Editorial Reviews

On July 7, 1990, a magical night took place in Rome: Jose Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti sang together for the very first time in one of the most evocative temples of opera, the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome giving life to the biggest classical music project of the century, The Three Tenors. Twenty-six years later, worldwide platinum selling artists, Il Volo, pay tribute to the event and to the Three Maestri with their new album of a live concert event, Notte Magica A Tribute to The Three Tenors. The concert took place on July 1st at the Piazza Santa Croce, one of the most beautiful plazas in Florence with the famous Teatro Massimo di Palermo orchestra. Il Volo performed some of the most famous Neapolitan songs and arias from the Italian and international operatic repertoire all of which were sung by the original Three Tenors. As a special guest, Maestro Plácido Domingo conducted almost half of the program and joined Il Volo singing the classic Non ti scordar di me. Although Il Volo were not yet born when The Three Tenors first performed, they grew up listening to them, being fascinated and inspired by their voices and legendary achievements. Now, Il Volo deliver this music to a younger audience so they can experience the same emotions from that long ago magical night.

Italian tenor vocal trio Il Volo are one of the biggest names in classical crossover pop worldwide, with a sound that combines traditional opera, pop, and classical symphonic music. Formed in 2009 while the members were all contestants on the reality television vocal competition Ti Lascio una Canzone (Leaving You with a Song), Il Volo feature the talents of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble. Il Volo’s self-titled debut was released in Europe in November 2010 and earned platinum status; it arrived in the U.S. in May 2011, when the group also performed on American Idol. In February 2015 Il Volo won the Sanremo Festival in Italy with the song Grande Amore . After this triumph, the video for Grande Amore went viral with over 66 million views on YouTube up-to-date. Il Volo also represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, achieving a runaway phone-in success and won the Marcel Bezençon Award 2015 from international critics.

    1. Marie, I’m past crying, I’m in gasping mode! Can hardly wait for dvd! Steaming and dreaming in Texas! ♡♡♡♡

    2. Tears, chills, repeat…
      tears, chills, repeat…
      send to friends,
      tears, chills, repeat…

      Holy moly!

Thank you for posting this, Marie! To say “our boys” have grown up is the understatement of the century! (And I love every version they come in at every age: formal, pop opera, goofing around!)

So, I have pre-ordered my album on iTunes, but I’m waiting to order the hard cover CD because I also want the DVD. Does anyone yet know how to pre-order or obtain the DVD (Deluxe version, if there will be one) with or without the CD?

      Can’t wait!

      Whew!
      Jeanine

  1. I <3 this song and video. Just amazing and stunning. I look forward on CD and DVD, I communicated with owner of music shop, from where I have all my Il Volo music, and he assured me that I will be able to buy Deluxe version in his shop . 🙂

  2. As I saw that you posted the official video of Nessun Dorma I pressed immediately to be able to excite recalling the wonderful evening …. but unfortunately we Italians can not view the video . I am very disappointed of this denial !!! Thanks Marie and Lidka for being so fast . I’ll wait!!
How nice that Jana and Lorna see the beginning of the video . Enjoy everyone .

    1. I am so sorry you can’t see the video, Daniela. If I had more technical knowledge I probably could get it to you somehow, But alas..I have not.

However, it is worth the waitl

      1. Marie , I thank you but it is not a matter of technique , we Italians do NOT can see , in addition they also have blocked me my video I had sent you Nessun Dorma , now I can not see it for a copyright issue .

      2. Daniela, I live in Canada and many videos are blocked for me also for what they say are copyright issues. This always annoys me–especially when it is a video from a TV station that I could watch if I wanted to!

      3. Penina is really unjust this thing , Sony has blocked my video for copyright , but there are many other videos of Nessun Dorma , the copyright for them is not worth ?

      4. No because those were posted by private people. Maybe you can google Vevo and see if you can find it on their site. I think it is blocked in Italy because they want you to BUY the DVD. Here the DVD is not on sale. Yet. At least I hope it will be at some time.

    2. I have read that video isn’t available for Italy and also Malta. While in America is not offered Notte Magica – A Tribute to the three tenors Deluxe version (2CD and DVD), I think it will be related to PBS.
Daniela, maybe you know it, but on September 12, on Canale 5, at 21:15 , will be televised concert ” Una Notte Magica – Tributo ai Tre Tenori”. I have read that this is not confirmed from Il Volo, yet. Buona serata !

      1. Lydka Hello , thank you, I read yesterday that Channel 5 will broadcast the concert on September 12 , I think it is reliable because Channel 5 had taken the exclusive Italian .
I was able to see the video through a fan site of IL VOLO who are enrolled and who managed to publish it.
        Emotions that come back !!!
Instead my video has been blocked and can not understand why only my .

  3. What a beautiful video shot by sony! Brings back lovely memories. Lorna is to the right with the little arrow above her head.

  4. This video is so beautiful!!! Wonderful, Jana & Lorna to be there!!! My heart almost bursts with love & pride when I watch any of Una Notte Magica!!! Tears also!!! Have my CD ordered!!!

  5. Wow! Superb!! Their voices, the music, the setting…this is what I hope my heaven is like!! And Jana, I spotted you right away!

  6. Love this song ever since I first heard Luciano Pavarotti sing it and Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca sang it beautifully! Surely Maestro Pavarotti was smiling down on them. The video is stunning and since yesterday morning, I have watched this video so many times.! There was so much to live up to starting with this great song but as usual Il Volo did not disappoint and the looks on their faces at the end were lovely to see. How wonderful Jana, Lorna and Daniela that you were able to be there for this very special concert.

    1. Wow this video is truly beautiful. As soon as our guys started singing, I got goose bumps. To have been at their amazing concert must have been as magical as the concert title. I will be counting the days until I am able to purchase this special CD.

    2. Piero Ignazio and Gianluca were wonderful , I’m so glad I could be present at this show . My heart was pounding with excitement and tension , and when they began precisely with this song so hard and important all the whole audience rose in a long -deserved standing ovation .

      1. Awe-inspiring!
I saw how Piero was breathing pretty hard after, perhaps catching his breath, thinking We did it! He is so dedicated and so amazing!

What an experience to be there, Daniela!

        Ciao,
        Jeanine

      2. Hello Jeanine , I also think that Piero was glad I did it.
Too bad that in the video do not see the face of Ignatius ” OK , done” and Gianluca commotion that hold back the tears .
        Really tender .

      3. Daniela, your sharing is soooo precious. Thank you so very much for these inside experiences, including the looooong ovation!

I love these guys more than I can tell!

        Namasté,
        Jeanine

  7. This was always my favourite aria sung by Pavarotti, and now Il Volo have certainly risen to the occasion. Have played this continuously for the past 1/2 hour and every time It gives me the goose bumps. Cannot wait for the DVD and CD.

  8. Amazon better hurry up before I melt. Lucky you guys who were there in person. I’ll look for Lorna and Jana. Joanie G

  9. That was heaven for me the setting, the guys looking so gorgeous and of course their amazing voices . they sing with so much passion it is just breathtaking. to me. Can;t wait for the dvd and cd. Well done Il Volo Well done.

  10. I pre ordered and Amazon said I will get it to me by October 6.
Just listened to the “Three Tenors” CD that the boys seem to have followed even before the concert honoring them. Both sets of the Three Tenors” are unique in their own way.

  11. I have to, absolutely have to make some comments on this video.
I was going to wait until the whole thing came out and write a full length review, but I have watched nearly 2/3 ‘s of the program on shorter versions already and have seen other videos of this song. I cannot resist.

Piero is doing what he does so well all the time – full -bodied tone and great projection of sound all the while handling the high notes beautifully. Ignazio who can, sometimes, throw caution to the wind in certain pop songs, but here he is fully focused and centered. He shows the highest tessitura of the three and uses it masterfully. You see here a singer who is not clowning around but serious and focused. Bravo !

Gianluca, one of the best baritones of the day, singing a song that is for tenor. Normally, that should not happen or at least drop the key a couple of steps. However, Gianluca is no ordinary baritone. He has always had those high notes but does not usually use them – does not have to. He usually sings songs in the baritone range or does harmony. Tonight he brought them out into the spotlight and WOW ! Did you hear that ending it was in unison ! ! !

I am so proud of these guys as if they were my own voice students. This video is exciting. These young men are master singers in every way. The pop songs are left behind for a few days and in exchange we have the most demanding music from opera and classical and Broadway sung to perfection.

Chills and more chills. Also watch the Libera me

    1. Ahhh, Myron…
I was thinking as I read down the page, I want to hear from Myron, and I’ll wait until I read all the comments before I say so.

As always, you add such depth to our experience of the guys! And pride, because we know you are a fine voice coach who is reveling in our guys success, yes, as if they were your students!

Thanks so much for diving in on Nessun Dorma, and I look forward to a review of the entire concert once the official complete video is available.

      Truly stunning performance!
      Jeanine

    2. I looked forward to the comments of Myron because it is not only the heart but also technical . I am very happy to have read all the fine words and the compliments that have attracted our boys.
The video is beautiful but I think does not do justice to two very important things :

Piero Ignazio and Gianluca were encouraged with continuous looks and pats on the back , like saying ” go up to you , I am with you ” … too good , and that their humanity makes us love them even more.

At the end of the song the people ‘ literally exploded in a long applause , in the video seems very low but it was not like that at all , much, much more.
      Pure emotion .

  12. further reflection: Magic happens sometimes and maybe we cannot understand it. Just this March 25 the boys were our guests in Las Vegas at the first Il Volo Fan Faire. They came in wearing what teens wear and they showed the kind of wild excitement that teens and early 20-somethings tend to exhibit. joking around and looking as though they were ready to go play soccer.

Then magic ” poof ! ” – at 8:00pm – three men walked out on stage in the theater in the same building. They acted like men, looked like men in their suits and sang like true professionals with great experience.

Now on this video (just three months later) I see THREE MEN who must be 32 years old and very experienced and very professional come out on the stage and sing to perfection one of the great opera arias of all time.

from teen age playboy to mature man working his art to a “T ” . That is magic of a sort. I never cease to be amazed at these guys.

once again, there are other private party videos (not as good as the professionals, or course) that show other songs from “UNA NOTTE MAGICA ” – check them out on Youtube.

The producers have their version of “magic” but some of us saw the real magic of them going from playing around before concert to the concert status.

  13. alright, so I am full of words today.

For those who think singing this stuff is easy take a look at the very end of the this video with focus on Piero and you will see that he is totally winded. It takes a lot of power and strength to sing high B flats like that and you will note that all three ” NAILED ” it.

I love to kid him and Gianluca how such a huge powerful sound can come from such a skinny, short dude.
Go ahead and look at the end again.

That audience was blessed that night.

    1. Funny… I had just written something about Piero at the end “up above”… hadn’t gotten to your comments, Myron, or Jill’s.

I love to see that look on Piero’s face after he has nailed a challenging song, like his aria solo or Non Puede Ser. I love that he / they really take in the audience’s overwhelmingly excited response!

I feel like I just watched my kids (if I had kids) graduate summa cum laude from the most prestigious university on the planet. Wow Wow Wow!

I know we all feel this incredible awe. So sweet to share it together!

      Love ya,
      Jeanine

  14. Wow! As I have mentioned before Nessun Dorma is my favourite aria. It truly lift’s my soul. Myron commented that Piero was completely winded at the end, but he also looked like he was thinking ” we did it” They were magnificent! The goose bump’s started as soon as Gianluca started to sing, and the tears came when Piero joined in. I wonder how many more times I can play it before my iPhone blows up?

  15. The expressions on their faces as they finished this beautiful aria conveys the feeling of “how did we do with great anticipation ” You then hear the uproar from the audience with a great standing ovation! Then you see them break into smiles and Placido ‘s glance of approval. You could almost feel every ounce of their being taking in the accolades and breathing a sigh of relief. We did it! And boy did they do it! What talent! I can’t wait to order my CD

  16. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.
    ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.
    ABSOLUTELY IL VOLO.

    READ THIS AND FEEL; READ THIS AND CRY;
READ THIS AND EXPERIENCE ABSOLUTE JOY:

    Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principessa, nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle che tremano d’amore e di speranza…

No one sleeps! No one sleeps!
You too, oh princess, in your cold room
You watch the stars that tremble with love and with hope…

Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
    il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò,
    quando la luce splenderà!

But my mystery is hidden inside me
My name no one will know!
No, no, I will say it upon your mouth,
    When the light will shine!

Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
    che ti fa mia.

And my kiss will melt the silence
    that makes you mine.

    (Coro)
    Il nome suo nessun saprà…
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir!

    (Choir)
His name no one will know…
And we will, alas, have to die, to die!

    Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
    Tramontate, stelle! All’alba vincerò!
    Vincerò! Vincerò!

    Disappear, oh night! Set, stars!
Set, stars! At dawn I will win!
I will win! I will win!

    1. John Bravo , practice singing it.
Did you see that sweetness in these rhymes , not like certain songs today ….

    2. Thanks, John, for these incredible words and translation!
My fav… “You watch the stars that tremble with love and with hope…”

      IL VOLO joy to all,
      Jeanine

  17. OOh dear God above, this has been quite the week, I am on a staycation and as I watched the Olympics I have cheered, yelled, gasped and cried and now watching this video I feel like I went through it once again. Such pride, such confidence and such glorious singing! These are certainly not average young men, no they are made of other stuff quite too amazing to behold.

And we, we are so very very fortunate to be witness to it all.

Connie the exhausted and dazed (but still smiling) pirate.

  18. Thank you John for the translation of Nessun Dorma. Beautiful words in English. I love the boys singing in any language & I wish we could get the other songs translated also. This song is extra special. I can’t think of any other words but SUPERB as usual. The expression & passion that each of the guys had on the face was beautiful to see. There isn’t a singer on this planet who can top them.

  19. Just a little background on Nessun Dorma –

    From Wikipedia:

Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, completed by Franco Alfano, and set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni.

The opera’s story is set in China and involves Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the cold Princess Turandot. To obtain permission to marry her, a suitor has to solve three riddles; any wrong answer results in death. Calaf passes the test, but Turandot still refuses to marry him. He offers her a way out: if she is able to learn his name before dawn the next day, then at daybreak he will die.

      1. Marie,
in my country was filmed in 1989 fairy tale, a television film for children, Turandot. Chinese fairy tale was created on motives of fairy tales of the Thousand and One Nights, and is one of the most famous works of Carlo Gozzi. The classic fairy tale belongs to the golden fund of world drama. Fairy tale tells of a beautiful Chinese princess who mercilessly rejects love and saws down heads of all her suitors , if they do not guess three riddles. Prince Calaf guesses all the riddles and overcomes her hatred with love.Short description of fairy tale , it is interesting story with the attractive setting of the old China, the romantic story of love between Calaf and Turandot. As a child I saw it, nice fairy tale with visually interesting costumes. 🙂
        Here is photos from it:
        http://img.csfd.cz/files/images/film/photos/000/256/256742_3333f4.jpg?w370h370

    1. John – thanks for that and the earlier text.
It is a powerful text as is the story.

This next may have been covered already but I will add a little anyway. Turandot was Puccini’s last work. He wanted to move off into a new direction in opera and his music in general. He had been influenced when he was in America by Jazz and modern American sounds and that is why you hear those wonderful harmonies in Turandot and in Nessun Dorma. As he struggled to finish the opera Dr.s discovered that he had throat cancer . He went to Brussels for the surgery which was quite successful. But a post op. infection and his already weak heart could not hold up. He passed away on Nov. 29, 1924 at 64. The 3 act opera was not finished. He had stopped towards the end of Nessun Dorma which happens in act 3 but did not finish the rest of the act. One of his students did finish it and ended up using a reprise of Nessun Dorma to end it. The opera opened in La Scala later. The opera contains much incredible music but Nessun Dorma has stood out ever since.

  20. BRAVO Gianluca,Ignazio and Piero !!!! While watching the concert videos on July 1st and especially Nessun Dorma I went through an entire box of tissues as my tears flowed unrelentlessly the entire week end !! I have never before felt such pride and emotion as each of our magnificent young men gave the performance of their lives singing these difficult arias at a higher level than I had ever heard them sing before !! It boggles my mind that they were able to master these songs while performing almost 100 concerts around the world !! Their work ethic has always been and still is well beyond their years and we never get see how hard they work behind the scenes !! The tears still flow every time I listen to them sing Nessun Dorma !!

    1. I agree and I have had the same thoughts about how well they sang these songs after performing so many concerts all over the world. I realize they were singing some of the songs in their concer,t but it seems they would have had very little time to rehearse. Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca are a true wonder! They work so hard and make it seem effortless. It truly was “Una notte magica”!

  21. Carlo Gozzi was an Italian playwright. He was born and died in Venice; he came from an old Venetian family.A number of twentieth-century stage works were inspired by Gozzi’s plays. These include treatments of Turandot by Karl Vollmöller and Bertolt Brecht, operas based on the same story by Busoni, and, more famously, Puccini, Prokofiev’s The Love of Three Oranges and Hans Werner Henze’s König Hirsch. His works: Fiabe Teatrali — “Tales for the Theatre”, L’amore delle Tre Melarance — “The Love of Three Oranges” (1761), Il Corvo — “The Raven” (1761),Il Re Cervo — “The Stag King” (1762),Turandot (1762),La Donna Serpente — “The Serpent Woman” (1762), La Zobeide — “Zobeide” (1763),I Pitocchi Fortunati — “The Fortunate Beggars” (1764), Il Mostro Turchino — “The Blue Monster” (1764), L’Augellino Bel Verde — “The Green Bird” (1765),Zeim, Re de’Geni — “Zeim, King of the Genies” (1765) and many other plays as for example:
Marfisa bizzarra (1766),The Elixir of Love (1775/1776),Il Cavaliere Amico; o sia, Il Trionfo dell’Amicizia — “The Knight; or, The Triumph of Friendship” (Tragicomedy in 5 Acts),Innamorata da Vero — “True Love” (Comedy in 3 Acts)…. In my country was filmed several fairy tales based on his stories ( Turandot, Il Corvo…).

  22. Nothing else to add. You all have said it so beautifully. Question: I know the CD will be released on Sept 30. But is it true that the DVD, because it was filmed by PBS, will not be released in the USA until PBS uses it for fund raising probably in Dec.? We might have to wait until next year to get the DVD?

    1. The DVD is listed on Amazon Italy. I just may order it from there. I wonder how long it will take to get here.

      1. I just ordered the deluxe set from Amazon Italy. It said it was estimated to ship on September 30 and that it should arrive between Oct 14-18.

      2. That’s pretty good–it only is being released on the 30th. 2 weeks isn’t bad at all!
I think I will do it also! How much did it wind up costing?

      3. Does anyone know if I order the CD and DVD from Amazon Italy, are they formatted for use on equipment sold in the US? Just wondered if there are differences in CD and DVD players in the USA and Europe and if it would make a difference in playing the DVD?

      4. As far as I know they are the same. My sister bought one before from Amazon Italy and it worked fine. I ordered it too!

      5. From Yahoo Answers: Most DVD movies contain a region code, denoting which area of the world it is targeted at. The commercial DVD-video player specifications dictates that players must only play discs that contain their region code. This allows the film studios to set different retail prices in different markets and extract the maximum possible price from consumers. With region coding, studios can dictate release schedules and prices around the world. However, many DVD players allow playback of any disc, or can be modified to do so.

These players are called region-free players, and some shops sell players that are hacked directly, others sell players that can be de-zoned with a couple of clicks.

So, to answer the question: No, by default your UK-bought DVD player will not play DVDs from outside your region (UK being in DVD Region 2, which includes Western Europe, Greenland, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Japan, Egypt, and the Middle East). “

    1. Lydka, thanks for all your special videos and articles. I love to hear different versions of a song or aria that I like.

      1. Gina,Peter Dvorský , our very famous opera singer, also is dubbed as Pavarotti in Slovakia. 🙂 He sang at La Scala, Covent Garden,Metropolitan Opera, in Moscow, Verona, Florence…Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Boheme sung at La Scala, then the Verona Arena, in Munich (1984) and the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1987). In 1977 he performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the role of Alfredo Germont in La traviata. He was born September 25, 1951. In the early 80s he was officially assigned between four of the best tenors of the world (next to P. Domingo, L. Pavarotti and J. Carreras ) and he sang with world’s best singers. Luciano Pavarotti has repeatedly referred to Dvorský and named him as his legitimate successor. Despite the fact that Peter Dvorský did not become a popular global celebrity, he was one of the best tenors of his generation.

      2. I forget, he has 4 brothers and 3 his brothers also sing Miroslav, Jaroslav, Pavol, Vendelín is economist . Miroslav and Jaroslav are opera singers. Peter Dvorský is retired.

    1. Also from Yahoo: “You can change the region coding on your DVD drive 5 times before it gets locked. You can do this by opening My Computer, right-click on your DVD drive, select Properties, click the Hardware tab, highlight the DVD drive in the list and click the Properties button, click the Region tab, and then select a new region. It will show you how many times you have left to change it. Once you change your region, your laptop will be able to play the disc. At this point you could use DVD Shrink to make a backup copy of the disc so you can watch it anytime without having to change your region again.”

      Good Luck Penina!

  23. Before Il Volo, I never really cared about anything having to do with opera. I did not understand it and I never thought I could appreciate it. I was never closely exposed to it, although growing up in New York City I had access to many of the great performances of the world. Yet it took a YouTube video of three happy teenagers from Italy to open my eyes (and ears and heart) to this form of art and after hearing “No Puede Ser” and “E lucevan le stelle” I had one of those “Oh My God” moments and will probably never be the same again.

It really is wonderful how all of us here from different parts of the country and of the world can have a discussion about a topic such as this and share so much and learn even more from each other. Thank you for your comments and thanks even more for your contributions to this conversation. You are all what make Flight Crew so special!
