ARENA 2024 WHAT A CONCERT by Daniela

As I told you, I was in the Arena in Verona for the Il Volo concert “Tutti per uno” on the evening of May 11th.
To say that it was a MAGNIFICENT concert is truly an understatement, because everything was beautiful and well prepared.

What can we say about the stage and sets?

Stunning, an alternation of lights, colors, images appropriate to the songs!!!
What can we say about the excellent orchestra of 54 elements, the excellent members of the choir positioned on two sides and the fantastic conducting of the friendly Maestro Rota?
What can we say about the numerous but spectacular guests who took turns with our guys?
What about the choice of songs, all beautiful and representative?
What about the fantastic Arena, an enchanting place, packed with a participating, cheering and collaborative audience, who illuminated the Arena with thousands of lights and sang at the top of their lungs?
And finally what to say about our three musketeers, our fantastic ones
PIERO
IGNAZIO
GIANLUCA
from their wonderful voices, their mastery on stage, their sympathy, kindness, humility and strength, they force themselves to perform in concert on TV recording without “downtime”, with numerous guests, different songs, different rhythms…… ….Priceless. Attending one of their concerts is a wonderful event, and……….a small but important note, this year it didn’t rain!!!
I realize that the first three concerts in the Arena, which have also been recorded and will be broadcast as early as May 14th  by Canale 5, are designed for Italian TV, and therefore the dialogues are in Italian and the guests are known here in Italy, but the foreign audience present still appreciated it a lot and the Italian audience sang and rejoiced listening to beautiful Italian songs that are sometimes forgotten and which have triggered beautiful memories in each of us.
I didn’t make videos, because the three evenings will certainly be broadcast in excellent quality by Canale 5 and I will show them to you and translate the speeches so you too will be able to understand better, I only took some photos with my cell phone but the resolution is certainly not good, but we will have time to put better videos and photos and we will talk a lot about these concerts. This time I am attaching some videos made by my friend Francesca Brazzale who I thank very much.
Know that the emotion of our three boys was palpable.
The start of the evening was amazing, they started by singing the beautiful song from the film GLADIATOR, how exciting: “NELLE TUE MANI”.

I don’t know exactly how the three concerts will be edited by Canale 5, but I can tell you that during the one I attended, it was nice to see Piero and Gianluca join their mothers in the Arena and give them a kiss and it was sweet to listen to the beautiful words dedicated by Ignazio to his deceased father.
In the next video I propose the duet with Irama also contained in the new CD Ad Astra: SATURNO E VENERE.

My husband and I had seats in the fifth row on the far left looking at the stage and I must say that they were not bad seats at all. Near us on the first steps were Torpedine, Barbara, Michelle, Ernesto and his father Ercole who I was able to meet personally that evening.
At a certain point in Capolavoro, Gianluca came to sing right on the stage in front of where we were and we could all see that he was very emotional, to the point of tears.
The last video I propose for this little roundup is LA VITA (LIFE), a beautiful song with very important words.

And here is the roundup of my photos which, as I told you, are not very beautiful, but they are mine and we will certainly have time to see some beautiful ones.
It goes without saying that the Arena is also the ideal place for meetings between fans.
Even though my husband and I arrived at the last moment because we couldn’t find free parking for the car, I was able to say hello to Kirsten and her husband from Denmark, Laura and Ugo from Trieste, Judith from Canada, Susan and her brother from Chicago, too bad I didn’t see Jolanta from Poland then I have know Martina Gerlach-Bunz from Germany, and even if these brief hugs and greetings fill our hearts, this is yet another power of Il Volo, that of bringing together people of different cultures in the name of music.
In this photo: me, my husband Beppe, Kirsten Langer and her husband Steen.
And what about our amazing loving boys??
May 12th was the birthday of Michele Torpedine who was turning 72 years old and during the rehearsals, Ignazio conducted all the orchestral members and choristers and everyone wished Michele a happy birthday, these three were truly UNIQUE!!!
Surely Michele Torpedine will have been happy!

AUGURI TORPEDINE!! 🎂🍾🍾🥰

I don’t want to say anything else so as not to spoil the various surprises that you will be able to see during the three evenings of television.
Meanwhile, Canale 5 has broadcast this nice promo which anticipates the broadcast of the concerts.
I conclude with this beautiful comment published by my journalist friend Antonella Esposito who was present at the concert, never more beautiful words to express what an Il Volo concert is!!
Il Volo: “Tutti per uno” is not a simple concert, it is a multiplayer show in which all the pieces intersect creating the intermittent vision of a body in a periodic way. From the lighting system, to the stage scaffolding, through the graphic mood, up to the perfection of the fluidly diffused and never aggressive sound, everything is there and in the right place.
There is the setting of the Arena, there are guests, many of them.
There is charisma, the different color of voices and character, there is lightness, solemnity, memory.
There is the history of music of which it is a full part.

ARE YOU READY TO SEE THE FIRST ENTIRE CONCERT?
SEE YOU SOON!!

  1. Daniela, your photos were perfect! I hope the concert is taped and we can see it on you tube somewhere for the US folks!

    Grazie mille per semiprecious!

    Jana

    1. Thanks Jana, I will definitely be able to show you the entire concert. In a few hours however, I will see the first evening on TV, a concert which I did not participate in and therefore I am equally excited. 😍

  2. Daniela, I was so happy for you, the others in the audience, and the guys when I saw you had a beautiful evening this time! I’ve been watching snippets on Instagram and some full songs on Youtube (magnificent, as you said) but there’s nothing like getting your first-hand, enthusiastic and eloquent report. Cute photo of you four, and I agree with Jana that your show photos are just fine. Can’t wait to see the whole performance!

    1. Judi, as soon as you see the TV recording you will be able to fully enjoy the beauty of those concerts, but you certainly can’t imagine how much we in the audience sang… fabulous!!

  3. What a start! Theme from The Gladiator. A huge rendition by our three huge voices. You connect the fans to the concert with your excellent descriptions and photos.Thank you xxxx

    1. Hazel, when I heard the first notes of Gladiator, I was very excited, an amazing start!! Each evening they started differently, but knowing nothing about the guests and the songs, it was a nice surprise every time.

Thanks for the compliments Marie Claire, and stay with us, there will be a lot to read about these beautiful concerts!

  5. Daniela you have me scarcely able to contain my excitement for this concert appearing YouTube! Last year’s concerts introduced me to new, to me talent, like Irama, Pooh, Belinda and lastly Annalisa. Where was I that I missed out hearing these songs and voices before? There is one other voice that apparently is loved by the mostly Italian audience but I’ve only just begun my search for her.
That’s another thing about Il Volo, they lovingly share the stage with popular voices of the era! During one of these moments of last year’s concerts there is a segment where the guys are singing what appears to me to be an Anthem from another era that is still a much loved song. There were older ladies in that audience raising their phones flashlights and waving them while passionately singing the song. I don’t know the song but it spoke to me of what Il Volo had accomplished. It was, for me, after watching and rewatching the concert a seminal moment. At that moment it seemed clear to me that the mission of Il Volo was to bring all ages together through music. I’m 80, and still love the pre-rap era music. Whether U2, or their ilk rock music speaks to me. Just as clearly as has Bocelli, the Tenors, and their ilk.
Impatiently awaiting the new concerts coming to YouTube and the moments you describe here.💗

    1. So very happy you and your husband were able to join the thousands at the Arena to enjoy this incredible concert! It most be breathtaking for them to sing in such an electric atmosphere with so many thousands of people watching them, singing with you and the lights, like a million stars! Seeing them so loved by everyone attending took my breath away! Is this the largest arena that they perform in? It was like a gigantic party! I’m determined to get there next Spring and be a part of the joy! ILVOLO has truly arrived to sell out 3 shows and a partial….60,000+ fans!!
Thank you for this…..can Canale5 be seen on Mediasetinfinaty? If not I’ll be watching on YOUTUBE again!
As always with love and gratitude to you and Pat, Carol🩷🤗😘🙏🏻🎶🎤🎵🎼💖💖💖☮️🕊️

      1. Carol, I’ll answer you right away so you can adjust. It can be seen on Mediaset Infinity and starts at 9.40 am (Italian time).
If you have this possibility I wish you Happy Vision! 🥰

    2. Muriel, in this concert you will discover many songs that have marked various periods and various ages and even completely different genres, let’s say that Il Volo has satisfied everyone and has proven to always hold its own against different types of music, from pop to rock to classical, not least the latest songs from Ad Astra, all very well done.

Luz I have to say that a concert seen in the Arena is certainly fantastic, it’s the whole thing that becomes UNIQUE.
I’m really lucky to live near Verona.
What about those three treasures, powerful voices and infinite emotions.
As soon as you all have the opportunity to see the entire concert you will understand what I’m talking about.

  7. Love your descriptions of these concerts , it’s almost as if I’m there with you.

    1. Rosina, I always try to take you with me and I will soon explain many little things that you might not understand at first.

Ursula I honestly don’t know if your Kirsten is the same Kirsten who is in our group, but I just sent her a message and we’ll find out soon. She is still here in Italy now.

    2. Hallo Ursula

      Hello Ursula
I read your message and Daniela contacted me to ask if you and I perhaps knew each other from our childhood. Honestly I don’t think so, because when I was 13 years old there was no internet, no computers and no message boards… I was born in 1949. And I never liked Helmuth Lotti – rather the other way around. Kirsten is an old Danish historical name that many baptized when I was born – although it is no longer used as often today. My last name Langer is a common German name, but rare in Denmark. There are only two branches that bear the same thing – but it belongs to my husband’s family and my maiden name was Moeller. As you can see, the likelihood that we knew each other and wrote to each other when I was just 13 years old is unlikely. But thanks for asking. PS: If you would like to find out more about me, you are welcome to browse my Facebook profile, where you will find my entire life listed in the timeline.
      Kind regards – Kirsten

  9. I was also there!!! I would have loved meeting you.. but who knows, another time..
About the concert and the boys?? Nothing mire to say.. MERAVIGLIOSI!! I love them with all my heart! As we all do

    1. Denisa, I would have met you with great pleasure for a quick greeting, these meetings are always nice.
      They were fantastic!

  10. Thank you for such a great post and photos Daniela. I hope to see them one day, they are fabulous ❤️🇦🇺🎉🎶

  11. I heard Gianluca say there is an already filmed concert of the newest music from our boys to be shown on PBS in Canada.I can not find a word about this and believe this I have SEARCHED everywhere for info and nothing shows up.Perhaps you might know something???

    1. Suzanne, I heard that in June they should film a special for PBS in Egypt, I don’t know anything else for now.

  12. Does anyone one know the reason for Gianluca being so upset ..was it the emotional culmination of all their work or maybe a much more personal thing … thanks so much for your rundown of their magnificent show 😊❤️

    1. Bev, Gianluca is simply a very emotional boy, he himself said that when he looks at his grandfather he doesn’t hold back his emotion and in these moments it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the events.

  13. Ladies, thanks as always for sending this out to us. I read everything and then went back to the videos. I only got as far as Nelli Tui Mani and it hit me really hard. I can’t see to write because I’m still crying.
    Magnificent!!

    1. Gail, that song moves me so much and that evening when it started I thought I was privileged to listen to it live!

      1. My problem is the flashing lights, which are a problem for migraine sufferers. I just watched a video of Ad Astra and knew I couldn’t tolerate it in person.
I’ll just have to depend on you talented and ambitious women to bring me there since I can’t go myself.

  14. Thank you Daniela. It’s so enjoyable to hear from someone who was there. The three videos were wonderful. I loved the song from the Gladiator. I can’t wait to see the full concerts.

    1. Cathy, last night was the first concert on TV, I’ll send you the video and translation as soon as I can.

  15. I can only imagine what a dream it would have been to be at any of the three concerts at the Arena Verona – what a wonderful experience for you Daniela & meeting up with wonderful friends there – a great pic of you Hubby & friends – the concert you were at Daniela looked amazing – the atmosphere must have been electric!! – I laughed at Ignazio conducting the Orchestra & everyone in the Arena singing “Happy Birthday” to Michelle – very nice!! – a classy initial opening at the concert with Piero – Ignazio & Gianluca singing that beautiful piece “Gladiator” – wow!! is all I can say – I appreciate you & Pat for the stunning work you do in writing & uploading these time-consuming editorials because we would not see anything down here in Australia or New Zealand if it wasn’t for you – Pat & Susan – of course – we do have YouTube which great – but it is a privilege reading your write-ups & the fans as well – have a great week – much love.

    1. Jude, everything is as you described, beautiful event I witnessed, but I will send you all the details soon.
I believe that Torpedine is deeply attached to these guys and they to him.

      1. I know you are correct about Michele Torpedine – he must be quite a guy!! – so looking forward to more of your details – thanks Daniela

    2. Thank you, Jude, for your compliments. We all try our best to bring you the news of IL VOLO. I am so happy that you are happy! 😁 We would not know what the guys were saying if it weren’t for Daniela’s translations. She’s the best!

      1. That must be the understatement of the year Pat!! – referring to you girls trying your best – you are stunning!!

  16. Thank you Pat and Daniela for sharing the videos, photos and your experience at this wonderful concert in Verona. It was a magnificent opening in a beautiful setting. I can’t begin to imagine how wonderful it is to see them in Verona singing all these beautiful songs. I would love to see them perform there. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more of the concerts. It’s the next best thing to being there!

    1. Margaret, everything was splendid and important, you will evaluate for yourself when there is the television video that I will forward to you.
A concert in the Arena is always a great event and hearing the beautiful voices of Ignazio Piero and Gianluca there is priceless.

  17. Thank you Daniela…..those two words don’t really express how much I appreciate your time and love you put into your stories ❤️. I have watched copious numbers of clips by various people, however I must learn too many can confuse me! I think these shows are not concerts but extravaganza’s or showcases! The orchestras, the backgrounds are out of this world! I can’t imagine how many cities/towns will have venues to accommodate such humongous shows??
Having said that and I hope I won’t be misunderstood, often I found it difficult to actually see the boys. I could hear their voices but not their bodies!
Earlier I saw a comment asking why Gianluca was sad and tearful? I was tearful with adrenal and excitement, especially with the powerful drums beating loudly! I think Gianluca was filled with emotions the day had finally arrived the dreamed concert was a reality !
God Bless Il Volo and looking forward to seeing you in 2025 🥰❤️

    1. Sheila, the various clips don’t do full justice to what I saw live. Surely the TV footage will be impeccable and I will try to tell you what the video doesn’t explain or has been cut.
Gianluca had several emotional moments, but the other two were no less emotional.

  18. Daniela, I love your articles on the boys and thank you so much for all of your translations!
I would love to hear Ignacio’s letter to his father. Will you be translating that for us?

    1. Thanks Donna, compliments are always nice.
I will definitely translate Ignazio’s beautiful words to his father!

  19. Thank you again, Daniela and Pat for this wonderful concert description. I wish I could have been there, and met you in person, like we had planned to do last year, but couldn’t – at that rainy, wet concert, that nobody will ever forget. I also was at the second one, too. Your pictures and videos were great and brought back memories of both of the “Tutti per uno” concerts of 2023 that my daughter and I so enjoyed. Were they the first ones of the Tutti per uno “series”? Maybe we’ll meet another year, in Italy, at an Il Volo concert, for sure. Thank you for these reports, but I know, they’re a labor of love, and I really appreciate that you do that.

    1. Maija, besides the bad weather last year, I regret not being able to say goodbye to you, but I sincerely hope there will be another opportunity.
This year the concert was wonderful as was the weather.

Yes Margherita, Eleonora is certainly very proud of Piero but, as you will have understood, also very reluctant to show her affection to everyone. It also broke my heart to see Piero look for her mother and give her a kiss, it’s certainly not an attitude of all artists, but our boys are special.

  21. Thank you Daniela ,that concert looked amazing with the different scenery behind them ,the boys sung fantastic as usual and it was lovely to see Piero mum there he must have been thrilled she was there ,regards

    1. Certainly Pamela, the families of our boys were present and gave support. While Piero kissed his mother, Gianluca did the same, it was nice to see them so affectionate.

In, I’m so glad you enjoyed the concerts. Surely the editing on TV will be different from what you saw, in fact they told me that there were various comical moments which will instead alternate in two different TV dates. I certainly agree with you in stating that the sound, the scenes, the orchestra, everything was pleasant and well done, in addition to our three splendid boys, the amateur videos absolutely do not do it justice.

  23. thank you, thank all of you for another wonderful article. Every night I go on youtube to see what is new with the guys so I have seen a lot of clips. Loved your picture Daniela and have to admit I can’t wait to see the concert in whole on you tube. Just watching the clips has me teary. I read that Gianluca was so emotional because of the duet he did with an admired singer of his. These guys have to be the most talented in the world as they can sing anything and to perform the three concerts that they did is simply amazing. Waiting patiently to see when they are coming back to the U.S. in 2025 and pray that Florida is on the list. Thanks again to all of you for a great job. Always waiting anxiously for your articles. You guys are the best!!!

    1. And I Beverly can’t wait to show you the whole concert and make you understand what was said. I always thank you for your nice compliments.

  24. Absolutely WONDERFUL!! Daniela and Pat!! 😊😊😊 If I ever get the opportunity to see them again, I’ll get up off my deathbed to do it!!!

Gianluca’s voice has matured so much over the years that he was spectacular singing the theme from Gladiator. Piero shares no surprises and does what he does best, always. And, our Ignazio never, ever, disappoints. Even to conducting the orchestra for Michelle’s birthday wish!

What a Concert it must have been and so glad you were there to see it. Your friend, Francesca Brazzale, provided really great videos, too. Thanks again! Many hugs to you and Pat, Dol.

    1. You’re welcome, Dolores! 😊 I agree with you about Gianluca’s voice and also Ignazio and Piero’s voices. My, how they have changed! 😍

    2. It’s true Dolores, the concert was magnificent and you will see it yourself.
Francesca Brazzale has made many excellent videos and I think I will use them to document the fourth concert that is not broadcast by Canale 5, a concert where there are no guests, but only them: Il Volo!

  25. Yes Daniela, it was incredibile, magnificent, unforgetable and much, much more concert. You had a great neighbourhood. We were also very lucky. Right in front of us Mrs. Eleonora Ginoble, in our row Piero’s parents and some friends or members of the families who I don’t know, but the boys especially Gianluca greeted warmly. And the most important thing, every time the boys went out to the audience, they passed very close to us😍🥰🤩. So thank you Daniela and Pat for this beautiful post, which reminds me these wonderful moments.

    1. Jolanta, what a shame I couldn’t meet you. Wonderful concert, but I have to tell you that I saw you in one of the videos, with Piero passing by you and you holding out your hand. I’ll look for it and send it to you!

  26. I agree that the lights and the images were the most spectacular that I have ever seen at any concert! Of course I love our guys and their phenomenal voices but, the lighting effect also took my breath away! Thank you!

    1. I also agree with you, Kathy. The images behind the guys were fabulous! I loved the rocket behind Gianluca when he sang Rocketman. 😍 And I was stunned by the swirling graphic I saw in one clip behind the guys as they were finishing Nessun Dorma. It was perfectly timed to “explode” at the peak of the ending. Wow!! 😁 I just kept thinking to myself………look how far our guys have come in all these years…….in their maturity and the technology that accompanies their concerts. Just mind blowing! That is why we love them! 😊💗

  27. Thank you so much for sharing your insight to this wonderful concert. For those of us not in attendance, you were able to transport us there is ease. The ‘boys”, as always, continue to perform at their very best and share their talents with us mere mortals. I can only hope that the speculation of them touring in North America in 2025 bears fruit to our starving souls here. Thank you again!

    1. Thanks for the nice compliments Eileen, and don’t worry they will come to you soon too and there will certainly be many concert dates!!

  28. Hello, Hello, Hello – better late than never – but I have just a few days ago returned from my Italy holiday and haven’t been able to catch up before.

And yes I was there with my hubby and had the great pleasure of meeting up with Daniela again and enjoying this magic concert with her – and some 15.000 other Il Volo fans. I can only totally agree with all Daniela has been writing and posting – it was a fantastic evening in many aspects. Above you have been discussing the concert in details so there is not much I can add. Arena di Verona is an awesome venue that adds tremendously to the event. The stage set-up with all its lights, colors and special effects was grandiose and perfect for a huge modern TV production – albeit personally I can do without most of it as I prefer our guys in more simple settings in order to fully enjoy them rather than a spectacular light show – but what we experienced was elegant and in some situations magical hence not interfering in any way or stealing the attention. A full symphonic orchestra plus, plus and a 20 person choir added to the grandness of this concert leaving no corners cut. And the guys shined and were like little kids on their favorite playground. And looking good in their – individual – but all black tux-like outfits and normal hair dos they were a delight to watch and of course listen to.

I was surprised to find truly many new songs never heard before – both together and soli – boy, have they ever been busy learning this new repertoire plus the songs with which they duetted with their guests! Unfortunately, concert programs are not available so I am actually not able to tell you what songs they were singing – and in fact neither the names of their guests! I trust, however, that Daniela will get that in place when tonight this particular show is broadcasted by Canale 5, so she will probably be able to tell us in her next post. I did recognize I.e. Gianluca singing “Elinor Rigby” by Beatles – a rather untraditional song not the least as to the lyrics which are actually very sad. Near the end Ignazio sang a lovely salsa-samba like tune that I hope we will hear him sing many times in the future, as it was a glad and fresh tune to which one could hardly sit still. Once again Piero seemed to be the winner of the standing ovations presenting several operatic arias more of which we have heard before – but he just gets better and better.

These Canale 5 specials feature a number of local Italian artists with whom our guys duets. This time I was prepared so it was all ok with me – but in all honesty being a foreigner and not understanding a word of Italian – it is the least interesting part of the show and at times a bit boring… Apart from Irama and a tall man with a hat, who were both participating last year, none of the other artists were known to me or rang a bell. Apparently they were, however, very popular with the Italian audience who sang happily along and seemed to enjoy these performances very much too. But, of course, it is always interesting to hear and experience our guys in new situations as well.

One can only be in awe of these Arena di Verona concerts – they are spectacular in all aspects and touches all of your senses. It is a very emotional experience – not just for the audience – apparently also for the participants. As it had been mentioned in the above conversations Gianluca seemed to be very touched and couldn’t hold back his feelings. I can confirm this as it happened just in front of my eyes – in the middle of “Capolavoro”. He came happily to the left stage extension singing “Capolavoro” urgent the audience to sing along. Suddenly he stood totally still, bowed a bit towards the audience and then closed his eyes while tears ran down his cheeks. I was totally confused – what happens? – but later I realized that he must have been suddenly emotionally overwhelmed noticing some 15.000 people singing along and sending love to the stage to him and his colleagues in this awesome setting. Luckily it was a very short incident and few seconds later he was jumping happily and smiling up and down “conducting” the audience. But watching him lick up the salty tears and seeing his wet cheek in the spotlight hit me strongly and went straight to my heart. I wish I could have rushed to the stage and hugged him. I believe, however, it was happy tears. But it made it very clear to me that I was not watching 3 robots or AI-constructed figured but rather 3 very human persons of flesh and blood and not the least genuine feelings.

Enough from me. I cannot wait to see and read the translations from this show in Daniela’s next story.
    Warmest regards – Kirsten 🇩🇰

    1. Yes Kirsten, you remember everything very well and what can I say, Gianluca’s emotion moved everyone, it was clear that he was overwhelmed by the warmth of the people singing in the Arena and the tears were a mixture of joy and relief for the results of hard work . The song that Ignazio sang at the end is a song by Stevie Wonder, he is a fan of Stevie W. however you will read more in the next post which will be published shortly. You were right to repost the first concert on the post too.
Last thing, I must absolutely recognize that Canale 5 did everything “big” for our beloved Il Volo!!

  29. I loved your words, Kirsten! I was thinking the same….about the production, about the songs and about Gianluca’s emotional moment. I knew the minute I saw it that he was overwhelmed and awed by all those people singing their song! Can you imagine? Wow! I got emotional too. Ignazio and Piero also had many moments that touched me. Our guys are just the best! 😊💕

    1. Thank you Pat. I guess I’ve posted a bit too late on this thread – should I copy/paste it to the latest article by Daniela in order for people to see it? Love – Kirsten

  30. Thank you for writing my feelings Il Volo, the way you convey emotion in the purest form was incredible, a great connection with so much compassion on stage defies the boundary of imagination. I was totally floored!!

    1. Nati, what beautiful words you wrote, what you perceived was perceived by most of us, it wasn’t a simple concert, it was much more!

  31. Daniela,
I know this is a silly question but I would like to be dressed appropriately for the Il Volo concert in Pompeii in July. I’m arriving from America the morning of the concert and I don’t want to look like the tourist that I am. What do Italian women wear to Il Volo concerts outside at night?
    Grazie!
    Filomena
