I received this lovely letter and wanted to “Share the Love” with all of you. What do you think Crew? Shall we let her in?
***
Hi Marie,
My friend Ann Scavo suggested I send you an email to tell you why I want to join the Flight Crew. Well here goes…..
For a couple of years, Ann has been talking about Il Volo. In November she told me to watch the Buon Natale special on PBS. All it took was hearing and seeing these amazing young men sing “Ave Maria”. It made me cry and like a great book, I haven’t been able to put them down since.
I grew up in an Italian home where my mom taught me to love Italian music through artists like Mario Lanza and Jerry Vale. She also loved Placido Domingo and Andrea Boccelli (who we took her to see shortly before she died). Dad was a ballroom dancer who shared with us the classics like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett. They also taught us that family is everything and a huge part of why I love Il Volo so much is that it makes me think of my parents and remember them with love, tradition and lots of smiles. They would have loved these young men who are successfully sharing their culture and beautiful voices with the world. I am in love with their music as well as their spirit, their kind souls, and the magic they seem to make all of us feel.
I look forward to the day I can meet this trio to see for myself if my observations of them is spot on. I see Piero as powerful in not only voice but personality. I see Ignazio as having an infectious personality (as we all just can’t get enough of him) and I see Gianluca as having a passionate about everything he touches, personality.
I am sure I am not telling you anything you don’t already know but I just had to share some thoughts with you about our favorite guys and how happy their music makes me feel.
Thank you.
Lisa

Oh Lisa, you are so one of us! Welcome to the Flight Crew!
~Marie
I posted these thoughts on ATIL, but felt I would share with my friends here as well. This was in regard to the ongoing concern about what appears to be a lack of promotion for Il Volo’s USA tour. I don’t disagree with that, but at the same time I find it interesting that thus far, their shows have been sellouts. I think this fact, in itself, speaks volumes about the powers of word of mouth respect for true, captivating artistry. What do you think?
I certainly do not, in any way, pretend to be knowledgeable concerning the inner workings of building Il Volo’s career. I’m simply an amazed, grateful, hence devoted follower of three extraordinary young men who have been bless with a huge bounty of talent, intelligence, kindness, and an awareness of the human heart. They are devoted to music, real music, and through that vane they possess an uncanny ability to immediately touch those hearts in such a way that your very soul responds, sometimes with tears.of undeniable joy. Why? Because it’s offered with honest love, deep humility, and passion. I can’t help but feel that their ever increasing success, lack of material promotion or not, has more to do with their inner awareness of an intended purpose for them in this world; bigger than promos or even sales. Those are the characteristics noticed and felt by their audiences. That caliber of love and devotion promotes itself. It is not dependent on promotional exposure, but instead, thrives on the subsequent renewal of compassion that is ultimately discovered within the hearts of humanity itself.
REAL, is a welcomed commodity sorely lacking in our world today; something we we are seeing less and less of. Il Volo is a wonderful, and needless to say, refreshing gift to us. A gift that is having a gigantic influence because people are searching for the “real” and positive examples. Authenticity brings hope and encouragement, something especially true for our youth. Il Volo will continue to excel in those endeavors under wise, and loving guidance of people who love and care for them; but their very nature, well, that was placed in them a long time ago. It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words. Okay, take your pictures promoters, if you will, but it is also said that actions speak louder than words (or pictures), and that is what touches the soul. Real, is an experience. Real makes the difference, and brings tears. THAT’S THE BEST PROMOTION they can get, and I can give. Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio, you are loved!
This is not a review of a concert. It is a love letter, pure and simple.
If the mere thought of a woman deeply, emphatically, amazingly in love with three young men whose ages added together still do not reach her years on earth, makes you roll your eyes, turn away now and read no further.
How can I tell you how wonderful they really are? How could I possibly make it clearer than those of you who already know and have written about hearing, seeing, touching and once again falling in love with those Guys this concert season?
Well, Leelee, Ineke and I fell hard for them in Miami. What can I say? They were magnificent! No… Better than magnificent.. They were astoundingly brilliant! I don’t know how their voices could be fuller and richer than the last time I was privileged to experience IL Volo, but they were. El Trieste was a surprise and before the second chorus the Guys became blurry and I had to wipe the tears away.
Their friend and artist, Fabio was on stage and did a wonderful drawing of the Guys while they were singing.
Note he drew it upside down
Meet & Greet was quick. Just a hug, a cheek kiss, a few words and it was over. The really good part was when Piero looked at me and said, “Good to see you again.” He remembered me! I couldn’t get to the car fast enough before the tears came.
The next night the Guys were in Tampa. That’s where Ignazio tripped and hurt his shoulder. We didn’t attend that one, but we looked at pictures they published when they arrived in Ft. Myers. Leelee, being just a fine sleuth, thought the photo’s looked like the Hyatt. So we canceled previously made reservations, called the Hyatt and took off from Palm Beach!
Upon arriving we wondered if we had indeed chosen the correct hotel. Well, my “find the Boys” luck held out once again. As we walked up to the desk there was Mrs. Bochetto and Fabio (the artist) getting change to do some laundry. We said hello. Actually I said, “Hello my mother-in-law in my next life.” Fortunately she doesn’t understand English and I was saved by our language differences. Leelee and Ineke just shook their heads. I’m sure Fabio told her what the crazy stalker lady said. Fabio (what a looker!) stood around talking to us and posing for pictures. We were hungry and was eating when one of the guitar players (Patricio?) came out and spoke with us for a while.
Patricio (?) and Fabio at the Hyatt
Man oh man! Are all Italians that good looking? I think it was he who mentioned rehearsals at the venue soon. So you can imagine that we weren’t about to leave that lobby/dining area! In fact we wondered why no other fans had figured out where the Guys were. Sure enough we soon saw Pappa Barone and said a quick hello.
Fabio & Ineke, Poppa and Leelee
Then the band members came to hang out in the lobby. I asked if we could please take a couple of photo’s. They seemed pleased to be asked. Funny thing… The drummer misunderstood my request and tried to move out of my way. I said, “No, you.” he just beamed.
Next Piero came out and sat down. I asked for a photo and he immediately jumped up. I told him to just stay seated. He said “No, no” and came over to us. He looked at me and said, “I know you. We met in a gym on the..” he couldn’t remember the word for treadmill and made the motions.. I said, “treadmill” and he said, “right.” The only thing he couldn’t remember was where we were. I told him Milwaukee and he said, “Right, it’s cold there.” I handed Leelee my camera to take our photo and apparently she wasn’t holding it correctly. Piero kept giving her instructions on how to use it. I was hoping the instructions would last a day or two because he was holding on to me the entire time. I told him that I guessed that by now he knew all there was to know about cameras. He laughed (Oh what beautiful teeth!) and agreed. I said I would see him next in Las Vegas and also mentioned the Fan Faire.
He was called away by someone and soon Ignazio wandered out with his luggage.
His arm was in a sling from his injury the night before. We only said hello and asked how he was feeling. He said pretty good and that it was only a muscle pull. Barbara came out and we said hello to her. Everyone piled into a couple of vans and left. We wondered why we hasn’t seen Gianluca, but soon, trailed by his mom, out he flew obviously late. We just nodded to him and received a brilliant smile in return.
We couldn’t believe our luck that afternoon.
The concert that night was, of course, wonderful again. Ignazio’s shoulder gave comic fodder for the other two. The first thing that happened was someone brought out a black cloth with a crime scene body chalk line (and mustache) on it. They laid it on the stage where the “crime” happened. They all cracked up. Ignazio and the other two were comically cautious with his arm and many funny movements were made during the performance. He took the sling off while singing “Tonight”, but it was back on after the song.
They told a story about hiring an Uber car the day before so Piero and Gianluca could go to the beach. Piero started singing in the back and the driver said he should try and sing an IL Volo song. They convinced him that they were IL Volo and I guess he lost it. How proud Piero and Gianluca looked relating the story. They had the Uber driver stand up in the audience and they all gave him a big thumbs up.
Again, a swift Meet & Greet where Ineke held their attention with sweet gifts made by the Zulu people of South Africa. Gianluca loved it and apparently looked strait into her eyes. I know that because she has reminded me SEVERAL times since.
I met several Flight Crew Folks at those two concerts. I even met some really nice members from the Miami Fan Club who upon meeting me said, “IL Volo Flight Crew! You guys are legend!”
That evenings performance by our Guys was so spectacular we all cried for a while on the way home the next day.
I have to tell you all this little story although I have completely forgotten who told it to me. The story is that she was speaking with Barbara and told her that she got emotional whenever the Boys sang. Barbara told her that she has seen them through 400 concerts and still cries every time. I guess that sums up the power that is IL Volo.
Ineke and I left Florida and our wonderful friend and host, Leelee. We flew to my home in Ohio. Tomorrow we begin the second leg of our journey and venture to new York City. Ineke’s only request, besides the Guys, was to see the 911 Memorial. So we will spend a few days there before our train trip to Las Vegas. The Fan Faire will be topped only by another glorious concert. Then I’ll take off for home and Ineke for South Africa.
You have to know that If I were younger… If I was one-third my age… I would fight for one of them and I would surely win! But alas, if they are happy and treated with love and kindness and honesty and understanding then I am happy too. Be aware, however, if not treated exactly as I expect them to be, I have a ready passport.
After all who among us isn’t anxious to see the next generation IL Volo? For Gian to see that sweet smile we have always seen on his face repeated. Will Piero Jr. cry in operatic tones? Will little Inga continually jump out of his crib?
Soon my darlings, soon you will all be mine again. I will see you again in two weeks. Where you will, in a crowded theater, once again, Sing to me and me alone.
Piero did his requisite “go stand on a chair in the audience routine” for O Sole Mio, so missed part of that. Lol! But somehow he got back to the stage, which I missed and brought the little girl up?
Girl in O Sole Mio!
During “Piove” they brought a “little” girl up on stage, but she was not so little! Lol! She was taller than Gianluca and almost as tall as Piero. Her name? Maria! Gian starts singing “I just met a girl named Maria….”Piero asked her how old she was and she said 14. Piero says, “I am 22 and you are 14 and you are almost as tall as I am!” Then they look at her feet to see if she had on heels or something and I think she was in her socks or booties of some kind, so no heels there! Lol!
During one of the earlier songs, I’m sorry, can’t remember which one, Ignazio comes over to the Maestro and they chit chat for a few seconds. Then I kind of hear “are you ready?” Next thing I know, Ignazio is facing the crowd, Maestro is conducting, and suddenly Ignazio gives Maestro a little “hip bump!” Then, in perfect unison, they are moving back and forth hip to hip to the beat of the music! Literally perfectly orchestrated! 🙂 Yeah, wish I would have gotten that one! Several missed photo ops, unfortunately!
Delilah!
I think it was right before Beautiful That Way, when they all sit on the stage, poor Gianluca is trying to gracefully get down to sit on the stage. He tries one way, then another, and finally says “sorry, my pants are too tight!”They really didn’t look tight though – he was wearing jeans, but they must have been a bit stiff? He eventually plops down on the stage. Then during another song, he managed to get down from the stage, but then could not get up again. They did not put any steps up to the stage and it was pretty high. So the security guard had to get a chair for him to stand on, so he could get back up there! The perils of being short!?
The Godfather routine…even though some say it was a bit drawn out, I have to say it was cute and I liked it. Again, I think Igna had too much bread in his mouth and you could see he kept swallowing and he was coughing here and there. He did though, get Gianluca to kiss his ring! Sorry, Nashville, happened in Detroit first! Was funny, Gianluca asked the audience if he should kiss the “Godfather’s” ring and we all said yes. Apparently, someone said no and Igna says “why you say no?” Igna was saying because now he is 21, he should kiss his ring…
Godfather…
After they were done singing Eternally, Piero and Gian were introducing Ignazio to sing his next solo and Piero was saying how when they were on tour with Barbra, Ignazio fell in love with her, then he tried to correct himself saying Igna fell in love with the song. He relates this to Igna and says “what’s the difference?”Igna said something I did not catch and then says he didn’t have enough money for the lawyers! Lol! Of course, they joke around and Igna does not want him to tell the audience the name of the song, but of course, as Piero is leaving to go up the steps, he shouts out “Memory!”
Igna was also certainly due for a haircut, as he kept doing the hand/hair slide throughout the whole concert. Looks like he got it cut for Nashville? Hmmm… he should be just about due for one in Vegas? Won’t we be lucky? 🙂
But, I am sorry to say, and as fantastic as they were, I still felt a bit disappointed, because they did not sing a few of the songs we really wanted to hear. For those that said they will be happy with whatever they sing – well, I’m sorry, I cannot totally agree. You still hoped that they might just make one little change to the song list, but no, they did not.
(I just want to add a little disclaimer…Please don’t beat me up here for what you are about to read. But this is how I truly felt at the time, and I wanted to be honest. I was also speaking to a few other Detroit gals, and they felt the same way – but I will keep their names secret to protect the guilty… I have the utmost love and respect for these guys and would defend them to the end, as if they were my own!)
It’s like this….
Think back to a time, whether it be a birthday, Christmas, or other occasion, when you got LOTS of presents, more than you could have ever imagined! You laughed and smiled and said many thank yous. But with each present you opened, you kept expecting it to be that one, special gift, you just had your heart set on. You had cake and ice cream and your favorite dinner and friends and family all around. It was the best birthday/Christmas ever! (or was it?) You made everyone think you were happy, and why shouldn’t you be? Here is why… there was this one gift that you wanted, ever so badly. It didn’t even cost very much, at least in your eyes, and there was one person you really thought was going to get it for you. But, it didn’t happen… and, unfortunately, as you lay down to sleep that night, thinking of all the wonderful gifts, food, family, and friends; you still felt a little cheated and disappointed, because you didn’t get that one little gift. It was really all that you wanted and you thought you gave everyone really big hints on what it was, even told someone directly! You’d take everything back, if you could get that one little gift. Before you go to sleep, you thank God for a wonderful day and feel very blessed to have your friends and family around you. You remind yourself, that others aren’t that lucky. They don’t get the presents we do, or maybe no celebration at all? So, you will go to sleep, convincing yourself that you are happy and thankful. The feeling of disappointment will fade – eventually; and your life will go on.
With each song they sang, it meant our gifts were quickly disappearing one by one, until the final, big gift we were all waiting for – Grande Amore! It was certainly grand and was incredible to actually see and hear them sing it live! Then, all too soon, it was over. I didn’t think I was going to be bold enough to stick my hand out there at the end, but it’s the one little perk of being in the front row! Sure enough, here they came, giving all the front-rowers a “low” five… here comes Gian – smack! Here comes Piero – smack! Here comes Ignazio – smack! Oh, yes, that was pretty fun. Oddly, both Gian’s and Piero’s hands were cold, however, Ignazio’s was very warm! And then, it was really over!
I will tell you about my meet/greet experience – it was quick! When we signed in to the VIP table, the OMGVIP guy was actually very nice and I asked him about taking pictures, etc. He said they discouraged selfies with the guys, but we could take pictures if we wanted to give someone else our cameras, etc. He also said to wait and someone would come and get us. Well, the Fox and OMG must not have been communicating very well, because when the concert was over, security made us move to the back and other side of the theatre and we just followed the crowd. They told us later they needed to clear the stage and our seats, blah, blah. So we moved and sat down again. After about 10 minutes or so, they told us to move again, so we did. Then the security guy at the end of our row says “ok, you 2 rows need to move into the aisle now and get in line.” We were a bit confused, because just before that the OMG person said we would be taken in groups of 15-20 and could get extra pictures if we wanted? Not the case – so we got in line, not knowing where we were going yet, except we were heading toward the exit doors. As we moved up in the line, we started seeing flashing, so we figured it was up ahead. Where they had the meet/greet was really bad. It was a small area off the main lobby, with very low lighting – just a few ornamental chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and maybe a few sconces on the walls. Barbara passed us twice as we were waiting in line. She is really quite pretty!Yes, we were herded along like the proverbial cattle. They kept pushing you ahead even before the person ahead of you was done! Right before it was my turn, they kept trying to push us up there and Piero is like “wait, wait, I need a moment…” He then went over to his dad to say something, then he went back in his “place.” When it came to my time with the guys, anything I had planned to say or do, went totally out of my mind. I felt very rushed. All I could manage to sputter out was“you were wonderful tonight!” to each one of them, speaking in this kind of dazed monotone voice, while I shook their hands. Yes, I said“shook” their hands! No hugs. My shyness, once again, taking over. I guess I was still pretty overwhelmed by the concert and still in the hypnotic state as soon as I saw them. My dad was with me and I remember going to Gian first, as he was on the left, Piero, in the middle and Ignazio on the right. I said hello to Piero next and said “this is my dad.” Piero did something I thought was so sweet, he says, “hi, dad!” to my dad, and then my dad shakes his hand and gives him a hug!I’m standing there thinking, gee, missed Piero again, but my Dad gives him a hug! (I talked to my dad later, and even he said it was all a blur to him also!) Lol! I then walked over to Ignazio and shook his hand as well. Ok, no hugs, but there is something special about skin to skin contact! Next thing I knew they were tapping you on the shoulder to turn around and smile! Next! As I turned around to leave, I looked at Ignazio. He had his phone in his hand, but was staring into my eyes, like he was trying to recognize me maybe, from PBS? It was only the 2nd time I’d seen him, although he saw me in the front row for an hour!? He just stared, but didn’t say anything. It seemed an eternity, but I’m sure it was only for a few seconds. As I looked back into those piercing, brown eyes, I said, “see you in Vegas!” He just looked at me and had this funny look on his face?” and kind of grunted – didn’t really say anything. And that was it…but my last memory will be those beautiful, brown eyes, shining at me through the darkness…
I did see Caterina, and Giampiero and the guitar guy, but did not talk to any of them. Piero’s father was off to our left in the small area we were in, keeping a close eye on everyone. Also, the Maestro must have been pretty impressed with the Fox Theatre, as I caught him snapping pictures all over the place!!
This was, after all, just a dress rehearsal? I will be ready in Vegas to tell them what I want to tell them, shy or not, because it might be the last time – we never know…so again, my heart is full, but I still have some room left for Vegas! But seriously, I have to ask Ignazio what he said to me in Italian! I may never get another chance! See you all soon!
SOLD OUT…two of the most beautiful words in the English language!! These words make us beam with pride when we see them on a theater marquee along with our other two favorite words: IL VOLO. It warms our hearts to see these words lighted up across our country as the boys make their way from east, a bit north, then south and on west. Reminiscent of “from sea to shining sea,” and we say about them, “Oh beautiful for glorious voices, for glowing faces, for hearts overflowing with love for the fans that greet them with cheers and standing ovations whenever they appear on stage.”
SOLD OUT: It says it all about how these young men have captured us with the charm and talent that has caused us to flock to their concerts by the pure force of it without any help from publicity or hype. One look and listen and we were theirs. When the guys see the SOLD OUT signs as they approach new venues, we hope that seeing them conveys how much we love and appreciate them, and how joyful we are to have our adopted sons back with us in our homeland.
~Mary
Come in and share the love of life, friends and Il Volo!
