GIANLUCA AN EAGLE FROM ABRUZZO by Daniela

A beautiful opening ceremony recently took place in L’Aquila (the capital of Abruzzo) marking the year 2026 in which L’Aquila was named “Italian Capital of Culture.”
The opening ceremony was attended by our President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and all the mayors of the province of L’Aquila.
Gianluca Ginoble, a true Abruzzese, contributed to the event by singing the beautiful and sad Abruzzese song “AMARA TERRA MIA” on stage. During his performance, a beautiful video of the Abruzzo region was shown.
Here’s the entire moment of Gianluca’s speech. (translation captions can be activated)

Beautiful lyrics in this sad but truthful song.
The landscapes that pass by in the video are stunning, and what can I say about Gianluca’s voice and emotion?
Fantastic! He sang a single verse in the Abruzzese dialect. Bravo, Gianluca!
Did you notice Maestro Leonardo De Amicis, who conducted the orchestra? He’s also from Abruzzo and a longtime friend.
Gianluca’s speech at the end of the song was absolutely sweet, extending greetings to President Mattarella, also on behalf of his companions, Ignazio and Piero.
Gianluca also wrote a beautiful article for the newspaper IL CENTRO that I’m translating for you.

Gianluca Ginoble: “L’Aquila, the city that accepts the responsibility of flying.”

The singer writes for Il Centro: “Destiny in the name has never abdicated the upward striving.” Quotes from Jung, Battiato, and San Giovanni: “This is a land to be proud of.”
GIANLUCA GINOBLE
Myths are not a thing of the past. They still influence human affairs, dramatize our internal struggles, disrupt our character, and inhabit our lives even when we’re unaware of it. Carl Gustav Jung said that “the gods have not disappeared, they have transformed into illnesses”:  into inner forces, tensions, desires, and ambitions that we simply cannot control or eliminate. Myths, in fact, represent archetypal ways of existence: symbolic forces from which we can neither escape nor fully recover. In cultures founded on myth, the gods were inhuman and eternal: the Immortals, as the Greeks called them. Forces that, precisely because they were eternal, made certain traits of the human soul indelible. If there is a mythical figure capable of embodying the tension of ambition, of impetus, of the desire to rise, it is the Eagle. The Eagle carries with it a name and a symbolic destiny. Ancient texts describe it as an animal with a hot, dry temperament and a voracious appetite, always associated with sacred contexts. It’s no coincidence that John, the most spiritual of the evangelists, is traditionally represented by an eagle: a creature that flies higher than all others, that gazes far ahead, that approaches the light without fear. The eagle is the bearer of the spirit in its highest form. It is ambition at its fullest extent: an instant bathed in the shining light and immediately ready to be reborn, to take flight again with the future still ahead. Even in Egyptian hieroglyphics, the letter A is represented by an eagle. Not a simple coincidence, but a sign. This is the symbolic power of a city that bears such a meaningful name.
This symbolism is almost inevitably accompanied by the thought of Franco Battiato (Italian singer), for whom the eagle has never been merely an image, but a key to access. Eagles, in his work, certainly recall a hit song, but above all a symbolic constellation deeply dear to him: that of birds, of the play of wingspans, of secrets revealed only to those who accept the risk of heights. Eagles are destined for unpredictable flights, sudden ascents, imperceptible trajectories that trace a sort of existential geometry. They are called to change their perspective on the world, to use his words. Walking, for an eagle, is an unnatural gesture: its vocation is flight, approaching the sky to intuit its secrets. L’Aquila is the city that rises, that observes from above, that accepts the responsibility of flight. A city that knows the risk of getting too close to the sun, of getting burned, but that never abandons its striving for the sky. Like the eagle, precisely. And Abruzzo is a strong and gentle land, reflecting this same archetype, as Flaiano described it: a harsh, severe, silent land. A region that seeks not to please, but to remain true to itself.
A simple, archaic place, unprone to rhetoric, where the landscape and its people share the same sobriety. A land that has given voice, art, thought, and resistance. A land to be proud of. Because L’Aquila is a city that has learned to rise again, to rebuild itself, to take flight again, always with wings stretched toward the sky. Despite its wounds, despite its difficulties, it has proven itself to be a people capable of strength and vision. Just like its founding myth: the eagle. Always in flight. Always alive. Always with its head held high.
And this is the beautiful moment when Gianluca shakes hands with the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella!
This article about the event published by IMUSICFUN is also very nice.
Gianluca Ginoble enchants L’Aquila: a solemn and distinctive inauguration for the Italian Capital of Culture 2026.
L’Aquila inaugurates 2026 as the Italian Capital of Culture in the presence of President Mattarella; emotion and identity with Gianluca Ginoble and “Amara Terra Mia”
L’Aquila officially opened its year as Italian Capital of Culture 2026 with an intense, solemn ceremony deeply rooted in the region. On Saturday, January 17, at the Auditorium of the Guardia di Finanza, the Abruzzo city began a journey that looks to the future, starting from memory. The ceremony was attended by President Sergio Mattarella, Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, Mayor Pierluigi Biondi, and President of the Abruzzo Region Marco Marsilio.
But more than a celebration, the event felt like a foundational act, a choral narrative intertwining music, words, and images. And among the most moving moments of the morning, Gianluca Ginoble, the singer of Il Volo, undoubtedly stood out, giving the audience a powerful and meaningful reading of “Amara Terra Mia.”
Gianluca Ginoble and “Amara Terra Mia”: The Voice of Emigration and Roots
Conducted by Maestro Leonardo De Amicis, Gianluca Ginoble—a native of Roseto degli Abruzzi—brought to the stage a song that symbolizes Abruzzo’s identity. “Amara terra mia” (Bitter Land of My Love) is more than just a song: it’s a chant of emigration, toil, and nostalgia, born in the early 1900s as a work song for olive pickers in the Maiella area.
Also known as “Nebbia alla valle” (Nebbia in the Valley), “Addije, addije amore” (Addije, Addije Amore), or “Casca l’oliva” (Let the Olive Fall), the song has been passed down through various choral harmonizations and made famous thanks to Giovanna Marini’s work in the 1960s. Ginoble’s interpretation captured the full emotional power of this oral heritage, transforming it into a moment of great civic and musical intensity.
It is no coincidence that the artist wanted to symbolically remember all his “fraternal colleagues”, underlining the collective value of music and shared memory.
Well, Gianluca, we’re here to congratulate you once again.
The event dedicated to your hometown was certainly welcomed with affection and enthusiasm by you, you who always sing the praises of your homeland.
You are a sensitive man who never forgets where he comes from.
We admire you greatly for all this and also for remembering your friends and brothers Ignazio and Piero in your greetings!!

  1. Hi Daniela,
I’m always mesmerized by what you send us. It’s so unbelievable to watch the lives of these boys. Their destiny was determined, and they have followed through. Just think of all the friends they have made in their lives. They have changed people not only with their voices but because of who they are in spirit.
Thank you so much for everything you send. We love all of it.
    Victoria

    1. Hi Victoria, nice to hear from you, I hope you’re well. I’m glad you like what I’m translating; it certainly helps us discover sides of our guys that we really appreciate. 😘

Ina, I agree with you. Gianluca always shows us his maturity, depth, and great culture, even if, by his own admission, it’s not proven by academic exams.
You see, you know the story of AMARA TERRA MIA well, a truly profound song that Gianluca performed with such love. I really appreciated the verse in Abruzzo dialect.

  3. It was a deserved honor and recognition for Gianluca. He is unique as an artist and as a personality.

  4. Gianluca definately is an Eagle, like his land, soaring to higher greatness! He has earned my love & respect! Love you, Gian!

    1. Martha, this is a truly beautiful definition. Gianluca is certainly an eagle ready to take flight, and Gianluca is aware and honored to be so.

Luz, I love your descriptions of the guys and how they work together. What a wonderful group of people they have who support them in everything they do.

And they are stronger because they have each other.

      1. Gracias, me anima tuco cepto.

      .
Luz, I agree with Pat, your descriptions, as I said, are exemplary and capture the essence of our guys who are truly “Truly exceptional individuals who shine with emotion and joy, maturity and a shared vision of life that comes straight from the soul”!

  6. Hi Daniela, I enjoyed reading your article about Gian. Very nice. Do you or Jana know if there are any more dates to be added to their US tour? People need to make hotel reservations and buy tickets if they are coming South. I was at the Hard Rock Casino last year when Jana was there. I agree with here that the meet/greet was not done properly. Very disappointed with it. Please let us know if you have any information about dates. Thank you very much!!!

    1. Hi Joanne, thanks for the compliments.
Unfortunately, there’s no news about additional dates for your tour at the moment. In fact, I’d like to take this opportunity to warn everyone not to buy tickets on unofficial sites, as I’ve seen scams with unconfirmed dates. BE CAREFUL!

      1. Thank you very much for your response. Appreciate you taking your time to let me know about dates. I keep looking on Ticketmaster and no new dates. Hope to meet one of you special ladies at one of the concerts. Would be a happy day for me 🤞

    1. That’s wonderful, Linda. You’d already told me about this news. You too must be proud of this subtle bond you have with Gianluca!

  7. The song title translates to, my bitter land , but Im sure its some thing much more romantic lol!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, as always so beautiful !!!!! Gianluca once so shy and in the background is now soaring as his own eagle !!! So proud of him, the group and the humility they continue to show, even after all these years amazing!!!!

    1. Cynthia, unfortunately, the song isn’t romantic at all; it speaks of attachment to one’s “bitter” homeland, which often forced its people to emigrate during the period it was written.
Gianluca sang it with all his heart.

  8. It is difficult to express how much I appreciate all your work to bring Il Volo to those us not able to understand Italian. It is lovely to learn more about the boys. Is there a way to send comments on the article directly to Gianluca? Sorry if this is a silly question, but at age 82 I am relatively new to following Il Volo and still learning my way about various sites. Thank you in advance for any guidance you can give me.

    1. Thanks, Patricia, for the kind compliments. It’s uplifting to know that you enjoyed our work and that it helped you get to know Gianluca, Piero, and Ignazio better.
When you see the original articles or videos attached, please give them a “like”, it’s the best way to let our guys know that we are following them , and to let the person who wrote the article or posted the video know that they did a great job.

  9. Brilliant as always! I’m getting pretty good at using the translation program and I’ll admit it is so much easier to have Daniela and Pitterpat do it for me! To Patricia Joy, please if someone tells you how to reach Gianluca directly, DONT DO IT! Scammers will inundate you with requests. I got caught and take it from me, they will try to get to you.

Gianluca, your music is music to my ears, heart and soul. May you forever sing the words and notes of bel canto and Elvis! Blessings to you, your singing brothers and your families. Peace to everyone 🙏❤️😂

    1. Well done, Sheila, for always warning fans of the various scammers who have no qualms about messaging or even calling you, pretending to be our beloved guys. DO NOT RESPOND; they’ll get tired of contacting you.

Gianluca, as always, presented a great image of himself and Il Volo at this event; he deserves all our praise.

Katharina, I really enjoyed reading your words about Gianluca’s appearance and performance at L’Aquila 2026. 😊AMARA TERRA MIA also impressed me greatly. Gianluca always puts his heart and soul into his interpretations of the songs he sings. I love how he never forgets to mention his “brothers”, Piero and Ignazio.

Katarina, what a beautiful description you’ve given.
I agree with you. Gianluca, in addition to giving a masterful performance so fitting for the moment and the event, also managed to create the connection that allowed him to recall his close colleagues Piero and Ignazio.
Gianluca is certainly a very profound and grateful person, as well as elegant in his manners and expressions, and it’s clear that his homeland is always close to his heart.

  11. Oh Gian , you make my heart soar! To think of you when I first discovered you and your glorious, sensual and sensitive voice…..it came so natural to you because you sing from your soul! You were such a shy sweet boy and have grown into a handsome man with a heart of gold that anyone would be thrilled to capture!……and so humble! Having to miss school after you were 13 you self educated yourself through books and curiosity, I for one am so very proud of you! I also love the fact that you always share your spot light with both PIERO and Ignazio.
You are a beautiful representative of your country and your homeland! God Bless you and your lovely family.
Daniela and Pat, thank you so much for you do for all of us who love ILVOLO dearly but really struggle with Italian…..always wish my husband had spoken that beautiful language but his grandmother Wanted the kids to be American!! Such a shame!
With my love & gratitude…God bless you always and PEACE TO ALL, Carol 💖💖💖🎼🎹🎤❤️😘🤗🙏🏻☮️

    1. You are always most welcome, Carol! I totally agree with everything you said about Gianluca! Such a sweetheart as are Ignazio and Piero! 💓

    2. Carol, your kind words and compliments to Gianluca are so true. He’s an extremely kind, sensitive, and profound person.
The bond that unites our three guys is evident even when one of them mentions the other two. It was truly a very generous and affectionate moment on Gianluca’s part.

You’re right, it’s a shame your husband’s grandmother didn’t want him to learn the Italian language; roots must always be nourished.

  12. Thank you for the translations. Grand Sasso must be one of the pictures shown. My Bitter Land along with the other two, Old Tailcoat and Marvelous are favorites.
Dont forget Olympics starting Feb. 6 and FIFA World Cup in June in Mexico, Canada and USA. Maybe boys will do something at one of these events which is why the delay of East Coast tour dates. We can hope.

    1. Joan, yes, the beautiful images in the video are mostly of the Gran Sasso, beautiful views.
Yes, the Winter Olympics are starting soon, but so far there’s no news on whether Il Volo will be at either ceremonies. We know Bocelli was at the opening ceremony, so it’s likely Il Volo won’t be there.

  13. When I read your article, I was not surprised by the content because you are truly graceous, courageous and a healthy young man. However, life may not always give us what we want when we want it, but things we need will always show up on time. Let life surprise you and remember that as we grow old and wiser, always keep our counsel because the spice of life is taking time for pleasure and joy. Don’t get scared from the challenges of life, I believe that in every struggle is a step to growth. You and Il Volo will always be special for me, so much for what I know about music and your guys exceptional voices, its pure magic!

    1. You’ve given Gianluca excellent perspective and encouragement, Natividad.
Life is certainly an unknown, nothing is certain, which is why, at least from an artistic standpoint, the support of fans is essential. They need to feel our affection.

  14. First of all – a huge congratulation to Gianluca for a brilliant performance at the inauguration of the town of l’Aquilla as “The cultural town of Italy 2026”. No one more worthy of the honor to represent the town and Abruzzo could have been found. The choice of song and his beautiful and emotional interpretation of same were perfect for the occasion as well. Not an aria, not a lively Bel Canto but a serious tune relating to Abruzzi – and even in parts performed in the local dialect. There have no doubt been a lot of thoughts behind this exquisite choice. And as usual elegantly presented with due respect to the audience and the level and ambiance of the event. Further, I do understand that he did likewise add some words of his own which had been very appropriate too. Abruzzo (and his family) must rightly be so proud of him!

PS: Actually, I recall him singing this song in Mantua back in May as I was puzzled as to it. Never having heard it before and without having the slightest idea of what it was all about I sensed that it meant something special to him. He rehearsed it extra at the sound check. At first I thought it was a French chanson as the musical language sounded French to me with the accordion – like a Musette waltz – yet not at all. Daniela put me straight later when asked about it. I do believe though that he was doing kind of a medley including this song among others though…

Gianluca has indeed evolved personally the last couple of years. Not only has he perfected his voice but he has turned into a highly intellectual and well-educated man joggling with quotes from world-famous thinkers and expressing himself verbally and in writing profoundly in a refined language. The article he has been writing in the honor of l’Aquilla had me in awe – plus the need of looking several words up in the dictionary being unfamiliar with them… OK English is not my mother tongue but I do normally not encounter problems in reading/understanding English, so I was challenged and had to read the story more times. But what a beautiful take on the subject… three different aspects on “eagle”, which I understand l’Aquilla can be translated into. Elegantly written…. You could say he was flying high himself (il volo?) I wonder what profession he would have ended up doing if he hadn’t become a singer… He is a wealth of knowledge and artistic abilities. What an awesome man. I look forward to follow him in the future as well, as I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet!

Thanks Daniela and Pat for bringing this lovely article – it was interesting indeed!.
    Best regards – Kirsten, Denmark

    1. Kirsten, you remember very well what happened in Mantua. In fact, Gianluca performed this song in an abbreviated form, along with two other songs that paid homage to Modugno: “Vecchio Frac” and “Meraviglioso.” In fact, “Amara Terra Mia,” although brought to success by Modugno himself, is a song of Abruzzo origin.
I agree that Gianluca performed it exemplarily, pouring into it all his deep love for his homeland.
I also completely agree about Gianluca’s evolution and maturation over time; his article was truly an act of love for his homeland.

    2. You’re welcome, Kirsten! 😊 Gianluca is indeed an awesome young man and we continue to find out more and more of who he is and how he thinks.

  15. This article just gave me a better insight on what went on during the L’Aquila ceremony. Thank you. I was mesmerized by Gianluca’s rendition of Amara Terra Mia, I must have listened and watched it on YouTube more than a 100x.

I also sincerely appreciate the English translation of what he wrote for Il Centro newspaper. So enlightening about Gianluca’s mind. Just think he didn’t finish college but he has that innate intelligence which he further honed through reading various books.

In my eight+ decades on earth, I’ve never encountered a singer, nor could consider one, to be of Gianluca’s caliber. He has so many admirable facets to his character: an extraordinary voice, so very handsome ❤️ features, his elegance, fashion sense, intelligence, humility, kindness, respect, humanitarianism, etc. With all that, you would expect him to be so conceited and out of reach. Not so. He seems to be well-grounded and approachable, as are his colleagues Ignazio and Piero. Kudos to them and their parents.

I’ve been following this group (unabashedly focusing more on Gianluca) in the last 2 years. I can say he truly deserves to be named Abruzzo’s person of the year and the guest of L’Aquila, attended by no other than the president of Italy. Despite being by himself, he never forgot and proudly mentioned his colleagues Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone. So much love and respect for them.

Is there anything more with which this young man can astound us?

He is indeed God’s gift of light. All three deserve their names Ignazio – the fire that keeps the group’s energy, and Piero for stabilizing the group for more years to come.

    1. Anne – I freely admit I have followed them for 3+ years! Saw them last year in Niagara Falls and was in the first row and am certain I drooled everywhere. I believe Gianluca has only grade 8 education in school terminology; however in the world of knowledge he has his doctorate of Everything That Matters in Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow! My wish for him is to be happy and since I am too old for him to find a younger version of all of our fans who rank in the 65+ age group🎶❤️❤️‍🔥❤️. His eyes, his hair, his cheeks and of course his voice along with his humility make him a perfect man to love! Better sign off, I have run out of tissues 🥴

      1. Oh Sheila, my feelings for Gianluca are exactly like yours. I started following this group in January 2025. My, my his eyes along with his smile, singing or not, just have that magical effect, even from afar. I was on the 1st row during the sound check, and on the 9th row during the March 2025 concert in Clearwater Fl.
Alas, we were not even aloud to hand over our gifts personally during sound check or concert, as I have seen done on YouTube during some European concerts.

These three guys are just adorable and their harmony beats any group I’ve heard.

My ardent wish for Gianluca is to find the right person with which he’ll be happy. (How I wish it could have been me 😁😂🤪in another life, as I’m sure, all others wish and dream, too.) Ha, ha, ha. My children and grandchildren think I’m getting looney.

      2. Oh my gosh, and here I have been complaining about the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles as we were not allowed to hand them our gifts either! That is the last time I ever take gifts. Now I wonder why the difference between Europe & USA?!?!

      3. That’s awful. But as crazy as people have been acting, it’s no wonder. I see them in Texas this year (Amy FIST live show. Hope I can control my 76y/o self ) but NO guarantees. Hahaha I have a gift for Gianluca I would love to get to him.
Please GIVE ME your feedback…..this is the two Memphis Newspapers from Aug 1977 the day Elvis passed away. I live around the corner from Graceland and an Elvis FAN!! I kept these all these years and thought he might like them. What do you girls think???🤔

      4. Go for it – I bet he may already have them! I visited Graceland years ago and toured the Lisa Marie plane! Thought the home was so small and his aunt or some relative lived upstairs! Loved seeing Elvis’ outfits!
It used to be a question “where were you when you heard Elvis had died?” Do you remember where you were?

      5. Thank you. Yes he probably does have them. But I’ll try anyways. I couldn’t get M and G and Soundcheck wasn’t an option. I hope the security will give them to him. I also have Elvis trading cards to give him. They’re like baseball but Elvis. Pretty meet. Thank you again sista for answering. ♥️♥️

      6. As you well know, Gian is an avid Elvis fan. Your articles would be greatly appreciated, however, as it seems things are different here in the USA compared to Europe, I fear you would not be able to give gifts to Gian. I would not be surprised if he never receives the gifts. Sorry to burst your bubble.

      7. You aren’t looney, you are MATURE! On our Sound Check, Gianluca came to each row and shook our hands and answered a few short questions! Some of us were a little slow letting go of him! I wonder who?

    1. Ahhh Gianluca is such a beautiful person inside and out . He has the voice of an Angel. It reaches the depth of my soul and even though I don’t speak Italian it brings tears to my eyes. All three guys are wonderful in every aspect. I love them all. And can’t wait to see them in Sugar Land, Texas.

  17. Well, I have absolutely NO idea what all he sang about, nor what she said afterwards. (I don’t speak Italian). But I can tell you he sang so beautifully (as usual) and transcended me to another world and on the wings of an Eagle. The most magnificent bird in the world.
And what that lady said to him after, I know she was right on. I didn’t understand it but who cares….I love every one of those three guys and they are FabUlous!!
Thank you so very much for posting, spending so much time translating for us.
I love you all at the Flight Crew office!! ♥️🌹♥️
