MUSIC FOR DREAMING by Daniela

We all know that on June 5 Il Volo will make a tribute event in memory of the great composer Ennio Morricone, who died in July 2020 at the age of 91.
But are we sure we know who Ennio Morricone was and what were his compositions?

Black and white photo of Ennio Morricone at the piano

Surely Morricone’s fame is due to his compositions for filmography, which includes more than 70 award-winning films.
We recall only some of these films, which have music that certainly remained in our memory:
THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, of which I propose this beautiful video recorded in Venice in 2007 with an orchestra directed by Ennio Morricone himself.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, very beautiful and poignant.

Theme that we heard sung in Sanremo with so much sweetness and emotion by Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca: YOUR LOVE ❤
THE  UNTOUCHABLES
THE EXORCIST
ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA

Naturally you will have recognized the sweet E PIÙ TI PENSO, and so let’s listen to a small piece performed by very young Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio directed by Maestro Morricone.
How sweet they are and what a skill.

MISSION TO MARS
MISSION of which we listen to the beautiful “Gabriel’s Oboe” which Gianluca likes so much and which I hope will include in the program of the event.

SACCO & VANZETTI including the theme “Here’s to You” sung by the good Joan Baez, and which I now propose to you in a choral performance directed by Morricone.

CINEMA PARADISO
THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS
THE HATEFUL EIGHT…….and many others.
Ennio Morricone was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In 2016 Morricone had sold more than 70 million records worldwide.
His successes include three Grammy Awards, three Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, ten David di Donatello, eleven Nastro d’Argento, two European Film Awards, the Golden Lion Honorary Award and the Polar Music Prize in 2010.

Close up of Ennio Moricone as he directs an orchestra

Much of his success is due to the columns of western films, in particular the films of Sergio Leone (Italian director and his schoolmate), several of these films are played by Clint Eastwood, who will remain a good friend of Morricone and who in 2007 will deliver to him the Academy Honorary Award.

How much emotion in Morricone who speaks slowly so as not to allow the tears to fall, I admit that I was moved by watching this video.
Surely you have recognized on the balcony of the theater, Quincy Jones, his good friend, and next to him, Maria, Morricone’s beloved wife, to which he dedicates the award.

Ennio Morricone with is wife, Maria

But Morricone is not only film music, it also has a “minor” production – but “minor” only for the role that the “small” and “light” songs have always played in relation to other music, the “heavy” ones. “ it’s big”. Ennio Morricone began working at the end of the fifties as an arranger, and put his signature on many juke-box songs conquering new audiences of young people.
Among these we certainly remember IL MONDO, which we are used to hearing from the beautiful voice of IL VOLO that I propose live in a video of LA SHOWCASE, but how small they were. 😘

The composer’s genius is found in the use of various orchestral instruments, considered “unusual” such as the oboe, to which Morricone gives a lot of importance. He also used the most unusual instruments: the harmonica, the whistles, the snap of the whips, the trumpet, the screams, just to name a few. In addition, in the 40s he will also be a good jazz trumpeter, in short, an all-round artist.

Black and white photo of Ennio Morricone playing the trumpet

Morricone also wrote many sacred music and many classical music and also an opera and a mass, in short, a multifaceted artist.
In 2016, he received his only competitive Academy Award for the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and will once again dedicate the award to his wife Maria.

The power of Morricone’s music is that it does not stop at the barriers imposed by the various musical styles.
His music “Ecstasy of Gold”, was used by the heavy metal band Metallica at the opening of their concerts.

In the television series The Sopranos, they played “Man with the Harmonica” taken from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, and which in the following video I propose played by the rock band MUSE.

Even the cartoon, The Simpsons, paid homage to Morricone using the music of the Cinema Paradiso theme.

Dolce & Gabbana, like many others, used Morricone’s music for their commercials.
In 1977 Morricone composed the official theme for the 1978 Fifa World Cup, which was held in Argentina.  🇦🇷

But who was Ennio Morricone in private life?
A very humble and simple man, very respectful of the rules and schedules, in an almost military way.
Used to getting the most out of himself.
One great love, his wife Maria.

“A moment of distraction, and she had an accident while driving her father’s car. They put the cast on her from the neck to the waist, as was done then. She was in great pain. I stayed close to her. And so, day by day, drop by drop, I made her fall in love.”
Ennio and Maria got married and had 4 children: Marco and Andrea, who followed in the footsteps of their father, Alessandra, and finally Giovanni, screenwriter and director. I also believe that the eldest girl in the photo below is not their daughter.

Black and white photo of Ennio Morricone with his wife and children

At his side for over 60 years, his beloved wife Maria accompanied him in all his goals and in his dark periods, advising and supporting him in his artistic production by actively participating, like any self-respecting soulmate.
“While I was composing she was sacrificing herself for our children. For fifty years we saw little: either I was with the orchestra or I was closed in my studio composing.”
And this great love of his, he will remember until the end.
Upon his death, Ennio Morricone left a posthumous letter, of which I translate the content:

Photo of Ennio Morricone along with a photo of his posthumous letter to be read after his death

ENNIO MORRICONE is dead.

This is how I announce it to all the friends who have always been close to me and also to those who are a little distant, whom I greet with great affection. Impossible to name them all.

But a particular memory is for Peppuccio and Roberta, fraternal friends very present in these last years of our life.

There is only one reason that drives me to greet everyone like this and to have a private funeral: I do not want to disturb.

I greet with great affection Ines, Laura, Sara, Enzo and Norbert, for sharing most of my life with me and my family.

I want to remember with love my sisters Adriana, Maria, Franca and their loved ones and let them know how much I loved them.

A full, intense and profound greeting to my children Marco, Alessandra, Andrea, Giovanni, my daughter-in-law Monica, and to my grandchildren Francesca, Valentina, Francesco and Luca. I hope they understand how much I loved them.

Lastly Maria (but not last). To her I renew the extraordinary love that has kept us together and that I am sorry to abandon. To you the most painful farewell.

Ennio Morricone and son, Andrea

His son Andrea, will direct Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca in the concert-tribute in Rome, on June 5th, the date should be certain, however nothing is yet known about the participation of the people, but if he is admitted, I will do everything to be present and keep you updated.
In any case, it has already been said that Italian and American televisions will be present at the event, so everything will be well recorded and proposed.

On the left Andrea Morricone - on the right IL VOLO

And now let’s enjoy this magnificent performance of E PIÙ TI PENSO, from the voices of Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio .

Now we know Ennio Morricone a little better – composer and man, a truly exceptional artist. So we understand well why Il Volo wants to try their hands at this great tribute, to pay homage to a composer of unforgettable music that creates emotions and makes the heart vibrate.
Surely Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, with their splendid voices will be able to make the most of Morricone’s music and songs.
There will be guests with whom to make duets and a large orchestra and choir, and what about the magnificent Piazza San Pietro that will be the background?
It will be magnificent, unforgettable and we will all be witnesses of this event.
Time goes by and our guys are getting ready for the best, I can’t wait !!

Sanremo ~ A Tribute but, to Whom? by Susan

If Sanremo was meant to be a tribute to Ennio Morricone it certainly didn’t turn out that way.
When the guys walked out on stage it was to do a tribute to Ennio Morricone but, when they walked off the stage, they had given the most amazing tribute to Vito Boschetto.
Ennio
I can’t even imagine how they got through that very touching song. So appropriate! If Ignazio wanted to tell his father how he felt, he certainly couldn’t have said it better than with that song.
You could feel the emotion! You could feel the support for Ignazio!  Many times, Ignazio had to hold back tears but, so did Gianluca! If ever there was a question of how these guys feel about each other, the question was answered at Sanremo. True brothers!

Isn’t it fitting that they began their wonderful journey on the Ariston stage and, they showed their true love for each other on that same stage? These three, amazing, young men poured out their hearts for the love of Vito.  And Gianluca and Piero showed their love for Ignazio in their support for him in one of the most difficult times in his life. These guys are so strong for one another!
Ignazio is a, true, showmen! He knew the show must go on! And he knew that’s how his father would want it to be! No question this was a very difficult decision for Ignazio to make but, he knew there was only one answer. Yes, the show must go on! And when it did it was with such dignity, that it left us all speechless. Every performance they give is exceptional but when it’s also emotional it goes to another level.  I don’t know about the rest of you but, I was in tears.

We have to remember these young men have been together for 11 years and so have their families. So, the loss goes beyond Ignazio because Gianluca and Piero are also his family. They were teenagers when they came together and, they are used to having each other’s parents traveling with them. They traveled for very long periods of time with Mr. Boschetto. He was a part of the Il Volo family so it’s only natural that they are also feeling the loss.

Vito you will be missed by your family but, you will also be missed by your Il Volo family with whom you shared many wonderful moments! And, the Il Volo fans, will miss you too!

Ignazio you made your father very proud. His love will always shine in your heart!

Your Love (Once Upon A Time In The West)

Ennio Morricone

I woke and you were there
Beside me in the night
You touched me and calmed my fear
Turned darkness into light

I woke and saw you there
Beside me as before
My heart leapt to find you near
To feel you close once more
To feel your love once more

Your strength has made me strong
Though life tore us apart
And now when the night seems long
Your love shines in my heart
Your love shines in my heart

YOUR LOVE – SANREMO 2021 by Daniela

Despite the sad event that hit the Boschetto family, IL VOLO confirmed its presence in Sanremo.
It will certainly not be easy for our boys, and in particular, obviously for Ignazio, the sad loss is so close.

The various Italian newspapers have given the news, and I propose to you this one from Il Quotidiano.net

SANREMO 2021: Unforgettable Morricone. The song of Il Volo for dad Vito.

On stage at the Festival for dad Vito, who would have liked to hear him once again on that stage. After a short illness, Ignazio Boschetto’s father from Il Volo died last Sunday in Bologna, but tonight the trio will still be on the stage of the Ariston with his homage to Morricone, under the orchestral direction of his son Andrea, to collect the (virtual) applause of the publication of  this 71st edition.
Due to the Coronavirus, this year the Sanremo Festival will take place without an audience and with strict controls at the entrance of the singers in the theater. Inside, an uncontaminated environment has been created that must be kept as such by everyone. Before entering, each singer will have to measure their fever, have a mask and show a badge that will declare the result of the swab (test) performed.
And here Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca on their arrival at the Ariston theater.

IL VOLO arriving at the Ariston Theater – Click Here

MAN = Il Volo is coming, immediately the line to you!
WOMAN = Exactly, you can see live the controls of Il Volo, which at this moment are detecting the body temperature and then there is the screening of their pass.
(Piero and Gianluca arrive)
Temperature ok? You also have the negative test of course.
MAN= Can you give Ignazio a greeting and a hug from me?
PIERO = Here he is.
WOMAN = Ignazio is coming too, obviously we need to do the checks.
PIERO = (Ignazio arrives) They greet you from the study.
IGNAZIO = Hello
WOMAN = (to Ignazio) A hug from Alberto (man)
MAN = A hug to you three, are you excited for tonight?
PIERO = A lot, a lot. We are very excited.
GIANLUCA = It will be an honor for us to be able to pay homage to the greatest composer and artist, perhaps of all time, the great maestro Ennio Morricone, therefore, we will give our best.
WOMAN = I can say that in here they can take off the mask.
PIERO = But ……
WOMAN = You prefer to keep it, ok!
MAN = Let’s have a big “good luck” we look forward to Il Volo tonight on the Sanremo stage.
Guys, I hug you, hello Ignazio, my friend! See you tonight. (It is evident that the man sent messages of affection and closeness to Ignazio).
We are all in great expectation, we want to hear and see our dear guys, especially after all the bad times they are going through, especially for Ignazio and his family.
The tribute to Maestro Morricone began with a solo by the trumpeter, Nello Salza, who performed “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” and the musical performance of the orchestra which, led by Morricone’s son, Andrea, performed “Metti una sera a cena” (Put a night in dinner).
And here we are at their moment, I had great tension and emotion in listening, they deeply moved me, they performed YOUR LOVE, taken from the film “Once Upon a Time in the West”.
MAGNIFICENT!
Chills on the skin, pure emotion.
Amazing how Gianluca first, and then Piero, touch Ignazio to instill their closeness.
Ignazio starts the song by singing with his eyes closed and at the end of it he wipes his eyes. ❤
Incredible voices!

But here’s what was said.
AMADEUS = And now YOUR LOVE, which will see the extraordinary participation of IL Volo.
(the song begins, Andrea Morricone conducts the orchestra)
AMADEUS = Il Volo in Sanremo 2021.
I put myself between you so I give you a microphone to speak.
Thank you guys for being here, not only obviously from the Morricone family, but from the whole audience of the festival, even in an obviously difficult moment (he puts his hand on Ignazio’s shoulder to make it clear that it is a difficult moment for Ignazio ).
We are happy that you are here.
GIANLUCA + PIERO = Thank you.
IGNAZIO = Grazie mille.
AMADEUS = You are three much loved boys.
This evening is a special evening, because it is also the evening of the Italian voices that make Italian music known in the world, before you here there was , Laura Pausini, now you, and I think this is a satisfaction, also a pride, a considerable responsibility.
IGNAZIO=  It has always been our goal, since the first day we walked this stage, because we were born on this stage (Ti lascio una canzone)
AMADEUS = Let’s take a step forward and go in front of the microphones.
IGNAZIO = For us this evening was a great emotion, because for us Maestro Morricone means a lot, he is a symbol of Italy in the world, and for us to be able to remember him, to be able to start this project on this stage, with the great maestro Andrea Morricone it is an honor. (Andrea sends a kiss)
AMADEUS = There is a project that you rightly remember, on June 21 (maybe it’s a mistake because it’s June 5) you are planning a great concert dedicated to master Morricone, right?
PIERO = That’s right, we are working on this recording project, dedicated entirely to maestro Ennio Morricone, and we wanted to thank maestro Andrea Morricone and all his family, for their trust and support in this project we are working on.
AMADEUS = It’s Il Volo’s tribute.
GIANLUCA = Yes, it is a very accurate choice of songs, because we will sing soundtracks in both English and Italian from Once Upon a Time in America, to Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. We can’t wait to start this new journey, thank you very much again. (addressed to Maestro Andrea Morricone)

AMADEUS = And it will be yet another journey that will lead them to appreciate the music, in this case of Maestro Morricone, all over the world, as always. When there is Il Volo this happens. Il Volo in Sanremo. Thanks guys, thanks.
G + I + P = Thanks, see you soon.
AMADEUS = Thanks to maestro Andrea Morricone, thanks.

It was a great performance, the voices were wonderful, they touched me deeply.
I seemed to sense deep emotion also in Gianluca, Ignazio very tight and tired, Piero emotionally the strongest.

Always impeccable and suitable for various occasions.

After the performance, they went to a side room  for an interviewed by Rai Radio2 and the critic Gastaldo, who always gave them very low marks in Sanremo where they were as competitors.
I don’t translate everything, because they are already known, but this time Gastaldo tipped his hat to pay homage to the master Morricone. Then Il Volo confirmed the June event saying that there will also be televisions from America and Japan to televise the event. Finally they said that their CD entirely dedicated to Morricone will be released and that they hope to return to America towards the end of 2022.

The comments of some newspapers, of which I give you a brief overview..

IL MESSAGGERO

Now the three tenors represent an Italian pride in the world, and in this capacity they are guests at the 71st Italian song festival. So much emotion during their performance, a performance that certainly represented for the three also a dedication to Ignazio’s father, who died too soon. Strong the warmth of the social networks to surround them during the performance: many appreciate the decision not to give up their expected participation in the Ariston, a presence that, given the conditions, deeply moved the fans and the whole audience.

ANSA.IT

After the emotion of Laura Pausini, the Sanremo Festival takes off on the notes of Ennio Morricone. The homage to the maestro is entrusted to the trumpeter Nello Salza, who plays the theme of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, to his son Andrea Morricone who conducts the orchestra in “Metti una sera a cena” (Put a night in dinner), to the voices of Volo , in a preview of the concert event, scheduled for June, ‘Il Volo tribute to Ennio Morricone’.
“I am happy that you are here, even if in a very difficult moment – says Amadeus, ideally clinging to Ignazio Boschetto who has just lost his father – in an evening dedicated to the great Italian music in the world”.

Left to right: Gianluca, Ignazion and Piero on the Ariston stage

OF HER

IL Volo – Ennio Morricone is great, we love him, and Il Volo proves to be up to par in paying homage to him. Conducting the Sanremo orchestra is the son of the great master and the emotion is great. Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble give us one of the most exciting moments of the second evening of Sanremo 2021.

Left to right: Gianluca, Ignazion and Piero singing on the Ariston stage

And finally a comment from the critic Monina, who has always spoken ill of our boys, but did not know them.
During Sanremo 2019 he met them and changed his mind, on them, on their skill.
Here’s what he wrote about them.
IL VOLO – voted a 9 rating
Now, I don’t think I am exactly the best person to point out that in the world the Italian music that is recognized as such is not that of Pausini, but that which has its roots in our remote past, which flirts with the arias, which marries important melodies, the Bel Canto, to put it in a couple of words that summarize what there is to be summarized. But so much so, and it is quite clear to many that in the world these three boys have made their way precisely by virtue of their being solidly good and equally solidly healthy carriers of those instances that see us as Verdi’s children, Puccini but also di Caruso and so on. I am not the most suitable person, because I usually deal with other things, but I believe that this truth must be recognized once and for all, and today more than ever. They were good at paying homage to the maestro Morricone, but more than anything else they are good and that’s it.  (how to say they are indisputably good)

Left to right: Gianluca, host Amadeus, Ignazion and Piero on the Ariston stage

Ok, there were some nice comments, but honestly, after such a beautiful and exciting performance, I expected a lot more from the Italian press, luckily, someone, like Monina, is recognizing their artistic value.
It doesn’t matter guys, people are with you, we all recognize your value, your indisputable skill, your great elegance and professionalism, for having been there despite everything.
The audience, ordinary and non-ordinary people, bow to you and are proud of you.
The road ahead of you is not easy, it never has been, but you have always shown us that you can overcome obstacles, with strength, will, hard work.
Keep it up, we love you. ❤️❤️❤️

IL VOLO AGAIN IN SANREMO!! by Daniela

What did I write to you a week ago, concluding the post of “On the road to Sanremo”? That Il Volo would return to Sanremo again, both as a guest and as a competitor ………….. and in fact, the news is yesterday.

Il Volo will be a guest on March 3 in Sanremo.

Left to right: Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero in the recording studio. Piero is holding a guitar.

This is the official news given by Il Volo.
We are pleased and honored to inform you that Wednesday 3 March we will be guests at the Sanremo Festival!
We will perform on the Ariston stage with a tribute to Ennio Morricone, a small preview of the great concert that will take place in June.
The Festival Orchestra will be conducted exceptionally by Andrea Morricone, the son of the great Maestro.
We want to thank Amadeus (host of Sanremo 2021) for inviting us, it will be a beautiful and emotional performance that we can’t wait to participate in!

Left to right: Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero in suits

And here is what the newspaper LA REPUBBLICA writes.

LA REPUBBLICA article – Click Here

Il Volo returns to Sanremo. After the victory in 2015 with Grande Amore and the podium in 2019 with Musica che resta, the trio will be guests of the second evening of the Festival, Wednesday 3 March. Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble will take the stage of the Ariston with an exciting performance in homage to Ennio Morricone accompanied by the orchestra of the Sanremo Festival which for the occasion will be directed by the son of the master, Andrea Morricone. The three artists will retrace the melodies of the musician, composer and author of the most beautiful soundtracks of Italian and world cinema, awarded with an Oscar.
This performance, the second at Ariston as guests, will be a preview of the concert-event of the Flight to be held in June 2021, an overwhelming journey into the art of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century entitled Il Volo tribute to Ennio Morricone which will also be the title of the new album which will be released worldwide for Sony Music by the end of 2021.

Left to right: Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca in leather jackets

So, the various photos in the recording room concern the new CD which will be with Morricone’s music.
Furthermore, also in the schedule of RAI 1, the Il Volo Tribute event for Morricone is confirmed on June 5.

I think it will be a fantastic project.

Gianluca in the recording studio seated in front of a control panel

Piero in the recording studio seated in front of a control panel

Gianluca at the recording studioseated in front of a microphone

And so here we are again in Sanremo, where I am sure, you will bewitch us once again.

We are so proud of the event you are preparing and the photos that come to us show that you are fully and personally involved in this project. You are now men capable of making your decisions for better or for worse.

And we will support you, waiting with trepidation for this new work which, I’m sure, will be beautiful.

See you very soon:  Daniela

IL VOLO – PORTA A PORTA 2021 by Daniela

Yesterday afternoon Gianluca posted this short message:

This evening we will celebrate 25 years of PORTA A PORTA and there will be a surprise for you.

Stay Tuned!

The whole fanbase immediately repeated the message, but what was it about?
Perhaps a small old video re-proposed by Porta a Porta.
For too long we have not seen Il Volo guest at Porta a Porta, we really liked the old episodes where a lot of space had been given to Il Volo.
So this was a big surprise !!
The wait was long, the short connection with Il Volo took place immediately after midnight.

Here is the video !!

G+P+I= Hi Bruno.
P = Happy birthday. We could not miss this important anniversary.
I = It’s already 25 years of Porta a Porta, we are a little like peers.
G = Yes, we can say that we are Bruno’s age.
P = But peers of what?
I = Our age together makes Bruno’s age.
G = Peers of the program.
I = Yes, of course. Together with you we have had wonderful experiences, like the one in New York. (short video of Il Volo in New York with Bruno Vespa)
I = The walk in Central Park.
G = Dinner with Woody Allen.
I = But the best thing was seeing you come down from the hotel room in overalls.
P = For jogging.
G = We can say we took a nice jog in Central Park with Bruno Vespa.
I = Now we are in the studio, we are working.
G = We are preparing a very beautiful thing which is a tribute to maestro Ennio Morricone.
P = Guys, what do you say if we move to the recording studio?
G = Exactly, we move to the recording studio, because we want to give you a small taste of what this musical project will be, precisely the tribute to the great master Morricone, with all his melodies sung and we leave you a small taste of a medley of C’ERA UNA VOLTA IN AMERICA and MALENA, a song called E PIÙ TI PENSO.
Besides Bruno, you are already invited to our concert on June 5th in Piazza San Pietro. (the performance of the song begins, with piano accompaniment)
I = The master Claudio Vignali
P = Bruno we promise that we will be present at the 50th anniversary of Porta a Porta.
G = A big hug Bruno, a greeting to everyone.
G + I + P = Ciao, ciao.

It was short but intense.
A beautiful and intimate performance of E PIÙ TI PENSO, and the confirmation that Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca are preparing everything for the event of early June, although there are no total certainties, but they are practicing the songs, preparing the voices and as always they will surprise us.
