OK – I know everyone would rather see news about our guys, but we still have to eat while we await the return of our beloved Il Volo. IT IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!!!! Yay
In the meantime, let’s eat. Now that summer is upon us and no more snow – let’s cook out – Italian style!!!!!
I received the following from our very own Ann. Thank you, Ann, for your suggestions.
Recipes and picture courtesy the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)
For an APPETIZER, how about:
Grilled Marinated Shrimp
1/4 cup finely chopped garlic, mashed to a paste with 1 teaspoon coarse salt 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves plus sprigs for garnish 3 tablespoons olive oil plus oil for brushing shrimp 16 jumbo shrimp (about 10 per pound) Four 12-inch bamboo skewers Lemon wedges as an accompaniment
In a large bowl stir together garlic, chopped fresh rosemary, and 3 tablespoons oil and add shrimp. Marinate shrimp, covered and chilled, at least 8 hours or overnight. In a shallow dish soak skewers in water to cover 60 minutes and prepare grill. To grill, thread 4 shrimp on each skewer and brush with additional oil. Grill shrimp on an oiled rack, set about 5 inches over glowing coals, 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until just cooked through. Alternatively, brush shrimp with additional oil and grill in a hot well-season ridged grill pan, covered, over moderately high heat 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until cooked through. Garnish shrimp with rosemary sprigs and serve with lemon wedges. Serves 4.
With:
Bruschetta
Olive oil flavored with garlic, fresh basil, or rosemary. 1 loaf of crusty Italian bread cut into 1-inch thick slices 1/4 cup extra -virgin olive oil Prepare barbecue (medium-high-heat). Brush both sides of bread generously With oil; season with salt and pepper. Grill until golden, about 1 minute per side. 6 servings.
For a MAIN COURSE, how about the following:
Chicken Speidini
4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves or chicken cutlets 2/3 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs 1/3 grated pecorino Romano cheese 2 Tbs chopped fresh flat leaf parsley 3-4 tsp lemon zest 2 garlic cloves, minced Good quality mozzarella (not shredded or sliced) Fresh bay leaves or fresh basil Olive oil Melted butter
1. Place chicken breasts between sheets of plastic wrap and pound until very thin. If you are using the cutlets, they do not need to be pounded. 2. Combine bread crumbs, cheese parsley, lemon zest and garlic 3. In another bowl combine even amounts of olive oil and butter 4. Dip chicken into butter mixture and then into the bread crumb mixture 5. Place a chunk of the mozzarella on the meat and roll up tight 6. Slice into 1 inch thick pieces 7. Skewer, using two skewers on each end of the meat to keep it from turning. Using two will make it easier to turn and handle on the grill, as the chicken won’t just roll around the skewer. Skewer the bay leaves around the chicken. 8. Grill over med hot coals, covered, and cook about 5 minutes per side. I use charcoal and have a bottle of water handy for any flare-ups.
It is very important to use fresh ingredients in this recipe. Do not use dry parsley, garlic powder etc. Do not leave out the lemon zest…It is the key ingredient!
Now for some:
Grilled Veggies
3 small yellow squash (about 3/4 pound) 6 Vidalia onions or large shallots, peeled and cleaned and sliced 4 yellow and/or red bell peppers, seeded and each cut into 6 pieces 2 medium red onions, peeled and each cut lengthwise into 6 wedges with root ends intact 2 tablespoons olive oil
In a large bowl toss vegetables with oil and salt and pepper to taste. Grill vegetables in batches on a rack set about 4 inches over glowing coals turning them, 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender, transferring them to a platter as they are done. Serves 6
For DESSERT:
Grilled Peaches with Raspberry Sauce (Pesche Dolci)
5 oz raspberries,- preferably fresh (frozen will do if fresh not available) 1-1/2 tsp lemon juice 2 medium fresh peaches, peel, halved 5 tsp brown sugar 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp butter
In a blender or food processor, process raspberries and lemon juice until pureed. Strain and discard seeds. Cover and chill. Place the peach halves, cut side up, on a large piece of heavy-duty foil (about 18 x 12″). Combine brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle into peach centers. Sprinkle with vanilla; dot with butter. Fold foil over peaches and seal. Grill over medium-hot coals for 15 minutes or until heated through. You can also place in a broiler for 8-12 minutes for a similar result. To serve, spoon the raspberry sauce over peaches.
For BEVERAGE:
Bellini
To make Bellini: 1 ounce white peach puree 5 ounces chilled Prosecco Pour peach puree into a champagne flute, then add the prosecco. The peach puree can either be made from ripe fresh peaches that have been peeled and pureed or you can use a commercial peach puree.
I know – you are all wondering “What is Prosecco?” Prosecco is a sparkling wine, or in other words, Italian Champagne. Prosecco is made from an Italian grape called Glera. Italian tradition dictates that Prosecco is only drunk in the springtime, but I’m sure they won’t mind if it is extended into Summer (wink). Alas, do not fret. If you cannot find Prosecco, a nice Champagne will do.
Mangiare, Bere e Divertirsi (which means Eat, Drink, and be Merry – at least according to Bing)
Well it’s almost here, almost. Concerts are happily coming up quickly!! I know you all have been busy getting ready and I thought I’d help with the preparations 🙂 I thought that you might have overlooked some important do’s and don’ts. I’m here to help (You know me, ever helpful) so here are some hints on how to get ready and more importantly how to have a SMOOTH concert experience!
1) Get your outfit ready now. It’s never too early and you’ll change your mind 50 times anyway.
2) For heavens sake don’t forget your tickets and Meet and Greet passes, I won’t be responsible for your behavior if you do.
3) Practice what you will say to “The Boys” before you go, it might prevent you from giggling uncontrollably.
4) Sign up for one of Marie’s classes on drooling and slobbering. She also has a special class, at an extra charge, on dimple kissing.
5) Have someone in your group bring smelling salts in case you swoon (faint).
6) Do yourself a favor and take your medication before you go, especially those of you on blood pressure pills.
7) Stand in line like ladies and gentleman, no pushing and shoving, that goes for you too, Loretta, no running people over with your walker!
8) If you’re going with others who do not love Il Volo as much as you do, warn them ahead of time of the strange behavior you exhibit when you see them; all that crying, smiling, slobbering and swooning will get you committed.
9) Take a lot of pictures, but try to look sane, your family will appreciate it.
10) For those of you going with Marie and Michele, don’t let them overpower the security guard to reach Ignazio so Marie can jump on the stage while Michele takes her picture!
11) For those of you going with Kelly and Elaine, keep them from carrying Gianluca off to their hotel.
12) For you Piero devotees’ do not grab his red glasses off his face for a souvenir, I somehow don’t think he’d like it.
13) Don’t try passing notes to Barbara, she will not give up the name of their hotel or the room numbers!
14) Marie, Leelee and Marie’s sisters, when you are touring DC please do not leave CD’s of Il Volo blasting “O Solo Mio” at the National Monuments, the Park Service may not like it. During your tour though, it would be a nice touch to leave CD’s blasting “We Are Love” at the White House and Capital Building!
15) Leelee is in charge of the bail money, be nice to her, she decides who gets out of jail for rowdy behavior.
MOST OF ALL ENJOY THE CONCERT(S), STAY SAFE AND OBEY THE LAW, I ONLY HAVE SO MUCH BAIL MONEY!
I hope these little hints help! Oh and say hello to “The Guys” for me!!
Radio Time, Piero 12
Piero on radio time – May, 2014
Hey, Everyone!
We know that Piero is having a birthday pretty soon, and we are starting work on his birthday greeting from The Flight Crew!
We will be making a video for him, and you probably remember the drill, but just in case, here are the guidelines again:
1.) Email us using the “Contact Us” form to let us know that you have a submission for Piero’s 21st Birthday Project. We will e-mail you back with further instructions.
2.) You may submit a video or picture of yourself and your birthday wish for him. All videos must be 10-15 seconds in length and silent. And just a reminder for the younger fans that want to catch his attention…keep in mind that we have a broad audience when shooting your video or taking your picture. Good luck!
3.) If you do not want to be on camera–video or otherwise–you may submit a written greeting instead. We aren’t going to ask you to limit yourself to a certain number of words, but please keep in mind that the music will move at a fairly good clip, and depending on how many comments we receive, I might have to put two to three comments on one slide.
4.) Please submit your greeting by June 15 at the latest to allow time to complete the video, though I would welcome them as soon as possible.
I think that’s it. If you have any questions, please let one of the board members know. 🙂

We are so lucky to have a few photos of some of the very “special” archaeological sites in Sicily taken by our own PIERO! Here are a few more shots by Piero!

MN continues Sicilia Part 2, “The ancient Roman name for Sicily was Trinacria, because of its triangular shape. Sicily has undergone a range of dominations, from Greeks, Romans, Germanic and Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and the Bourbons till the unification of Italy in 1861. Therefore the historical remains of these different cultures, like ancient temples, theaters, ancient statues and Barocan churches can be found in archeological sites, museums and cities around the island.” Thank you MN for your contribution to Sicilia Part 2! Michele
Here I am back on the bus on the way to another archaeological site in Sicilia!
Greek archaeological site of Selinunte
We finally get to eat overlooking the beautiful beach above with the ruins of Selinunte in view!
“On the south west coast of Sicily, not far from Mazara del Vallo, lies one of the largest and most impressive archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. On a par with pretty much anything found in Greece itself, Selinunte has lain abandoned for over 2,000 years, its numerous temples, acropolis and agora in dignified ruins… Selinunte is beautifully located, sitting on a high plain and overlooking the sea. It is flanked on either side by golden beaches.” Read more:
It was a busy week for the guys as they did a promotional tour through Sicily. While I am, of course, counting down the days until they are on our side of the world again, I can’t help but be excited for them that they are able to promote themselves and spend some time doing what they love in the country they love most.
Once Gianluca had finally packed his stuff, chatted with all the fans until the wee hours of the night and then was so sleepy that he fell asleep on the way to the airport the next morning (gotta love it! 😀 ), he safely joined his Il Volo brothers, and things got off to a pretty quick start.
First up, the Insemie TV show hosted by Salvo La Rosa.
I, unfortunately, was at work when this was taking place, and many of our readers were watching live (I’m a little bitter; I’m not gonna lie.), so I’m very thankful for Humildemente Ilvolover taking the time to share this on YouTube.
All About Il Volo has written a nice summary of the event that you can
Next up, Taormina, where they held a couple of press conferences and announced a 2nd concert date to be held on July 21st, as July 20th has already sold out! The guys seemed to each be in love with the city, Piero and Gianluca both tweeting several pictures of the beautiful scenery.

Naturally, The Guys have some very pointed and direct things to say about finally being able to come home to their people and have their families see them in concert and about how they want to be perceived and thought of. They have definitely come of age, and I love seeing them speak out as the men they have become. Maybe I’m a sap, but I think you will too. Thanks, once again, to All About Il Volo for the article.
To listen to the interview, click the play button as shown here. It will take several seconds to start playing.

And that was their whirlwind Tour of Sicily. Congrats to them for finally–truly–going home.
Ignazio Celebrates a Birthday by Playing Soccer
All Things Il Volo
On May 21, Ignazio was back in Marsala celebrating the Birthday of Nino Barraco as a guest in a soccer match. I, for one, love it when I get to see celebrities do things they love outside of what they are known for, so I have enjoyed the pictures of this handsome soccer player very much. Maybe between our guys and Rafa (who is also a soccer nut), I’ll get into it after all. 😉
Head over to All About Il Volo for the full photo gallery and to see links of articles talking about the match.
