Il Volo Rocked the House – Wolf Trap – June 13, 2014

20140613_184448

For two days the Washington, DC area suffered with dark skies, rain and even flooding, but on concert day –

the sun finally came out in the afternoon!  We were ready for Il Volo!

See the little X on the left of the stage – this is where Marie, Alicia and Michele sat!  They turned out to be REALLY good seat!

Just after 8 PM – Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero burst on stage with amazing energy and enthusiasm, which they sustained the entire concert!  The guys really seemed to be enjoying themselves and so were the fans!  I have about 500 pictures – they all won’t be good  – video was not allowed, yet I think some may turn up on YouTube though I did not take any!  The songs may have varied a little from previous concerts – Ignazio sang Memory, Gianluca and Piero sang their 2 solos, we heard Beautiful Day, This Time and Smile as well as many of the others people have mentioned, Il Canto, We Are Love, El Triste and Il Mondo!  This was a fantastic concert – it’s after 2 am – and I want to get a few pictures up – more to come later – Marie and I will be meeting Elaine soon in Detroit and we all will travel to Chicago where Kelly will join us and I will be going on to Philly!  Marie and I introduced ourselves to Barbara and Mrs. Ginoble tonight  – they are lovely!  I don’t think you will need any help identifying the photos below!  Oh, did I mention – the voices, the voices were absolutely amazing tonight!  Thank you Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca for your hard work – we loved it!    Good night and enjoy!    Michele (MFA or mfazzara)

Greek Theater ~~ Through Victoria’s Eyes

Hey Everyone!
We’ve had several reviews of the concert in LA, but we have one more from Victoria.  Enjoy!
Here are my thoughts about the Greek Theater concert.
This was almost a disappointing “non-concert” for one of my friends. Half of our group agreed to meet in the parking structure of where we work and drive in one car to the concert venue. On our way  there, one friend checked her bag and realized that she left her ticket in another bag. We had to drive back to her car, and she was going to go home and not go to the concert anymore. We tried to convince her that there was still time; it was 6:40, the concert started at 8:00, and she only lives a 30 minute drive away. Thanks to the youngest member of our group who volunteered to drive home with her to get the ticket, they came back on time for the second song. We work night shift, and she worked very hard Friday night.  She would have been depressed for days had she missed this concert  we all have been looking forward to. The lesson here ladies:  I know we change handbags to match our outfits, but please make sure you have your tickets in the right bag !!!

About the concert……………..
I have just read Myron’s review and I agree, the concert was great!  I have better appreciation of Gianluca’s beautiful baritone with the songs that he sang; so perfect for him. Last year, “Night and Day” did not affect me the way it did the other night. I realized that this a difficult song to learn and sing; it does not have a very “singable” melody, and yet  he sang it perfectly.
The songs that all three sang as solos really showed off their  great voices. Ignazio and Piero sang their solos better than the first time I heard them on the PBS special.  Ignazio’s voice sound fuller without losing its sweetness,  Piero’s voice is even more powerful.  All the solos received standing ovations.
There were a lot of funny moments, and Gianluca was no longer a bystander; he was now a part of it . Piero even joked about his ears. There was some dancing too, mostly from Ignazio and Piero.

“Maria” was one song that brought a lot of laughs from the audience.  They started by saying that they were in love with somebody whose name  starts with “M.” This year there were no love seats nor Marias picked from the audience. On one side of the stage, Gianluca started singing with right arm stretched out, one girl started walking towards  him. [I think Gian was on his knees, my view was partially blocked] and other girls followed.  Ignazio was in the middle of the stage, and when Piero started singing, I looked his way at the other side of the stage, and a girl was on the stage with him, her arms around him. In the past concerts,  a girl might stand next to Piero, and he would have his arm on her shoulder. This girl acted like she would not let him go, and the audience just kept laughing.
On one side of the stage Gian had a group of girls close to  him, on the other side was Piero with this one girl clinging to him; this was better than M & G for this girl (from reading comments on M&G, one is allowed to hug them only briefly).  This girl had her arms around Piero for the whole length of the song, that’s a good 3 minutes !!.  So to the ladies who are going to the coming concerts,  watch out for your hug  opportunity from any of the guys.  You might get lucky like this girl!
They announced that the last song was “Il Mondo”, after which they left the stage. The audience was on its feet, and they came back for “Il triste” and “O Sole Mio.”  I would have loved to hear “Painfully Beautiful,” “Ultima Volta” and “El reloj”, as well as the song they sang with Toto, “L ‘Amore.”  Maybe next time.
Before the start of the show, I looked around and there was hardly an empty seat. I found out yesterday that this was a sold out concert.  This theater has a seating capacity of 5870 according to Wikipedia.  The guys looked as handsome as ever. They gained new fans among my friends, some of whom heard them for the first time. 2 of them want front row seats next time they come to town. They will have to start working hard to pay for those tickets. 2 friends are in love with Piero, 1 with Ignazio, 1 with Gianluca and the rest are like me, in love with all three.
I’m sorry that I did not meet any of the fans from flight crew.  I did not see anybody with a flight crew badge. Maybe I walked around that gate  that Myron mentioned at the wrong time.
I’m already looking forward to the next concert.  Maybe Myron could arrange one or several for Vegas after their Latin American tour,  won’t that be nice ?   wishing…………..

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…….

Report

Hi Everyone,

This post is entitled “In Case You Missed it” but I don’t think we missed all that much!! We have been so fortunate to have Elaines two reviews of the concerts in Modesto and Saratoga. We had the benefit of Connie’s experience in Saratoga. Myron has provided us with his amazing insight and review of the concert at the Greek in LA.  We have seen one of a kind photos and videos of the first two concerts provided by Elaine. Thanks Elaine, those were a sight for sore eyes and sooo appreciated!!!

Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca seem to be enjoying their return to the USA. They did experience jet lag the first few days and seemed sooo tired. They quickly perked up, judging by the raves about the concerts. The one thing you can expect from “Our Guys” is that they give their all and love to sing and be around their adoring fans. I would say the only complaint addressed by the concert goers in general is the way the Meet and Greets are handled. As noted in Myron’s review; he was told by Barbara that Il Volo management does not handle these, but contracts them out. Hopefully in the future we can see some improvement there.

The San Diego concert was a hit of course, and Il Volo is off to Buffalo for their  concert tomorrow night!!

As we speak, Marie, her 2 sisters and Leelee are heading for Washington DC for a few days of sight seeing and meeting up with Michele ( you’ll know them, they’re the ones that will be singing “We Are Love” in front of the White House).  That happy little group will all attend the concert Friday night at Vienna, Virginia!  Have fun all, we’ll be anxious to hear of your experiences.

In Case You Missed It here are a few tweets and photo from “The Guys” in San Diego.

Lets not forget Piero’s Birthday coming up on the 24th!!  It’s a BIG one for him, he’ll be 21!!  Can you believe our Piero is 21?? All the “Guys” are growing up so fast!! Seems like yesterday…..  Hope you all were able to submit your Birthday greetings to Kelly for the “Happy Birthday” video. BirthdayBalloons2Clipart

Check your local listings for the Il Volo appearance on Sabado Gigante on June 14th. I have seen my local listings and it seems that channel is showing The World Cup games at that time. You will need to check the listings for your area.

Love and luck in Buffalo, Il Volo!!      ca2

Il Volo in Concert – Los Angeles – Greek Theater – June 7, 2014

Have you ever loved something to point where it hurt ? You know this tiny amount of heaven will only last for 2 ½ hours and then you go back to your everyday life – “reality”. You wish it would go on forever and that hurts. So I am using the title of a song Il Volo sang in their first album (see title) to describe the concert last night. So many times the singing was so beautiful that I was in tears – music that was “Painfully Beautiful”. Why did it have to end? Well, here is a review.

First, the boys, the guys, THE MEN – (Piero can’t possibly be turning 21- why do I feel so old ? ).
If ever a fan might be worried that their singing might be less than what it should be, just remember the years of training and solid family life-style they have had. This amounts to such a tremendous work ethic that I can’t imagine they will ever let us down – if they have anything to do with it. This was a perfect example of that work ethic. The vocal work was always right on the mark. The details such as HUGE BREATH support, perfect vowel shapes (watch a video of Gianluca for a lesson on perfect vowels), beautifully supported high notes (Ignazio never fails); pure vocal projection and power without the usual pop singer screaming (Hooray for Piero). This year, more than ever in the years since I have been seeing them in concert, they have shown such passion and emotion and it was laid out there on the stage for us AND we could feel it – WHEW ! Feel your heart skip a beat ! I will discuss the personal side of the boys later. Pardon my pride of ownership: “My boys were absolutely on the money” . This was 2 ½ hours of artistically superb singing !

This was the first stop on their tour that used full-live orchestra of about 30 players. Most other concerts will use five instrumentalists and pre-recorded orchestra track on computer.

The program was sort of a potluck of their favorites from the past years:

Act One

Un Amore Cosi Grande

Granda

Tous les Visages de l’Amour

We are Love

No Puede Ser (Piero’s solo)

Caruso (done as a trio this time)

Ti Voglio Tanto Bene (Ignazio’s solo)

(from the very first PBS show)

This Time ( from first season)

I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You

(brand new Elvis arrangement for Gianluca )

Mama (from first season)

Act Two

Can you Feel the Love tonight

Per Te

Memory (Ignazio’s solo)

Angel

Il Canto

Smile

Night and Day (Gianluca’s solo)

Beautiful Day

Maria (fro three)

Non Ti Scordar Di Me (Piero’s solo)

Surrender/Torna a Surriento

Il Mondo

———-

Encores

El Triste

O Solo Mio/Now or Never

Long-term fans will see music from three seasons mixed together and it was great.

My favorites;
The new arrangement of the Elvis song: “I can’t Help Falling in Love You”. I like this song and Gianluca wrapped it in a blanket of beautiful passion. His maturity is showing more and more. His “Night and Day” was even better than last year- superb. Ignazio stopped the show with his wonderful “ Ti Voglio Tanto Bene” (they joked about how the last time he sang that song (three years ago) he was 75 pounds heavier. He did look good last night. He also was showing more maturity in singing. Piero just wiped up the whole place with his powerhouse solo “No Puede Ser” . They talked about him training to do an opera role later this year. This young man is serious. For the full ensemble pieces my favorite this time was “Il Canto” which Ignazio accidently announced as “ Il Volo” – whoops ! Then would come my main favorite: “Il Mondo” But they were all so good.

Staging and crew:
Well, the boys may have been nearly perfect in their work but the crew that backed them up was not. The stage crew at the Greek was very sloppy in the stage set-up. The general lighting was poorly timed (to the music) and the worst tech problem was the follow spot-operators. I know some of you may think this is silly but when you are in the audience and your favorite singer starts a song and he is totally in the dark for two or three phrases that is terrible. It was so bad that the boys made mention of it several times in the show. At one point all three spots were to be on each boy but Ignazio was in the dark and he was the one scheduled to talk. So he said, in his typical light-hearted fashion, that “electricity is so expensive that we cannot afford to have lights” (huge audience laugh ! ) (power to you Ignazio – the audience was very pleased he said that). There were other times that made a lot of us feel that spot operators needed to be fired.

The Il Volo sound system was tied into the Greek Theater sound system which was way overloaded to bass sounds (like a rock band) and that drown the boys’ sounds once in a while – fortunately not too often. I do get annoyed because our boys’ work very hard and they need to depend on a good partnership with tech and crew and when that does not happen it hurts the boys’ presentation and the entire show.

Atmosphere:
The tech stuff aside, there was so much that was wonderful about this concert. I don’t usually like open-air theaters but that evening the sky was clear, the moon was out and the weather was beautiful. The acoutics in the Greek work very well for an open-air place.
I was about 8 rows back and the viewing was great. The orchestra was very fine indeed.

My favorite thing (aside from the singing) was seeing how these boys have matured since I saw them last November. They are engaging the audience more and more and their between-songs banter does not feel a little rigid anymore but very natural and really funny this time. I mean really funny. In the past Gianluca would tend to stay out of the clowing around but this time he engaged just as much as the others. It warmed my heart to see this funny, loving banter and a little horse-play going on and the audience loved it and loved them. One scene: Ignazio was fooling around between songs messing the hair of the guitar player and then the pianist and then he went to mess the hair of Gianluca and WOW – you don’t mess Gianluca’s hair ! So they had a pretend hair fight. We all laughed outloud. Then they turned around and sang just perfectly.

One little cute and funny story: during the singing of the Lion King song, “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” Ignazio made a mistake with the text – the words. After the song was done he owned up to it in a funny way telling the story of how they saw the show on Broadway and he went back to his hotel room and could not sleep because the words “ Hakuna Matata” were going through his mind. That was the reason he goofed the words on the song – “Hakuna Matata”.

End result: the audience (about 4000) was totally transported into a heavenly realm of musical artistry and it was obvious from the pre-show and intermission conversation that the people came loaded for love. They already knew it was going to be great. I had several meetings during my time there: There were three different groups of fans from the Flight Crew that I ran across, both before the show and after. Some I was expecting and the others were a suprise to me. All in all 14 new friends and Flight Crew fans.

Personal side:
The other meeting was at 3:30pm in the afternoon when I had set up to meet backstage with Barbara, Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio as best they could fit it in. I arrived just as they were in sound check and rehearsal. It was very interesting to watch them do their rehearsal work. Barbara and the boys were very welcoming and warm but the time was cut short because they had added another radio interview to be done before concert. I did have a little more time with Piero and wished him a happy birthday. Ignazio was so sweet to mention the flowers for his grandfather’s funeral. Gianluca waved at me (on the side of the stage) but was busy with the orchestra working out Elvis. I must say that the term “Flight Crew” got mentioned by them here and there during the talk. I tell you we are becoming a large family.

Thank You Myron, This was just beautiful!

Il Volo 2014 North America tour – 6/6 Mountain Winery, Saratoga, CA

2014 has to be the luckiest year for me!  I am fortunate enough to attend my second back to back concerts.  And I don’t have to go far, both concerts are held within my area.  Mountain Winery is situated on a hilltop overlooking the famous Silicon Valley, and reaches as far as the beautiful City of San Francisco.  The weather and temperature was just right and with a slight smell from the winery, yesterday was bound to be a perfect night!  And it was.  Our guys were AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!

Unfortunately, there was a no photos and videos policy so these are the best I can get.  But WOW, don’t they look handsome (specially you know who!).

I was also able to meet up with several of our Flight Crew members.  These are the pictures we took before the concerts.  I am so surprised and amazed to meet two of our Crews from Guatemala – Agnes and Marisse.  This was their second concert just like me. But unlike me they will also be going to their third at LA’s Greek Theatre!  Bravo to them, what true Il Volovers!

Flight Crew’s in house Pirate -Connie had such a memorable experience she can’t wait and send me her concert story already.  I thoroughly enjoy her story as I share much of her feelings as well.  Connie also shares her M&G adventure and hopefully this will give us some pointers as to what to expect.

From Pirate/Connie,
I finally got to see IL VOLO in concert! Wow, it was even better than I expected it to be. This is one happy old pirate.  Jeanine and I traveled all the way down from Portlandia, Oregon to Saratoga, CA just to see them. On the day of IL VOLO I felt excited and yet calm. Did I mention how close we were….CLOSE! Jeanine and I were in row C seats 1 & 2 right in front of the stage with NO one to block our view. Happiness.

They were so close…and so handsome! I was struck by how Gianluca walks in a very deliberate way as he comes onto the stage. Piero was next and my heart lurched and my eyes got reaaaaaaaaallly wide. I am amazed the world still rotated in that moment. Then Ignazio, the handsome Ignazio. It suddenly occurred to me that Ignazio would look really good on a pirate ship, but then the vision of Piero pulled me back (he is really good at that!) I also have to note that the crowd cheered and applauded when each guy came out, BUT I do believe it was Ignazio who captured the loudest applause and cheer.

What can I say to you about the music?  That it was divine is something we all know. I wish I could have kept track of each song they sang. Piero has such a wonderful, GLORIOUS voice, I think I sort of, kinda, maybe quit breathing during his solos. I have heard many versions of “Memory” before, most of which were blah, but Ignazio sang it with such passion, I could tell by the emotion he invested in that song that it is clearly one of his all time favorites and he made me fall in love with it all over again. Gianluca did the Elvis solo – “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, beautifully but I so loved his rendition of “Night & Day”. No one can ever say that IL VOLO sings without passion and great meaning to each of their songs. It was simply thrilling to hear them sing live.

Then came the Meet & Greet, suddenly I began to feel a bit like I was in a cattle drive with one of their handlers moving us along. However, I kept my eyes on Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio and you know, as much as I like how spiffy they look on stage, I think I like seeing them look casual more. So eyes on the prize I watched them meet all the crazy fans and then…..came my moment: Arms wide, I advanced toward Piero and Ignazio and said ” ABBRACCIAMI” which means “Hug Me!” in Italian (Gianluca was busy talking to another fan who Did Not Realize This Was My Moment). I grabbed Piero and I heard him say to me, “Oh so sweet of you”! Then while I still had him in my grasp, I laid my hand on his chest and looked into those red glasses and said to him “You are my ThunderBaron, your voice is like that to me”. He looked a bit surprised and I saw Ignazio get closer. I turned to him with Piero right beside me and I told them, ” You make my heart sing”. Ignazio looked confused, so I repeated myself but this time I said ” IL VOLO makes my heart sing”. Right now I can see the moment and their faces but I can’t for the life of me conjure up the words that describe the moment . Instead I looked at them and said, “ok, time for my photo’ and put my arms around both of them. Finally Gianluca turned around and gave me a radiant smile, then CLICK- and it was over.

Now I have to figure out new ways to make plenty of loot so I can afford to chase them around concert after concert. I wish…

ILVOLOwME

That was quite an adventure! Thanks for sharing, pirate style!
