Christmas Memories by Susan De Bartoli

‘Twas three weeks before Christmas when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring not even my Spouse!
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Il Volo would soon be there!
That pretty much sums up what we all want for Christmas! Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca! Dream on, that’s not happening!
What I want for Christmas this year is for the guys to spend more time in the States!
When I was watching the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockerfeller Center last week, I was thinking about 2012 when our guys were there! It made me think that maybe it would be nice to relive some Christmas Memories!
Let’s go back to 2011 where we find the first Christmas presentation….
Christmas 2011 ~ The Tonight Show with Jay Leno “Christmas Song”

Those were the days when we could turn on our TV and see Il Volo on one of the night shows! The night shows the guys did were amazing! Why? These were three Italian kids who came to America and stole the hearts of the American people! American groups don’t get the opportunity to go on these shows. But again, they are not Il Volo! Amazing!
And let’s not forget the Christmas Tree lighting in LA!
Il Volo performs with Pia Toscano at the LA Live Tree Lighting

How absolutely amazing is this performance? I think Pia Toscano was in awe of those three teenagers!
Christmas 2012 ~ Lighting the Christmas Tree at Rockerfeller Center

This is by far was one of the best Christmas Tree lightings at Rockerfeller Center! They stole the show! Hopefully they will be invited back to light the tree again!
Christmas 2013 ~ Home and Family Holiday Show 2013

One of the things I miss about the guys not being in the States is their appearances on Home & Family Show. The guys cooked and sang and brought us much joy! One of the greatest shows was the 2013 Holiday Show. Guest stars on that show were Il Volo. They sang such beautiful Christmas Carols!
Christmas 2013 ~ Concert at the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi

I had a hard time deciding whether to use the Home & Family Show video or the Assisi video. So, I decided let’s use both!
Christmas 2014 ~ Concerto di Natale 2014 at the Italian Senate

Before I tell you what the guys had to say about this concert, I want to tell you that this is the most amazing Christmas concert you will see this year! The guys and the kids are phenomenal! They brought me to tears! And, I must say Pietro Grasso enjoyed it, especially all the old Neapolitan songs. I thought he was going to get up and sing with the guys! Reactions like this is why the classical Neapolitan songs never die! They stay in our hearts forever! A good time was had by all!
In their book, Ignazio speaking for the guys explained how it felt to sing at the Senate.
We want to talk about the thrill of singing in front of the highest office of state! What twenty-year-old boy has something like that happen? It happened to us, and it seems to me a beautiful result, an honor.
The concert was on December 21st. You cannot imagine the emotional feeling to be called “guests of honor” inside the Senate.
The fantastic Filarmonia Orchestra Veneta conducted by Diego Basso. Half the beauty of the song is in the orchestra.
We start with Christmas classics such as Adeste Fideles and White Christmas, but then there was also Caruso, Mattinata, No Puede Ser, Memory and of course our classic ‘O Sole Mio.
The most exciting moments? Every one! But the hymn of Mameli was the heart-pounding one, the first song, singing in that place, with everyone singing along with us, including Giorgio Napolitano, (President) and Pietro Grasso (President of the Senate). It is one thing that I cannot explain.
And then, of course, the pleasure of shaking hands with the President of the Republic and of feeling that he knows Marsala, he has been there.
Christmas 2015 ~ Santa Claus is Coming to Town!!

Alright so you don’t have a sense of humor! I couldn’t find a Christmas video for 2015. Let’s face it the guys were a little busy that year! Remember Sanremo and Eurovision
Christmas 2016 ~ Il Volo & Jackie Evancho sing “Little Drummer Boy” on the Today Show

And those were the days when we could turn on the morning shows and find Il Volo! This is singer and former “America’s Got Talent” contestant Jackie Evancho. She teamed up with our guys to perform “The Little Drummer Boy” live on the TODAY Show.
Christmas 2017 ~ Adeste Fideles (O come all ye faithful)

Ok! So, I cheated. This is actually January 2017. But isn’t it spectacular!
Christmas 2018 ~ “Voci di Natale” Líbano 2018

In 2018 the guys went to Lebanon to spend Christmas with the troops! What beautiful hearts they have! There are some very touching moments in this video! It warms my heart!
This story was so beautiful that I decided to include the link to the original translation of the video by Daniela Perani. It is so worth reading! Thank you, Daniela!

VOCI DI NATALE FROM LEBANON by Daniela

Christmas 2019 ~ O Holy Night (Especial Navidad Azteca)

This was a TV Special Navidad Azteca, of the Azteca Uno Channel of Mexico, recorded during the guys visit in November 2019.
Christmas 2020 ~ Piazza Pio XII at St. Peter’s Square

That was the year that was! What a wonderful way to take a year that we all want to forget about and turn it into an absolutely amazing moment. An event that will never happen again. One of the things I love in this video is Gianluca looking back at the light in the window of the Holy Fathers apartment! He knew he was listening to them!
This event was a prelude to the Tribute to Ennio Morricone that was planned for June 2021. It never took place at Piazza Pio XII but, it did take place at the ancient Arena of Verona. And what an unforgettable event that was! Let’s pray that the guys will have an opportunity to have a concert in Piazza Pio XII when we are finished with this awful business!
This one was my personal favorite! In a year when we really needed it, they made all of our Christmases bright!
Thank you, Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca for all the wonderful moments you share with us!
So, I hope you enjoyed reliving the guys’ Christmas Memories!
Let me leave you with the lyrics to another Christmas song!
I don’t want a lot for Christmas!
There is just one thing I need!
I don’t care about the presents,
Underneath the Christmas tree.
I just want you for my own,
More than you could ever know,
Make my wish come true,
All I want for Christmas is Il Volo!
Perhaps ask Santa for their album, “Il Volo Sings Morricone,” or a ticket to one of the many concerts on the World Tour!
One final thought! In the United States the Christmas season starts on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, the first day of Advent! In Italy the Christmas season starts on December 8th the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception. On that day the streets of Italy come to life with beautiful lights and decorations and wonderful street festivals. So, I would like to wish my Italian family, friends and fans a joyful Christmas Season!
Join me next week as I go back Through the Fields of My Mind and open the door to a new adventure!

  1. Thank you Susan for a wonderful article. I’m sure you would love them in the states a lot more, but please give a thought to fans like myself in the UK who never get the chance to see them live!!
I just have to appreciate all the video clips that are posted about them. I am also enjoying very much their latest cd.
A merry Christmas to everyone 🎄🎄🥳🥳🇬🇧🇬🇧

    1. Sob, blub, whimper, the ways things are going we won’t be seeing anybody here in the UK. We had 800+ cases in Barnsley today, that is up by 700 since yesterday.

Love the new CD, just about worn it out!

      Hugs Roz

  2. Thank you, so much, Susan, for the wonderful posting to us!! (I know I keep using that word, but all your postings to us are wonderful).
While my washer and dryer do the laundry I didn’t feel guilty about spending so much time with Il Volo ((other than washroom breaks). I made short notes as I watched, so I wouldn’t forget what I wanted to say.

Starting with Rockerfeller Center in 2012, I had to comment on Igna’s bouncing on his feet to the music. So typical of him!!
Also, Gianluca wearing a hat!! Thank Heavens he gave that up as part of his wardrobe. IMO, it detracts from the naturalness of their presentation.

Their concert at the Italian Senate – although those present seemed to appreciate our boys, due to the location (I guess), the audience was very reserved (no jumping up and down, whistling or cheering), with the exception of Pietro Grasso, President of the Senate, who (as you say) seemed to want to get up and perform with Il Volo. He was a joy to watch! The children, who signed along with the music, were exceptional and were thanked, appropriately by sign, by our boys and Pietro Grasso.

Our Gianluca isn’t one to show emotion too much, but I thought I caught a tear in his eyes as he sang “Silent Night”. Noticed a ring on his hand and his gold chain around his neck, which he wears to this date in his videos.

Igna continued his practice of :”leading the orchestra” in the Senate. His rendition of “Memories” was sensational!! Question” his glasses???
Their singing of :Oh Holy Night” could certainly be called Angel Voices.

Where was the location when they sang “Adeste Fidelis:?? Piero is wearing a scarf again, to keep his vocal chords warm. Smart man!

Now that I’ve described my feelings to most of the videos, I had better get to my laundry and start folding.. Forgot to mention that, while watching the videos, I had a non-alcoholic glass of egg nog, in keeping with the Season.

    Hugs, Susan, from Dolores (Dee/Bee).

    1. The bit about the members of The Senate jumping up and down, or not in their case, made me giggle.

I will believe you regarding the alcohol free eggnog, but if I find you have bruises from tripping over a certain feline,……… hmm, well, ’nuff said and all that! 😉 😉 😉

      Hugs Roz xxx

      1. My favorite tradition was making Gingerbread houses, we went to see Christmas lights, we had a party, and made cheerwine punch with pineapple juice and dr pepper or cheerwine it went everywhere, because they didn’t put a lid on the blender ,they put crushed ice too.

      2. Just old bruises from my last trip over the cat! No new ones, believe me, Roz (or not). Wish I could find where you get the imogies and I would use them, too! Hugs back at you, Dolores xoxoxox

    2. I’m going to say Germany because the houses look like then houses in Oberammergau. As to the glasses. I think he wear them when he has to follow the music in front of him. I’m glad you liked the article

  3. Brilliant Susan. I have seen one or two of the songs from The Senate, so it was nice to see more of it in one go. I’m listening to it at the moment, so if I talk gibberish, or my spelling goes completely to pot, please forgive me.

    Hugs Roz

  4. Susan, Thank you for putting this together for us. Their voices are certainly well matched to the Christmas songs.
One of my favorite postings about their past was about the time when Ignazio was still in school but appearing on TV on weekends. I don’t remember who posted it for us.
Has anybody heard anything about the tutoring they received when they left school?

    1. I think you’re talking about the article Watch Ignazio take Flight. I wrote that article. When the guys were in LA they went to school. But they also had tutors along the way

  5. Susan, all these memories are fantastic! Seeing and hearing them doing the beautiful songs of the season brings joy to my heart! Thank you for presenting them all to us. The North American Tour will start in a few months. Just knowing that the guys are on US soil does my soul good!
Thanks for your hard work to bring current news and memories to us every week! ❤️

  6. Can only agree with everyones comments!! THANK YOU so much for giving us all these little details, videos and interviews- it’s a blessing!! Christmas will always be special and even more so with the guys and their voices❤️❤️ Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!!! Also super excited for concerts next year!!🤞🤞🙏🙏

  7. Can never get enough of our guys and how they can fill your entire body with beautiful emotions every time they sing. God has blessed us in allowing us to hear, feel, cry and sing w/them /BLESSYOU RAGAZZI

  8. Thank you!
    Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and
a healthy New Year to the Flight Crew and families.

  9. Susan, you have kicked off Italy’s Christmas season and enhanced ours in a delightful way. This post is a keeper! I thought I had seen all of their Christmas appearances, but you found some I missed. What a treat–thank you so much!

  10. Thank you so much for these articles. I had forgotten about the 2020 concert. That one made me cry once again. I just can’t believe the talent of these boys. And it’s not just their singing, but how deeply they touch your heart.

  11. Yes, I too missed some of these videos because I was “Il Volo clueless” before 2015. What fun to retrace their time before then. Thank you for the charming timeline. They only get better, if that’s even possible. O Holy Night is truly awesome and I listen to it year round. I listen for Piero’s part, which is breathtaking.
Also love all the cat talk! Our last cat, Lizzie, a dark tortoise shell calico, lived to age 20. She was a sweetheart with her own chair at the dining table. She insisted on that, but not for eating, just for participating.

Thanks Susan, Daniela, Pat and anyone I’ve overlooked. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Bona Natale to all who count themselves as Flight Crew! Stay well!

  12. Thank you Susan! One thing about Il Volo singing is that at times I just get a deep thrill listening to Piero with his strong clear voice, and Igna voice ringing out bright as a bell, and Gian with that warm and low counterpoint to the highs of the tenors. And when they hold their notes so looooong it is a showstopper. Isn’t that why we love them? Their engaging mannerisms and those voices, gets me every time!

  13. Great article, ty for writing it …………. I wonder if they will ever decide to come to Australia?

    1. They have mentioned going to Australia next year several times. However the way things are going with this infernal Covid, who knows. I know Australia have ‘VERY’ strict policies over who goes where, even with just half a dozen cases. Like your near neighbours New Zealand, you have at least kept the disease under control.

I hope you are well clear of all the floods and fires. They sound pretty dreadful. I know we have peatland fires, usually started by some nutcase with a stray cigarette, and floods, usually in places where various rivers meet, Cockermouth and Carlisle for instance. But they are nothing compared to what you have in Australia, the USA too.

      Hugs Roz xxx

  14. Thank you Susan for a very meaningful story of IL Volo. Everything you said is true and they bring such joy to all ages whether 2 or 102. They are kind and giving and it shows when they perform. Wishing all a joyous and Merry Christmas! To “my guys” you are loved by me and I’m thankful I saw and heard you in concert in 2020.

  15. Thanks again for another wonderful article Can’t get enough of these guys My new CD has had a real workout Can’t wait to see them in April, my Christmas present to myself. Just praying this Covid comes to an end soon although things aren’t looking too good. Stay safe everyone

  16. Thank you, Susan, highlighting their and our Christmases really brought to me how many opportunities they had to be presented to the best situations. I want to say that I have a deep gratitude to their original team that prepared them to be Il Volo and for Mr. Torpidene who has placed them in so many of the highest-level events. His skill has presented them to the world.

  17. Thank you, Susan, for your review of Christmases past. You bring joy to my heart when you write of our boys’ exploits. Merry Christmas and a joyous & blessed new year to you😊❤️🇭🇺🇺🇸

  18. Dear Susan,
This is indeed a lovely record of what the guys have done at Christmas, through the years!
Been spending a few nights viewing those videos again, with a fresher perspective and deeper understanding. Appreciate your attaching Daniela’s translation of the trip to Lebanon. 🙂

A Meaningful Christmas to All!! :))
