Personally Speaking ~ Through The Day With Il Volo ~ Mary Bohling

Off to a good start…..
Many fans have written that they always start their day with Il Volo.  It’s what gets them going in the morning.  The joy that comes through the guys’ voices is so contagious that  you can’t help but feel inspired to begin the day with good feelings and a big smile.
An after lunch treat ……
Lunch is over….the dishes are done, and now is the time to sit down in the recliner, put your feet  up, and treat yourself to some more Il Volo.  You’ve got time for a DVD—housework can wait.  One look at those handsome guys and you will no doubt feel a warm glow come on.  Just relax and take a trip to Ilvololand.  Escape to that magical place.  Focus on the beauty of the three young men who are there in your living room just  to entertain you.  Let the harmony of their blended voices envelope you.  Yes, it’s over too soon, and it’s time to get to the laundry.  But never mind; they will come again whenever you call them.

Happy hour?……
You’ve made it through to 4:00, and it’s perfectly all right to take another Il Volo break.  What will it be…..wine or chocolate?  Make your choice and get comfortable
with one of your favorite CD’s.  Stop thinking about what to make for dinner and lose yourself in the beauty of the music.  Just focus on the sound and take it all in.  Think about how lucky you are to have found these amazing guys who are there in your living room at the click of a button whenever you need them….and it has become a need, hasn’t it?  Would you call it an obsession?  Maybe, but it’s a good one.  Sometimes you feel overloaded and need the soothing lift you get from just  letting the magic of the music take over.  Ahh, that’s better.  Now you feel like you can get back to the real world.
And so to bed……
You’ve come to the end of your day.  You don’t want to carry the minor problems that have come up to bed with you.  You need Il Volo.  So you get comfy and turn on the CD player that is always handy on your bedside table, and when THE VOICES come on, you are transported to a place of such harmony and beauty that any worries and cares immediately fade away.  Everything seems right again.  You take a deep breath and say, “goodnight, Piero, goodnight, Gianluca, goodnight, Ignazio, my sweet boys.  I’ll see you again tomorrow.”

Personally Speaking ~ These Are A Few Of Their Favorite Things ~ Mary Bohling

Everyone has some favorite things.  Our Il Volo guys are very open about sharing some of their favorites with us, their fans.  The following is in my words–what I guess they might say.  There is no claim of authenticity.

PIERO:

Okay, here are some of my favorite things….

Going fast.  I love to go fast whether driving my Bentley or cruising around Naro on my scooter.  If it weren’t for my passion for bringing our music around the world, I would have wanted to be a race car driver.

image

A lot of my favorite activities are water based….whether I’m ON the water on a jet ski or a boat, or IN the water diving and swimming, or even UNDER the water scuba diving, the sea is a big part of my life.

image

In the fast paced scheme of things, meditation helps to keep me balanced—absorbing the peacefulness of a natural setting all by myself is a favorite thing to do.

image

Home and family are at the top of my list of favorite things, and now that I have my own home, sometimes I want to take some time there alone just relaxing.

image

Physical activity is very important to me.  Working out at the gym, playing tennis or soccer, biking and bowling are all favorites.

image

So, these are just a few of my favorite things.  Life is so full of wonderful experiences it would be hard to name them all.  But I must say that Gian, Igna, my beautiful family and the Il Volo fans are all favorite things.

GIANLUCA SAYS;

A few of my favorite things….hmm, well…

I love soccer.  I always follow the Italian team, but most of all I love to play the game myself.  A highlight of my soccer career was making the goal that helped to win the game in Turin.

image

Piero has shown me the value of working out at the gym, and it has become a favorite thing for me to do.  Of course I want to look good in my speedos when I go to the beach.  I always keep my phone handy while on the machines at the gym just in case an important call comes in.

image

image

Spending time with brother Ernie is a favorite pastime.  In spite of the difference in our ages, we are great friends.  Now that he is older he often goes along on the world tours.

image

My phone has become one of my favorite things since I am away from home so much.  I need to stay in touch with the important people in my life….Mom, Dad, Ernie and Martina.  How could I ever get along without it?

image

When I want to relax and have fun I may head to the beach.  It’s my favorite place in the summer.  Whether sunning, swimming, playing beach volley ball or soccer it’s where I want to be.

image

Can’t close without mentioning these favorites: my Il Volo brothers Piero and Igazio, my family and all of the Ilvolover fans.

IGNAZIO  tells us…..

My favorite things?

I’ve always been crazy about animals, and recently have acquired the beginnings of my menagerie.  It started with Walter and Buddy.  I love to ride, and galloping along on Walter’s back is a favorite way to unwind.  Buddy was my first puppy, and he is so much fun that he now has a brother.  Playing with the dogs is another favorite way to relax.  If I weren’t so passionate about the musical career of Il Volo I think I would have become a veterinarian.

image

image

I think that playing the drums is a favorite thing to do, because it allows me to really let myself go and feel the beat of the music while being as noisy as I want to be.  I could be a professional drummer if I ever gave up singing, which I won’t of course, because it’s my most favorite thing.

image

When I’m really craving speed, I may turn to my “hog.”  Racing around the countryside  is a favorite thing to do.  Sometimes I just need FAST and LOUD.

image

My favorite stalker is a very determined woman.  She seems to show up wherever I am.  She is partial to dimples and doesn’t miss an opportunity to get in a kiss whenever she can.  If Allesandra and  I ever decide to go our separate ways, I’m sure that Miss Marie will be waiting for me.

image

image

Also must include in my favorites: my devoted family, the Il Volo fans, and my adopted brothers, Piero and Gianluca.

I think the guys would agree with Robert Louis Stevenson when he wrote, “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.”

Guys, you make us happy, and you are three of our FAVORITE THINGS.

Personally Speaking ~ An Idol Becomes a Friend ~

14199267_10210652398374918_6948883680929669998_n

This beautiful picture of Andrea Bocelli’s son Matteo,  Gianluca, Andrea and Ercole, made me think of this meaningful quote by Wilma Rudolph,  a famous American track and field sprinter.

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit.  We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.”

We all know that Andrea Bocelli has been an idol of Gianluca’s since he was very young.  Who can forget the heart warming reaction Gianluca had when  Andrea congratulated him on winning the Ti Lascio Una Canzone competition?  Gianluca was not the only one shedding tears during that beautiful moment.

Seeing this photo of the two of them together made me think of the “greatness” they both possess, the power of Gianluca’s dreams and the important  influence this person had in Gianluca’s life.

Born with poor eyesight, Andrea became permanently blind at the age of 12 following a football accident.  As a young boy he showed great passion for music.  At the age of six, he started piano lessons, and later, also learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar and drums.  Then, when his nanny, Oriana, gave him the first record of Franco Corelli, he realized that pursuing the career of a tenor was his destiny.  By the age of seven, he was able to recognize the famous voices of the time and tried to emulate the great interpreters.

Like Gianluca, Bocelli also spent time singing during his childhood.  He gave his first concert in a small village not far from where he was born.  At the age of 14, he won his first song competition, the Margherita d’Oro in Viareggio with “O Sole Mio.”  Does this not sort of parallel what we know of Gianluca’s start in singing?

Andrea has gone on to show the world his greatness not only in music, but in philanthropy and charitable work.  Gianluca has been doing the same giving of his time and talent to various charitable organizations and important causes close by his home town.

I see Gianluca being so positively influenced by not only his extraordinary parents and family, but by watching and learning from this great man as well.  Andrea gave him powerful words of advice upon winning that memorable competition...“Always think with the mind, Sing with your voice and listen to your heart.”   Look where the power of his dreams has brought him to this day.

When introducing Andrea Bocelli during one of her Christmas specials, Celine Dion said, “if God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.”  I think it’s safe to say the same when talking about the voices of the men of Il Volo.

Personally Speaking ~Are We There Yet?

As a child we would pose this question to my dear Dad over and over as we drove down the highway on family trips with all seven of us kids in tow, “Are we there yet?”  Being a patient man he would answer it the first few hours and then ignore it the rest of the way.  We kids must have realized if the car hadn’t stopped yet, we must not be there!

Well, I feel like a kid again as Marie and I are anxiously awaiting to leave on our Italian adventure!  I’m not bugging her (yet) by asking if we’re there yet (she will hear that once or twice in the plane for sure), but I do send her the ticker count regularly as we count down the days until take off!

I understand and appreciate why people choose to go through a travel agent or go with a tour, but  we chose to do it all on our own and it’s been a wonderful journey thus far and we haven’t even left yet!  Through hours and hours of researching everything from cities, towns, villages, transportation, lodging, sites to see, car rental, insurances,  you name it…we have learned so much already about this beautiful country we are about to set foot in and have tailored our trip exactly to our desires!   It’s also been a plus to hear from those on this site who have gone there before us and have offered their valuable insight.

Oh dear…Jane should have listened to Marie when she said the deal sounded too good to be true!!

ITALY OR BUST!!

Personally Speaking ~ Una Magica Notte Per Mi ~ Mary Bohling

Yes, it was a magical night for me, in spite of the disappointments as Jana has written.  Magical just by virtue of even being there, which was a miracle in itself.  When we first got the letter announcing the event, my granddaughter, Kate, said that she would like to take me as my present  for my birthday and Christmas.

image

So we planned our strategy for hitting the computer button at just the right time to get the tickets.  She, being the most techno-savy and quick with the finger, was designated to do the job.  The tickets were to go on sale at 10 o’clock.  I called her in the morning to remind her to be ready.  Then at five minutes to nine, our time, it suddenly hit me that ten in Detroit was nine here.  I quickly called her at work to tell her to get on it NOW, but she was in a meeting, and couldn’t be disturbed.  She was able to call me back ten minutes later and got through right away and get our tickets-just in time.  Jana was right, they were sold out in twenty minutes.  So getting them was in itself a small miracle….thanks to the guardian angel that whispered in my ear “time difference” at the very last minute.
The dinner at Antonio’s was great–seeing old friends, Chris, Jana, and Ginny, and meeting new ones, Sharon, Donna, Emelia and more.  But on to the main event at the PBS studio.  First, the diningroom--tables beautifully set with several bottles of wine included.  My daughter, granddaughter, and Allene were in our party and others at our table that I got acquainted with, including Jo Longstreth and Kerri Buchanan.
image
image
Our  table went first to the Meet and Greet.  As Jana said, it was even more rushed than usual.  We requested that I have a picture alone with the guys and then a three generation one.  He, (the photographer) said that it wouldn’t be possible, so we opted for the group.  As we were disassembling from that, someone, I wish I knew who, said, “let the birthday girl have her own picture.”  They had already been told that it was my birthday.  So back I went for that…..just the first of many kindnesses shown to me on that magic night.
image
After the Meet  and Greet  it was back to the dining room for coffee and dessert and she raffle.  Michelle, the PBS hostess of the event, told everyone that it was my birthday, and all sang Happy Birthday, and there was a cupcake with candles.  Kerri Buchcanan, a new friend, won the raffle prize, a huge poster of the guys mounted on a thick backing and autographed that night.  Everyone was so impressed with it.  Kerri brought it back to the table where we oohed and aahed over it, and the next thing I knew she was standing next to me and saying that she wanted to give it to me for my birthday!!  I absolutely couldn’t believe it–who could give that prize away?  It was just the most generous gesture ever.  Another great kindness that I was blessed to be shown on that magical night.
image
image
Going into the studio for the filming, a woman in a wheelchair and Allene and I, who had our walkers, were put at the head of the line, which meant that we had front row seats and an excellent view of the guys, who were sitting at a high table.  Piero was sitting at the end of the table closest to us, and throughout the evening he would look over our way and smile and say something.  I think he was trying to compensate for the fact that they weren’t coming down during breaks to mingle with the people as they did the year before.  It was a grueling taping with many retakes, and must have been hard for the guys considering how exhausted they were.
image
image
When the time was up, they filed out of the room, going right by the front row seating.  When I saw Piero coming toward me I threw all caution to the winds, jumped up and grabbed him, saying “I need another hug” and threw my arms around him, and yes, I admit it, planted a kiss right on his delicious neck.  Friends, before you censure me for being so aggressive let me say in my own defense–after all I’m 87 and it was my birthday--I couldn’t help myself take advantage of the situation.  He gave me a real hug, too--not  just an arm slung across the shoulder, and then he looked me right in the eyes and said, “Happy birthday.”  What a guy!  Amazing, isn’t it, what that can mean to an old gal?  (another major act of kindness on this magical night)
image
image
I have to mention Gianluca’s display of his ever sweet and caring nature as shown when the guys were filing out.  When he came to the woman sitting next to me,  she took his hand and started telling him something that seemed important to her.  It was a long story and she was speaking in Italian.  She held on tightly to him, and although the security guy was telling her in no uncertain terms that Gian had to move on, she didn’t stop.  Darling GG never took his eyes off of her face–he kept smiling sweetly and ignoring security.  He was going to let her have her say.  When she let him go and he moved over to me he smiled and touched my arm and then kept moving…..by then security was about ready to pick him up and move him bodily.
So that was the end of the PBS event and the next day I had to decide what to do about the poster.  It was too big to take on the plane, so I opted for sending it by UPS.  The cost was $75, but I didn’t think twice…..worth every penny.  The boys arrived yesterday, and they are smiling at me now from across the living room.  So it was a “magical night” for me, filled with many blessings.  Just wish all of you Flight Crew friends could have been there, too.
Added note:  I think we have to commend and thank the Detroit Public Broadcasting system for what they have done for the boys by producing the DVD’s over the past few years.  They have brought Il Volo to the attention of the American public.  And I thank them also for putting on the studio event allowing some fans the opportunity to be a party to the unveiling of the new DVD and have a close encounter with the boys.
