A Trip of a Lifetime ~ Maria, Madeline, Joan and Deborah

No matter how many times I tried to dissuade them, they went anyway. Without me too!
This story is so awesome that I want to run the entire trip diary, so I broke it into pieces for you.  What a trip!

ITALY

A MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY

a trip

Madeline Vitella and Maria Agostini Leps live about 45 minutes from each other, Maria in PA and Madeline in NJ. Because of their proximity, they were able to meet each other several times during the planning process of this exciting trip. But until the day of departure, none of us had met Joan Brenin or Deborah Georgini Beaupre. On May 9, 2015, everyone finally met.

Here’s our story:

More than 6 months ago, we four grandmas from different parts of the US decided we wanted to go to Italy to see the countries where our beloved young men of Il Volo grew up. It all started as a dream, but with enthusiasm and gusto we began to plan.

The first thing we decided was that we needed a guide and driver so that we would not have to rent a car or be dragging our luggage on and off trains and buses. (Once we saw how they drive in Italy we were so glad we didn’t rent a car!). Through mutual friends we had discovered Sicily Routes, a tour company that advertised personalized tours throughout Sicily. We contacted Ciro Grillo, the owner of Sicily Routes. Ciro was very enthused about our plans and suggested other cities we should visit as well, but we were adamant about what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. As it turned out, Ciro knew exactly what our trip should be like and wanted us to get the most out of our visit. In addition to the towns we had insisted upon, he included some other historical/beautiful/entertaining cities – towns that were famous for certain things and other towns that were just beautiful country. We are so glad we listened to him! We saw so many things we didn’t know existed!

So the plan for Sicily was almost complete. Now, we thought, what do we do about Italy? That’s the very first part of our trip. Well, Ciro to the rescue! He contacted some people he knew in Italy and hooked us up with a tour guide for that portion of our trip. Ciro checked up on our driver at least twice a day to make sure we were getting the most out of our visit.

THE START OF OUR FANTASY TRIP!

May 7, 2015: Joan flew into Philadelphia from FL and Deborah flew to Pisa from TX, by way of Germany.

May 8, 2015: Madeline and Maria finally met Joan in person for the first time at Philadelphia International Airport and the three flew to Rome. Deborah lands in Pisa.

May 9, 2015: Deborah flew from Pisa to Rome where Madeline, Deborah, Maria, and Joan finally met in person to begin the trip of a lifetime!

LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN!

May 9, 2015 – Hotel Cicerone, Rome

Deborah and our guide for the day, Amor, met us when our plane landed in Rome. None of us had ever met Deborah, although we chatted often via messenger and skyped a couple of times. BUT, Deborah was wearing an IL Volo shirt, so we knew it had to be her!!!

From the airport we went to our hotel where we checked in and dropped our luggage then we toured a bit of Rome. Amor took us to Dino and Tony’s for lunch, a restaurant he has been patronizing for many years. We had no menus; they served us whatever they were making for the day. We had appetizers consisting of 2 different kinds of pizza, 3 different salamis, and some fried cheeses. The second course was pasta with pancetta, and another pasta with red sauce; sparkling water and house wine were the drinks. Then they brought out a liqueur, tiramisu, and coffee. The owners were very hospitable and happy to see the 4 Ladies from America, and take pictures with us.
a trip 2After touring Rome for several hours, we went back to our hotel to finally get settled in our rooms and take showers, etc. Later that evening we had dinner at The Blue Grotto, which was across the street from our hotel.

After dinner we took a walk to a tabaccheria for a gift bag for one of the gifts we brought for the ladies of Il Volo, because Madeline wasn’t smart enough to bring it from home! Unfortunately they didn’t have what we were looking for. We did purchase one later on in Sicily.

May 10:

Breakfast at the hotel was a typical Italian breakfast – carbs, carbs, carbs – plus much more! The waiters, Domenico and Sammy, were full of fun and enjoyed talking and taking pictures with us.

Our new guide (for the remainder of our stay on the mainland), Christophe, picked us up at our hotel for our 4 hour tour and we were surprised and pleased that he provided us each with bottled water! We didn’t expect it, but he did so every day that he was with us in Italy. He was from France originally and has lived in Italy for several years. Christophe was dressed in a suit and tie and we said…”oh no!!! It’s too hot…you need to get comfortable when touring with us!!”

Today we toured more of Rome:

  • Bambino Gesu Ospital, the Children’s Hospital that was built in the 7th or 8th Century and where all seriously ill children from all of Europe were brought for medical treatment
  • St Paul’s, the 1st Basilica
  • The Trevi Fountain (which was being refurbished) and the Spanish steps
  • The Mussolini Bldg. and Napoleon’s mother’s apt
  • The Forum
  • We saw the most beautiful panoramic views of Rome – and snow capped mountains in the distance.

We learned that every country in the world has 2 Ambassadors in Italy… one for Rome and one for the Vatican, which is a separate city within Rome.

We toured the Colosseum and the Pantheon. We also saw Circus Maximus, the ancient Roman Chariot Racing stadium; Caesar’s home; and “The Keyhole.” The Keyhole is a door with a small keyhole at eye level; in it you can see 3 cities – Rome, The Vatican, and Malta.

This excursion took approx 3 – 4 hours! When we got back to the car, Christophe told us that Ciro had called to make sure we were being taken care of and that we were enjoying our day!

After touring we went to the hotel and rested a bit until we were ready for dinner. The hotel manager recommended Le Cupole Ristorante Pizzeria, which was a couple of blocks away. He also said they have a specialty – the best Linguine with lobster. Deborah was ready for that. He made the reservation for us, but forgot to ask one thing!! We walked the couple of blocks, were seated and ready to order. We already knew what Deborah was having and of course – lo and behold….no lobster today!!! Deborah was so disappointed, but she made another selection and we had a great dinner!

May 11: Morning

We had tickets for the Vatican tour (which included the Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter’s Basilica). So breathtakingly beautiful! The craftsmanship that has lasted all these years!
a trip 3May 11: Afternoon – Liberty Hotel, Roseto degli Abruzzi

Christophe drove us from Rome to Roseto degli Abruzzi, to The Liberty Hotel for our 3 night stay. What a great ride we had listening to IL Volo musica!! We believe we made Christophe an IL Volo fan now, as he was singing along with the songs…especially Grande Amore!! He was so funny!!

This hotel has beautiful views of the sea and the mountains. A very popular seaside resort town where people from all parts of Europe spend their summer vacations.

We checked into our rooms and got the important WiFi codes then took off for a stroll on the avenue, which is along the beautiful Adriatic Sea.  There are all kinds of clubs here, where we have seen pictures of Gianluca and Erny at the beach many, many times. The clubs are not as you would expect to find in the US. They are basically small shops that serve food and drinks, with tables, chairs, and sofas, and they have chairs and umbrellas on the beach for their guests. It appeared to us that you have to belong to a particular club to use that part of the beach. Our hotel had a section of the beach that provided umbrellas and tables, chairs, etc. The beaches here have pathways to walk on so that you are not walking on the hot sand to get to the water.

Dinner was at La Piccolo RosBurgo. This was a gated restaurant, again, just a few blocks away. When you walked through the gates from the street you walk down a tree-lined path up to the restaurant. As you approach, you see tables and benches outside for dining al fresco, or you can eat inside. We decided to eat outside because it was a beautiful night. We had ARROSTICINI (of course) and pizza. The Arrosticini was delicious, and we wanted more, but after eating the pizza and drinking beer we were all full. We said we would go back another night, as Deborah wanted to see if she could beat Ignazio’s record of 60 that he ate while staying with Gianluca!!!
a trip 6Everyone in Roseto seems to know each other and it appeared that our hotel was a gathering place to watch soccer on TV and more.

Later that evening, Madeline, wearing an Il Volo shirt, was sitting in the lobby of our hotel with Deborah and Joan when someone came in and was talking to the desk clerk. The man mentioned IL Volo to the clerk after he saw Madeline’s shirt. Madeline asked him if he knew IL Volo and he said he did and that he held Gianluca when he was a baby. He said he owns the Bar BereBene and his name was Emiliano. Madeline was so excited; she told him it was on our list of places to go. She and Emiliano exchanged hugs and kisses as the Italians do, and told him we would see him there! Bar BereBene was previously known as Bar Centrale which was owned by Nonno Ernesto!

May 12:

THIS IS A DAY WE WILL NEVER FORGET! IT IS ETCHED IN OUR MINDS AND HEARTS FOREVER!

This was the day that Gianluca and his father, Ercole, came to the Liberty Hotel to meet with us.

Wait until you hear about that!  As soon as I am able to control my jealousy I’ll run part 2. ~Marie

The Trouble Tree ~ Gina

I wish I had the talent for writing then I could have created a soap opera of the daily troubles that come to one during their daily life, but all I can do is forward suggestions of ideas that seem to touch me.

We seem to search for an answer why we are so affected by three young men with “heavenly” voices.

I saw the prose below a few days ago and it hit me that Il Volo in a way is my “Trouble Tree”.

By taking a moment to sit down and listen to their music I get to take time to leave the problems and when I get up and go back to the problem it has greatly diminished.

I am so grateful that three young men decided to try out their luck at a singing competition. That event gave us a great gift.

I am not a ‘gusher’ by nature, but at times something hits me. I and all the people that participate on this site have at times a need for a “Trouble Tree”.

The Minnesota Seven Plus One ~~ Jane (Maryjane)

MN IL VOLO girlsL to R – Suzy, Dorothy, Bonnie, Audrey, Mary B., Allene, Joyce, Jane-hiding behind camera 🙂

The Flight Crew delegation from Minnesota got together again for another day of IL VOLO love and admiration!  Spring has sprung in the north land and we decided it was high time to have some more fun with fellow IL VOLO lovers.  We also had a new member, Audrey, to welcome into the group.  Once again Dorothy made the trek from Florida to join us.   Joyce hosted us in her lovely home.

We indulged ourselves on delicious snacks of Italian Dove Bread, Antipasto tray, Olive Tampenade spread and Garlic spread on crackers and garlic bread sticks with marinara, while sipping on Italian wine.

Joyce had an IL VOLO slide show (with an emphasis on Piero, much to Allene and Mary’s delight) that constantly played on her big screen TV with the Grande Amore CD accompanying it.  It was like being in IL VOLO heaven!  We all marveled at how we could continue watching it over and over and not get tired of it.  Can you imagine??   We played a game of CAPTION THAT PICTURE which always provides many laughs and new takes on familiar photos of the guys we have all seen and dearly love.   Mary had translated each song from Grande Amore into English.  We then had to read specific phrases of a song in English and decide which Italian song it came from.  This proved to be a challenge for many (me) and we were allowed to cheat and confer with each other in order to make it through the game.  Mary passed around a bottle of Piero’s own favorite scent…Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male cologne…for each of us to sample and enjoy for the rest of the day.  And boy did it smell good in that house after that went around the room!  If you closed your eyes you could surely imagine a certain someone standing right there!  Joyce gave us each refrigerator magnets with  favorite photos of the guys to take home and decorate our houses with.  Now if only they could come out with a wallpaper of the guys I’m sure we’d each have a room we would find to put it in!  We ate at Carbone’s for lunch and spent the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company.

Once again, IL VOLO brings love and joy into each and every life of those who know and admire them so.

We are all hoping there will be a IL VOLO Fan Faire in Las Vegas someday so we may ALL meet and share our love of these wonderful guys.

IL VOLO LOVE,

Jane

~~~~~
Hi Marie,  Jane wrote that she had sent you a report of our get together, but had forgotten a couple of things, so here they are: (Mary Bohling)
We are all so excited about Bonnie and Joyce’s trip to Italy to see two concerts—TWO, and one in Taormina.  How lucky can they get?  They told us about the places that they will visit and promised to bring back T-shirts for all.
When we got back to Joyce’s after lunch, Bonnie served a delicious pistachio dessert, in honor of one of Sicily’s major crops.  A crop that is overshadowed by it’s biggest contribution to the world,(?) Piero and Ignazio, but pistachios are nice, too.
Jane started the perfume frenzy with her encounter with Ignazio’s scent transferring to her when she got a hug at the Meet and Greet in Milwaukee….and then she got samples of it on EBay for us, so when Piero’s favorite was revealed, of course we had to have it.  I didn’t know that the bottle would be anatomically correct when I ordered it, but we really didn’t mind at all…and the fragrance is nice, too.
Guess that covers it.
WELCOME
WELCOME
It was all we had hoped for, and more! We are so fortunate to have 4 Flight Crew members who live relatively close (in the same state) and had the joy of meeting one another throughout the last year and a half. As we came off our “summer high” of attending the Milwaukee concert together, it was not long before we knew we needed to do something else IL VOLO related. Just didn’t want to let go of the great times we were having seeing Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio sing…..as well as being together as friends! The whole idea of a “convention” came about quickly and all plans fell into place…as if it was MEANT TO BE.
We were lovingly hosted by Suzy. She had for us a perfect hospitality room for our events. Jane, Allene, and Mary arrived on Friday afternoon, and the four of us got busy setting up pictures, posters, and memorabilia, including scrapbooks of concerts in Detroit, Milwaukee, and the MOA.
Joyce brought a video presentation of her photos from the Elgin concert. There were Beanie Babies with tags saying Minnesota IL VOLO Convention 2014 and framed 4×6 photos of the boys at various times of their careers for everyone to take home.
 We immersed ourselves in IL VOLO music and got things ready for the next day. That job being done we then sat down with a glass of wine and had a great visit.
 These are extraordinary women! We didn’t know each other before meeting on the FLIGHT CREW SITE and have become best of friends. We met Suzy at the MOA and later again at the concert in Milwaukee. Our bond of passion for IL VOLO has bound us all together like old (I mean that in the best sense) friends.
Saturday morning we were joined by Bonnie and Joyce who we hadn’t met before, but being true IL VOLO fanatics, they blended right in and we immediately felt like old friends.
Then came Dorothy, who we had met at the Milwaukee concert. She came ALL THE WAY FROM FLORIDA, and we were so happy to see her again.We thought some fun games would be a great way to celebrate the joy of these three young men in our lives. We played, Pin the mustache on Ignazio.
(poor guy never did end up with a proper looking stach!)…
We also made words from “IL VOLO CONVENTION”, …Scrambled Song Titles, …and we had a hoot of a time writing captions for a group of pictures of the guys in various settings: everything from Gian sunbathing in his speedos to Ignazio grabbing Piero around the neck in Surrender! Lots of fodder for funny comments. Wish we could share them all with you.
We were going to order in lunch, but had set out an amazing array of snacks, furnished by the attendees…
Why on earth would we order out with a feast like that right before us?? We also canceled our dinner reservations at a lovely Italian restaurant as we were too busy still feasting on our own goodies and playing IL VOLO PICTIONARY!!
Dear Laura joined us in the afternoon as we were oohing and aahing over the Buon Natale and Mas Que Amor Special Edition DVD’s (The one with the Mexican girls with the blinking bows in their hair).
Lots of sharing of experiences and thoughts about our guys. Jane wowed us all with her game prizes that included (the now famous) samples of that heavenly cologne Iganzio was wearing at the Milwaukee Meet and Greet…the one that permeated her shirt until it wafted away overnight. Leave it to Jane to find those cute little sample sizes on Ebay!
We looked at pictures and enjoyed a trifold of photos called, “Do you remember when—?” The board of photos were depicting way back to when Gianluca won THE contest when they were young, all the way up to when they were showing off their manly chests at the gym. We agreed that while they all looked pretty manly, Ignazio won hands down for the MANLIEST. Jane had prepared signs for us to offer a very special TOAST wishing our lovely Board ladies a Happy First Anniversary of the site!
We had a ball playing IL VOLO PICTIONARY. Jane had prepared topics that were hilarious, and we cracked up trying to figure out the drawings. The hit was Laura’s depiction of NUTELLA, which showed a stick figure Gian stuffing his mouth with black scribbles and a drawing of Mr. Peanut. Hard to believe that it took us so long to figure that out, but Suzy finally got it. We laughed until our faces ached over that game.
Finally it was time to call it a night (or so we thought). While Jane and Allene drove Laura home, Mary thought it was bed time…but no, the party wasn’t over yet! After Allene and I returned, here came Suzy in her PJ’s with a bottle of “Chocolate wine”. So, of course, we had to toast the Flight Crew Board once again! Then it really was time for lights out and good night to the convention. It was such a great success, and we are already looking forward to our next get together—not as fancy as this convention, but we will definitely be spending more time together soon—all agreed to that. Bonnie and Joyce said they will come from Shoreview and Dorothy will come all the way from Florida when we just say the word.
It was with heavy hearts and tears and hugs that Suzy, Jane, Allene and Mary said good-by (I mean Caio) today. But thanks to email and the FLIGHT CREW SITE we will be communicating regularly and planning our next get together, which will be not too far away.
I don’t think Piero, Gianluca or Ignazio will ever be able to fully comprehend the incredible impact their lives have had on so many others. They are truly shining lights in this troubled world. We are all better people, friends, for having known them in our lives. Their song “WE ARE LOVE” sums it up so beautifully for them. Thank you dear guys for being you!
