all unpleasant or arrogant, and therefore Monina had a very good impression of Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, so much so that from then on he changed his opinion.
Since then Monina has had the opportunity to write little about Il Volo, but shortly before Sanremo this year he mentioned them in a short article where he warned his colleagues journalists not to make that stupid and rude scene in the press room of 2019, but that if they had something to say to them, to have the courage to say it to their faces.
Now, this new long article seemed to me to be truly heartfelt in defense of Il Volo and I dare say that it is the only voice that has been raised in defense of Il Volo, because believe me, some journalists even in their lists of the various singers in Sanremo, they don’t even mention Il Volo, as if they hadn’t been part of the festival, so much so that I thought they were “the unnamed”.
As you understood by reading, Monina also tries to give a political explanation.
Honestly, I have never thought about this, also because music must be above political ideas, but if Monina writes this, there has certainly been some stance taken by journalists with certain political ideas.
Even more so, I am increasingly of the opinion that journalists should not vote in Sanremo.

I would like to respond publicly to the many questions I have received privately regarding the article published by Michele Monina. I will try to be impartial, without being “too” biased. (she loves Il Volo)
I won’t talk about politics and this is the important assumption from which I would like to start and I don’t think the political orientation of my colleague is even important. I found your article on bullying, because that’s what it’s about, courageous and also honest. Only fools do not change their minds and, net of past judgments – or worse – prejudices, it seems to me to be a lucid confession from someone who has known the artists and evaluated their technical skills, experience and education.
The conversion, if we want to call it that, must have started from the face-to-face meeting during a lunch at Il Villaggio Del Festival.
A chat beyond the permitted television times which allowed Monina and Il Volo to make a quick analysis of the current recording situation. It was agreed that music is hitting rock bottom, in terms of production, a slave to autotune, up-tempo and catchphrases. It’s no longer the time for songs and reasoned lyrics, but that’s fine too, after all, the market creates the logic of the market and in the end we end up singing songs that are all the same and – maybe we like them? – and we risk forgetting after a few months. Could educating about musical culture make a difference, since many young people don’t know who Prince is and don’t even know Michael Jackson? This is Gianluca’s proposal, but it is also another story and it is not yet the historical moment to address it. In the meantime, I would enjoy the opinion of an expert who has addressed an uncomfortable topic that is still talked about too little.
On Antonella Esposito’s page it was possible to comment and so I did and here is my comment:
I fully agree with what you pointed out and, as you wrote, Monina’s article was certainly courageous, but this is the intelligence of people who, if at first they had a wrong vision, do not continue to follow the herd, but they evaluate with their own knowledge the topic they write about, in this case Il Volo. In recent days I have read assessments and comments that go beyond criticism but are only designed to offend and this is ridiculous but also a sign of great degradation and rudeness, shame on some people.
Patrizia Ciava, who we know well here, also published Monina’s article on her page, with this comment:
“All-out defense of Il Volo by Monina who once called them “bimbiminchia” (a word that means childish and with a limited quotient), struck on the road to Sanremo, thanks to the fateful meeting with the boys in 2019. 😉 (She means that the 2019 meeting struck Monina, like a miracle, and made him change his mind about Il Volo)
Also in this case you could comment and my comment was this:
“And thank goodness there are those who have the courage to admit they were wrong.”
And do you remember Sunday, when Il Volo was a guest at Mara Venier and there were also journalists who couldn’t ask any questions?
At the end of the Il Volo moment, Ignazio said to journalists: “Singers sing, not scream.”
Some newspapers picked up on this moment saying that Ignazio had said this against Lino Banfi, an elderly actor who was sitting near the journalists, but it’s not true!!!! He was referring to Andrea Laffranchi, a journalist who always writes very badly about Il Volo, in fact here is his report card from Sanremo and you will understand why Ignazio said so.

Il Volo or sung scream? They may have many fans in the world, but we take ourselves out of the club.
Maybe I bored you with this long post, but it was right that you too, on the other side of the ocean, knew exactly how the situation is here and how the press behaves towards Il Volo.
So you might think, but then why did Il Volo participate in Sanremo with these conditions?
As I told you, there was great courage on their part, but the media exposure that Sanremo offers is priceless and I believe that their victory was to reach an audience that otherwise would not have listened to them. Under the video of WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER there are many comments from young Italian males (before there were very few and only to insult) who have changed their minds about them, I’ll transcribe some of them:

The absurd thing is that this cover will probably go around the world, especially in the UK and USA, but here in Italy they didn’t even reach the Top 5. The same goes for Santi Francesi who brought a legend like Skin to Sanremo and they too out of the Top 5. Now Italians want ballet music on TikTok, and covers like these are “boring” in their words.

I’m a rock “fanatic” and Volo isn’t my thing…usually, but the combination of Vasco’s legendary guitarist and their sublime voices made me want to film it. Touching sacred monsters like Queen and doing the song badly would have been a crime…instead you honored the song. Well done, I will buy your first album of unreleased songs. Damn, what rumors.

I’m not a fan of theirs but this performance was incredible. Breathtaking. Burns perfect solos and with the usual taste and style. The boys sang like a god and “with intention”, reaching all the difficult notes.

Hi. I just do not understand why the journnalists do not appreciate Il Volo. What do they like if not first class vocals and music? And why is a music festival’s outcome decided by a third of votes from journalists? Why aren’t the radio listeners and CD buyers and TV audience and Ariston audience the ones who decide? Sounds to me like San Remo needs to be reworked, or avoided by class acts like Il Volo. To be honest, I did not care for the song the winner performed, and I plan to hear them all to make my final determination as to the best act. Yes, I love Il Volo, but I am a student of music and can discern good from bad. My best to our fine young men, and I cannot wait for the new album to drop. Any idea of when that will be? Unfortunately the voting system needs to be revised, but believe me it has been done several times over the years, because there is always a way to get around the system and the right compromise needs to be found. Even the radio voting system is not good, because here in Italy Il Volo, for example, is never broadcast on the radio and therefore those who only listen to the radio don’t even know them. Televoting was certainly forced this year, because so many of us couldn’t get on the line and it’s impossible that all the people who voted for Geolier always got on the line???? Something didn’t work or was rigged. I would leave the televoting and also the radio jury, but I would abolish the press room jury and insert a qualitative jury of people in the musical field who evaluate the voices, the intonation, the harmony, the intonation, thus to the vote “of belly” would be joined by a “head” vote.

Cant understand why the journalists are allowed to vote when it’s common knowledge they don’t like il volo and are very biased against them. These young men are very very good singers and the journalists should be proud of them for taking their songs and Italy around the world

Our press is not interested in bel canto songs, on the contrary they write that they give a distorted vision of our country.

I agree with Kirsten, the publication of Monina’s article was an act of courage, he got to know the boys and realized that they are not at all like his colleagues have always described them.
Of course, he is not afraid of antagonizing people, he is an authoritative voice, who knows about music, even if he appreciates rock more.

If coming to America to sing pop music, they need to lose the Armania look, even Armani relaxed. Def not the pop look.
What will happen to Piero’s gorgeous operatic voice? Will it be “toned down”? That would be a trajedy.

He will always have a fundamental role, as will the other two, and in the concerts we will hear many beautiful operatic romances, I’m sure.
I hope not, his is the voice that really drew me to them the first time I heard them sing Il Mondo.
I am so mad at the way il Volo was treated. These idiot media prefer. Fake singing and gimmicks. Over true talent if three pure voices with no tricks. Wow! The world is becoming a very ugly place. Just this morning a friend and I were talking about how social media has give everyone the right to say whatever they want to say without considering how the other person will feel. I applaud Il Volo (and not because I love them) for performing against all odds. If Italians don’t like them, then maybe Il Volo can come to America or to South America, where they are well loved and applauded.
Where has our compassion gone, since when does anyone have the right to criticize goodness. They are three young men who have worked very hard to make this world a more pleasant place.
Journalists who haven’t studied music or judge singers once a year should not be the main voters. Only the people should vote (American Idol here in America has only people voting for who will win).

Thank you Daniela for the translations. First I want to thank you and Pat for all the time you put into the coverage of the festival. It did not turn out as we had hoped (not even close) but you have kept us up with all the good and the bad. Without you we would have missed alot. I feel with these journalists the greater fame and adoration with the sold out concerts Il Volo recieves the more enraged they become. It makes them look really stupid. You will never change their minds. Luckily there are a few like Michele Monica who are open enough to change their opinion. I believe the best way we can make these journalists miserable is to keep selling out their concerts, buying their cds, and supporting them in any way we can. Il Volo will be like the singers of what we call the ‘golden oldies’ from many years ago. We still remember the words to their songs and sing them. I completely agree with what you wrote, Cathy, many Sanremo singers will not last long, “meteors”, while Il Volo has said in every interview that they have had a career of 15 years and that they intend to continue united, so their voices will cheer us up for a long time !!
It didn’t take fans long to start singing Capolavoro. They were also singing Grande Amore at the tops of their lungs too.
From what I have seen there seemed a lot of camaraderie between the performers.

I am stunned at the vicious reception the guys have received. It’s like a punch in the gut. I think you are right Daniela, there’s something rotten going on behind the scenes. Michele Monica was brave and maybe more will join in, but I doubt it.

Yes Mira, often those who are challenged are then welcome. A great step forward has already been made by the Italian people who now understand that they have been piloted and used by journalists.
My thanks as always Daniela and Pat. I am not going to comment too much on the bullying aspect, other than to say that is all the average journalist has any talent for. If one can call it a talent of course! The least said about them the better, I wouldn’t give them the time of day.
I came somewhat late in the day to hearing Il Volo for the first time, and that was a total fluke. I have to say at this point I didn’t see them at the Eurovision as I haven’t watched in years.
My first experience of them was Il Mondo, obviously a very early recording of them in a studio. From then on I set out to find out what other songs were on Facebook, but mostly on YouTube. I was smitten from then on. I have always been keen on opera, mostly the lightweight stuff, ditto classical music.
Yes there has been pop stuff as well, including Queen. Maybe that is why Il Volo struck such a chord with me, they are capable of everything. I bet if they did Rap (heaven forbid) I would like that too, and not just because I am biased, which I freely admit to being! 🙂
As for them not being popular in Italy. From what I have seen and heard their concerts are sellouts. We aren’t talking about four/five hundred seater theatres either, we are talking huge stadiums.
The first CD I bought was the tenth anniversary album. I actually bought it three times. I sent one to a friend of mine in Australia, mainly because as a singer I wanted her comments. The second one I kept for myself, then I discovered I could buy one with the Live In Matera DVD, so my original copy went to join Il Divo at the other side of Barnsley. Christine was so taken with Il Volo I think she has just about forgotten Il Divo. 😉
I do so wish they would come to the UK. I would happily pay for a front seat ticket, not only for me, but for Christine as well. I would also pay for a subscription for the fan club for her so she could go the the soundcheck.

I’ve always said that their voices are “captivating” and addictive. When you meet them you start looking for everything, every video that talks about them, you can’t help it.
People love them very much here too, not only in their concerts, but also in their television appearances which always have the “peak ratings”. And I think the final comments I made at the end of the article speak for themselves.

I really appreciate your translating this lengthy, intelligent and biting article, Daniela. Unfortunately, the music scene in the U.S. is very much the same. But although Italian press and radio have been such jerks about the guys, it seems to me that Italian TV has been very good to them, thank heavens! And now another night added to Verona due to the sellout. Take that, Sanremo journalists and radio!
It’s true Judi, television has been benevolent, but we’re not talking about national television, unfortunately, here there are journalists who snub them. Instead they were much appreciated by Canale5. And this year 4 concerts at the Arena, good for the journalists!!
Thanks ladies for a great job of putting this massive blog together for us. Bravo to Michele for admitting that he was wrong about the guys. I watched the guys on Mara’s show and the cowardly journalists just sat there with scowls on their faces, it was awful but our guys did a beautiful thing and sang their hearts out. They are strong, brave and united, they know they are the best of the best, but it still must be diffucult to deal with. It broke my heart in the previous appearances, but because I knew what was coming this time, the hurt was even more heartbreaking. “Journalist” of this caliber should be removed from the judging process by those who run the competition!!!

I am prejudiced, of course, because I think they are absolutely brilliant artists but in my opinion they outclassed every other act at San Remo. It must be daunting knowing they are going to boo and be prejudiced against you and very deflating but they seem to rise above it as best they can. It has happened in the UK and USA to other artists. They will prove that it will not change their popularity.
Jacqueline, I sincerely hope that people do not let themselves be influenced by these journalists, but we are always talking about mature people, unfortunately our young people are influenced by what the radio broadcasts and what is praised to them as “beautiful”. In a well-known TV talent show, the message is being passed that you can always sing with ‘autotune, because being in tune is no longer necessary. In this way the kids think that everyone can be a singer and that studying is of no use at all.

All of us are responsible for making this world a great place, those who bullied our boys have a dilemma of being human. However, let us not fall into the entitlement trap of feeling we are the victim because we are not, let us go over it because even if we break a sweat to defend our fantastic boys, Il Volo will be fine because their materials are good. Right now, these young men are still exploring, and growing and will have many more opportunities ahead of them. And yes, the controlling justice is wearing us down as Il Volo spread their independent wings, but they are continuously loving us and increasing their capacity and liberation that humanity still exists in their brave heart. Il Volo will not fall down which will create permanent damage to them. But for how long will Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca still have to be bullied? It’s been 9 years since their first Sanremo and 5 since the last, so nothing has changed yet????
Let us not get emotional Dani, let us keep our emotions under control, and use humor instead to deflect their insults, we don’t care isn’t it? If these bullies, especially those journalists don’t get the reactions they want, they’ll probably move on to something else. The journalist’s point of view is freedom without moral responsibilities, they can say whatever they like to say, thus we don’t have any control and they will not change for us. These people often enjoy upsetting Il Volo’s supporters so we need to ignore them as much as possible, they are just nobody. Tell our guys to take Martial Arts Classes! Can I just comment that the Beatles in the UK the same problem, also the Rolling Stones. Elvis Presley was banned from US television. They all survived to become worldwide stars as are Il Volo. I think the music business in itself is cultthroat and nasty, I have a son who after college went on the road for 15 years…back and forth across the country playing his guitar and singing. He finally woke up and started a music business that puts him more on the business side to help young musicians. It isn’t too much different in the US except the brutality of the remarks from the Italian press that puts them way over in the top in bullying….just no need to treat young people like that…especially those with God given talent and personalities of angels!
I enjoyed the writing of Monina and Michele conversation with boys over lunch….they helped to lighten things for us as fans and I’m sure really made the guys feel better.
I don’t know who runs these Festivals but someone needs to knock some sense into them, I find it hard to believe they’ve let this go on for far too long!
EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE TREATED FAIRLY, EVEN LESS TALENTED ONES! ILVOLO is the cream of crop, top of the heap…..THE BEST!! I pray for their health and safety every night and during San Remo for fair treatment…..that’s all we can expect. Carol, I really don’t know what the problem of the Italian press is against Il Volo, but it is certainly not acceptable for rude tones and words to be used against anyone and especially even less against talented and polite boys like Piero Ignazio and Gianluca.
It’s me again… just a couple comments! Our ex First Lady, Michelle Obama had the comment I’ve love….” When they low, we go high”….thats our boys…so proud of them!
Also for Christians in world this is LENT, the best action we can make is to be kind, peaceful, caring and loving….more “CHRIST LIKE!” But that is open to everyone not just Christians….possibly the problem with the press is they’ve lost their faith? What ever that may be! Humm?😳
Thank you for keeping us informed about Il Volo, the good, the bad and the ugly. It hurts to read the nasty comments of journalists, but I know the guys will rise above it. It is trendy to be “modern” and condemn anything traditional and these so called journalists are perfect examples of that.
I admire the boys’ strength, confidence, and conviction that bel canto is beautiful and worthy of exposing the rest of the world to it. The world seems to love it, too, and Il Volo has become the best advertisement for Italy, the best ambassadors of their country. They are proud to be Italian and love Italian traditions, and besides, their God-given voices are perfect for bel canto. But they certainly aren’t old fashioned, they also keep up with the world of modern music, too. I’m looking forward to their new album, and I’m sure it will be perfect!

But many people today still cannot see beyond the wrong image of them as presumptuous and rude boys. The press has sown very badly and people don’t know how to judge with their eyes and ears.

Thank you Daniela for another article well done. I feel badly for IlVolo. I am a huge fan who appreciates their talent, music and professionalism. And, I applaud them for staying strong and holding their heads up high despite all the criticism and negativity. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but these journalists have gone way too far………I wonder who they’ll go after next! I will definitely be getting IlVolo’s album when it’s released as well as attend one of their concerts when they are on another North American tour.

I agree Ann, Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca deserve a prize even just for having always remained united and also for having presented themselves again in Sanremo. Unfortunately now in the charts, not only the actual sales of the records count, but also the streaming listens and in that, we fans of Il Volo are not very present and therefore the charts work against them.

Hallo Daniela, erstmal tausend Dank für deine Informationen und Übersetzungen. Ich bin Deutsche und habe zum ersten Mal die Gruppe im Fernsehen gesehen, als ihr Weihnachtskonzert am 15.12.23 bei uns gesendet wurde. Es war Zufall, als ich auf dem Programm gelandet bin. Das erste Bild, das ich sah, war Jeanluca. Er sang ein lateinisches Lied. Mir blieb in dem Moment der Atem weg. Ich wusste gar nicht, was geschah. Noch nie habe ich eine derartige Verbindung zwischen der Schönheit eines Menschen, der Stimme, dem Gesang und Ausstrahlung gesehen. Dann wechselte die Kamera auf Piero oder Ignazio, das weiß ich nicht mehr. Ich konnte mich nicht abwenden. So etwas Schönes und Einmaliges habe ich noch nie erlebt. Von diesem Tag, dem 15.12.23, ist bis heute kein Tag vergangen, an dem ich nicht immer was Neues von den Dreien gesehen habe. Ich habe vermutlich alles jetzt gesehen, was es auf Youtube, Intergram und Google zu finden gab. Leider kann ich die meisten Interviews nicht verstehen, weil sie überwiegend nur auf italienisch zu hören sind. Ich habe vor langer Zeit mal ein paar Jahre Italienisch an der Volkshochschule gelernt, aber sehr viel vergessen. Außerdem sprechen die Jungens so schnell, dass ich höchstens Piero ein bisschen verstehe. In ihren Konzerten von vor 10 Jahren oder länger waren sie noch anders als heute. Natürlich. Sie sangen mit einer Frische und Leichtigkeit, noch nicht sehr professionell. Man sah ihnen die Freude an. Ich habe Angst, dass sie jetzt so erwachsen und gereift sind, dass sie eigenen Wege suchen. Ich möchte ihnen vertrauen, wenn sie sagen, dass sie zusammenbleiben, aber jeder Einzelne seinen Stil und sein Aussehen behalten kann.
Ich bin so glücklich, dass ich das noch erleben darf.

How else do they think these talented three are celebrating 15 years of making music together. Yes, unfortunately this is the Alberta situation, journalists have always boycotted Il Volo from the beginning and have always presented them to the public as haughty and not at all humble, so that many people immediately took a dislike to them. Now I have to tell you that many people have changed their minds and now they are much loved here in Italy too, but especially by the more mature generations, for our very young people to declare that they follow Il Volo means following “old” things. But I hope that despite the aversion of journalists, at this Sanremo Il Volo has managed to make themselves better known and if the radios play their songs, they will have achieved their goal.

Sanremo served a purpose for the guys. They won! Forget the press room, the guys made folks who don’t ordinarily listen to/like Il Volo left positive comments. In my world that’s a win. The press will continue to think of themselves as “better than” everyone else while ignoring real flesh and blood talented singers who are from their own country. It’s 2:30 am and I can’t think of an appropriate metaphor for how ridiculous the press is behaving, but they kind of remind me of my 3 year old great grandson.
Yes, Muriel, I think they were right in this, many people who didn’t follow them at all, now after their performance, especially on the cover night, are intrigued and have listened to their beautiful voices.
Szkoda ,że Włosi nie doceniają Il Volo, są fantastyczni, niezwykle utalentowani . Ceniłam San Remo, ale to nie jest w porządku, że zwycięzcy nie wybiera publiczność, krytycy, dziennikarze mogą zabierać głos, ale nie powinni decydować o zwycięstwie…Obserwuję jak bardzo są stronniczy, zazdrośni? talent i piękno wykonania utworów przez Piero, Ignazia i Giana , nie ma sobie równych….mam nadzieję , że złe komentarze i hejt nie zniszczą im humorów, życia i kariery.

I agree with you regarding the Sanremo juries, I would definitively eliminate the jury of journalists, I would leave the radio ones and the televoting, but then I would add a quality jury made up of expert people (orchestral players, vocal coaches) who also evaluate the performances, tonality, intonation, harmony, etc.
Im so sorry about the bullying of course, but don’t you or our guys forget that bullies aren’t the good part of society or the music world. We all must concentrate on the the positive, which is of course the majority of the IlVolo fan world. They are adored all over the world, and that counts for much in their live.

Yes Jill, our contribution will be to purchase the CD and increase sales, so that Piro Ignazio and Gianluca will understand how much love there is for them. Unfortunately today streaming is valid and in those we Il Volo fans are far behind.
