– 8 DAYS TO SANREMO by Daniela

These days preceding the Sanremo Festival are full of news and events.
I’ll update you in order:
The video below that I translate for you was taken backstage, after Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio’s rehearsals with the orchestra. The woman who interviews them is from a Rai radio channel, RADIO TUTTA ITALIANA.
WOMAN= So, I’ll tell you right away that we back here (meaning in the backstage corridors) talk to many members of the orchestra (many master musicians) and they have incredible enthusiasm for your piece, in short,  you are already supported by the masters of the orchestra and I think that’s a good sign.
GIANLUCA= This is truly wonderful, especially after a year and a half of work. We’ve been working on this song for a long time, and seeing this positive reaction from the musicians is truly a great emotion.
WOMAN= The title is CAPOLAVORO (MASTERPIECE) and it marks a very important passage they tell me, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to listen behind the door of musical direction but it truly marks a passage, a significant upgrade in your career.
PIERO= Has this message always reached you from the orchestral players?
WOMAN= Of course!
PIERO= We know many of them and they have witnessed our artistic and also personal growth, because we were 15 years old and some of them played together with us.
Now the message we try to send is more mature, it’s how we see any feeling today, we sing it, we live it in a completely different way.
I haven’t talked about it with them yet (Ignazio and Gianluca) but if you think about it, paradoxically this song is sung differently by each of the three.
I sing for something or someone completely different from what they feel.
WOMAN= We know who the sender is, but not the recipient, when we listen to it, each of us will distort it…
PIERO= You just have to decide who to dedicate it to.
GIANLUCA= Let’s say that the meaning of the song is precisely this, it talks about a universal love and can be dedicated to whoever we want. I believe that, like the personal growth of each of us, we have 15 years of career, but we are different people and artists from when we started and we were 15 years old, and therefore the song wants to demonstrate a personal growth, a work of introspection that we have done in these years which obviously we then had the opportunity to cultivate it from an artistic point of view.
WOMAN= And then leave the job of crier, given that you are very famous abroad, of encouraging all Rai Italia listeners to support you during the Festival, above all of then telling your relatives in Italy to vote, vote, vote…
IGNAZIO= Don’t do it! 😂
Certainly what we have always wanted to do in these 15 years is to make our music reach more and more people, more cultures, more traditions, and obviously, follow Sanremo, listen to us, if you want support us, and if you don’t, want do it anyway. 😁
GIANLUCA= Anyway we’ll see each other around the world, we’ll be back on tour next year.
WOMAN = Sanremo first, come on.
GIANLUCA= Yes, Sanremo first and then it will leave…..
PIERO= We send you a big hug, see you in Sanremo, our song is called CAPOLAVORO!
GIANLUCA= Bye!

Radio Italia, communicates this interview to us:

14th Grand Press Gala of the Festival: Fiorello, Annalisa and Il Volo awarded

The 14th Grand Press Gala will be held on February 5th at the prestigious Villa Ormond, an unmissable event that anticipates the 74th Sanremo Festival. The anticipation is palpable as the Grand Gala reveals the nominations and anticipates the special prizes that will be awarded during the evocative evening starting from 8.30 pm. (Italian time)
Under the expert artistic direction of Ilio Masprone, the Gala will be hosted by the charismatic couple of presenters, Luana Ravegnini and Marino Bartoletti, a dynamic duo that promises to entertain the audience with their unique style.
The jury, chaired by Roberto Alessi, Marinella Venegoni, Dario Salvatori and Mario Luzzatto Fegiz, is ready to confirm the nominations of the prestigious awards for 2024. Among the prizes up for grabs, the assignment of the “Super Hit Award” to Annalisa stands out, an award that celebrates musical excellence.
Fiorello will be honored with the “Premio Numero Uno – Città di Sanremo”, a tribute to his extraordinary career and his unique contribution to the world of entertainment.
Il Volo, iconic Italian band, will receive the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award”, a deserved recognition for their lasting impact on the national and international music scene.
Other distinguished prizes will be awarded during the evening: Giorgiana Cristalli, Dalia Gaberscik and Mara Donà will be honored with the “Behind the Scenes Award”, recognizing the behind-the-scenes figures who contribute to the success of the event.
Music will not be the only protagonist of the evening, as DJ Georgia Mos and the ballet of soprano Claudia Sasso will add a note of elegance and entertainment to the event.
The Gran Galà della Stampa promises to be an unforgettable experience, an extraordinary preview of the Sanremo Festival which will delight fans of Italian music and will leave an indelible mark in the history of this prestigious event.

I am very happy with this recognition, but it seems really strange to me that it comes from the press!!
Furthermore, at least two of those members of the jury never spoke well of Il Volo.
It’s good that Bartoletti is there to present the evening, he has always been a good friend of our boys.
Other important news:
On January 31st all the lyrics of the songs will be published in the magazine on SORRISI E CANZONI TV, so we will be able to discover the words of CAPOLAVORO in advance.
The third evening of Sanremo is also called “Cover Evening” where the 30 singers must perform with a song already known and published by other artists, including non-Italian ones. The singers will have to perform with a national or international guest of their choice and Il Volo will perform with the American guitarist STEF BURNS. The peculiarity is that Stef Burns is a rock and jazz guitarist, therefore not a style of Il Volo, but if you remember, in 2019 they performed with Alessandro Quarta, a rock violinist and it was a beautiful performance.
But now we also know the song that will be performed: WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER by Queen!!!! ❤️
For those who don’t know it, here is the song chosen.

Stef Burns posted a photo on his page, with this comment:
Thanks to Il Volo who invited me to play with them in Sanremo 2024. Let’s do this! ❤️🎸🔥✈️✈️✈️
The photo of the scenography of the Sanremo Festival was also published, truly beautiful, this is what the stage where all the singers will perform will look like.

The magazine DONNA MODERNA has drawn up a ranking of the 10 most searched Sanremo winning songs ever on Google.

Click Here to view the DONNA MODERNA article

(I will only translate where it talks about Il Volo.)
Some Sanremo winning songs have become immortal and even after decades they are remembered, hummed in the shower and played on the radio. But what are the most loved songs in the history of the Festival? CasinoItaliani analyzed the data relating to the most searched for Sanremo winning songs on Google since 1951. Here are the results of the investigation.
In second place is “Grande amore” by Il Volo, which sees an average of 510,480 searches per year. The song was a huge success after winning the 2015 Sanremo Festival and placing third in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Instead, the ranking of the Sanremo song that received the most hits on Spotify is very different from this one, because Il Volo drops to seventh place.
Spotify is certainly used more by a younger audience and therefore here is the upheaval in the ranking and this is why Il Volo is so keen to enter the hearts of even the youngest.
And this is the short video of Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca leaving the theater after rehearsing. 🥰
Other good news, but which has nothing to do with Sanremo.
Italian TV offers the third series of MAKARI.
Then we will hear the theme song sung by Il Volo and written by Ignazio Boschetto! 🥰

Well, I’d say that’s all for now, but more news will come soon, I’ll also make an entire post on the rules of the Sanremo Festival, to better explain how the evenings work.
See you soon!!
Daniela 🤗

  1. Wow someone in the press had something really nice to say about ILVOLO! Thank you Daniella and Pat for another wonderful article about the current activities of our three wonders……without you we’d not have a clue as to this process! Your translations are invaluable to all of us non speaking of your beautiful language. I will eagerly look forward to the next article, I cant Wait to hear CAPOLOVORO! will we ever get to hear them sing WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER, I’m sure the guys will knock it out if the park! I’m looking forward to the next article with great expectations!
    Peace, Carol 💖💖💖🎶🎼🙏🏻☮️🤗🤗🩷🩷😉

    1. Yes, it’s true, Carol, someone in the press is differing, too bad he’s not someone who votes in Sanremo!
I can’t wait to hear the two songs too.

  2. Thank you Daniela and Pat. I managed to find the video last night with English subtitles. 🙂 But there was another one that doesn’t have them. 🙁

I am still not getting emails, I am wondering if I should try a different email account.

    Roz

    1. You’re welcome, Roz. Yes, please try signing up with a different email and see if that works. Maybe your email host has changed some settings or something and it filters out our notification emails. I’m sure if you use a Google email account it should work well. Let me know. 😊

    2. Roz, I hope your email problem is resolved.
As for subtitles, sometimes I read some really unfortunate automatic translations and then I prefer to translate anyway.

      1. 🙂 I won’t tell you what I came up with when I was translating the last book, but I doubt Piero would have been amused! Needless to say I spotted it, so changed the offending word to what it should be! All because I had typed the wrong letter in the original Italian. Ah well, I have learned more since then! 🙂 🙂 🙂

        Roz

  3. Thank you, Pat and Daniela. This is a wonderful article as we are all counting down the days and crossing our fingers.

    1. Kay, when it’s time for Sanremo the hands of half the world will be crossed, let’s hope it can influence the juries to give the right contribution to those who deserve it.

  4. A truly wondrous thing about the Grand Press award–even though a Lifetime Achievement Award seems a bit premature! It surely must be a relief and an encouraging sign for the guys. The Queen song will be great for them–can’t wait to hear it! Thank you so much as always, gals.

    1. Judi, I agree the Stampa award is really an excellent thing, but more than a career it is aimed at continued success abroad, it is easy to be successful if you are a small singer and sing well, but then maintaining success over time is absolutely more difficult and Il Volo has succeeded in this so far.

  5. Thank you for the wonderful articles you post can’t wait to hear their songs. Hoping they win they are the best❤️

    1. Angela, it’s what we all hope for, that they can win, but Il Volo, in their humility I think they would be happy with a good placing.
      Thank you for your compliments.

  6. Thank you Daniela and Pat for bringing us all the latest news. I always enjoy seeing that there is a new post to read. I had never heard the Queen song and look forward to hearing how the guys will perform it. Can’t wait for the contest to start.

    1. Cathy, I was a fan of Queen, magnificent, of course Freddie Mercury was incredible, but I was waiting for the moment that Il Volo proposed making this magnificent song which was also the soundtrack to the film Highlander, fantastic.
Ignazio’s voice will certainly express itself at its best.

    1. Thanks Rosina, we will definitely keep you updated, in fact there is already another publication ready, see you soon!!

  7. Thanks again so very much you two busy bees. You seem to work around the clock and I am impressed that you can keep it up as I am getting exhausted just trying to follow up reading your wonderful posts.

So great to learn of that Grand Press Award event – at which, if I have understood it correctly, the guys will receive a lifetime reward? WOW isn’t that a sour grape to swallow for the negative journalists? I see it as some kind of a “compensation” for their rude behavior? No matter what – I am very happy on their behalf.

Interesting choice for the duet – which most certainly is geared at the younger crowd and so absolutely as far from lyrical the lyrical comfort zone the guys can come. I do of course know Queen and Freddie Mercury very well but didn’t know this particular song. But it sounds like a perfect solo for Ignazio with Piero and Gianluca as the “juju backing singers”😜❤️ In similarity with “Somebody to love” that they did at a young age in an US Show and I have always found fantastic. Ignazio could have challenged Freddie Mercury any day – only this chosen song doesn’t seem to be requiring the same high notes or energy. Funnily enough I have now and then had the odd idea that Il Volo could do a fantastic version of “The Bobemian Rhapsody” – that would blow the roof off the stage. So if this song can just give a bit of that feeling it will be fantastic.
    Greetings – Kirsten🇩🇰

    1. Hi Kirsten, yes there is a lot of news and the award at the Grand Press Gala is truly unexpected and perhaps a little reparative, as you say.
The Queen song for the duets evening is wonderful, I couldn’t wait for them to sing it and now it becomes reality, but I have to tell you that I’m afraid of Queen lovers, who can’t stand those who sing their songs, in fact last time, when Il Volo sang Somebody To Love (in an Italian TV show), there was a lot of criticism like “Il Volo shouldn’t allow himself to sing Queen”, so I hope there are no similar comments this time.
Tomorrow there will be an interview on Radio Italia, every day there are newspapers with interviews, this is how Sanremo works, it is an event that gives a lot of media coverage……….and it hasn’t started yet.

  8. Thanks Pat and Daniela for keeping us up to date with Il Volo and the Sanremo Festival. It obviously is such an important event and it’s great to have Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca competing again. I am sure they will be fantastic as always. It is nice to see that they will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grand Press Gala since they have been so negative in the past. And celebrating 15 years together is really wonderful!
