Personally Speaking – Anticipation ~ Mary Bohling

THE THRILL OF ANTICIPATION

Anticipation….a word that speaks of expected pleasure to come…a promise that something good is ahead.  It urges us to think about what we have to look forward to with eager excitement.

Many of us are anticipating a wonderful experience this winter when our special young men will be gracing us with their presence again.

There is the anticipation of hearing the soft mellow tones of Gianluca’s velvet voice.  Yes, those velvet tones come through on the CD’s, but are doubly enhanced when accompanied by his impish grin and twinkling eyes when he is seen in person.  He has grown into a real charmer with glances that could melt a glacier.  He’s even become graceful and adept at dance moves—something he found difficult in the early years.
Yes, we anticipate being charmed by our precious Gianluca.

We look forward to Ignazio’s anticipated antics…..his infectious grin and the affection he shows for his brothers.

We love his playfulness, but we know he isn’t all fun and games.  He has a beautiful, well-trained voice, and he uses it magnificently.  We have seen how much a part of the song he becomes emotionally in “Memories” and “Yo Te Amo.”  Yes, we anticipate being enthralled by our magnificent Ignazio.

We eagerly anticipate Piero‘s appearance right before our eyes on stage with his compelling presence.  And when his meraverglioso voice reaches the heights of his amazing range, soaring with power and breathtaking beauty, we are weak with the thrill of it.  Yes, we anticipate soaring to musical heights with our wonderful Piero.

We anticipate having the time of our lives when confronted by the boys—their stage presence, participation with the audience, and interaction among themselves…the perfect blending of their amazing voices, their enthusiasm for the music, their enjoyment of being on stage and entertaining their fans.

Let’s relish the joy of anticipating this upcoming event whether it’s our first concert or one of several.  In view of the world-wide popularity they have gained and the demands for personal appearances, we feel especially blessed that they are coming back to us–to the place where they started--to those who first realized their potential and loved them from the beginning.

It would be perfect if every one of our Flight Crew were going to be able to attend a concert this year, but sadly, that may not be happening.  I sincerely hope that those who can’t will feel joy in anticipating the arrival of our dear young men back on tour in the USA.  There will be reports and comments and videos for all to see.  Somehow just knowing that they are HERE can make us happy.
So, here’s to ANTICIPATION:  Knowing that something good lies ahead.  Let’s enjoy the waiting time thinking of what a delicious treat we have in store.

EMOTION…..

Emotion, what a delicate human trait…it can be wonderful, or it can be terrible. How many different ones do we go through in a day—or in a lifetime? Sometimes we try to hide it or suppress it, but it usually wins and comes out. They may be spontaneous or developed over time.

Emotion expressed in song is one of the surprising and beautiful things about our boys’ abilities. One wonders how they could feel and express such emotion at the beginning when they were so young.

Many of their current songs are about love–often lost or unfulfilled, and they bring such feeling to the lyrics, which we usually don’t understand, but can get the meaning just from what we see on their faces and hear in their voices. Other singers sing their songs, but no one brings to them the emotion that the men of Il Volo do.

Consider the reverent expression of “O Holy Night.” It must be a challenge to project the perfect facial expression while focusing on the vocal aspect. In the video in which they are singing in the cathedral, when Piero is hitting the high notes with perfection, Gianluca is looking at him with such an expression of affection and admiration. This is something that we often see–the way that each of them is emotionally involved the the others’ singing. It’s a thing of beauty, and something that they are not inhibited about showing.

The emotional component of the operatic solos of Piero is so evident in his delivery
that even though the language in unfamiliar, one can feel the emotion of the song through the masterful technique he shows with his voice plus the exquisite facial expressions.

Watch Ignazio’s face when he is singing “Memories.” He isn’t just singing–He’s experiencing the emotion of the song. His delicate shading of the musical tones and the lyrics, as well as the depth of facial expression, contributes so much to the emotional impact of the song.

Gianluca, too, is the master of cuing in to the emotion of the song. He brings his impish grin and twinkling eyes when appropriate, or becomes sultry and sexy (a la Frank Sinatra) when that is called for.

If these guys can bring so much passion to their music at this time in their lives, imagine what can happen as they continue to mature and experience more of life.

With their talent and the kind of men that they are, we can only imagine.

Meanwhile we will continue to listen with awe and love to what they bring to us today.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I tried to write a little blessing for you, but I found this and I cannot do better.  It speaks about this country, but the sentiments are the same for each of our countries.

“Christmas is a season of hope and joy. a time to give thanks for the blessings of Christ’s birth and for the blessings that surround us every day of the year.  We have much to be thankful for in this country and we have a responsibility to help those in need.  Jesus calls us to help others and acts of kindness toward the less fortunate fulfill the spirit of the Christmas season.

On Christmas, we pray for freedom, justice and peace on earth.  We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom and we ask for God’s blessing on their loved ones.  We ask God to watch over all of our men and women in uniform, many who are serving in distant lands.  Our entire nation is grateful to them and we pray for their safe return.”

On behalf of the administrators, writers and contributors of this site, who “share the love” of Il Volo with you, we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.

‘Twas The Night

I have a need to post this poem I wrote (mangled) in 2013.  It’s my favorite for obvious reasons.   Yes…I plan to post it every year.

  ‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through the villa,
not a creature was stirring, not even Godzilla (couldn’t think of another rhyme)

When, what to my wondering eyes should I hear, (I take liberties)
but a song and three Boys, not tiny, but Dear! (lots of liberties)

I saw Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio too,
up to my rooftop, to my living room they flew!

They were dressed all in Armani, from their head to their foot,
but their clothes were all tarnished, with ashes and soot.

A bundle of love they had in their pack,
and they looked just like heaven, when I calmly stared back!

His eyes how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! (that really is a line!)
Piero’s glasses were there, the color of cherry! (that one’s not)

Gian said not a word but went straight to his work
and filled all my dreams with songs and a perk!

He’d left me Ignazio all covered with bows
and giving a nod up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his Fiat, to Piero gave a whistle,
and away they both flew, like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim as they drove out of site,
“Happy Christmas to all, I hope Marie doesn’t bite!”
