IL VOLO IN PALAZZO TE MANTOVA by Daniela

And the time for the Mantua concerts has arrived!!
I had tickets for Saturday, May 10, for me, my husband and my daughter-in-law’s mother, and now here I am to tell you what I saw and heard.
As you know, the concerts scheduled in Mantua in the Exedra of the beautiful Palazzo Te were 3 and exactly on May 8 – 10 – 11. I had tickets for the 10th and I was hoping for optimal weather because the week before the concerts had not been nice at all, in fact the first concert, on day 8, took place in the rain …..
This video released by our guys that day is very fun….

CLICK HERE to view the Facebook reel

PIERO= There’s the soundcheck.
WOMAN= Yes, you can come in.
PIERO= Thank you, ma’am.
IGNAZIO= Thank you.
PIERO= Come on guys, we can do it even in the rain.
IGNAZIO= (he confirms with a gesture)
PIERO= Two drops won’t stop us.🥰
GIANLUCA= Not even the rain will stop us. 🥰
But now let’s get to the concert I attended on May 11th.
LOCATION= The Exedra of Palazzo Te looked very good, 4,000 seats and a large stage right in the conclusion of the garden and behind the stage the arches that close Exedra.
Everything was very beautiful but the Verona Arena is definitely a bigger sight, a different impact!
A large classical orchestra, with the addition of electric guitars and drums and a large choir accompany the music conducted by Maestro Rota.
The inevitable Maestro Grani on the piano!
Ignazio, Gianluca and Piero, elegant in dark suits.
Two large side screens to better see the protagonists of the evening.
A beautiful scenography flowed between the various mural arches of the end garden of Palazzo Te.
A scenography itself had also been obtained from the beautiful mural paintings of the rooms of Palazzo Te.
Every now and then on the big screen behind the singers a large time clock appears that stops on the year of the chosen song’s release.
CONCERT BEGINNING= Spectacular!!!
For the opening song THE FINAL COUNTDOWN by Europe was used, a really powerful way to start, with the use of lights and a scathing rock singing, really beautiful!
I didn’t make videos because I knew that there would be a TV broadcast soon and then there were many fans in better positions than me so the videos I use here are not mine.
A selection of beautiful songs, many and of every genre. It ranges from classical opera to pop and rock. Piero Ignazio and Gianluca can interpret any genre, they are chameleons of music!!
The titles of the songs chosen are mainly for an Italian audience, I remember in fact that they will be broadcast on Canale 5 and therefore the Italian singer-songwriters have been valorized and the guests are predominantly Italian.
Naturally, all the hits from Il Volo’s musical repertoire were sung during the three evenings.
I didn’t write the list of songs, but I have to tell you that I really appreciated the memory of Raffaella Carrà.
The medley of Domenico Modugno (Volare author) songs proposed by Gianluca is very beautiful, Gianluca’s interpretations take your heart.
By the way, a detail that you won’t see on TV, when Gianluca started singing the first song: Amara Terra Mia, shortly after the beginning Gianluca stopped the song apologizing to the audience and also to the orchestra because he said he couldn’t hear his voice in the in-ear headphones and so he had the beginning repeated.
The opera aria from TROVATORE is very beautiful and much appreciated: Di Quella Pira L’orrendo Foco , sung by Piero.
Spectacular Ignazio in the interpretation of a Queen song: I Want It All.
But then there were beautiful duets between our guys and also with the guests of the evening including Giorgia, Marco Masini, Noemi, Venditti, Mario Biondi etc.
The evening was co-hosted with the good showgirl Lorella Cuccarini, elegant and nice (she is 60 years old) with whom there was also a brief but nice memory of Blues Brothers and of Grease.
The comic moments were entrusted to Enrico Brignano, who in a short moment went on stage dressed as CAESAR and then introduced the song Nelle Tue Mani from The Gladiator.
In a second, much longer moment, we all laughed with Brignano dressed as Garibaldi and our boys who played three Garibaldians who every time they heard the name “flag” in the speech waved and sang a song dedicated to the flag, truly a hilarious moment!
Another hilarious moment was when the photo of our guys in 80’s style appeared, ah ah ah!!

A very beautiful and really sweet moment was when Ignazio, before presenting his solo ISN’T SHE LOVELY by Stevie Wonder, read a short letter dedicated to Gabriele, what sweet words from the future father, Ignazio.
IGNAZIO= This year I’m going to be a dad. Now I’m going to read a letter, who knows if I’ll be able to finish it and it’s also short.
It says:
My dear son….. (he is excited and fans himself with the paper – applause)
……I don’t know what it will be like to receive the most precious gift that life will give me.
I don’t know what it will be like when I’m too far away to wake you up in the morning and tell you that I LOVE YOU.
I don’t know what it will be like when you take my hand and with your sweet eyes and your sweet voice you call me Dad!! ❤️
(applause – the duet with Alessandra Amoroso begins)

The most touching moment was when they sang Hallelujah dedicating it to Barbara Vitali who passed away a year ago.
The concert lasted 3½ hours and the voices of our Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio were always spectacular, sweet in the tender moments, but strong in the moments of power, always attentive in the duets with the guests so as not to contrast or overshadow the performers, in short always delightful!!
I don’t want to reveal too much about the concert because you will see it from the Canale 5 video.
In the meantime, it has been announced that the first concert will be broadcast on May 19, followed by May 26 and June 2.
However, in the moments preceding the concert, when you understand that you are there and the wait is over, the emotion is sky-high, because you know that you will witness something well done and well performed and then there is also the meeting with the fans that perhaps you only know through the connection with Flight Crew, a meeting between people of different ages, languages, nations but all united by a single love, that for music, or rather, beautiful music!!
And that’s how the Mantua concert was the meeting place for Kristen and her husband Steen from Denmark. ❤️❤️
Jolanta from Poland ❤️
and INA from Germany ❤️
I am very happy to have had the opportunity to meet all of you in person!! 🥰
And now a series of my photos of the concert:
Mantua warmly welcomed Il Volo who was staying right in the historic center of Mantua.
Here are some videos showing the fans waiting for Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca outside their hotel.

Expect three great concerts, there will be a lot to see and hear and we will talk about it in detail.
See you soon: Daniela 🤗

  1. Many thanks, Daniela, for sharing your insights on the concerts in Mantova. I have seen (and shared) many videos from them, but appreciate your commentary. Your story helps personalized the audience appreciation of the evenings’ events. Grazie mille!!

    1. Thanks Eileen, I didn’t want to write much because we will have the opportunity to comment on each passage at length after watching Canale 5.

  2. Thank you for sharing a lovely description and videos, it sounded wonderful.
They put so much into the concerts and really love to please fans in the different types of music.
I thought Ignazio’s letter of words were very moving about his Gabriel.
Hopefully they will have a rest for a while before the next concerts.
    Thank you again
    Fenella

    1. Ignazio’s letter to Gabriele was touching but everything was beautiful, despite the television footage, there was never a stop, even during the commercial breaks our boys entertained us with some speeches or jokes, they are truly great entertainers.

  3. Thank you for this concert description. I always look forward to your thoughts on the concerts you attend. And looking forward to seeing the whole concert on you tube. I have seen them many times in the US, once in Germany and 6 times in Italy and Sicily. Seeing them at home in Italy has always been the most incredible experience. They are always wonderful but They seem to give 120% at home . I am sure all the concerts were wonderful.

    1. Thanks for the nice compliments Janet, you have attended many concerts, but several foreign friends tell me that Italian concerts are different, even if these for Canale 5, as I have already said, reflect more of an Italian taste. However, the three of them have a way that is very popular and I hope that the evenings on Canale 5 are rewarded with great ratings.

      1. The 3 concerts from May 2024 are on YouTube and I have watched each one several times. So I hope the 2025 concerts also appear there. Also I am hoping they return to the beautiful town of Verona snd the Arena. Easy to I get to, lovely city to visit and the historic Arena.

    1. That’s true Gin, but here we will give you the whole video and many nice comments and explanations of the songs that you surely don’t know. Wait for our article, there will be a lot to read!

  4. Great article as always, photos, videos and love them so much !
I hope I get their concerts on YouTube’. Thank you again! The letter Ignazio wrote is beautiful!
    Love Il volo forever ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    1. Unfortunately Linda, entire Canale 5 concerts are often not available on YouTube, but we will do our best to let you see them.

  5. Thanks so much, Daniela, for the great report, photos and videos (and to Pat for putting it together.) I’m so glad you didn’t get rained on this year. It looks like everyone was having so much fun onstage and in the audience. Loved your close-up photos of the three guys individually. It’s really a super treat to hear all the new material from our guys. And I can’t wait to see the Canale 5 videos!!

    1. Judi, you don’t know how happy I was not to have rain on my head, also because at the first concert unfortunately it rained. Anyway late in the evening it was cold, luckily I had two jackets with me and I put them both on, in the sky there was a beautiful full moon, it seemed like it was part of the scenery.

  6. Many thanks to you both! Pat can you please tell us how we can get Canale 5 in the US?
I loved Igna’s letter to his son, so sweet…. Was thinking about him away on tour after Gabriele arrives, it would be so hard😢. I’m sure Michelle will video call him so Papa can sing the little guy to sleep!
Really enjoy the guys all stretching their repertoire, they do it all with such class! Loved all your translations and pictures…..Judy I loved the individual photos too! You really captured each of them Daniela! Thank you too for the dates the concerts will be on Canale 5….and UTUBE?
As always you two are the Best, Carol💖💖💖🎼🎤🎵❤️🤗😘🙏🏻☮️

    1. You’re welcome, Carol! Unless you can get Italian TV stations on your cable service, you’ll have to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network software like I used to do. I used NordVPN and it worked good for the RAI channels. But I had trouble getting Canale 5 to connect. Unfortunately the subscription my son paid for has run out and I don’t know if I really want to pay to renew it. I’m sure it will eventually be on YouTube. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

      1. I have been able to get RAI1 thru the app. But was hoping there was some way to get Canale 5, I’ll have to really put the old brain working hard to remember how I did it last year!! If I succeed I’ll let everyone know!🤗❤️🙏🏻

    2. Carol, as I said before I don’t think that the Canale 5 concerts will be visible on YouTube, there will only be some clips, I hope they publish the whole concert, but let’s not get our hopes up too much, anyway here you will find all the news and also the whole video.
There will be a lot to read about the meaning of the songs chosen and perhaps unknown to you.

      1. You’re correct Daniela, I don’t recognize All the songs! I do enjoy them anyway….. could listen to these guys if they sang in Chinese, they always sound wonderful! Big disappointment on Canale 5 but I’ll be waiting for your next newsletter! I have seen parts on YOUTUBE which helps abit. In the past they have shown all three concerts sometimes blended together! Better than nothing but I’ll be thinking of the guys on each date.
Thanks for all you do my friend! Igna’s letter to his son was sweet but it broke my heart for him to not be there for every moment…..remembering when my own were tiny, never wanted to miss even a second. They change daily and sometimes in an hour! ❤️Carol

  7. Thank you both for the time and effort you put into The Crew. I’ve been watching videos of the concerts for days now. I can’t get enough of them. The guys deserve a long rest and Ignazio needs time with his beautiful wife and son who is expected I believe in September. That was very moving letter to Gabriele, as a grandmother I know how quickly time goes by, so enjoy your son Ignazio, you will be a great Papa.

    1. You’re most welcome, Rose Marie! 😊 I’ve watched several of the videos. Mano a Mano surprised me….I remember them performing it a long time ago.

    2. Rose Marie I too have watched several videos of the evenings I did not attend, but I do not want to spoil the surprise, I am waiting for the whole concert. There were many beautiful interpretations, our boys were great as always with a huge repertoire. There will be a lot to see and comment on.

  8. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in Mantua, so I only gather information from what direct participants publish. Of course, I watched a lot of short published videos and now I’m just impatiently waiting for the recording of the entire concerts. From what I’ve seen so far, I have one prevailing feeling: the guys and their “Tutti per uno” are getting better and better every year. And this year they literally amazed me! Of the three years, this year was the best and I haven’t seen everything yet!! They were absolutely great! And if all the Italian journalists still haven’t understood it, then I have no words for them. There is only one thing I would probably change for next year: returning back to Verona. Mantua is beautiful, elegant, but the Verona Arena can enhance the concert experience much more (I think the audience there has a better overview too).

    1. I agree Iva, as I have already written, Mantua is beautiful but the impact of the Verona Arena is unique.
I still can’t understand how Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca managed to prepare so many different songs from their usual in such a short time. They are truly unique and they demonstrate more and more that they can perform on different music and that the three of them cannot be labeled under just one type of singing. They are very good!!

Wow Margarida they did a full immersion of Il Volo, I believe it was beautiful and we fans can’t get enough of it!!
They were very beautiful concerts and a really unexpected soundcheck and Mantua has its own charm, the aim is also to show the beauties of the less renowned Italian cities but I also hope they return to the Arena.
I hear you are happy with your experience and I am very happy for you!!

Von den alten kamen Granada, Miserere, Caruso, Nelle Tue Mani, My Way, Halleluja.
Als bekennender Gianluca Fan haben mir seine Soli am besten gefallen, allen voran ein Medley mit Amara Terra mia / Vecchio Frac/ Meraviglioso von Domenico Modugno und Starman von David Bowie I Giardini Di Marzo von Luccio Battisti.
Dann Can You Feel The Love Tonight aus König der Löwen,

      .
Ina, it was nice to meet you and then I remembered that you are learning Italian and I said a few words to you in my broken English, ah ah!
Yes, the time travel was a great idea, we can realize that some songs cross all the boundaries of time entering history.
The medley made by Gianluca on Modugno’s songs was beautiful, I especially really appreciated Vecchio Frack (the second one) I have always liked that song and Gianluca sang it exceptionally. By the way, your t-shirt with Gianluca is beautiful!!

Ina, I’ve always really liked Battisti’s I Giardini di Marzo, at the concert, during the song my daughter-in-law’s mother and I were singing it and the cameraman came to film us for a good minute, who knows if they’ll show it!

  11. Thank you Daniela:
It was truly dynamic and exciting. The Guys were fantastic as usual.
    Always, Mary G

    1. Absolutely yes Maria, I only attended one but from what I saw they were exceptional on all three evenings, I had no doubts.

Luz, as you may have already seen on the third night they had an Italian-Spanish presenter and so they sang two Spanish songs with her and I love it when they do these things!!
I agree that everything in them exudes respect and friendship, their messages to the public are always very positive, polite never foul-mouthed, they know how to present themselves in a very polite and pleasant way that we all like and that lately I see appreciated even by young people. They are unique!

  13. I’ve been watching some of the videos from the concerts.
Unbelievable. I can imagine a fan bringing a new person to a concert saying that they won’t believe the voices. It’s shocking how good they can be. I especially like it when Ignazio decides to get serious and color between the lines.
Sorry, that’s just my opinion, but he can be astonishing.

    1. Gail their performances are absolutely incredible, as well as being sung excellently, the three of them move on stage with great mastery and Ignazio is definitely the best in this case and then seeing them you can perceive the message of friendship and respect, they are great!

  14. It was a wonderful evening, or rather a night in a beautiful place with wonderful music. At first I was disappointed that the concerts this year would not take place in Verona but in Mantova, which I knew nothing about. Now, however, I have to say that Palazzo Te and the whole of Mantova enchanted me. I spent three wonderful days there, I attended two concerts, a soundcheck, in the city I was lucky to meet and exchange a few words with Piero’s sister and Mrs. Eleonora Ginoble, pet the lovely Luna. I am also happy that I managed to meet you Daniela and Kirsten with her husband. Yes, it was a special time that will remain a wonderful memory, to which I will certainly return often. Thank you very much Daniela and Pat for this fantastic post, thanks to which I could once again be transported to the beautiful Palazzo Te. Grazie mille😍😘.

    1. I am so jealous you got to meet Luna! Lucky lady to meet Gianluca’s mother and Piero’s sister! Have learned more about this crazy world we live in by following my Italian boys! As I text this I am watching tennis from Rome played by an Italian and a Spaniard! Thanks for sharing. I saw the boys on April 4th for the first time and they were spectacular!

      1. Sheila, I’m also jealous of Jolanta for her matches!!
At the tennis match in Rome there was also Piero and his brother to watch her, they were filmed by the cameras, did you see them??

      2. No I didn’t see them; however I figured Piero would get to see some matches! They were likely on camera when was taking a bathroom brake! The cameras are great finding special guests in the audience!

    2. You’re most welcome, Jolanta! 😊 And I am so glad to got to meet so many people and one precious little Luna on your trip!

    3. Yes Jolanta, Mantua is a really beautiful town and Palazzo Te certainly has its own charm, I also liked the setting but I missed the support of the audience from the stands, when they asked us to sing together. However, I am happy that everything went well for you and that you avoided the first concert with the rain. Of course you were lucky in your meetings, I envy you!! It was nice to be able to meet and greet, we look forward to the next concert!!

  15. “Better late than never” – but I did just return back home from Italy now. My husband and I had converted the concert-fling into a small spring holiday and added a couple of days at the grand North Italian lakes Como and Maggiore and hence took the car for a long spin of some 3500 km (starting out here from Copenhagen, Denmark). Italy is such a beautiful country offering so diverse and magnificent sceneries as well as a wealth of history and culture, so we couldn’t resist the chance to explore it a bit further once we were there.

But – of course – the concert in Mantua was the main target for our trip – and I can only concur with each and all that Daniela so well has written above. There is really very little I can add apart from agreeing that it was an impressive and very great concert! That is, I did likewise only have the opportunity to attend the one on Saturday the 10th. Our guys have certainly turned very professional in all aspects and did once again prove that they capture all musical genres – no matter what they sing it is done to perfection. As Daniela has taken you through the night’s repertoire and list of guest stars, there is no need for me to repeat it – but it was indeed very varied. Ignazio beamed featuring several rock tunes, which according to my humble opinion is likewise where he is strongest. Singing Queen songs he never disappoints! Piero presented an aria that I don’t recall having heard before – and sorry for repeating myself, but he does just get better and better! And it is always a delight to experience him in a duet with a pro opera singer – this time likewise. Only, as a previous ballroom dancer, I must confess that his walzing lacks some tutoring though. I shall be more than happy to offer him a free lesson or two 😉 <3 . Gianluca surprised me with his soli choices that were all new to me – and on the more melancholic side giving him the opportunity to showcase his unique skills of interpreting in depth lyrics. No doubt the French chanson-sounding “Amora Terra Mia” (I understand it is an Italian tune though) proved what an amazing talented singer he is. Personally, I would have preferred to have heard his version of “Can’t you feel the love tonight”, which he sang one of the other nights and more down my line. I do likewise understand, that Ignazio did sing the beautiful ABBA-song “The winner takes it all” one of the other nights. Being Scandinavian I would really have loved to hear it, as I believe his version will be awesome knowing that he loves to challenge himself with high notes in the original key of the songs – and the ABBA girls did most certainly go for the very high ones!

Not understanding a word of Italian I do, of course, miss out of a lot of the jokes and the teasings as well as the comedian fooling around with historic characters such as Garibaldi didn’t ring a bell with me. I was really neither familiar with the Italian guest singers apart from Biondi – but no doubt the Italians loved singing along on the old hit songs. My husband and I did, however, sing at the top of our voices along with Ignazio in his funny Grease gig.

I didn’t know what to expect from the new venue Palazzo Te – but it was a beautiful setting for the concert – not the least due to an amazing and impressive light and video show that used the holes of the arches in a most fascinating way having among others pictures of the frescos and art pieces from the interior of the palace “dance” in the air and on selected spots. Normally, I prefer as little disturbing light shows as possible – but this time it really worked great. One does, however, get a bit disappointed as to the buildings of the palace from the outside – nothing to write home about – you have to get into the museum to experience the grandeur. And as a downside, the seating is flat on the grass making it pretty difficult to get a good sight if placed in the rear of the grounds. The toilet/beverage facilities were rather limited giving long, long queues – and I do believe that technically there were a few problems too as to the sound at times – so in all honesty, albeit a lovely and great evening, I do prefer the setting and facilities of Arena di Verona, I must confess.

As highlighted by Daniela – these big concerts do likewise bring fans from all over the world together. Hence, it was so absolutely a pleasure and delight to meet up again with Daniela and her husband and re-see Jolanda from Polen and my German friends Martina and Isolde as well as to be able to put a face to Ina from Germany, whom I met here for the first time. We are one big international family 🙂

Likewise it was a pleasant surprise to get acquainted with Mantua – a town I had never heard of nor noticed before. What a lovely historic center, where everyone just happens to bump into each other due to the small size. And, therefore, I can copy some of you – as I did likewise get the opportunity to say hello to Gianluca’s parents and – yes – to cuddle little Luna <3 And not just once – while enjoying a drink at the town square the entire Ginoble family (excluding Gianluca) assembled twice just in front of us, so we got a good glimpse of little brother Ernesto as well. At the Grand Hotel just across the square we saw Torpedine outside the entrance (we didn’t wait for the guys to come out though) – and right behind us at the concert wife Michelle and her two brothers were seated. So we had a lot of great sightings too :-).

    Warmest greetings from Kirsten, Denmark

    1. Hi Kirsten after reading your story I feel quite envious, how lovely to see the family of Gianluca and Luna. And then Michele.
And then Italy which I love.
Each of the boys are amazing, singing their own style of genres.
I’m learning Italian so trying hard to understand the words.
Hopefully I will get to see them and experience what you and others have seen etc.
I do watch videos and see on YouTube, although I know it isn’t the same as live.
      Thank you
      Fenella. ( a big fan)

      1. Hi Fenella. Don’t be envious – you shall probably get similar chances another time, I am sure. And in all honesty – watching the show on TV or YouTube, you get much better views as no matter how close you are seated in theatres of the live concerts you have difficulties in watching their facials etc. as the spotlights make them all white and blurred to look at – so often I look more at the wide screens than at them directly. Where are you from? In Europe it is pretty easy to find a city where they perform live – so with a brief and not too costy flight ticket you can easily make it, I find.
        Warmest regards – Kirsten, Denmark

      2. Hi Kirsten
Thank you for your lovely response.
I’m from the Uk London. Yes I thought maybe I could see them somewhere in Europe. They do not seem to come here very often, Which is a shame , I don’t think they get promoted here in the same way as in the US or other cities in Europe.
I only started following the end of 2024. I do watch the videos and YouTube. But would like to see them live just for the experience.
My Italian friend got me into them, she has followed since they were put together in 2009.
Anyway sorry to go on but appreciate your thoughts.
        Thank you.
        Warm regards

    2. Oh, I see we had similar experiences. On Sunday Michelle and her brothers were sitting very close to us, we were in the tenth row and they were in the eighth😊

      1. Yes Jolanta – we were all pretty lucky in this respect this time. Funnily enough, Michelle and her two brothers were likewise in row 8th on Saturday the 10th. Firm seats for them maybe ;-). All the best – hugs – Kirsten

    3. Yes Kirsten, I in turn re-confirm everything you wrote, we had the same impressions of the concert evening.
As for the jokes of the comic sketches and also some presentations, I will try with my translations to explain better and make you understand the dynamics and the laughter.
I must tell you though that I am a little jealous of your “special encounters” that you had walking around Mantua, but I am happy for you!!
See you at the next event.🥰

    1. Hello Ivy. I did try that last year and signed up – but I could still not watch Tutti per Uno – it stated it would not be allowed outside Italy. But I hope you have better luck.

  16. Special performance, funny, acts, Ignazio, Gianluca, and Piero. Each of them present, singing solos, touching, people’s hearts where ever they are. I love IL VOLO they have touched me in so many ways with their music!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
