Introducing Flight Crew’s New Contributor: Jo Ann!

Ciao!

I had the pleasure of discovering Jo Ann, when she answered my plea and so graciously offered her room to share at The Palms in Vegas!  We were so excited to meet each other after several long phone calls.  Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to Vegas, but she did, which she will tell us about in a future post.  🙂   Of course I am always on the hunt for new recruits, so I asked if she’d be interested, and she said yes!  She speaks, Italian and Sicilian, as well as English and hales from the Denver area.  She will be working with Daniela in sharing some of the workload on the various translations, etc.  So, Igna and Piero, you have no more secrets!  Now, if she could pick up some Abruzese, well, the guys would have no secrets at all!  🙂  Welcome aboard to the crazy Flight Crew, Jo Ann!  Without further ado, here she is!

By Giovanna

Ciao a tutti!  Since this is my first time writing for the Flight Crew, let me introduce myself.  I grew up as Giovanna Singer di Marchione in New Jersey.  I answer to Giovanna, Yochanah, or Jo Ann, depending on what country I’m in.

Guarigione a Distanza: Long-Distance Healing

Nine or so years ago, my mother and son, watching a film clip on television, shouted across the house for me to come out of my office and hear something.  I know my mother was really affected by it, because she was joking with me in Sicilian dialect “Giovanna, veni ca, e tale!”  (“Jo Ann, come here and look!”).  My mother hadn’t spoken Sicilian in 25 years, due to depressive illness and traumatic memories, and I despaired of my son ever hearing her speak it with me.  I ran into the room in time to hear one of three boys, ‘nu ragazzinu (a young guy) with eyeglasses stretching “ma na-a-a-a-a-tu sole” into an 8-beat measure.  I was dumbstruck at the smooth richness in such a young voice, in a teen my son’s age.  I also couldn’t believe the “cioccolato fondente” (molten dark chocolate) baritone coming out of the smallest one, or the powerful vibrato from the tall one.

Up to that moment I was frustrated that Mama had abandoned her past.  This was a woman who grew up singing with Tommy DeVito and Frankie Vallie (of the 4 Seasons), whose own mother sang in the chorus at La Scala in Milano.  Her cousin, Lou Monte, sang Italian fun songs on the Ed Sullivan Show, after he re-recorded “Hello Dolly” silly-style with Louis Armstrong, where even Satchmo did a verse in Italiano.  (I can tell what generation any reader is if they used to watch the Ed Sullivan show, or remember Louis as “Satchmo”).  I don’t remember what was the TV show or clip where Mama saw and heard Il Volo.  I only know that it triggered something good in Mama’s memory.   For the last years of my mother’s life, we read Sicilian joke books, spoke and sang Sicilian and Italian, and immersed my son in the pride of where we came from.  I have Piero, Gianluca, and Ignazio to thank for that, although we’ve never met and I didn’t even know who they were yet.

Eventually I figured it out, but it took a few years.  I was running around the world on engineering projects, and they don’t have much bel canto music in Zambia, Zimbabwe, the mining towns of Slovakia, or the mine camps of upper Saskatchewan.

Il Volo Parte:  The Flight Takes Off

A birthday hiking trip in Toscana, Italia in late 2015 started changing things.  Stepping out of my hotel the first morning in Firenze, I noticed a poster with the name “Il Volo,” (which was probably an ad for a CD or something).  The name struck me funny, since I was standing outside the Santa Maria Novella train station, not the airport!   I took a good look, and recognized one of the young men in the photo, the one in the eyeglasses, which were no longer red.  The tallest one now had a

striking young man’s face and an earring, and lost his round cheeks.  The youngest one was starting to look like a matinee idol.  My second thought was, “They had spectacular voices even as young teens.  I wonder what they sound like now?”  My first thought was “Italian boys really grow up well, don’t they?”  The answer to what they sound like came quickly.  The guys had won San Remo earlier that year, so the radios in some of the negozi in Firenza, Pienza, Volterra, and Volpaia, played “Grande Amore,” occasionally.  That was my Benvenuti in Toscana: my Welcome to Tuscany, Il Volo style.

Ecco Che Arrive Il Bello (Here Comes the Funny Part)

Back in Colorado the following autumn, I got irritated at a friend who kept calling me to turn on the TV and watch PBS while I was trying to take a nap after a long workout.  I finally gave in.  There were the three faces from the poster, now in tuxedoes with even more stellar voices, shaking the Piazza di Santa Croce with Maestro Placido Domingo.  That did it!  No mistaking who they were now.  This time I got irritated that I had been in that piazza six months too soon.

But I already derived great pleasure from Il Volo’s music even before I ever went to my first concert.  These three boys always seem to be associated with good things happening in my family.  I will always keep the warm memory of my son (a

drummer and baritone) and his sweetheart Anya (a soprano), eating dinner Italian style al fresco on my deck, announcing their engagement to me to the background music of Il Volo’s recording of “L’Amore Si Muove.”

When I took my third or fourth trip to Italy, my first to Sicily, in 2018 I was frustrated that due to the needs of one of our group, we scheduled the trip so we reached Taormina just a few days after the Il Volo concert there was over.  It was

obvious, though, that Il Volo’s presence in the Italian press had expanded since 2015, mostly for the better.  They were on covers and center spreads in magazines in many of the edicole (newsstands), on the coffee table magazines in my hotel, the CD displays in the music store.  Buon per loro! (Good for them!)

Next time:  Finalmente!  At long last, I attend my first Il Volo concert.  I decided my first should, of course, be in Italy, where the guys harass each other in Italian and everyone knows all the lyrics . . .

A Special Treat from our Favorite Marie!

Ciao a tutti!  I challenged Marie to come out of semi-retirement and write something for us.  I figured she was getting bored looking at palm trees, sunshine and sandy beaches!  This is what she quipped… 🙂   Jana

Something’s Wrong With Me ~ Marie Crider

With the world in a sad and humbled state right now I thought you might like a little something on the lighter side:

~I just listened to an hour interview. It was all in Italian. I don’t understand Italian.

~I can’t lay in the sun without humming “O Sole Mio.”

~I go to concerts with a camera on my lap, but I’m afraid to use it in case I miss something.

~When in the front row at a concert and a security guy walks in front of me I want to shout, “How dare you come between me and THEM!?”  What does he think I might do, jump up on the stage?  Ok…I might jump on the stage, but I’ve got Leelee, my concert buddy, holding me down.  Oh, I could get past security anyway.  He doesn’t have a club big enough to pry me off Ignazio’s leg.

~All Il Volo CDs in my car are copies of the originals. Just in case someone should steal my car.

~When St. Mark’s Basilica started flooding, I panicked. I wanted to book a flight, grab a bucket and go.

~Piero neglected to ask me if he could change the color of his glasses.  (I may never get over that one.)

~The only pictures on my dresser are my Mom, my Dad and Gianluca.

~I have a strong urge to confess to the murder of someone named Delilah. Just to keep the heat off the Boys.

~I want to stand on a balcony in Italy and sing my heart out.  It wouldn’t matter that I can’t leave my hotel room…the air is Italian and that’s good enough for me.

~I have 17 Il Volo t-shirts (actually 16 plus one nightshirt thanks to Jana) but I can’t wear them. Cause…well, what if one should get a stain on it… or fade…or get lost with luggage at an airport…or destroyed by a rabid dog…or snagged on a barbed wire fence? Makes me sick thinking about the horrible things that could possibly happen to one of them.

~I have “Il Volo” tattooed on my left ankle and an “Il Volo” license plate on my car.

Yep, something is definitely wrong with me.  I may need professional help.

~Marie

Grazie Mille, Marie, for sharing your thoughts with us and coming out of semi-retirement!  I’m sure we all feel the same in many ways!  But, just one question, why is Gianluca on your dresser and not Ignazio??  🙂

FRIENDS: THANKS TO IL VOLO

One of the things that have always amazed me, being a volover, is the wonderful friendship that is formed between us fans of IL VOLO from all over the world, because as I have always said “IL VOLO, builds bridges of friendship”.

My meetings started before the concert, in fact, on September 20th in the morning. I went to the Brescia train station to meet Jeannette Giglio and Deborah Georgini Beaupre.

They stopped in Brescia until the following day.

Friends 01

We had the whole day available, and so I took them to see my city, Brescia.

Friends 02

Friends 03

Friends 04

They walked a lot, so I took them to their hotel to rest and in the evening we met for a dinner together.

The next day, being a beautiful day, I decided to take them to visit Lake Iseo, which is very close to Brescia.

Friends 05

Friends 06

Here, too, they walked a lot, but they are two fantastic women, full of energy, it was really nice and fun to be with them.

Then I took them back to the station, where they would take the train to Bologna, we would see each other at the concert !!

️🎤️ 🎶 ️🎤 ️🎶 ️🎤 ️🎶 ️🎤 ️🎶 ️🎤 ️🎶 ️🎤

And here we are at the day of the concert. Everyone lined up for the soundcheck, and here’s who I met:

Wang Xinjie, remember, the sweet Chinese lady who followed them to Capri when they recorded “A CHI MI DICE”, sweet Xinjie.

Friends 07

Then I immediately saw Alicja from Poland, impossible not to notice her, she is a tornado !!

Friends 08

Then Ann Marie Prior called me, with whom I exchanged some news while I was in the queue.

Friends 09

I have been very pleased to see Susan Tafanelli and her brother Robert. We did not take a picture together so I published below the one of two years ago at the Arena, when we met.

Friends 10

Then I met, with great pleasure from the beautiful Greece, two beautiful ladies: Fofi Saratsioti and Katerina Tsaousi, and from the U.S., Joanie Greenspan and Wendy Campbell, too bad I didn’t take the picture with them all.

Then I met the dear, dear friend with whom I shared many translations: RoseMarie Paliobeis.

Friends 11

And then I also met Janet Dong and her husband, very enthusiastic about Italy.

Friends 12

And here, gathered, the trio : Jeannette, Deborah and I … what a night guys, an incredible concert!

Friends 13

At the souncheck I was supposed to meet Jana and her friend Lorna, but they only came for the concert and there was too much confusion there so we didn’t see each other, but we already had an appointment for the next day in Desenzano, on Lake Garda.

Friends 14

And indeed here we are the next day, RoseMarie, Jana and me.

It was nice to meet, we had lunch together and walked along the lake. The difference in language has been overcome and we have understood each other for better or worse, and it was beautiful.

Friends 15

Naturally I also met many Italian friends, whom I knew only thanks to the comments we exchange almost every day.

I never thought I could make these beautiful friendships from one end of the world to the other, and all this was possible thanks to the love that unites us in our admiration for Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio.

Thanks IL VOLO !!! ❤️❤️❤️

POLAND, MUSICA TOUR 21, REVIEW BY ALICJA

And it was also the turn of the beautiful Poland.

The boys were greeted with so much love, the Polish public was very warm, and our guys gave them, the maximum, as always.

POLAND 01

But here is a nice video made by Prestige, which proposes some beautiful moments of the concert.

Alicja, was present at the concert.

She sent me her review and some beautiful photos and videos that I will now publish so that everyone can enjoy them.

POLAND 02

I’m still trilling after the Saturday concert, so please excuse my very emotional words. The concert was fantastic, magical, pure passion with much laud and enthusiasm from the audience. Our boys started from a beautiful classic aria, “NESSUN DORMA” from Turandot, which was very warm welcomed by all of us. Of “IL MONDO” – pure magic, of course Ignazio was showing off with his high notes and Piero encouraged him to sing even higher.

POLAND 03

The Polish fan club prepared shiny sticks to all the fans, we turned them on when “Il Mondo” was performed – the whole audience was a lightning bolt with the colors white, red and green – flags of Italy (red, white, green) and Poland (white and red). Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca were very surprised and happy I think. I was in the front row and I saw their faces very well. Yes, they were happy. 🤗❤️

POLAND 04

I’m sorry I don’t remember the whole set list, I felt like in heaven and still can’t really make up my mind. I remember their funny introduction, with little evidence of Polish, but also Ignazio remembered only “Dobry wieczór” (Good Evening) – we teach it during sound check and “Dziekuje” (Thanks) Gian asked how to say good morning in Polish – we said “Dzien dobry” and it really sounds like Ginoble a little. He started as a joke that his surname means good morning in Polish and Ignazio Boschetto invented which means good night 😁 (obviously not)

(I found on YouTube, the video that Alicja refers to…………Daniela)

POLAND 05

Our boys were in fantastic shape, they sang like angels, for me they sounded better than on CD. First solo was Ignazio’s “MEMORY”, then “BRIDGE OVER TROUBLE WATER”, performed by Gianluca and “NO PUEDE SER” by Piero. Then again trio and duets “MARIA”, “TORNA A SURRIENTO” (in Italian Version + English) “MY WAY”, “O PAESE D’O SOLE”.

Gian and Piero had the second and third solos “MI MANCHERAI” and “LOVE STORY”.

POLAND 06

POLAND 07

POLAND 08

From the new album they performed “ARRIVEDERCI ROMA”, “A CHI MI DICE” and “MUSICA CHE RESTA”. From old albums they sang and “UN AMORE COSÌ GRANDE”, “SMILE”, “O SOLE MIO”, “VOLARE” – everyone started dancing, singing and approached the scene.

Girls screaming, ok … not just girls … women a little older too and no one sat anymore.

Very long version of the “GRANDE AMORE” for farewell and our beloved Il Volo took off for the next concert in Bulgaria. Of course they said how much love Poland and Polish fans, he promised to come back next year. ❤️❤️❤️

POLAND 09

We had short M & G meeting because the boys had very early flight the next day, but together with hugs, kisses and chats during the sound check it was really beautiful experience to be so close to my stars. I made funny caricatures of Il Volo guys and asked them (during the sound check we have only a little more time than M & G) to sign each image. I have signatures, bigger “Thanks” from Gian – he liked his caricature more. Piero wondered “Why am I naked ???” and Igna smiled beautifully and said “Good job” I must admit that I am totally in love and together with my friend we acted like crazy 15 year-olds ….

POLAND 10

I can only say that it was the best concert ever. Better than Matera and much better than last year in Poland. Standing ovation almost after each song and faces of Piero, Ignazio and Gian when we shout “BRAVI”, “We love you.”, etc … is priceless.

Kisses, Alicja

And here is our Alicja, happy in the photo, along with her treasures !!!

POLAND 11

(Click on each photo in the collage to get a larger view.)

Alicja, I have no words, you did a wonderful review, and what beautiful videos and photos, certainly you were also in a nice place, front row!

And what about your caricatures that you made the boys sign, beautiful, congratulations!

You told me that you also met Jolanta, how wonderful, how many beautiful friendships, thanks to IL VOLO.

Thanks for these good times.

Daniela…….see you soon!😘

IGNAZIO BOSCHETTO, A NEW CHANSONNIER? by Daniela

About a month ago, my dear friend Valeria Bosch, whom you all know well by now, asked me for help in translating an article on Ignazio into English. For me it was a real pleasure and an honor, to translate Valeria’s beautiful and appropriate reflections. Surely many of you will have already read them, but I repeat them here again, in order to re-cheer your hearts.  💖

Enjoy the reading!

Ignazio 01

IGNAZIO: the lights are dimmed on the stage, in the central cone only a young man dressed in dark, the sleeves of the shirt rolled up and a fashionable “gilet” (vest) of the past. For a few seconds he concentrates himself closing his eyes, then starts with the first notes of “Almeno tu nell’universo”, low, just whispered, to rise more and more, as the pathos of the music grows, in a conjunction between voice, music and text that captivates the viewer, keeps him suspended between earth and sky, in a region totally detached from reality and from matter. The passages of register, whispering, trembling, vibrating, acute, follow one another urgently, not as a mere demonstration of technical ability and artistic maturity, but as perfect emanations of the emotions of the mind and heart. At times a “divine violin” approaches him, it’s Alessandro, who, with pure magic, underlines, exalts, centuplicates the impact of the song on the public.

Ignazio 02

IGNAZIO is like this: his relationship with music is symbiotic, when he closes his eyes and sings, leaves for distant lands, goes beyond the mountains and the sea, and takes you with him into his secret world, where you can abstract from everything, in those few minutes you lose the connection with time and space, to get a taste of that beauty and that perfection that has always been the man’s ultimate intent, an ethereal and impalpable world, but perhaps for this reason eternal and indestructible, the world of true music.

Ignazio 03

IGNAZIO said it in the presentation: he chose the song, delivered to immortal memory by Mia Martini, because impressed by the story of this extraordinary singer, a sad and painful story, but at the same time full of greatness and genius. The text, by Bruno Lauzi, fits perfectly: in the eternal restlessness and discontent of human feelings (“people are crazy … when fashion changes … they change too”), the reference point can only be someone who can give sincerity (“tell me that you will always be sincere”), corresponding to ever-increasing love (“more, more, more”), as a promise of something finally lasting and indeed eternal (“you will not change … you will really love me, really more and more”).

Ignazio 04

IGNAZIO was very courageous in choosing this solo, because the piece is linked in the collective memory to the unique and unforgettable Mia’s interpretation and therefore presented the risk of not being accepted by the public. But precisely for this reason he chose the way of not following the normal canons of a “cover”, but he made a real revisitation of it, focusing, more than on the intensely dramatic tone and on Mia’s tension, on a very modern interpretation (30 years passed since that 1989 in which the song was presented in Sanremo!!), made of fragments and continuous contrasts, deliberately disarticulated, marked by the intense passionate expression of the face and the beautiful hands that follow all the musical movements.

Ignazio 05

IGNAZIO, I thought looking at him, has the suffered and passionate execution and “le physique du role” of a chansonnier of the golden age of the Parisian “boites de nuit” (nightclubs), where in the 50s and 60s of the last century was formed that new movement of unique musicians who sang the craft of living, the discontent, the breakup of an era, a movement that in Italy became that of songwriters, some of whom, Paoli, Guccini, de Gregori, Finardi, delight us even today. Certainly Ignazio does not sing his own texts, even though we know that he has already shown that is able to compose, doing it, and also successfully, for other interpreters; but that his empathy, so intense, in the sung notes, that deep and emotional expression of the face, his interpretation so authentic descends directly from those noble fathers who lit the musical nights of the past.

Ignazio 06

Contemporary Italian music has an urgent need to revitalize itself and Ignazio, and with him, with absolutely equal ability and talent, his friends Gianluca and Piero, with their “Musica Tour” are really teaching everyone how this innovation can happen without breaking with the most genuine Italian tradition, without freakiness, without vulgarity, without pseudo-intellectualistic nonsense raps. It’s from them, from the young people of Il Volo, foolishly accused by brains without thickness to “make old music”, that is coming the proposal that will give new life to the Italian music scene.

Ignazio 07
