Il Volo, or “When Opera Meets Pop and Rock”

The Italian trio is preparing to make their debut in Brazil for the ninth time.
When Luciano Pavarotti (1935–2007), Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras gathered at the Baths of Caracalla (Rome) under the baton of Zubin Mehta during the 1990 World Cup, they could never have imagined they would forever change the classical music market. “The Three Tenors,” a collection of opera excerpts and folk songs, sold fifteen million copies worldwide and created a new market segment: pop classical music. From tenor Andrea Bocelli to guitarist André Rieu, countless instrumentalists, singers, and vocal groups emerged, translating concert hall works for those who had never before frequented these venues.
Il Volo, composed of tenors Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto and baritone Gianluca Ginoble, belongs to this category. Having emerged in 2009 during a music competition at the Sanremo Music Festival, they have developed a career that blends bel canto with popular music. The trio was brought together by the production and performed a version of “O Sole Mio.” “When we met on that Italian TV show, we shared this musical genre because we both sang. But we only listened; we couldn’t tell Pavarotti from Bocelli,” the members say.
The trio arrives in Brazil this week for a series of concerts in Curitiba and São Paulo (see details below). It will be their ninth visit to the country.
“When we first came, we were thrilled with the audience’s response and decided to always include Brazil in our world tours,” they say. There is, indeed, also a spiritual reason for this adoration. “The composers of that period [Puccini, for example] felt that the music they created brought them closer to God,” they say. “It’s more than commercial music; it’s something very spiritual, eternal. Because it awakens that spiritual dimension within us, which we sometimes hide because we’re distracted by so many things. That’s why I think this type of music is very powerful around the world, even if people and audiences don’t understand a word we say, because it awakens something very deep within us,” they conclude.
But what about the domestic audience? “Brazil is one of the countries that most appreciates bel canto. Also because there are many Italians and people of Italian descent. And there’s a strong bond between Italians and Brazilians,” they reply. “And then there’s the greatest Brazilian artist, Roberto Carlos, who came to the Sanremo Festival many years ago and became very popular in Italy too. So, there’s this mutual exchange. We’re a family.”
Il Volo’s Songs
One of Il Volo’s strengths lies in the diversity of their repertoire. For example, they have an album dedicated to the compositions of Ennio Morricone (1928-2020), the composer and conductor responsible for some of the most iconic soundtracks in film history. Morricone, believe it or not, was snubbed by many classical composers because he was considered a “minor creator” (there’s a prejudice against soundtracks). “They didn’t accept Morricone because they were tied to the dogmas of composition, you know? How can we simply not accept a musician like Ennio Morricone just because he represents an evolution of classical music? His creations have the beauty of some of Puccini’s operas,” they say, referring to the composer of operas such as “Tosca” and “Turandot.” “Morricone represents the perfect evolution of this musical genre and fully embodies Italy, just like us. We are not just opera singers, but we want to represent the beauty of our culture through our voices, performing works by Morricone, Puccini, and many other classics.”
Il Volo, of course, isn’t The Three Tenors. One of the young men has a different vocal range. But they share the same mission: to make opera accessible to a non-specialist audience. “This is our goal. We know, and are fully aware, that most people have never been to the theater to see an opera. Listening to opera isn’t easy, and we don’t listen to it every day,” they explain.
Piero, Ignazio, and Gianluca have been together since adolescence. What’s it like growing up in the entertainment world and putting up with each other for so long? “The key word is respect. If you respect people and your colleagues, you can stay together for life. We haven’t just worked on the music and the artistic side, but we’ve always dedicated ourselves to our relationship,” they reply. “Being a group is like being married: we’re together and live together for years, and we spend most of our time together. Music has to be the priority.”
Respect and love for music create a unique blend, ranging from opera arias to reinterpretations of Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever.” Il Volo proves that opera can be enjoyed by everyone.

The guys with fans.

Vibra Sao Paulo posted these photos and wrote:
“Here we are still reliving our last night with Il Volo ✨
Another unforgettable night with the outstanding voices of Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone, and Ignazio Boschetto at Vibra Sao Paulo!”
And finally, I recommend this interview with Robert Bannon. (You’ll have to skip past the halfway point to hear Il Volo.)

And the four concerts in Brazil are over, and I must say, as always, with great public success and renewed affection for our guys.
Ignazio, Piero, and Gianluca wave goodbye to us from the airport, along with the Di Stefano twins, who will be following them to Argentina!!
But I would like to tell you one last piece of great news: Il Volo has been confirmed as a guest at EUROVISION, here is the announcement.
So, let’s get ready to follow our golden boys at Eurovision too!!
But let’s hurry, the last leg of this South American tour is almost over, so our guys are already in Argentina!!

See you soon: Daniela 🤗

  1. Thanks, Daniela, for sharing their tour with us. I can hardly wait for April to get here, along with Il Volo. I will see them twice on the run and my anticipation and excitment grows more each day. Safe travels as you continue with their tour.

      .
Yes, dear Luz, as you’ve noticed from the audience’s participation, the hearts of many fans are filled with uncontainable emotion. This is the effect of Il Volo, young men who carry the “bel canto” and songs of our tradition in the palm of their hands. United by brotherly love, smiling, clean-cut, and always spoken with respect, their voices enchant and leave a deep impression on our hearts. They are special.

  3. Once again Daniela a great review. Thank you.
    Always so interesting and informative.
Love following. The ragazzi looked so good and sang so amazing.
Looking forward to hear the remainder .

I just want to say, my Italian friend Lucia who followed the boys since 2009, passed away a few weeks ago, she was very talented and did some amazing art work, drawings of the boys. Ignazio was her favorite. Every week she came to me to watch the concerts on YouTube. She was sad she couldn’t see them live.
I hope when I go in December in Bologna to see them, I will try to take them some of art work in her memory.🙏
If it wasn’t for Lucia I wouldn’t be following Il Volo.
    Just wanted to share.

    Thank you
    Love Fenella x

    1. What terrible news, Fenella! Your friend Lucia has passed away. How sad. I remember well that she was an artist and that you two used to watch Il Volo concerts together. Lucia took you to Il Volo, and you’ll bring her drawings to Il Volo.💖

      1. Yes it was very sad, especially when we played 3 songs of il Volo during the funeral.
I hope that I will be able to give some art work to il Volo at the concert, without the Security stopping me.😊
Maybe if I can go towards the stage, as everyone else I see do this.

        Thank you again
        ❤️

    2. Fenella, I am so sorry to hear of your friend’s passing. It sounds like the guys brought her much joy. 💗

      1. Thank you.
Yes she loved the guys since 2009. Following on Italian TV.
        Being Italian herself.
        Amazing artist.
She has left so much art work on Il Volo.
Plus she has made a salt clay sculpture on Ignazio he was her favorite although she love Piero and Gian.
I hope maybe if they visit the Uk, I could give him and them her work in her memory.

we even did a jigsaw puzzle.

She didn’t have a great life, they were her pleasure.
        She passed to early.

And I will miss a good friend, she introduced me to Il Volo and now I’m obsessed to.
Thank you again and for your amazing input on there concerts etc.
        Regards
        Fenella ❤️

  4. Daniela, thank you for this information. This interview is the first I’ve heard any mention of the boys including Florida and New York in the tour! I’ve checked every day, but still no dates posted. Fingers crossed that they add more US cities to their tour!

    1. Thanks Nina, it’s always a pleasure to be able to share interviews with you where there might be some good news, and we hope it comes true!

  5. Another well done to you,Daniela and all the Fightcrew.
Looking forward to more as the guys continue on their tour.
Barb W — a fan from Michigan USA

  6. Thanks Daniela and Pat! As always wonderful videos , three wonders indeed! They must be exhausted by now!
They’ve been very well received everywhere, I still need to listen to the interview later…..BRAVO!! Waiting for Spring!!!
Sending my love and gratitude to both of you, Carol
    💖💖💖🎼🎹🎤❤️😘🤗🐇🐣✝️🙏🏻☮️

    1. It’s true Carol, wherever they go it’s an outpouring of affection and this makes us understand that Piero Ignazio and Gianluca have sown not only talent, but also a lot of love.

  7. Beautiful review and videos and pictures. I see the D’Stefano twins with them. Will they sing also? Great to have friends like that.
Love Il volo and come to Pittsburgh ❤️🇺🇸
    Linda

    1. Thanks Linda. The Di Stefano family won’t be singing with them, but they’re happy to accompany their friend Gianluca on part of the Volo tour. They’re friends with all three of them.

      1. I have read articles about Gianluca leaving and going to LA and as a solo.
There are so many things and rumors i think about them splitting up too. They have all concerts set up this year and 2027. Let me know

  8. Another great tour for the guys and another post filled with so many beautiful photos and videos–thank you so much, Daniela and Pat! And that’s great news about Eurovision!
I don’t know if I should ask this, but when they are in South America, I can’t help thinking about Venezuela and Michelle’s family and wondering if they are still there, or if they are living in Italy now. A large part of the world seems to be such a fragile and dangerous place these days.

    1. Judi I’m so glad you asked about Venezuela! I have been worried about them everywhere! This world is in a constant state of war, trauma with all of us waiting to see who decides to strike with the big one first!
I love my American friends but the man at the top has made life for Canadians terrible.
Gas is 2:47 a liter on the west coast, prices are rising for food everywhere- however I’d cook Italian if Il Volo would come here! Even make coffee for breakfast!
Well if we could find out who is married to whom and what part of LA Gian is moving to, I’d rest my rant!

Oh yes, I should let you all know I fell and broke bones above my ankle! Surgery tomorrow hopefully, I will have the guys to listen too!
      Hugs Sheila

      1. Hi Sheila. I have been wondering about Michelle’s family in Venezuela too – but I trust we would have learned by now if they were in trouble or unsafe, should that be the case. Seeing all the lovely photos of Michelle and Gabriele, I feel convinced though that the family is all OK.

PS: I think you have been reading “fake news” – there are no questions as to whom is married to whom when it comes to the Il Volo guys – nor of Gianluca moving to LA. It’s all nonsense and fake. I can only suggest you to refrain from reading all the fake posts on FB and Instagram that seems to be everywhere these days. Stay put here on “Il Volo Flightcrew” and you can be certain of only correct and verified info will be brought about.

        Best regards – Kirsten

      2. You’re right, Sheila, I thought the same thing. Unfortunately, half the world is in turmoil. Every day there’s bad news, even in the countries where the boys have performed. Fortunately, everything’s gone well so far, and people want to sing and forget about the bad things that are happening.

Sorry about your fall, be careful! Best wishes for your surgery. 😘

    2. I also thought the news about the Eurovision guest appearances was fantastic, Carol. Who knows what song they’ll perform; I’m hoping for a nice medley.
I think part of Michelle’s family is still in Venezuela, but I hope everything is okay where they live.

  9. To Daniela and Pat – from beginning to end – a fabulous article. I especially enjoyed the translation of the article from Billboard Brazil. I’ll be seeing the guys very soon in LA then San Diego, Columbus and Detroit.
I feel blessed and very excited.

    1. Thank you so much, RoseMarie. It’s always a pleasure to look for new things for you and to know they’re appreciated. Time flies, they’ll be here soon!

  10. Thanks team Daniela/Pat for bringing us up-to-date again. I am so glad to see all those fine videos and read all the great things said about them. This South American Tour seems to be nothing but one huge success following the next. And although having been on the go for several weeks by now – and up/down with counless planes and in/out ditto number of hotels – they do not show any fatique at all. Rather in the contrary. So happy on their behalf :-).

I do always enjoy reading articles and watching interviews – so thanks for bringing these to us. The artilcle from “Billboard Brazil” isn’t exactly correct as to facts, but it conveys a fascination and fondness of the guys, so who cares. That the world has become very small is truly coming across watching “The Roundtable” Show. 3 guys from Italy being interviewed by a media in the US via an online connection to a hotel in Mexico. They seemed happy and relaxed and open to all the questions.

It seems like few days ago only that they waved good bye to Italy and now in just a few days they will already be boarding the flight back home. The South American Tour has come to an end. Where did that time go? But soon they will be hitting the road again and you lucky Americans will be the next destination on their World Tour. I wish those of you having been able to get tickets for their US Shows a fantastic time!. Enjoy! Warmest regards – Kirsten, Denmark

  11. Tell me, Kirsten, time really flies. I was just thinking about the South American tour starting yesterday, and we’re already at the end. And what can I say about our guys, always bright and smiling, they don’t seem tired at all, so much the better.
I’m glad you liked the translation. I’m always looking for articles so I can translate them for you. I have one in the works that was published at the start of the tour, but I prefer to translate it for you during a long break from concerts. 😉

      1. Hi Mark. “The Eurovision Song Contest” is this now some 70 year old TV-show bringing most of the European countries together in a festivve song contest. The oridingal name was “European Grand Prix”. It started out small with one evening where all contestants were presented with the same orchestra accompanying them – and there would be a jury for each country to vote. The host of the next show will be handled by the country from which the winner come. It has now developed into a huge event with some 30+ countries participataing (incl. Austtralia and Israel – don’t ask me why…) and takes place over 3 days with two semifinals and then the Grand Finale, at which only the best placed singers will take part.. These days voting is made by telephone by the public in all countries participating plus from a pro ditto jury and these points put together will lead to the winner. The type of music has changed from being popular family style sing-along to modern tunes aimed at the young audiences these days and the music is now taped and presented with huge light and show effects. Only the singer and dancers are truly live. This year it will take place in Vienna, Austria – and there are a lot of political subjects mixed into the concept, hence several countries have withdrawn their participation.

Back in 2015 Il Volo was singing the Italian entry (which in that country is based on the winner of their own “San Remo Festival”) – so they were entering with “Grande Amore”. They won all the public votes while the juries were less excited and hence ended up in the third place. That is why they are considered to be present at this year’s Show I believe, as being the 70th of the sort the organizers are going to celebrate it with a festive cavalcade in one of the intermissions.

        Kind regards – Kirsten, Denmark

  12. Daniela, I believe I saw a video clip with Claudia in a seat close to the stage. It went by so fast but I managed to take a screen shot. Maybe in Argentina. Shared by Romoulda (spelling?)

  13. I see articles about Il Volo splitting up and Gianluca going to LA for solo . I know he loves Abruzzo where he is from . And I know they have many concerts for 2026 and 2027
Let me know. Linda Pittsburgh USA 🇺🇸
