TOO FAR??? By Mary Bohling

Have I gone too far over the edge when I would rather spend the day on the computer watching everything Il Volo than doing anything else?

Am I too far gone when I don’t know what is happening in the world, because video clips of Il Volo concerts replace watching the news on TV?

too far

Am I misplacing my priorities when I refuse to answer the doorbell, because I haven’t done any housework, since it cuts into the time with my guys?

Have I left reality and moved into another time zone when I realize that I have missed going to my card group again, because I was so immersed in watching all of my Il Volo DVDs that I forgot to go?

too far 5

Is my family going to commit me, because I keep calling them Piero and Gianluca and Ignazio instead of their real names, and not just the men?

Are my friends going to abandon me, because I cut them short when they call so I can get back to something “Il Volo-ish?”

too far 3

Will it drive family and friends to call the men in white coats when I keep drifting off during conversations, because they are all so boring compared to having delightful thoughts about my guys?

Have I lost all track of time when I keep asking every day, “Is it March 24 yet?”

too far 2

Have I completely left my world and crossed over into fantasy land when I
introduce myself as Mrs. Barone?

Maybe I need to see a shrink, but I’m not quite ready to be cured of living in Il Volo Land just yet….not today…..maybe tomorrow……maybe not…..probably not……..

Time for a break.

Why I Want to Join the Flight Crew

I received this lovely letter and wanted to “Share the Love” with all of you.
What do you think Crew?  Shall we let her in?

***
Hi Marie,

My friend Ann Scavo suggested I send you an email to tell you why I want to join the Flight Crew. Well here goes…..

For a couple of years, Ann has been talking about Il Volo. In November she told me to watch the Buon Natale special on PBS. All it took was hearing and seeing these amazing young men sing “Ave Maria”. It made me cry and like a great book, I haven’t been able to put them down since.

I grew up in an Italian home where my mom taught me to love Italian music through artists like Mario Lanza and Jerry Vale. She also loved Placido Domingo and Andrea Boccelli (who we took her to see shortly before she died). Dad was a ballroom dancer who shared with us the classics like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett. They also taught us that family is everything and a huge part of why I love Il Volo so much is that it makes me  think of my parents and remember them with love, tradition and lots of smiles. They would have loved these young men who are successfully sharing their culture and beautiful voices with the world. I am in love with their music as well as their spirit, their kind souls, and the magic they seem to make all of us feel.

I look forward to the day I can meet this trio to see for myself if my observations of them is spot on. I see Piero as powerful in not only voice but personality. I see Ignazio as having an infectious personality (as we all just can’t get enough of him) and I see Gianluca as having a passionate about everything he touches, personality.

I am sure I am not telling you anything you don’t already know but I just had to share some thoughts with you about our favorite guys and how happy their music makes me feel.

Thank you.
Lisa

We saw our loves…tonight! (Detroit Fox 2/27)

“My heart is full until the next time….,” I said, when I wrote about our night on July 6, 2015 at PBS! Yes, it was time for a refill!

Just about 6 weeks after that momentous night, the tickets for the February 27 concert went on sale. We had already gotten our tickets from PBS, but did not know what kind of seats they were, just that they were main floor and included the meet/greet. Just for a lark, I went on Ticketmaster and looked at the tickets. They were for sale to the public that Friday, August 21st, I believe. It was after 4p and I couldn’t believe my eyes! What do I see? The very last two seats in the front row, orchestra pit! Talk about OMG! I looked again and they had disappeared! What? No! Suddenly, they reappeared again. Ok, this is fate, they are mine and I hesitated not a second longer. “I felt the credit card in my hand, and they were no more!” (Delilah? Lol)  Luckily, PBS took my tickets back, as they were just about the same price as the front row with meet/greet VIP package, so only a difference of about $50!

Then, we wait…Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Gianluca’s birthday, Valentine’s day, wow, it was coming soon! Five, four, three, two, one, blast off – down to Detroit we went! It was IV-Day!

We arrived just before 7p at the fabulous Detroit Fox Theatre. If you’ve never been, it is pretty incredible. We got our tickets from will call and go into the doors, held open by the doorman. We find our VIP table, get our little gifts of a small tote bag with their picture on it, along with an actual hand-signed/autographed badge with their picture on it, so we could get into the meet/greet. You could barely make out their signatures, if they hadn’t been signed over their pictures on the badge, it would have been nearly impossible to tell whose was whose!

They opened the doors about 7:10p, so we were able to mingle a bit, find some other fans we knew and then make our way to our seats. Yes, we walked, and walked, and the stage kept getting closer and closer! Holy Toledo – someone was in our seats! That was quickly resolved and we sat down. We were directly in front of the speakers – I thought this would be a bad thing, but I must be going deaf, because it was perfect and I heard every word and it wasn’t overly loud at all. I could almost literally touch the stage and was certainly less than 3 feet from it! Pretty amazing! We were kind of half way, in the middle of the row to the right of the stage – right in front of where Maestro conducted the orchestra.

song list

We did some more mingling, found where others were sitting and took some pictures. I did get a picture of the songlist – apparently it’s taped to the stage. Ok, I’m a real novice when it comes to concerts, never been that close to the stage! I looked at the time and it was about 5 to 8 and the orchestra was not even out there yet? However, an eagle-eyed person spied the guys looking from the wings of the stage and could see Ignazio and Piero. I’m like “where, where?” Then I saw them, too. I did a girlish wave and said “hi-i…” I have no idea if they saw me. Lol!

Finally, about 8p or so, the orchestra started coming on stage. That night in Detroit, there was something going on at about every major venue downtown and traffic and parking were a nightmare! So, there were many people that were late. That is probably what the guys were looking at – many empty seats! So, to give people a chance to get to their seats, the concert didn’t really start until about 8:20p or so. But that was not a big deal. I turned around and waved to my 2 friends from work in the balcony and she texted that they saw me! Said they could not miss that periwinkle blue!

Then the orchestra started and the overture to Grande Amore. That was pretty awesome…that ended and the intro to Volare was starting and out came the guys, first Gianluca, then Piero, then Ignazio! I stood up and was clapping and dancing (the only one) and when Gianluca came out he saw me and pointed to me and smiled! Then the blasted security made me sit down! Hrmph! Ok, I was not happy. Oh, well…. I was not fond of the Fox personnel…

As I’d mentioned, it started late, so people were still streaming in, a half hour into the concert. Piero, in his cute little Sicilian accent, started making jokes…..after they had sung the 2nd song, he says, “so, should we start over so the new people can hear what they missed?” After the 3rd song he says, “don’t worry, you didn’t miss a thing, that was our first song!” Then after a few more songs he says, “we will come to your house and sing for another 30 minutes after the show!” Of course, the people that were there thought it was pretty funny and we were laughing, but as I think about it now, those people coming in late, probably didn’t think it was too funny?

Ok, I have to say something about the lights – they were awful at times! I was in the front row, so I thought we were the only ones affected, but my dad, about 10 rows back, and my friends in the balcony, all said the same thing! They were really blinding when the bright, white strobing light was in your eyes. While singing L’Immensita, Ignazio was on my side of the stage, almost right in front of me. The light also was right in my eyes. I literally had to shade my eyes to watch him sing. I didn’t take any pictures at that point because I thought he’d come back to my side, but he never did – at least not standing still!igna tonight

Yes, they, or I should say Ignazio, got crazy with Delilah! Ignazio goes over to the Maestro (and yes, it’s all planned – I could see them talking right before), takes the baton away from him and does his crazy thing of conducting the orchestra. He’s all over the place and then Piero comes to the right of the Maestro and then takes his microphone and puts it under Ignazio’s chin – don’t think that one was too planned, if so, it went awry! He ended up hitting Ignazio pretty hard under the chin with the butt end of the mic. Ignazio’s reaction? He kept conducting the orchestra and when it came to the part where he sings “he felt the knife in his hand and she laughed no more…” Ignazio replaced the “she” with “he laughed no more” meaning Piero! Lol! But all in good fun? Later on Ignazio kept feeling under his chin and we couldn’t figure out why – we think it really hurt and he was checking for blood or something?

Every song they sang was magnificent! How did they sound? Well, if I said they were anything less than the perfection we expected, I would be very wrong! They and their voices were positively awesome! They added a special nuance here and there to various songs – new notes to crave for the next time we hear them. What can I say, Ignazio was perfection personified. His rendition of Tonight was flawless. You could hear every “t” in every tonight, what, bright, and light! We saw our loves last night and Ignazio certainly sang with his heart on his sleeve in Tonight for Alessandra! Ignazio even got teary-eyed in 3 songs – not even Alleria! Lol! Igna and Gian were doing the intro to Unchained Melody and doing a little back and forth, not even banter, so to speak and Igna was saying how great love was and everyone should be in love, he asked the audience “how many here tonight are with someone they love?” He looks then says “can you do it again, because I could not see a thing!” Then they brought up the house lights! He says “good luck!”…then he asked Gian if he was ready, Gian said yes, and started singing. Then I watched Igna as he gently took his finger and carefully wiped a tear from his left eye. Although, don’t you usually cry from both eyes?? Hmm…. No, pretty sure it was a tear! Lol! I think he teared up on Tonight and Memory, as well. He sang Memory with a different passion this time, like a longing, almost – probably for his love… Caruso was so moving; the ending, so passionate! I really wanted to stand up after that one (funny, the guys were kind of standing there expecting someone to stand up, but I don’t think anyone did), but most of the audience was a dud and they pretty much only stood after the solos or duets, which was pretty sad. I also kind of felt like a Mexican jumping bean standing up after so many and after Gian’s last solo, I just stayed in my seat.

LynnK, Not Groupish and Without Phone-itis in Albany

lynnK albany 3

Hey Crew!

Sorry I didn’t post anything about the Albany concert. Other people said just about everything that could be said and I didn’t take many pics because I wanted to enjoy the concert without “phoneitis!”

I didn’t do the M&G, but people I talked to after said it was very short and hustled. Their buses were parked next to the theater and they got on and headed to NY.  Not one stitch of advertising on the buses or equipment trucks. Definitely a missed advertising opportunity. If I’d hung around a little while I’m sure I’d have seen them but I didn’t want to be groupyish (?)

The third nite they were in Albany they stayed at the Hilton which is where I stayed the next nite. So I missed seeing them there by one nite! By the time I checked in they had left for their sound check! Or I chickened out! Take your pick! One of the parking valets said that when they all checked in it was a loud, yakking bunch of Italians!

I also talked to some of the members of the orchestra and told them how great they sounded.  One of the violinists accompanied Piero and Igna for their duet on O Paese d’ O sole and he was terrific. He put as much emotion in his playing as they did in their singing. For me that was the best song of the concert! Nobody seems to be posting about it. They really acknowledged him, patted him on the back and said grazie, grazie to him! I told him what a great job he did! He smiled, said thanks and seemed a little shy and embarrassed! I said thanks to other members. They are with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. There were thirteen of them.

I took some photos of their buses and the equip trucks on my phone.  I walked around the corner of the the theater and they were all lined up there.

lynnK albany 2

Also a black stretch limo was just closing it’s doors. Alot of serious looking security! I think it was Governor Cuomo. He’s Italian and I’m sure he met them at the Columbus Day parade in NY.  He comes up to the Saranac Lake/ Lake Placid area frequently for short rests. He and his daughters ski and hang out. I stopped to get gas and looked over at the next pump and there he was filling up his own vehicle. Just him, no one else around him! No security, nothing! Gave him a thumbs up!

I had watched so many concert videos on the various Il Volo sites that when they appeared at the top of the stairs with the lights and smoke and music it seemed like another video. Such a sense of unreality! I said to myself ” You better wake up! This is the real thing this time!” I was in the seventh row which was great. Close but not too close so I could see them, the band and orchestra. The Maestro was there which surprised me. I thought Albany might be too small for him but sure enough he was there! It was funny to see Igna do his orchestra conducting thing! Holy Cow! his voice just soars! Hearing him in person you can really hear what a powerful, musical capacity he has. Somewhere I read that he is working with Piero’s opera coach. You can here it in his voice, breathing and opened chest that wasn’t there before. I can’t wait to see how well he and the other two develop over the years! And I can’t wait to read what Myron says after the Vegas concert!

The orchestra seats were mostly an older crowd and it seemed a little subdued. I was worried the guys would think we were a bunch of duds! I couldn’t see the balcony from where I was so I don’t know how they were reacting. They got quite a few standing O’s but I think a lot of the older ones just couldn’t get up from their seats. There was a lady in a wheel bed type thing at the side and all three of them went off the stage to talk to her. Piero asked her a few questions. Couldn’t really hear. Can you imagine the effort to get her and the bed thing into the theater. There were several sets of stairs to get into the main part of the theater and they must have had to pick it and her up those stairs. A real fan!

Over all it was just fantastic! Can’t wait to go to another of their concerts!
See Ya!

Wonderfully Exhausted ~ Jeannette’s Detroit Experience

a Jeannette - Detroit

Hello my Il Volo Family…

I am back from Detroit and am totally exhausted from my four wonderful days in Detroit … What a wonderful feeling it is to be this tired from non stop enjoyment…

My adventure started by being picked up at the airport by Il Volo Sister Donna Sabo… She was waiting for me at baggage claim and I walked right up to her like I had known her for years… No one would ever think we had never actually met… We hugged and laughed and just felt like we had know each other always.. .That is the Magic of the Il Volo Connection…The beautiful thing is that the feeling of connection lasted through out my stay with her in Detroit… She is just the most beautiful person inside and out… We had a great day on Friday together along with her sweet and charming cousin Kathy who is just as kind and lovely as Donna… She accepted me with open arms… We laughed we ate, we laughed we shared some vino, we laughed till the wee hours of the morning…

Saturday, we spent a relaxed morning packing and then getting ready to head to the Westin Hotel in Downtown Detroit… It is only a few blocks from the Fox theater… This was the best decision we had ever made even though Donna does not live far from Detroit… Many of our Il Volo sisters were staying at the Westin, and thanks to Joanie Greenspan calling me and making arrangements to meet at the Westin, we were able to meet so many more of our Il Volo Family… Again we laughed, we ate, we drank the vino…

Off to the Fox theater … We got into a cab at the hotel and off to the Fox we went… We were there in less than five minutes even though the traffic was difficult.. Our Cab driver was very nice, and he did not even turn on the meter… He just was happy to get us there in spite of the congestion and so we tipped him well for his efforts… I bring this to the attention of everyone so that you will know if you are going to an Il Volo concert in a big city, please either get a hotel room a close to the venue or give yourself time to get to the venue hours before curtain time, find a restaurant within walking distance and relax then go to the concert in plenty of time… There was so much going on in Downtown Detroit the night of the concert that hundreds of people could not get to the theater on time, could not find parking and had to park more than a mile away from the venue and missed some of the concert… Thanks to our picking the Westin Hotel to spend Saturday and being only a few blocks from the theater, we avoided a heart breaking situation…

There are no words in the English Dictionary that can describe the concert I was at, at the most beautiful Theater I have ever had the pleasure of being in…

“Il Volo era assolutamente il migliore che abbia mai avuto, hanno esse stesse hanno fatto un centinaio di volte … Erano belle, sembrava incredibile e erano così divertente e affascinante sul palco che si voleva solo correre su per abbracciarlo”

Okay, I got carried away because of these Italian charmers… So in English…
“Il Volo was absolutely the best they have ever been, they out did themselves with every song they sang…. They were beautiful, sounded incredible and were so funny and charming on stage that you just wanted to run up and hug them”

I loved every minute they were on stage, they did not disappoint… Every song was perfect and incredible… Every song just brought your heart to new heights… My goodness, the solo’s  brought tears to my eyes as each one shined in their own light as they brought their solo’s to life with their skilled voices and incredible delivery… The Duets were just as amazing, and of course put all three together for a song and what do you have? ” Our three charming and beautiful men of IL Volo with the three most beautiful voices in the world…

The meet and greet? Well it was fast and as always you want more time with the guys.. But they were as always, Charming, gracious and happy that we took the time be with them for a moment and take a picture with them.. They are still the most caring and thoughtful young men you ever want to meet… And I promise you, you do want to meet them… So if you are planning a concert in the future, please try to get a meet and greet to go along with it…

The night ended with a bunch of us Il Volo sisters going back to the Westin for one more glass of Vino and share our wonderful moments of the concert with each other before going up to our rooms to dream of the most incredible three young men who gave their all so that we would have the most wonderful concert of our lives… That is just what Il Volo does !!!
