WORLD TOUR: TAORMINA by Daniela

After the brief summer break, the long Italian outdoor tour resumes with a concert in beautiful Sicily—specifically:

August 22/23   TAORMINA

The concert took place at the Ancient Theatre.
Taormina is a highly sought-after destination for Il Volo concerts, firstly because two of the members (Ignazio and Piero) are at home in Sicily, but also because it was one of the places that hosted them when they were not yet widely popular in Italy. Furthermore, despite its small size, Taormina is a favorite among concertgoers, offering a magnificent ancient theater with a stunning view of the sea and Mount Etna in the background. Known as the “Pearl of the Ionian,” Taormina was also recently singled out by *The Times* for its beauty.
But let’s take a look at the concert. Look at the beautiful video Il Volo has posted.

BRUCIA LA TERRA (Theme from The Godfather – Piero)

The guitarist performing the song is Edo Ferragamo. He posted about his meeting with Piero on his Facebook page, a truly wonderful experience, and I am sharing it here in his own words.
2 hours notice. A borrowed guitar from a restaurant. A song I had never played before. 5,000 people.
What started with a question from Piero Barone, Il Volo over lunch — “Do you want to play with us tonight?” turned into one of those moments I’ll never forget.
A couple hours later I was walking on stage at the Teatro Antico di Taormina to play The Godfather with Il Volo .. and we got a standing ovation. 💗
Thank you, Il Volo for having me, and especially Piero for trusting me enough to throw me into the deep end. 😂 💗 Grateful for the trust, the adrenaline, and a night that reminded me why I love doing this. I’ll never forget this moment … But see you again tonight for round 2.  🎸
Edo Ferragamo’s wife posted these words and this video clip of second night with electric guitar.
“The most special 2 nights watching my husband perform with Il Volo at the Teatro Antico in Taormina.
Still can’t believe what I witnessed… the incredible @barone_piero singing the Godfather song IN SICILY, a 30 piece orchestra, with Edo on Spanish guitar… a style he had never played before, on a guitar borrowed from the restaurant down the street, after learning the song just two hours before soundcheck!!
I will never forget how epic these nights were… could not be more proud of you Edo Ferragamo bravissimo!!”

Shortly after the Taormina concerts, this wonderful news arrived:

2026 Gioia Award: honorary citizenship for Gianluca Ginoble of “Il Volo” and awards recognizing excellence in culture and journalism.

Gioia dei Marsi (a municipality in the province of L’Aquila) is preparing for its most brilliant night. The “” (Gioia Award) returns for its third edition; it is the year’s most anticipated civic and cultural event, organized by the Gioia dei Marsi municipal administration—led by Mayor Gianluca Alfonsi—and curated by De Siena Editore.
It is an occasion that celebrates the excellence, roots, and pride of an entire community, set against the evocative backdrop of Piazza della Repubblica.
The day’s events will begin on Wednesday, August 26, at 5:30 PM in the Town Hall’s Council Chamber with an extraordinary meeting of the City Council for the most moving moment of all: the conferral of honorary citizenship upon Gianluca, the internationally renowned artist from the group *Il Volo*, has always maintained a deep, affectionate bond with the Abruzzo region and his own roots.
Following this, at 9:00 PM in Piazza della Repubblica, the award presentation ceremony and the accompanying concert will take place.
The Premio Gioia 2026 will be awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves at a national level in the fields of journalism, culture, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship.
And so, the two beautiful concerts in Taormina have come to an end. It was wonderful, what a shame not to be there, with our guys in top form, accompanied by their families and surrounded by so much love from the audience. The natural setting was stunning; all in all, two unforgettable evenings.
Piero’s Sicilian version of *The Godfather* was superb!
It also looks to me like Ignazio has lost a few kilos and is in better shape.
Congratulations to Gianluca on the award he received.

TAORMINA REVIEW by Janet Dong and Mary Minton

First time I was in Taormina, maybe 20 years ago when my Mission Dolores choir did a singing/concert tour through Italy and Taormina. I do not remember which church we sang in, but many, many people came and we loved it.
Taormina is still beautiful and the theater is historic and perfect for a concert. My husband and I had 7th row seats one night and seats on the stone steps the second night.

The concert was magical from both places. Our guys were relaxed, funny, sweet and the singing was magnifico. The night was warm and a full moon rose over the theater.
Igna’s solo, “All By Myself”, was so emotional and well done it brought tears and a standing ovation.
Piero sang an aria I had not heard him sing before and it was beautiful. I hope he sings this on the US tour.
The audience seemed to feel connected to them and repeatedly called their individual names, called out greetings from places like Marsala and one woman sort of stopped the second night show calling for a selfie with Igna, and he posed as she came down from her seat for the photo.
This theater and stage are much smaller than the Arena in Verona and it felt more intimate. Near the end of the concert The audience was allowed to stand along the edge of the stage to hopefully touch the guy’s hands as they passed by, and they reached down to touch the hands of many fans. A love fest between these 3 wonderful artists and their fans.
Around town:

We saw GG up close in the restaurant. First he and Eleanora walked by the two tables of fans visiting from afar and he greeted us with “ciao” then he was eating with his parents, Barbara, Michele, Giampiero and their drummer. All sitting casually in a corner of a sidewalk cafe not being bothered by anyone.

Then a nice conversation with Barbara and Michele as they sat near the theater watching the audience go in. Barbara was so sweet and willing to converse for a minute.
Then I saw Piero having lunch with friends the day after both concerts. I wanted a picture but did not want to interrupt his privacy. So we just walked on. But he and the others and the crew mingle with the public and the public respects their privacy it seems.
Then I met and chatted with Dario twice at Bam Bar.

They are all such nice real people who just blend in with us common people. That is why we love them.

My husband and I attended both concerts in Taormina. We looked forward to them with great anticipation since we purchased the tickets two and a half years ago!
An added bonus was that Gianluca and his girlfriend were on the same plane as us flying from Rome to Catania!
The first night we had tickets in the fourth row at the incredible Teatro Antico and met Jeanette and Deborah there.

It was amazing to be up close and the guys did not disappoint. They sang all the same songs as in Verona with the exception of a new one by Piero. There were standing ovations for almost every song. I particularly enjoyed the new songs from the tribute to Ennio Morricone. The guys came into the audience during “Here’s To You” which was a thrill for everyone.

The second night we got tickets for further back so that we could also enjoy the scenery as Mt. Etna was steaming and the lava was flowing in the background. It was also better to get a view of the whole stage and the incredible lighting. During the Hallelujah song everyone had their phones lit up and there was also a full moon to add to the beautiful atmosphere. Visiting Taormina to attend these concerts is something I will never forget, it was a wonderful experience!
