A MEETING IN MILAN by Daniela

I met Milagros Costabel!

She is truly a special and charismatic young woman, full of energy and good humor.
Our meeting took place in Milan in March, a day full of clouds and rain.
But before starting my story of the meeting, I want to take a few steps back, to 2021 when Milagros sent an email to Flight Crew and Jana, our administrator, forwarded it to me.
She had written a beautiful letter that I then immediately published on Flight Crew, where she told us how she had become a fan of Il Volo and what their music had meant to her.
For those who have not read that post, I will report it here.
https://ilvoloflightcrw.com/2021/01/28/il-volo-milagros-harvard-by-daniela/
So Milagros got into Harvard, very impressive, kudos to her.

But let’s get to the present day.

About a month ago, towards the end of February, Milagros sent another email to Flight Crew for me, here’s what she wrote:
“Hi there! I hope you are well and excited for Il Volo’s US tour!
I don’t think you’ll remember me—I only talk to Jana regularly—but a while ago, 3 years ago I think, I wrote to you to tell you my story with Il Volo, how listening to one of their songs inspired me to try to change my life and I ended up leaving Uruguay, my home country, and getting into Harvard on a full scholarship. Time flies…and I’m about to graduate! (writing this seems a bit crazy to me)
I’ve done a lot of things over the years; I traveled to 14 countries with my guide dog, giving talks around the world, advocating for disability at the United Nations in New York… and obviously well, now
I’m about to graduate and the truth is I feel that none of this would have happened if not for that second of inspiration at a time that – no joke – was one of the darkest of my life.
I decided to buy a ticket to go and see them in Boston as a graduation present for myself…and the meet and greet! I saved for years for this so I’m very excited but obviously I’m also nervous because I’m afraid that everything will go wrong, that it will only be 5 seconds, a photo and that’s it… and well, as I’m blind at the end of the day the photo doesn’t matter so much to me, I kind of feel like I’m coming full circle and thanking all the things that brought me here today and this is my way of doing it with them even though of course they would not care at all.
I just wanted to write to  share this with you all- I continue to read the site very often, I love it because you always post translations of the interviews and since I can’t see subtitles it’s very useful to me! Thank you for everything you do.
Best,
Mili.”
I immediately got in touch with Mili and she told me that she was thinking of coming to Italy for about ten days before the Boston concert and exactly that she was thinking of coming to Milan. What a nice surprise, Milan is an hour away by train from Brescia and so we agreed to meet in person in Milan, truly an unmissable opportunity!
So on the afternoon of Saturday, March 15, my husband and I took the train to Milan, we had agreed to meet in Piazza Duomo and exactly in front of a toy store.
Unfortunately the weather, which a week before had been splendid and warm, from the day before the meeting had become cold and rainy, but it didn’t matter.
Then there was the problem of the language, Milagros speaks Spanish and English, I speak Italian and a little English, but even that wasn’t an obstacle.
After a few minutes of visual search, the Piazza Duomo, despite the weather, was full of people, we knew that Mili had her trusty guide dog Indio with her, and finally I saw her, she was right on the other side of the intersection.
After greetings, we immediately felt in tune, she is truly a sunny girl, always smiling.
I thought that someone would accompany her to Piazza Duomo, but no, she was alone with her dog and she confided in me that she always travels alone with Indio. This was her first time in Italy and she came to Milan which is a chaotic city due to traffic and the amount of people.
While we were walking around Piazza Duomo she told me that she will graduate in May, and the gift she gave herself for her graduation was precisely the Il Volo concert.
She told me about her constant travels, she has been to 14 countries, to give conferences on disabilities, in fact I think that maybe Italy was the 15th country she visited.
As we crossed Piazza Duomo on our way to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II she told me that the night before she had been to Navigli, a characteristic place in Milan, full of lively youth life during the evenings, in short certainly not a calm place and she liked it a lot. This place, Navigli, was also featured in the video of Il Volo di Musica Che Resta.
So, chatting pleasantly, we crossed the Gallery and I even had her step on the famous “bull’s balls” to wish her luck.
Milagros is on Facebook and Instagram and if you Google: MILAGROS COSTABEL, you will see how many interviews she has given to prestigious newspapers that have covered her and her lifestyle, such as: BBC, CNN, IL Corriere della Sera, El Observador, Model View Culture etc.
And so we arrived on the other side of the Galleria to take a picture in front of the Teatro La Scala.
Milagros immediately spoke of Piero about his dream of singing an entire opera, perhaps at La Scala!
I think I also understood that her favorite of the three is Piero!
We would have walked to the Castello di Milano if the weather had been more stable, but instead we walked back through the Galleria and then went to a coffee bar and sat down to talk comfortably.
Mili told us about her family, about her mother who had called her the night before worried to know what country she was in. As a mother I understand these worries very well, but I must say that Milagros gave me the feeling of being a very strong and self-confident young woman.
She told me that she was born really small, only 750 grams (1.65 lbs.) and they had to give her oxygen which however took away her sight, so at two and a half months she was already blind.
Her family currently consists of her father, mother, her and a 14-year-old brother.
While we sipped our hot chocolate with cream, she told me that she saved up to be able to buy the ticket for the Il Volo concert in Boston and also the Meet & Greet, but everyone told her that the time at the M&G is very short while her, instead, would like to ask them questions and maybe write about this experience.
Of course we at Flight Crew have passed Mili’s story forward, so that the guys would know about it. Who knows if she will get a few minutes of Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio at her disposal, we will know soon because the Boston concert is coming up.
Of course, we at Flight Crew are waiting for the review of the concert dear Milagros and the impression that our dear guys made on you.
The afternoon hours passed very pleasantly and we returned home, bidding a fond farewell to Milagros.
For my part I must say that I met a very determined young woman, not at all intimidated by life’s events, a strong and courageous woman who will soon graduate.
Let’s cross our fingers that her dream of being able to speak with Il Volo can come true, we wish it with all our hearts Milagros, on the other hand, as the meaning of your name shows, miracles always happen.
A big hug from me and my husband, proud to have made your acquaintance, and of course from all Flight Crew!! ❤️
Daniela  🤗❤️

  1. Such a beautiful story, Daniella, I believe if
Il Volo knows about her. They will make it a point to talk with her. I saw them in person for the second time in Clearwater Florida in
March. They are very kind and caring young men. Thank you for your emails and your wonderful stories about them.

    1. Thanks for the nice compliments Brenda, I’m glad you like what we publish. I also hope that Il Volo has some time to dedicate to Milagros.

      1. Hi Daniela
Not sure where to email you so hope it’s ok to put here.

All your stories and interviews are all very interesting.
I was reading the one of Michele Torpedine, his life and how he put the lovely boys together as Il Volo.

I just wanted to pick up on that he said he doesn’t trust a lot of women as he has had a bad experience and that most are are in so many words materialistic and thinks they would cheat, so this has put him off having a relationship.
I really wish I could meet him as this isn’t always so.
My Grandfather and Father were tailors, we didn’t have much, I was married for over 30 years until my husband passed away just 2 years ago I cared and looked after him, and I have never been after money or cheated. I just think it’s about a good heart and kindness, and love.
It’s such an shame and I know his life is music and of course Il Volo but not to be able to share with someone it’s sad.
He just hasn’t met the right person.
And I’m sure he is a lovely man but has the wrong idea.
Just wanted to express my thoughts hope that’s ok.
I love Il Volo and do follow them and hope to see their concert one day.
They have all managed to find love.
        Thank you
        Fenella

    Love from Ebba in Norway

    1. Ebba, I read from Norway, you are really volo-fans scattered all over the world!
I confirm that Milagros is just like that, strong and determined, an admirable woman.

  3. Beautiful story, Daniela!! So glad you were able to connect. I know she was concerned on the language issue, but I told her she would be fine!

    1. Thanks Jana, it was a lovely afternoon, Mili is a superwoman, she told me a lot about you too.

  4. What a great article Daniela with Millie . I’m glad she will be getting her diploma from Harvard and her trip to see Il volo in Boston . Good for her. And I hope she meets the boys. What a beautiful dream to come true.
    Linda

    1. Yes Linda, all Flight Crew is rooting for her.
Boston is getting closer and soon we will have Mili’s review!!

  5. How lovely of you to meet up with Milagros Daniela. Thank you for telling us all about this courageous young lady. I do hope she gets to meet and chat with the boys. June x

    1. June, I couldn’t miss this opportunity to meet you personally and it was truly a pleasure.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Mili’s meeting with Il Volo.

  6. What an inspiring story Daniela. Thank you for sharing. She has achieved more than many of us who are sighted have done. Piero, Igna and Gianluca are so kind I am sure they will agree to chat with her if they receive the news. Happy spring to you and your family.

    1. Thanks Janet, Milagros’s is a fan story that is nice to know.
I wonder if Il Volo is aware of the effect that their music has on people.
      Happy spring to you too!

  7. Wow what a heartfelt and tremendous story Thank you.
Your words mean so much to us
Thank you doesn’t begin to express what this means to all of us who appreciate you and Il Volo
    Most Sincerely,
    Mary G. Dwork

    1. Wow Mary, thank you for the kind words of appreciation, but I do nothing but report or translate what I read or hear.
Of course when I read something interesting I immediately think of you and the pleasure of making you participants of what stimulated me too.
      Thanks again for the compliments.

  8. Daniela, that was such a sweet story about a beautiful spirit who regardless of no having sight she travels the world and is graduating from Harvard! I’m 81 and have traveled many places with my husband but now that he’s no longer here I’m too timid to do it on my own, Mili’s courage is amazing! I don’t think there’s any worry about those three with such big hearts, they will of course spend time to talk with her….willingly! Lucky girl, I’m sure it was a night she’ll remember and cherish for many years. Of course they have played Boston already or will this week, Saturday was RCMH in NYC!
As always a great job, your heart always shines through!
Love and thanks to both you and Pat , Carol ❤️😘🤗🎼🎤🎶🎵😉

    1. Carol, I understand very well what you say, I myself did not go to Milan alone, even though it is only an hour by train, I am used to going everywhere with my husband and at first he is always a little reluctant because he feels “a fish out of water” but then he is always very happy to have come, and this time it was the same, he was very happy to have met a person like Milagros!

  9. Daniela.
Thank you for keeping us informed on Mila. I agree with the others, the guys would take the time if they know the story behind her being there to meet them. I for one, think she is a strong, courageous person to accomplish her goals. When I was young, I did some traveling in the USA by myself and with others, but to travel to other countries by myself- not me. God continue to bless her life and watch over her.

    1. Barb, I can only tell you that I’m sure our kids are aware of Mili’s story, so I have high hopes that they’ll be able to find a few minutes for her.

  10. Thank you, Daniela, for presenting Milli’s story to us. We all have had the planning, logistics and expectations of our first Il Volo concert, but with Milli its times 10! There is a special light around her quest. A “magical energy” that she has experienced since birth. The reward of her graduation gift to herself is a beautiful victory. The music of Il Volo in concert
feeds the soul as she will feel in Boston soon. God Bless You
    Millie.
Daniela, thanks for getting this to the guys ahead of time.
    So thoughtful.

    1. Thank you Martha, I am sure that Mili, reading all these beautiful comments of yours, will be even more spurred and encouraged, even if as I have already said she is a very determined woman.
Let’s hope that she succeeds in her intent and in addition to enjoying a beautiful concert she can also ask her questions.

  11. Awww what a beautiful story and what an amazing young lady. Thanks Daniela and Flightcrew team for taking action here and supporting Milli in getting her deepest wish come true. I so much hope – and cross my fingers – that she will succeed. If anyone deserves it, she does. She demonstrates such a unique strength – making me ashamed of my mourning at my own struggles so small next to hers… I applaud her.

“Il Volo” may as such not have changed my life in the full sense of the words – but in similarity with many of you in this group – their music, beautiful voices and not the least their wonderful personalities have likewise had an impact on my life. They represent an era that seems to be disappearing in our chaotic present world – hanging on to the finest values in life such as strong family ties, good manners, respect for each other and other people, modesty and love – and conveying it to us way across the edge of the stage by means of their voices and interpretations and in their doings. And they hit us right in the heart. This is so difficult to explain – if at all it can be put into words.. but I am sure you all know what I mean. They are role models proving that doing good is still worth the while.

And indirectly they give us a lot – not the least new friends across all borders of the world – friends with whom we can share our experiences and our love for the guys and who will understand. I have gained lovely friendships here that I value highly – friendships that would never have occurred if “Il Volo” hadn’t brought us together. And the guys have inspired me and my husband to explore areas and sights in Italy that we would never had found ourselves. Those guys are such a blessing to many of us in so many ways.

So I understand how much they have likewise meant to Milli, so I do thoroughly hope that she will have her wish fulfilled. Somehow I believe that she will – whether or not the Flightcrew will be able to get through to the guys – as showing up at the Meet & Greet with her lovely dog will no doubt automatically open up the hearts of these guys. They are so aware of people less fortunate than themselves and they show it over and over. I recall this September back at their concert in Macerata, when they went down into the audience singing “Here’s to you”. I was in first row and Gianluca passed right by with his hand hanging loose for us to grab for a split second while heading directly for the adjacent section that was filled with people in wheelchairs. Reaching them he stopped and shook the hand of each and everyone of them giving them a smile and his full attention before continuing on. It was such a loving and heartfelt gesture. Hence I feel convinced that all of them will give Milli their full attention and love. Not the least Piero I should think will know how to deal with the situation in a caring way his beloved nonno being blind as well.

    Warmest regards – Kirsten 🇩🇰

    Sendt fra min iPhone

    1. Kirsten, you know how I feel about traveling alone and by plane, in different countries, I don’t even do it in Italy, so imagine how much I admire a girl like Milagros.
Knowing her also reinforced my idea that she is a very sweet but strong woman, who always sees the positive in things and in life, she certainly hasn’t given up on her condition of being blind. I think her example is of great help to those who are blind, but also to ordinary people who are afraid of everything.

As you said and as you can read from the various comments from all over the world, the beautiful thing that certainly went above my expectations when I started writing for Flight Crew, is the thread of friendship that connects all of us fans from all over the world, a thin thread of love and respect and this is also an effect of Il Volo’s music!!

  12. It was nice that you got to talk with Milli Daniela. She certainly is a brave girl. To be able to travel alone like she does is amazing. As Kristen said I think when the guys see her situation they will be very happy to speak with her. I wish her all the best at the concert and in her future. I’m sure she will achieve great things.

    1. Yes Cathy, we all firmly believe that Il Volo, seeing her and knowing her, can give a few minutes of their presence to Mili, especially Piero who had a blind grandfather, will surely have great admiration for her.

  13. A wonderful time and story thank you again and I pray the guys give her a few minutes as well she deserves it!!! as always beautifully written and will be saved Grazie !!!!!! Cindi

    1. Thanks Cindi, Mili certainly deserves our support so she can have some precious moments with Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca.
      Fingers crossed for her.

  14. What an amazing young woman! She is truly an inspiration. I hope the meet and greet is magical for her. May God bless her always.

    1. Yes Manola, I think Milagros’ lifestyle is a great stimulus and inspiration for many people.

  15. Dear Daniela:
Thank you for the beautiful and heartwarming story. It is amazing.
I want to tell you, I attended the Clearwater Concert on 3/10 and did vip package to finally get to meet the Guys as I have been saving for a very long time. There were quite a few to meet & greet them. We were not allowed to purchase items prior to our meet and greet as we were told we could after. When it came time for me to meet them, the photographer said hurry up, there are many people. I had a small notebook I had written for Piero and a bracelet gift for Pieros Mother. When it was my turn to say hello the photographer said hurry up. I didn’t get to say hello to Gian, Congrats to Ignazio, and to tell Piero of his little notebook. They asked my name I told them and that I was their devoted fan since their 10th anniversary concert. The photographer said hurry up. I don’t even know if I got a picture. I saved for months for this vip package and to say hello to Piero and get a hug. I am truly heatbroken. I was then taken out the back door of the building literally. No items to purchase, no nothing. I am still and will always be their devoted fan. Now will have to save up again. I am not complaining, just so saddened. I check emails every day for a picture. I thank you for listening and maybe, just maybe you can help me.
    Sincerely,
    Mary G. Dwork

    2. Oh Mary, I’m so sorry about your experience. Everyone is hurried like that. I am sad for you. I have one been to only one concert and meet & greet eight years ago before this one in Davie, Florida. The meet & greet was the same way. In fact I still had my mouth open saying something to Gianluca and never heard the photographer say 1…2….3! I made sure this time I turned my back to the photographer so I got to say one thing to them. We pay a lot of money for the meet and greet. You think we could get just one minute.

Please copy and past this link to view the Clearwater, Florida concert photos. Yours should be there.
