GIANLUCA AN EAGLE FROM ABRUZZO by Daniela

A beautiful opening ceremony recently took place in L’Aquila (the capital of Abruzzo) marking the year 2026 in which L’Aquila was named “Italian Capital of Culture.”
The opening ceremony was attended by our President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and all the mayors of the province of L’Aquila.
Gianluca Ginoble, a true Abruzzese, contributed to the event by singing the beautiful and sad Abruzzese song “AMARA TERRA MIA” on stage. During his performance, a beautiful video of the Abruzzo region was shown.
Here’s the entire moment of Gianluca’s speech. (translation captions can be activated)

Beautiful lyrics in this sad but truthful song.
The landscapes that pass by in the video are stunning, and what can I say about Gianluca’s voice and emotion?
Fantastic! He sang a single verse in the Abruzzese dialect. Bravo, Gianluca!
Did you notice Maestro Leonardo De Amicis, who conducted the orchestra? He’s also from Abruzzo and a longtime friend.
Gianluca’s speech at the end of the song was absolutely sweet, extending greetings to President Mattarella, also on behalf of his companions, Ignazio and Piero.
Gianluca also wrote a beautiful article for the newspaper IL CENTRO that I’m translating for you.

Gianluca Ginoble: “L’Aquila, the city that accepts the responsibility of flying.”

The singer writes for Il Centro: “Destiny in the name has never abdicated the upward striving.” Quotes from Jung, Battiato, and San Giovanni: “This is a land to be proud of.”
GIANLUCA GINOBLE
Myths are not a thing of the past. They still influence human affairs, dramatize our internal struggles, disrupt our character, and inhabit our lives even when we’re unaware of it. Carl Gustav Jung said that “the gods have not disappeared, they have transformed into illnesses”:  into inner forces, tensions, desires, and ambitions that we simply cannot control or eliminate. Myths, in fact, represent archetypal ways of existence: symbolic forces from which we can neither escape nor fully recover. In cultures founded on myth, the gods were inhuman and eternal: the Immortals, as the Greeks called them. Forces that, precisely because they were eternal, made certain traits of the human soul indelible. If there is a mythical figure capable of embodying the tension of ambition, of impetus, of the desire to rise, it is the Eagle. The Eagle carries with it a name and a symbolic destiny. Ancient texts describe it as an animal with a hot, dry temperament and a voracious appetite, always associated with sacred contexts. It’s no coincidence that John, the most spiritual of the evangelists, is traditionally represented by an eagle: a creature that flies higher than all others, that gazes far ahead, that approaches the light without fear. The eagle is the bearer of the spirit in its highest form. It is ambition at its fullest extent: an instant bathed in the shining light and immediately ready to be reborn, to take flight again with the future still ahead. Even in Egyptian hieroglyphics, the letter A is represented by an eagle. Not a simple coincidence, but a sign. This is the symbolic power of a city that bears such a meaningful name.
This symbolism is almost inevitably accompanied by the thought of Franco Battiato (Italian singer), for whom the eagle has never been merely an image, but a key to access. Eagles, in his work, certainly recall a hit song, but above all a symbolic constellation deeply dear to him: that of birds, of the play of wingspans, of secrets revealed only to those who accept the risk of heights. Eagles are destined for unpredictable flights, sudden ascents, imperceptible trajectories that trace a sort of existential geometry. They are called to change their perspective on the world, to use his words. Walking, for an eagle, is an unnatural gesture: its vocation is flight, approaching the sky to intuit its secrets. L’Aquila is the city that rises, that observes from above, that accepts the responsibility of flight. A city that knows the risk of getting too close to the sun, of getting burned, but that never abandons its striving for the sky. Like the eagle, precisely. And Abruzzo is a strong and gentle land, reflecting this same archetype, as Flaiano described it: a harsh, severe, silent land. A region that seeks not to please, but to remain true to itself.
A simple, archaic place, unprone to rhetoric, where the landscape and its people share the same sobriety. A land that has given voice, art, thought, and resistance. A land to be proud of. Because L’Aquila is a city that has learned to rise again, to rebuild itself, to take flight again, always with wings stretched toward the sky. Despite its wounds, despite its difficulties, it has proven itself to be a people capable of strength and vision. Just like its founding myth: the eagle. Always in flight. Always alive. Always with its head held high.
And this is the beautiful moment when Gianluca shakes hands with the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella!
This article about the event published by IMUSICFUN is also very nice.
Gianluca Ginoble enchants L’Aquila: a solemn and distinctive inauguration for the Italian Capital of Culture 2026.
L’Aquila inaugurates 2026 as the Italian Capital of Culture in the presence of President Mattarella; emotion and identity with Gianluca Ginoble and “Amara Terra Mia”
L’Aquila officially opened its year as Italian Capital of Culture 2026 with an intense, solemn ceremony deeply rooted in the region. On Saturday, January 17, at the Auditorium of the Guardia di Finanza, the Abruzzo city began a journey that looks to the future, starting from memory. The ceremony was attended by President Sergio Mattarella, Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, Mayor Pierluigi Biondi, and President of the Abruzzo Region Marco Marsilio.
But more than a celebration, the event felt like a foundational act, a choral narrative intertwining music, words, and images. And among the most moving moments of the morning, Gianluca Ginoble, the singer of Il Volo, undoubtedly stood out, giving the audience a powerful and meaningful reading of “Amara Terra Mia.”
Gianluca Ginoble and “Amara Terra Mia”: The Voice of Emigration and Roots
Conducted by Maestro Leonardo De Amicis, Gianluca Ginoble—a native of Roseto degli Abruzzi—brought to the stage a song that symbolizes Abruzzo’s identity. “Amara terra mia” (Bitter Land of My Love) is more than just a song: it’s a chant of emigration, toil, and nostalgia, born in the early 1900s as a work song for olive pickers in the Maiella area.
Also known as “Nebbia alla valle” (Nebbia in the Valley), “Addije, addije amore” (Addije, Addije Amore), or “Casca l’oliva” (Let the Olive Fall), the song has been passed down through various choral harmonizations and made famous thanks to Giovanna Marini’s work in the 1960s. Ginoble’s interpretation captured the full emotional power of this oral heritage, transforming it into a moment of great civic and musical intensity.
It is no coincidence that the artist wanted to symbolically remember all his “fraternal colleagues”, underlining the collective value of music and shared memory.
Well, Gianluca, we’re here to congratulate you once again.
The event dedicated to your hometown was certainly welcomed with affection and enthusiasm by you, you who always sing the praises of your homeland.
You are a sensitive man who never forgets where he comes from.
We admire you greatly for all this and also for remembering your friends and brothers Ignazio and Piero in your greetings!!

OUR TIRELESS GIANLUCA by Daniela

Everyone knows that Gianluca Ginoble is the most social of Il Volo.
But he doesn’t just post beautiful photos and videos, he never stops promoting his beautiful native region, to which he is very attached.
This time he was invited to L’Aquila (the capital city of Abruzzo) for the presentation of the GIRO D’ITALIA (the most important cycling race in Italy).
Here is his speech:
Host = We have here with us a pride from Abruzzo: Gianluca Ginoble.
Come here with us, a round of applause to this very young talent, thank you for being here.
We brought you into a context a little different from the one you frequent, but sport is still a context of discipline, of sacrifice, to achieve dreams.
You have achieved a dream, a huge dream to cultivate …
Gianluca =  There is also one thing in common the symbol of infinity produced by the two wheels (he refers to the symbol of the Giro d’Italia drawn, in which the wheels of the bicycle form the symbol of infinity), which is a little like the Bel Canto, which is an eternal (infinite) music.
I must say that I am honored to be here, in the midst of so many champions, we also have a common friendship, which is the great Marino Bartoletti and that I care to greet him.
Host = He is a friend of ours, we give him a round of applause, because he will surely come back to visit us, he follows us, he loves Abruzzo.
Gianluca = It is a way, as I said, to promote this wonderful land, known all over the world, from the sea to the mountains, and it is certainly a message of hope, to return to live a normal life, with the organization of large events, such as concerts and the Giro d’Italia, return to see the streets full of people, and therefore I am truly honored to be here to represent my land, and I am very proud to be from Abruzzo.
Thanks, I’m really glad to meet you all.
Host = We thank you (applause).
We thank Gianluca who, among the many commitments, managed to have a little time for us.
I would also like to thank his dad, who helped us, he was our hook, we salute him, Ercole. He cares a lot, because it is a family matter to help Abruzzo.
You have been kissed by a gift, you guys are so talented (Il Volo) and you never forget Abruzzo.
What other projects are there? Can you tell us something?
In the music scene, which we remember at this moment is almost at a standstill, it is really difficult for them to go on, which in any case continue to produce, thus allowing musical operators to work. Then we also remember that at the beginning of the pandemic, Gianluca was the protagonist, together with other artists, of a fundraiser, dedicated to show business operators who, with their families, were stopped. Therefore a constant commitment in this sense.
Gianluca Ginoble with representatives of the Giro d’Italia bicycle race
What, what projects are there? Anticipate something.
Gianluca = I want to remember, since the mayor of L’Aquila is also here, that one of the most touching experiences of my life was to be able to interpret, a few days after the 2009 earthquake, we were participating in the program on RAI1 … …
Host = You were very young.
Gianluca = I was fourteen years old and that evening, live on RAI1, I was able to interpret Gounoud’s Ave Maria, and represent my land, even if for this sad cause, unfortunately, but for me, also a way to remember how proud I am to be from Abruzzo.
Now we are leaving again, we are making a great event in June at the Arena …. I shouldn’t say it, damn it, it escaped me …. (because this video was recorded before the official news, laughter of understanding from all), I only said Arena, I didn’t say where.
It is the hope of being able to start again, in two months, then.
It is a project that will be a tribute to the great master Morricone, we also had the opportunity to present him in Sanremo, as guests this year, singing “Once upon a time in the west”. It will be a collection of all the songs, the most beautiful soundtracks of the maestro, then a tour will start and then a record that will be released shortly.
Host = Ennio Morricone was also particularly close to this region, honorary citizen of the city of L’Aquila, and is still close in memory, last year there was a concert by his sons. I must also remember the beautiful performance of Il Volo in the “Perdonanza 2019”, in  Collemaggio avenue there were at least 15 thousand people, at the time we could all be close.
Gianluca = But we’ll be back, mayor.
Host = It was a spectacular thing, with Pastore’s lights on the basilica, beautiful and you absolutely must go back.
Gianluca = Yes, definitely.
Host = Let’s have a round of applause and good luck.
Gianluca = Thanks.
Host = Thank you Gianluca from the heart, but really from the heart.

He is always the one who keeps us updated on his piano exercises, sending us small pieces of pop songs, truly remarkable.
He is always the first one who tells us about the movements of Il Volo, the last a few days ago, a trip to Turkey, but for what ??? Nothing has been published. Maybe a private event ??
Be careful and safe !!

And he is always the first to give official news, like this one:

It will be exciting to return to perform, in this particular period, at the Verona Arena, which we are very fond of because, like us, it acts as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Times remain difficult but it is an important step towards that extraordinary normality that we Italians need most.
We look forward to seeing you on 5 June at the Verona Arena.
See you soon!

The guys on stage in the Verona Arena

Yeah, but he thought to give us only the good news, and to avoid telling us that the concerts scheduled at the Verona Arena for the end of August, are again postponed, for the second time !!
Damn, what a mess, I was hoping to see a concert this year. I still have the possibility of a tribute to Morricone, but they are already saying that it will be done anyway even if the public may not be admitted.
However, our government has said that from April 26, the reopening of the open-air theaters with limited audiences will begin, so there are still good hopes.
Fingers crossed!!

But now I want to give you a moment of rare sweetness, listen to this beautiful video of “MI MANCHERAI” (taken from the film Il Postino), recorded in September 2019 in St. Petersburg.

Yes, Gianluca, you are really full of energy.
Thanks to you, we often get news and photos that help us make certain bad days better
Thank you for always being so present, tireless Gianluca.
The Volovers hold you in a big affectionate hug.

GLEANINGS ON IL VOLO by Daniela

We know that young Korean singers appreciate the music of Il Volo very much, in fact they often offer their songs, even in the Italian language.

It must be really difficult for them, a language so different from their own, but they have sensed that our boys’ songs are beautiful in their original language.

Yesterday, on Twitter, thanks to ItaGuyIV, the videos of two songs were published, don’t pay attention to the syncro, because the audio is not well synchronized with the video, ………. but you already have heard these songs ??

https://twitter.com/i/status/1299329977830313990

Yes,  it is MUSICA CHE RESTA and VICINISSIMO, but what a strange impression to hear these sung like this. Anyway congratulations to these three Asian guys.

It seems to be a competition performance and seeing the reactions of the participating boys (all very young) it seems to me that this genre is very popular.
It has a certain effect to think that the songs of Il Volo are taken as a model, analyzed and copied for a singing competition.

But I am proud of this.

Of course, they are still far from imitating the union of the voices of our three boys!!

While trying to find news about our three boys, there was this nice message from IL VOLO:

You have always been close to us with great affection, with your voices that accompanied ours during concerts, with your heart and with your words also through the many messages you send us. This time it is we who send you a message full of affection, we are here to gather around you in this particularly difficult period. We will come out stronger than before, together!

After the concert in Monte Carlo, and the party in Sicily, Piero Ignazio and Gianluca returned to their homes.

Sometimes, some fans have an unexpected meeting, and then publish the photos and so we too can see where our favorites are.

Ignazio was photographed in a barber shop in Milazzo, a Sicilian town.

GLEAN 02

Piero, visited the beautiful Palatine Chapel in Palermo.

GLEAN 03

The Palatine Chapel is located in the Norman Palace and is entirely covered with gold mosaics from the Byzantine era.

It is a Unesco heritage site.

Gianluca went to L’Aquila to see the PERDONANZA CELESTINIANA 2020.

GLEAN 05

If you remember, in 2019, a year ago, IL Volo did the concert for the Perdonanza Celestiniana and it was a great success.

In this photo, Gianluca with master Leonardo de Amicis, who directed Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero at TI LASCIO UNA CANZONE.

The photo was posted by Leonardo de Amicis with this dedication:

“Friendship, affection and esteem.”

The latest news is that Il Volo will participate in an event in the Arena in Verona, to support the “invisible” people (workers, electricians, audio technicians, etc.) who work for the concerts and that COVID19 has reduced without work.

There will be many singers including Il Volo. The event will be broadcast by RAI 1 on 5 September.

GLEAN 06

For now, that’s it.

Let me know what you think of Korean singers singing in Italian.

As for Piero Ignazio and Gianluca, even if it will be for one song only, I am really happy to see them on RAI1, in a few days.

IL VOLO FOR L’AQUILA “PERDONANZA CELESTINIANA” by Daniela

This year is also the tenth anniversary of another event, but very sad, that concerned Italy at that time – the Aquila earthquake – a series of seismic shocks that destroyed most of the villages of Abruzzo in the province of Aquila and claimed 309 victims.

We all know that Gianluca Ginoble is a native of Abruzzo, and we know his sensitivity to his homeland, which he loves so much. Several times I heard from Gianluca that he wanted to do something, really useful for this land.

I am sure that Gianluca will have pushed a lot for this event and, knowing the sensibility of Ignazio and Piero, surely he will not have done much to convince them.

The event was announced by TG ROSETO, with this article from which I translate the most important parts.

L'Aquila 01

TG Roseto Article – Click Here

On 26 August at 9.30 pm at the Teatro del Perdono, Piazzale di Collemaggio, the Music Show, stories and emotions entitled “Il Volo per L’Aquila” will be held, which will be accompanied by the Grand Symphony Orchestra of the Italian Conservatories, conducted by master Leonardo De Amicis.

The musical group of Il Volo, Gianluca Ginoble, Ignazio Boschetto, Piero Barone and have decided to pay homage to the city of L’Aquila on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the earthquake giving up their compensation, lending their voices and their talent for free with the will of leave something beautiful and real to the city.

Places on the Prato are free. The 1500 chairs are paid and everyone will pay, even the authorities. The proceeds of the tickets will be used to support boys who will be trained at the conservatory.

L'Aquila 02
(photo during the rehearsals of the concert)

Really a beautiful initiative, thanks to the great heart and the availability of Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio, very commendable.

I liked a passage on the article, it was written that everyone, including personalities, will pay for the ticket (only 15 euros). Yes, because here, in the various concerts, often the celebrities or at least the personalities, enter without paying. Unseemly.

With the boys, on the stage, there will also be Alessandro Quarta.

Another thing that pleased me to read about the article, is that the orchestra conductor will be Leonardo De Amicis, the one who directed them in TI LASCIO UNA CANZONE, remember?

Here they are, together in this photo.

L'Aquila 03

Gianluca, 10 years ago, sang for the L’Aquila earthquake, you remember a little child who was singing Gounod’s “AVE MARIA”,  also this year IL VOLO, will dedicate a particular song, during this event and it will be “AVE MARIA MATER MISERICORDIAE”.

Guys, there is no song more beautiful and suitable than this one. You will sing it with all your heart and we will listen to you with great affection.

L'Aquila 04

L'Aquila 05

L'Aquila 06

It rained in the afternoon, big clouds are still in the sky, and now the show begins.

And here’s to the TGR Abruzzo news, what they said about them.

PR = Waiting in L’Aquila for the IL VOLO concert.

Full of appointments, the PERDONANCE program, many tourists in the city.

We connect live with L’Aquila, where the 725th edition of the PERDONANCE is going on, tonight there will be the IL VOLO concert, live for you with Gianluca Ginoble interviewed by Daniela Senepa.

DS = I’m here on the stage of Collemaggio, where there is rehelase of IL VOLO that is trying the AVE MARIA. Sorry everyone, we are the TGR of Abruzzo, turn to the camera, excuse yourself guys from the orchestra. IL VOLO, for  AQUILA, you are trying the Ave Maria, there is truly your embrace for this city, which is trying to re-rise.

P = We are very close to this city, also because 10 years ago, when the tragedy happened, we were at TI LASCIO UNA CANZONE, the program where we met, we lived fully that moment, there was also the maestro De Amicis, maestro , come here beside us.

DS = Here behind me, on the other hand, there is an extraordinary violin, we listened to the tests and I assure you that my heart beats fast, then when it sings IL VOLO, accompanied by these orchestral boys is a very important moment, (she he turns to Ignazio), because it’s not just your art, but also what you dedicate it to, so it’s a very important moment.

I = Absolutely, we are honored to be here and to be able to sing for all the Aquilans, and above all for all the people who came here to give a symbol of solidarity, for what happened 10 years ago, all united together, music, art, and that’s what we do every day. We must say thank you, certainly to Leonardo De Amicis, who invited us, and we could not say no, but thanks also to Alessandro Quarta, he too, like us, came to help, to spend an evening in music, all together.

DS = Gianluca, I’ll call you by name, because you were born here, you’re from Abruzzo, born in Roseto. Teramo has suffered a lot from the earthquakes of central Italy, I know that for you, it is a strong emotion, every time.

G = Yes, I’m not from L’Aquila, but I feel a little for Aquila, because 10 years ago, immediately after the earthquake, in the following months, they moved many Aquilans to the coast, so many were boys of my age, I made friends with them, but then, I never saw them again. Maybe tonight they will be here and we will sing for them and for all the inhabitants of the Aquila who are here to spend moments of joy and happiness.

L'Aquila 07

Is evening, the tickets are all sold out, people arrive with great traffic difficulties and parking.

But then it all begins, and “it is music, the real one that remains.”

“IL MONDO”

“MUSICA CHE RESTA”

“GRANDE AMORE”

At the beginning this next video, the master De Amicis, says that he has known the boys since they were really small, and he finds them again, after 10 years, grown up, sensitive and immensely artistically, a gift to the Aquila and to all the people.

Then he calls the mayor, to offer the boys a little recognition.

The mayor says that they have seen so many concerts in L’Aquila, but they have rarely seen so many people, so much emotion, for such an event, which has joyfully paralyzed Aquila. “You have given us indescribable emotions, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

L'Aquila 15
(in the photo the boys with the maestro De Amicis and the mayor of L’Aquila)

Here is another short video by a fan:

“MUSICA CHE RESTA”

“A CHI MI DICE”

In this photo, during their stay in L’Aquila, Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero also had time to visit a summer camp for small children.

L'Aquila 16

But still, a series of beautiful shots of the event.

Guys, I have no more words and I want to conclude with these shared by Gianluca. Mr. Ercole Ginoble shared it with the maestro De Amicis.

Daniela

“Abruzzo is a wonderful land for many reasons. The biggest reason is the emotion that provokes seeing a city wounded in the depths, like L’Aquila, react to one of the most disconcerting tragedies that nature can unleash with such great strength! At 10 years from that earthquake, seeing 20 thousand people warm a square there made you more proud to be there last night! ” ❤️

For Iaia

From Beverly from <3 Il Volo <3 Pittsburgh Fan Club:

“This video is from the start of the concert in Roccaraso on June 18. Our guys announced that the concert was being dedicated to little Iaia (Yaya), who has been undergoing treatment for Nueroblastoma (a cancer which generally originates in the adrenal glands). She desperately needed treatment in the US. After the people of Abruzzo (the region in which Iaia’s family lives) began the campaign “Un Sogno Di Iaia” (Iaia’s Dream), with the help of Il Volo (more so Gianluca, himself being from Abruzzo), she and her family were able to travel to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY and she received the treatment she needed. The ever-compassionate and tender-hearted Gianluca is visibly quite emotional, and his sweet brother Ignazio comforts him. Bless his heart’!”
