Our Final Observations ~ Jane & Marie

A little tidbit that Jane and I forgot to tell you before this final (I promise) wrap-up.  When we were having a chat with Nina we had a little stunned staring moment.  Nina with wide eyes to hear that I had been to 10 concerts and me with even wider eyes to learn she had been to none!

After…
11 planes,
11 trains,
10 taxis’s (two of them water),
2 rental cars,
1 ferry,
2 airport shuttles,
1 bus,
1 gondola
and really tired feet, we have made these observations.

(Please remember these are our opinions only)

* Italians eat late.  Most restaurants are closed until dinner at 7 o’clock all over Italy.

* Italian men and women are better looking than American men and women…by far!  Honest!  Jane tried to take one home in a produce store.  I was going to help.

* They also dress better than us and not just in the fashion districts either.

dscn1463

* THEY HAVE CASTLES!
dscn1730
* They have got to be the worse drivers in the world!  You’ve heard this before.  It’s true!  My newest gray hairs attests to this.

* They will go out of their way to help you and think nothing of getting in their car to lead you to where you need to go.

* Most want to visit N.Y., L.A. and Las Vegas.  Some list Miami, also.

* They love their country very much!

* They show their affection for each other freely. Not just couples either.  Fathers and daughters, sisters and brothers, everyone.  We wish we saw that more in the U.S.

* They use a bidet.

* They put olive oil on everything except Gelato.

* There are two or three Gelato vendors on every block.

dscn1457

* Only Nina’s pizza is better than ours…Well, we think so.

* All of their pasta is better than ours.  Marie tried most of it…for comparative research, of course.  Marie also sampled a few Italian wines.

* Churches, homes, in fact most buildings were built before America was discovered!

dscn1495a

* They put pianos in public places, people pause, sit down and play a while, then go about their business.  We really loved this.

dscn1490

* Their coffee will surely grow hair on your chest.  Jane must have some by now.  (No picture here)

* They mostly live in apartments with flowers and laundry hanging over balconies.

dscn1522

* They have no cows and don’t drink milk.  We saw about six cows our entire trip.  However, they have some really tasty varieties of cheese.  We can’t explain how they do that.  Just some Italian magic we guess.

* Stop lights, stop signs, no passing zones, turn signals, and your car are ignored…completely.

* They have blood red orange juice that Marie fell in love with and will find it in the states…somewhere…somehow.

There is a reason graffiti is an Italian word.  It’s plentiful!

dscn1683

dscn1684

* Their pastry is huge.  A croissant is bigger than your head.

dscn1531

* Most snacks in stores are of the sweet variety.  Ask Jane, she tried most of them.  Umm, research again.

* Their mountains are unbelievably magnificent!   There seems to be an ancient village and church bell tower perched on top of each of them.

* There are hundreds of miles of olive groves and vineyards.

dscn1553

* Have we said they are insane drivers?

* Wear an Il Volo t-shirt in the boys home towns and you are certainly noticed. Everyone is either related to them, went to school with them, played ball with them or sang with them at some time.

* Outside of their home towns Il Volo is NOT very well known.  We were told it’s because they sing old music or they sing mainly in English (?) Yet they fill venues all over their country.

* They have an amazing transit system.  It’s electric, cheap, quiet, comfortable and is everywhere.  Why don’t we have this in the U.S.?

SHHH!
Shhh!

Thank you, everyone for allowing us to share our stories and photo’s.  This was the trip dreams are made of.  It was hard to leave.  With all our hearts we would return!

***END*** (really this time)

A word from Myron re: Il Volo Fan Faire in the new season of 2017.

Jeannette and I had to wait for final word on this from Il Volo. But after talks with Barbara Vitali and other people in Il Volo management, it has been decided that the schedule this year will not allow time for an Il Volo Fan faire – that is one where the boys can attend for the amount of time that they suggested last spring. This tour has caused some frustrations in the planning and that is why it is so late being announced.

Last year’s tour was announced in spring of 2015 and tickets went on sale August of 2015 for a tour in February and March of 2016. This year the announcement goes out today and Monday and Wednesday at the end of November for a tour during the month of March (basically the same time as the last one). That means 3 months of prep for us vrs 7 months last time.

Barbara and we are going to plan further ahead when Il Volo has the next USA tour where the Fan Faire will fit into their schedule easier. So don’t be too sad because in the long run I think this will turn out better with more lead time.

A word about the tour concert in Las Vegas: This year the Vegas concert is being held at the Monte Carlo Hotel Casino where MGM has built a new state-of-the-art concert hall called the Park Theatre. I have seen the place in its finishing stages as it opens in late December. It seats 5200 people and has a huge stage. The Monte Carlo is right on the strip across from the MGM Grand. This place is beautiful and it will be a the largest concert hall in the city (not counting sports arenas).

The Il Volo concert is on Saturday, March 25 (same date at last year only on a Friday) of 2017 at 8:00pm.

TO ANYONE COMING TO VEGAS FOR THE MARCH 25 IL VOLO CONCERT:

Even though there is no Fan Faire per se this year Jeannette and I are planning to do dinner at the Italian restaurant right across the casino from the theater entrance. It is called: “d.Vino” We are aiming for 5:00pm and we invite anyone else that is coming to Vegas for the Il Volo concert to come and join us for dinner and then we walk across the casino to the new Park Theatre for the Il Volo concert.

Everyone is on their own. We will take a tally and make the group reservation for the restaurant. However, everyone that is coming must take care of their own concert tickets, dinner cost and hotel, etc. A chance for us Il Volo fans to get together in a “junior fan faire”. Please email Jeannette or me if you would like to have dinner at “ d.Vino” with us on Saturday, March 25 2017 at 5:00pm.

Nostra Grande Avventura Italiana…Montepagano!

100

20161023_111351

We left Assisi via a cab with Marcello, a friendly Italian, driving us through the countryside to Perugia where we would rent our first car.  After nearly two hours of waiting for our car to be ready we were ready to roll.  Didn’t mind the wait as we were getting used to the Italian way of doing things…relaxed and at their own pace.  Our new best friend, our GPS, was named Missy by Marie.  Marie had studied her road signs and Italian rules of driving very well, but there were times when Missy had a mind of her own telling us to turn a sharp left and go directly into a mountain!  Missy eventually straightened herself out and quickly became a best friend you never wanted to lose!  Marie deserves a gold medal (or a date with Ignazio) for maneuvering her way along the busy autostradas and not being hit off the road by crazy fast drivers!  We also never did quite figure out what the warning signal was that kept beeping on our GPS with a little blue camera icon on it.  All the other cars were going way faster than we were so we figured we couldn’t have been speeding.  Maybe they just like taking pictures of American girls driving Italian cars!

With the help of Missy, we found our way to Montepagano!  We drove up a mighty narrow simple road to finally get there.  Our B&B was just outside the main street of the little village.  The owner, Daniela, greeted us warmly.  She spoke  little English so out came the translators on our phone and ipad that proved to be of great value during this entire trip.

Within one hour of our arriving in this picturesque village we were walking to the town square with Daniela who introduced us to Gianluca’s Nonno, who just happened to be coming out of the cafe.  We were wearing our Il Volo t-shirts so smiles and recognition came quickly to all who saw us.  This dear man opened up an envelope of pictures he had had developed and gave each of us a photo of his precious grandson.  What a gift!     Nonno graciously allowed us to take his picture with us, we thanked him and moved on.  Within 2 more minutes down the street came Ercole right towards us!  Daniela introduced him to us as he lit up seeing our t-shirts!  Marie handed him a Flight Crew web site card and explained who we were, how many people read the site from how many countries world wide.  I thanked him for sharing his son with the world.  He smiled as Daniela translated for us and then let us take a photo with him.  Such kindness in that family.  It’s no wonder they have such wonderful sons!  Then Daniela took us to where the guys filmed their video of  L amore Si Muove, showing us exactly where certain scenes were shot.  I’m sure you will recognize them by the photos as we did.

Then Daniela asks us if we’d like to take a passeggiata?  Of course we would!  So we strolled down the main street and soon came upon another Ginoble!  Uncle Dominic!  He stopped and chatted with us telling us about the oil boats he used to work on in the United States when he was young.  Marie and I were in total awe as we absorbed what was going on around us.  It was all too good to be real, but it really WAS happening!  Daniela’s daughter, Letizia, had joined us for our passeggiata, too.  What a sweet girl.  She had pictures of her with her friend, Gianluca, on her phone that she was very proud of.  We then returned to our B&B for the night and marveled as to what just took place!

The next morning Daniela brought a friend of hers, Anna, to visit with us at breakfast as Anna spoke fairly good English.  Daniela told us that she had seen Ercole this morning and he had asked her if we had plans on going to Sicily also?  We told her we did as that was where we were headed next.  She said she would let him know.  I wrote a short note to Gianluca on the back of a Flight Crew card and gave it to Daniela to give to him next time she sees him.  She happily tucked it into her wallet and said she would be sure he got it.

And so, our first encounter with being Ambassadors of the Flight Crew was a complete success!  Oh yes, how could I forget…within 24 hours of us being with his family members,  Gianluca then said hello to the Flight Crew, their American Fan Club (!) during their interview in New York!  Two very happy ladies headed down the autostrada with Missy, on to their next adventure...Marsala!
