GLEANINGS by Daniela

We titled this post “Gleanings” because it covers various news and videos that have occurred since mid-July and that I haven’t reported.
On July 16th, Il Volo was invited to cover an event organized by the San Donato Group (the group operates in the healthcare sector and is the largest private hospital group in Italy), titled SUMMER NIGHT 2025.
Here is an excerpt from the article published in “Fortune Health Italia,” a healthcare publication.
“A special evening to recognize ‘bridge builders’ working across the Mediterranean. Last night, at Villa Miani in Rome, the 2025 Summer Dinner, promoted annually by Gruppo San Donato, GKSD, and Ecam Council, returned. This event highlighted the international commitment of one of the historic ‘seven sisters’ of healthcare, but also presented a series of awards to individuals committed to fostering growth and spreading health and well-being across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The musical group ‘Il Volo’ was greeted with great enthusiasm, donating their entire fee to the non-profit foundation of the San Donato Group, GSD Foundation ETS, and to the Ale & Franz and Friends Onlus Association.”
Guys, we never had any doubts about your generosity, but once again our hearts are filled with pride.
After this event, our guys returned to their families for a short vacation and delighted us with some of their photos:

PIERO:

GIANLUCA:

IGNAZIO:

And then August arrived, bringing us the beautiful Evento of the Youth Jubilee, of which I attach just a few photos.
I’d like to introduce you to the Popes Il Volo knew:

Pope Francis

Pope Leone XIV

With the Youth Jubilee now over, we all thought Ignazio Piero and Gianluca were enjoying a well-deserved break.
It’s August, the height of the holiday season in Italy, but Il Volo still has time to attend one more event.
Issa Resort inauguration on August 6th in Romania. Here are some short videos and photos from the evening.

And then there’s two pieces of news: the first is that the video of the concert at the Valley of the Temples will be released on August 29st, so it’s already available to order.

On September 30th, the Verona Arena will host a commemoration of Luciano Pavarotti, who would have turned 90.
Il Volo will also be participating in the event!!
And finally, a well-deserved August break. It’s been a very hot August here, and I hope Piero, Gianluca, and Ignazio also enjoy a wonderful holiday, even though for Ignazio and Michelle it will all be preparations for Gabriele’s imminent arrival.
Have a great summer everyone!!!

RADIO INTERVIEWS by Daniela

On December 13, just returned from the U.S., Il Volo was a guest in Milan on Radio 102.5, this radio also broadcasts on a television channel and therefore there is the video of the interview.
Before starting the translation, I propose the arrival of the boys at Radio 102.5, as you can see, Ignazio arrives with Michelle 😍 and Piero with Torpedine.
The show is called THE FLIGHT (not on purpose 😁) and the two presenters are La Zac (woman) and Matteo Campese (man).
The part dedicated to Il Volo lasted an hour but was interrupted by various songs from Il Volo.
M.CAMPESE= Not only on the wave, they have arrived in the studio: Il Volo ladies and gentlemen.
IGNAZIO= Hello, hello everyone.
GIANLUCA= Hello everyone.
PIERO= Hi, explain to me why you who work on radio all have a voice like that (you mean deep, persuasive).
GIANLUCA= It’s a setting that works.
LA ZAC= But it’s not true, it used to be like that, Piero.
M.CAMPESE= But you actually say that you’re a singer.
PIERO= It’s like….vroom…
M.CAMPESE= Yes, because once upon a time we wanted to be pilots and we have wheel friction!
GIANLUCA= Hi everyone, it’s nice to be back, we’re really happy, after a long time, to return to: The Flight.
LA ZAC= We were talking before, we were imagining your passports, how many times did you have to renew them, because there were no more pages to put the stamps on?
IGNAZIO= If I’m not mistaken, I’m on my fourth, fourth passport.
M.CAMPESE= Do you keep them? No, you can’t?
IGNAZIO= Yes, you can, just cancel them.
GIANLUCA= We’ll play cards then, it’s a new game.
LA ZAC= What country are you missing, so to speak.
GIANLUCA= I would like to go to India, or Iceland, or Alaska, they are places we have never been.
PIERO= I would like to go to Sardinia.
M.CAMPESE= Easy!
GIANLUCA= You don’t need a passport there.
IGNAZIO= By the way, you gave me some news the other day, without your knowledge.
M.CAMPESE= Tell me.
IGNAZIO= Your Instagram published a video of a restaurant in Bologna.
LA ZAC= Yes.
IGNAZIO= That’s the restaurant where I went.
M.CAMPESE= That is, when you had a quarter of an hour free you rushed over there?
IGNAZIO= It’s near my house.
M.CAMPESE= Ok.
IGNAZIO= And so every now and then I had sushi there, those quick things….you published that video…
LA ZAC= That of fish made outdoors?
IGNAZIO= My stomach was bad for half a day! (laughter)
LA ZAC= Anyway, let me introduce you to Ignazio, the married man.
IGNAZIO= Hi, what do you mean….
LA ZAC= Okay come on, that’s an achievement, we’ve literally seen you grow, professionally but also humanly and see someone getting married…….
GIANLUCA= Sleep the signs of time passing for everyone!
LA ZAC= That’s right.
GIANLUCA= When you reach that age where you get married and you are no longer a fifteen year old, a twenty year old.
M.CAMPESE= Who sang at your wedding?
IGNAZIO= Me.
GIANLUCA= To our ??? Of the three of us? When we get married we get married alone, not as a threesome.
IGNAZIO= I sang at my wedding.
In truth it wasn’t one of those weddings where you feel obligated to sing.
PIERO= No, you just set up a stage that looked like the one at the super bowl.
IGNAZIO= There was the band, but really, whoever wanted went on stage and did what they wanted. Think my sister sang too. We had fun.
LA ZAC= Well, Il Volo is with us today, send your messages. Soon we will give you a series of dates and information, we’ll talk about it shortly, but in the meantime FRAMMENTI DI UNIVERSO, Il Volo!

LA ZAC= The voices of Il Volo that magically intersect (Ignazio screams saying ABRACADABRA and everyone laughs) I knew it, I try to make a good presentation and Ignazio as usual….
M.CAMPESE= But why ABRACADABRA?
IGNAZIO= Because she said magic voices. (laughter)
LA ZAC= Then in your concerts there is always this atmosphere that lends itself to this type of presentation, but that’s enough, I won’t say anything more! You continue.
IGNAZIO= We are very happy with this album, because it is an album for everyone, it is Il Volo as perhaps you don’t expect it or as you expect it.
I personally am really happy because it’s that side that I liked people to be able to notice and see.
LA ZAC= Piero is showing your side.
IGNAZIO= Ah, ok, the side. I’m also very happy especially with TRA LE ONDE, which we left there, and so I suffered a bit, waiting for the right moment to arrive…
GIANLUCA= TRA LE ONDE is the new single you listened to a little while ago.
LA ZAC= Yes.
M.CAMPESE= The whole journey actually started from Sanremo for this latest album.
PIERO= We returned to Sanremo after 5 years, from 2019, we decided to participate in the festival by highlighting humility and modesty and we titled the song CAPOLAVORO (MASTERPIECE, he jokes)
M.CAMPESE= Rightly so.
IGNAZIO= Obviously inspired by our colleague and friend Gianluca Ginoble!
PIERO= The song was dedicated to him (Ignazio and Piero are joking, meaning that Gianluca is a masterpiece).
Jokes aside, it all started from Sanremo, then after Sanremo the world tour began from Nagoya in Japan, it was April 25th, and on April 25th 2009 we sang together for the first time, in the program where we met.
M.CAMPESE= Was it 2009? So 15 years this year of an honored career!
PIERO= Yes, almost 16 years, we are celebrating this milestone with a demanding tour, 150 dates in a year and a half, so we are really happy.
M.CAMPESE= How old were you in 2009?
IGNAZIO= We were 15 years younger. (laughter)
PIERO= 14 (Gianluca) 15 (Ignazio) 16 (Piero)
M.CAMPESE= Did you recognize the narrative of a slightly sacrificed childhood or not?
IGNAZIO= But, sacrificed……it depends on your point of view…
M.CAMPESE= Let’s skip beyond the pleasantries…
PIERO= Do you mean if we missed some stages?
M.CAMPESE= Yes, that.
IGNAZIO= Exactly, it’s exactly that because maybe you missed the whole phase where you say…can you say bad words??
M.CAMPESE= Yes, you must.
IGNAZIO= Where you do shit with friends…
LA ZAC= Piero turned off his microphone!!
IGNAZIO= …..but we got to know the world….
PIERO= You met me!
IGNAZIO= Yes, what an ass! (laughter)
LA ZAC= You got it, it’s going to be such a fun hour.
IGNAZIO= We have learned many things about the world that perhaps we would not have known.
PIERO= He’s the one speaking, you must know that he doesn’t know anything in the world, ……
IGNAZIO= I met the hotels.
PIERO=….because he travels… and always stays in the hotel, while Gianluca and I go around, see monuments, various things, he always stays in the room.
IGNAZIO= You have 10 more seconds to denigrate me, go! (laughter) Go.
LA ZAC= Well friends, stay with us, more incredible surprises with Il Volo in The Flight.

LA ZAC= Until the end, rightly so, MASTERPIECE, Il Volo on RTL 102.5.
IGNAZIO= You should have said “CAPOLAVOLO”
LA ZAC= Gianluca you have something.
GIANLUCA= I want to say that this song was an important step in our career, especially in Italy, but also around the world it was much appreciated and getting back into the game after 5 years and proposing a project of unreleased songs, the first album of unreleased songs after 15 years of career, in short our fans, like everyone else, know that we have based our career for 80% on a repertoire of “covers” (already known songs) taking inspiration from the great songs of the past and re-proposing them, certainly for those who already have them knew, but also for the younger ones that we had never heard some songs from the past.
So from GRANDE AMORE our construction of unreleased songs began, and then finally, after this project, we can say that we are really satisfied with this new adventure, with CAPOLAVORO, with this album, with the new single TRA LE ONDE, because we are expressing a part of us that perhaps most people didn’t know, so we are satisfied.
LA ZAC= Well your career is made up of many pieces, you have truly conquered every corner of the globe and you have added different things each time. There’s also an appointment with Christmas, we’re there now, right?
PIERO= Now on December 24th, Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve, you will see this concert that we created at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. In 2025 Agrigento will be the Italian capital of culture and we created this concert. I must say that we are satisfied because it was really complex to hold the event there, but now we have had the opportunity to see the initial images of the concert and it is impressive to see the Valley of the Temples in that way.
M.CAMPESE= With your repertoire it is a little easier to access those places that are the right setting.
IGNAZIO= Yes absolutely.
PIERO= It’s also the reason why we had the opportunity to sing in more exclusive places, like perhaps the Kiyomizu Dera Temple in Kyoto or inside the Tower of David in Jerusalem two years ago for the Christmas concert.
IGNAZIO= But also singing for the Pope, as much as I adore Vasco Rossi (Italian rock songs) I listen to him every day, but I don’t see him singing in front of the Pope.
M.CAMPESE= I couldn’t wait. (he says this meaning that it would be a really strange thing – laughter)

GIANLUCA= Actually recently Blanco (Italian Hip-hop/rap singer) sang… (in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican), so it is not only linked to our musical genre. Surely what we want to convey is that it is an experience to live, for example the Nessun Dorma, even if you don’t listen to classical music, it is an experience, something that must excite you, because it is not earthly as a melody, it is almost linked to an energy, I don’t know, universal! Do you understand that there are types of music and writing that truly embrace all ages, it’s almost not tied to a genre, it’s an experience like walking through the streets of Rome or Tuscany, you understand? It’s linked to that sensation there, to that emotion!
M.CAMPESE= True, but is there an absurd location that they proposed to you, like the first concert in space in history?
PIERO= The Kiyomizu Dera Temple. You must know that it is the oldest temple in the city of Kyoto and no one has ever held a concert there, because it is a temple overlooking a forest, so there is no audience there, and because they had to make a special to then broadcast in cinemas in Japan and therefore we recorded this concert without the audience, so it was the conductor or the orchestra who applauded. It was special and I also remember the heat and humidity of that evening, but it’s beautiful!
M.CAMPESE= ….and you can’t forget the overhang either…
PIERO= But it was dark, so you didn’t notice.
LA ZAC= While waiting for this festive event in Agrigento, I would say to get into the mood with the song Happy Christmas War is Over.

LA ZAC= This is the international version (they laugh because at the end of the song Ignazio was humming the song)

M.CAMPESE= Sorry but abroad, what is the Italian song that they ask you to sing the most?
PIERO= The one he was singing (Ignazio)
IGNAZIO= GELATO AL CIOCCOLATO (it is the title of a much sung Italian song).
No, no, you know one of the most coveted is always IL MONDO, it’s one of those songs that….
M.CAMPESE= Where you go, they ask you.
IGNAZIO= …..everyone sings it, our audience, wherever we are, always sing it. Like now we’ve finished the tour in Europe and IL MONDO was one of the last songs on the set list and everyone was singing it.
GIANLUCA= And most don’t speak Italian, so they know the text by heart.
PIERO= Actually, I agree with what Ignazio said, on the European tour IL MONDO was the third to last, then after two or three dates we realized that it was the most awaited and therefore we decided to end the concert with IL MONDO .
IGNAZIO= But then the nice thing, there are a lot of people who meet us and tell us:
“You know we started studying Italian for you. I speak a little Italian because I wanted to understand your songs, because I always listen to you and I want to learn Italian.”
That’s also one of the goals we’ve always had, to be an example, to encourage people to do something good with our songs, whether it’s listening to them, or singing them and learning Italian.
PIERO= The best thing we heard, we were in the U.S. last week…..
IGNAZIO= But did you put THE FLIGHT on because we are guests or is it the title of the program???
LA ZAC= Both!!
PIERO=…… we were in the U.S. in Chicago, a lady comes to us and asks us: “But do you sing PAVAROTTI in your concerts?”
Do you know what that lady meant? NESSUN DORMA was titled PAVAROTTI for her.
LA ZAC= How would the NESSUN DORMA Pavarotti version do?
IGNAZIO= Okay, MUSICA CHE RESTA!

LA ZAC = Now begins a tour called ALL FOR ONE AD ASTRA LIVE in the Palasport, from January 10th in Iesolo, then followed by Milan, Treviso, Florence, Bologna, Turin, Rome, Eboli, Bari and Messina, and then there is it’s the whole European session in autumn 2025, so, in short, the guys are always around.
M.CAMPESE= When they come back through Italy they withdraw 200, like in Monopoly and then they go.
Stay with us if you have any questions, see you soon with Il Volo in the studio at RTL 102.5.
In THE FLIGHT it is 3:48pm.
I imagine people stopping you on the street and out of nowhere asking you: “Excuse me, are you giving me a sharp note?”, coldly, like that!
IGNAZIO = On the fly (immediately)
PIERO= (turning to La Zac) Do you remember I told you about the airport?
LA ZAC= Ah it’s true: “Take a flight to Il Volo” (in Italian THE FLIGHT is IL VOLO – laughter)
IGNAZIO= No, come on, guys, please!!
M.CAMPESE= But it doesn’t happen that many times.
IGNAZIO= Always.
M.CAMPESE= Come on!
IGNAZIO= I swear, always!
M.CAMPESE= But isn’t it true, come on, in Italy?
IGNAZIO= Always, the best thing is that whoever says it also feels cool.  “On the fly with Il Volo ah ah ah”
PIERO= Matteo (Campese) always does this.
M.CAMPESE= Of course, I always do this.
IGNAZIO= Ok, and now what are we talking about?
LA ZAC= There are many things to say, and precisely because there are many we try to skim and say the most immediately important things.
PIERO= A little while ago you spoke about the Palasport. Will you come to Milan?
LA ZAC= Yes, I really think so.
GIANLUCA= Yes, Zac, also because we are returning to the Palasport where we will always play the important songs of these 15 years, but we will also play all the new songs from the new album AD ASTRA and then we are building things for the first time, also in the musical part different ones we’ve never done. So in the musical part there will be some interludes…..
PIERO= Don’t spoil anything….
GIANLUCA= Let’s not spoil but also the beginning, it will be a very exciting beginning, so it will be a show for everyone, not just for lovers of this musical genre.
IGNAZIO= Let’s say that the tour in the arenas will be more of a show in all respects, rather than a television concert.
GIANLUCA= And I would like to say that this summer we were on tour, but now we are going to propose a totally different type of show compared to what they saw this summer, furthermore in Palasport a different concept of tour is usually proposed compared to theaters or to summer outdoor seats. So we are very happy to be able to return to the Palasport.
LA ZAC= We remember: 10 January IESOLO, then Milan, Treviso, Florence, Bologna, Turin, Rome, Eboli, Bari and Messina, then maybe we will also give you the European dates, but then we said that there is also the appointment with this great concert from Agrigento for the holidays, so in short, we will have Il Volo available.
GIANLUCA= Yes, we’ll join you for dinner on the 24th.
PIERO= Christmas Eve.
LA ZAC= Good, good. And now SATURNO E VENERE.

M.CAMPESE= RTL 102.5 at 3:53pm, a lot of messages have arrived in the meantime at this time here, there is one asking if you are planning the release of a new book.
GIANLUCA= No.
PIERO= We are not Fabio Volo (writer)
GIANLUCA= I also wanted to say hello to IRAMA, Filippo (real name of Irama who sang Saturno e Venere with Il Volo), apart from the fact that he is a friend, and we are very happy to have made this contrast of musical genre, which then we are the first to have done it, it all started with MISERERE with Zucchero and Bocelli and then with Pavarotti and Friends which brought this series of vocal collaborations. And then it’s nice to be able to follow in the footsteps of our idols again and with Irama we are happy to have brought lyrical pop to everyone again after so many years, even with Irama it was a beautiful collaboration.
M.CAMPESE= (in the meantime Piero and Ignazio and La Zac were laughing and then Matteo asks why) What happened?
IGNAZIO= Nothing, you’re a curious guy.
He’s right (Gianluca), the beautiful thing is not to put barriers to music, it’s one of the most important things, not many people understand it and so we are happy that Filippo, Irama, has agreed to do a duet with us, especially here in Italy where perhaps our gender is always seen as something unusual for three thirty year old boys and we tend to avoid it, it was like this until we won Sanremo and we are following the path we are following, it is useless to deny the evidence, therefore for we are very grateful to Irama for this.
LA ZAC= Incidentally, just yesterday Matteo and I were remembering the time Barbra Streisand called you on stage: “Ignazio, Gianluca, Piero, Il Volo.”
PIERO= That was one of the best collaborations because in the end we were busy for 12 dates, about two months in the U.S. with her, we weren’t the opening act, we were an integral part of the show and we entered with the background of this song (he hums the tune), a very nice thing, and then the situation changed because we sang SMILE by Charlie Chaplin and when she entered , I remember it was 10 years ago now, she came in with this voice, I can’t describe that voice…
IGNAZIO= Magical!
PIERO= Magical! Ignazio found it and so I have to say that the tour with Barbra was a great school.
LA ZAC= It was also one of the first great goals of your career.
IGNAZIO= We leave you in AMONG THE WAVES.

LA ZAC= Il Volo on RTL 102.5.
GIANLUCA= I want to take a few seconds to thank all the authors, the producers who are truly the best in Italy at the moment, who we have relied on in this year and a half to be able to pull together and write this album, so I don’t all the names otherwise I’ll forget some but thank you so much for your support and for helping us express ourselves musically like we’ve never done.
M.CAMPESE= Thanks to you guys for this magical hour, it must be said!
IGNATIO= Abracadabra!!! (laughter)

LA ZAC= Thanks to Il Volo!! In January in Palasport.
PIERO= Happy holidays!
IGNAZIO= See you in the Palasport.
GIANLUCA= Bye everyone!
Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca have participated in several radio interviews in recent days, I won’t give you any other full translations, also because the questions are repeated, there aren’t even full videos, and therefore I will translate the best things for you, except for one of them, the interview with RAI RADIO 2 which is really very beautiful. Later, perhaps after the Christmas holidays, I will send you the entire translated interview because the questions and answers really deserve to be read!
The short video I propose below is part of the ISORADIO interview. Turn on subtitles!!
The next video is part of the RADIO NORBA interview.
In the short telephone interview they talk about the new tour, the new projects for the new single and the meaning of the lyrics of the new album. Then they talk about the Christmas concert, then remember the dates of the Palasport and wish them Christmas wishes!!
While I’m writing to you, I’m listening to the interview live on RAI RADIO 1, so I can’t keep up with these three who NEVER stop!!
Furthermore, just today on the weekly TV SORRISI E CANZONI TV there is a nice interview with Il Volo.
It will be a magical eve, the evening of December 24th on Canale 5. With the special Christmas Concert from the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.

SO THE HOLIDAYS TAKE IL VOLO

Guys, the time difference is bothering you!
IGNAZIO= The Melt stops being melted and we become melted….
PIERO= We sleep on the plane and don’t feel tired.
GIANLUCA= We’ve already done 45 minutes of running.
When we reach them on a video call, in Italy it is 7pm and at their place it is 10am. The artists of the Il Volo trio, connected from the U.S., appear relaxed and relaxed. Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble are in America because they participated as super guests in a special Andrea Bocelli event in California.

On the stage of the Kia Forum in Inglewood (Los Angeles) you sang IL GLADIATORE and O SOLE MIO in duet with Bocelli, with the audience in a frenzy.
GIANLUCA= When Andrea, who was next to Zucchero, announced our entrance on stage by saying “Make way for the young people” a roar could be heard.
IGNAZIO= Enormous affection.
PIERO= It means that, even if we are still guys, in 15 years of our career we have sown. But you never get used to certain emotions.
Now another magical night awaits you: on December 24th you will be the protagonists of the Canale 5 concert, Il Volo – Natale ag Agrigento.
PIERO= The opportunity to admire the Valley of the Temples as you have never seen it. It is a special moment: Agrigento will be the Italian Capital of Culture in 2025.
Will you perform with the orchestra and choirs?
GIANLUCA= Complete package: there will be 120 of us on stage.

Lineup of the evening?
IGNAZIO= If I’m not mistaken there will be 28 steps 😁
PIERO= Ignazio loves to joke, but in reality, as in any self-respecting concert of ours, there will be our successes, unreleased ones, hits like Capolavoro, but also all the great Christmas classics.
What is your favorite Christmas song?
GIANLUCA= White Christmas, in the 40s version of Bing Crosby, because it started Christmas songs as we understand them today.
PIERO= For me Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano
IGNAZIO= I say “Astro del ciel” , because I sang it as a child in school plays. What a beautiful Christmas atmosphere, with family lunches and all the gifts.
Do you three exchange Christmas presents every year?
PIERO= It’s not obligatory, because we think about it when it happens, without waiting for anniversaries.
GIANLUCA= Promise, we’ll make it this year.
IGNAZIO= Just don’t give me books that only you like and that I will never read.
PIERO= Ignazio, don’t do that, come on. This year is his first Christmas as a husband, you have to understand that.
Ignazio, tell me: how did you get on with the decorations? Have you delegated everything to your wife Michelle?
IGNAZIO= No, we made the tree together. In mid-November it was already decorated, because my wife is Venezuelan and the Christmas atmosphere starts earlier, on October 31st.
An essential Christmas Eve ritual?
PIERO= Dinner with relatives.
GIANLUCA= With bingo, cards, but not only: I like many unconventional board games.
IGNAZIO= Panettone with raisins and almonds.
If each of you were a character from the nativity scene, who would it be?
IGNAZIO= Right now the ox, maybe I should go on a diet a bit.
GIANLUCA= The little child who brings light to the other two.
PIERO= Then I am Saint Joseph who will give you a stick on your head. 😁
In the Canale 5 schedule, however, you are like the Three Wise Men. You have just hit the Auditel, even in reruns, with the TUTTI PER UNO concerts, three evenings at the Verona Arena. Does Mediaset already pamper you for other events?
IGNAZIO= With Pier Silvio Berlusconi (CEO of Mediaset) we have established an excellent relationship of trust and mutual respect.
PIERO= The conditions are there.
GIANLUCA= We have many ideas that we would like to realize.

Meanwhile, the 2025 agenda is filling up with commitments….
IGNAZIO= In January we return to Italy in the indoor stadiums, in March we then fly to America for the World Tour.
GIANLUCA= And in autumn we have added new dates in Europe and others will arrive soon.
Good resolutions for the new year?
PIERO= I would quote maestro Franco Battiato (Italian composer and singer) “Being the best version of us.”
What do you wish the readers of Sorrisi?
IGNAZIO= To spend the holidays in harmony with the family, not only at Christmas but every day of the year: this is the most important thing.
GIANLUCA= To put aside grudges, forgetting problems.
PIERO= To watch the concert on Canale 5 and sing with us!
And these two short videos have just been published, they concern the wishes sent by Il Volo during the presentation of the Mediaset schedules!

And with this for the moment we want to close by sending everyone our warmest wishes, from all the Flight Crew staff: 🎄

O HOLY NIGHT

May the weapons fall silent and peace triumph everywhere. ❤️❤️🙏❤️❤️✨

IL VOLO AT THE G7 ON TOURISM and PBS Special by Daniela

The G7 on Tourism was held in Florence on 13 and 15 November.
Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè chaired the work sessions, which saw the participation of ministers and heads of delegation from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the European Union and some nations and outreach organizations – Saudi Arabi , Brazil, India, Egypt, OECD and UN Tourism.
After the introductory event, the two days of work began at 8:30 am on Thursday 14th, with the ceremony in which Minister Santanchè welcomes the ministers of the G7 and the outreach countries. The work sessions covered: tourism and socio-economic development opportunities; human capital – work, inclusion and skills; digitalization and artificial intelligence.

Palazzo Gondi

At the end of the first day of work, a visit to the village of Monteriggioni and Abbadia Isola was planned, where the ministers arrived on board a historic train. The day ended with a performance by Il Volo at Palazzo Gondi. The G7 ended on Friday morning, with the closing press conference of Minister Santanchè in the Sala delle Reali Poste of the Uffizi Gallery.
Il Volo with Eugenio Giani president of the Tuscany region.
And here is the moment in which the Minister of Tourism Daniela Santalchè presents IL Volo:
“They are an Italian excellence. I have to thank them because they are ambassadors of Italy to the world.
Here they are, (applause) I was simply saying that you are an Italian pride….”
Very few videos of the event that concern the performance of Il Volo, only a few fragments that I propose to you.
It wasn’t a real concert but a final performance at the end of dinner, it seems that Il Volo sang three songs:

NELLE TUE MANI

NESSUN DORMA

Unfortunately this is all I can offer you for the presence of Il Volo at the G7 TURISMO, but in any case I would say that as always Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca made the Italian name shine on an important occasion.
But now we come to the important news that was published by PBS in recent days.
CLICK HERE to view the PBS video
How wonderful, PBS is sponsoring the event, I’m happy for you that you will be able to see that concert soon!!

Please check your local listings for the airing dates in your area.

We in Italy, I don’t think we will have access to view it, so I await your comments!!!
And finally, there is a moment of rest for our young men who have had an endless series of commitments.
Through the photos published, they are telling us that they are well and that they are in a period of relaxation.
The photos of Piero comes from Turin, where together with his brother Francesco, he is attending the ATP Tennis finals and will certainly support Sinner!!
Gianluca publishes a beautiful photo of a truly relaxing place in the mountains, perhaps Abruzzo? Will he be alone or in good company? If he wants, he will let us know!!
Our Ignazio is certainly in sweet company with his beautiful wife Michelle and in the company of Arturo, everything expresses sweetness!!
That’s all for now.
I’m really happy that soon you will be able to see the PBS concert in the Valley of the Temples, surely the concert dates will be published afterwards!
And I’m even happier to see our young men relaxing and taking time for themselves.
Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio, enjoy your time, because there will be many future commitments and we are waiting for you with open arms!!

Becoming a Family by Susan De Bartoli

It seems Christmas came early this year. I really wanted to attend the concert at the Valley of the Temples, but I have to be in Italy on September 16th, and I just couldn’t justify going to Italy so early.

I’m told the concert was spectacular. Could it be anything less? Afterall, it is an Il Volo Concert. I can’t wait to see the Special on December 24th on Rai and the PBS Special.

As you know I write a Christmas story every year and this year will be no exception. I always write about the family because this is the one time of the year that the guys put aside for their family.
For the guy’s family is family. And not just blood.   When they first started out, they traveled with one of their parents. Sometimes a father and sometimes a mother. And so it was that the mother of one became the mother of three and so it was also with the fathers. Three families joined as one. But eventually the parents stayed home, and one person took over for all six parents ~ Barbara Vitali.

But now I’m getting ahead of the story….

As we all know, after the guys won Ti Lascio una Canzone, they embarked on the tour of a lifetime. Why do I say a lifetime? Because since the first time they came to America they have continued to come back year after year and each time they are as welcome as they were the first time.

Part of that first journey brought the guys to Los Angeles where, at the invitation of Quincy Jones’, they joined “We are The World for Haiti” a charity event. They performed alongside 80 other international artists including Celine Dion, Bono, Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand, Usher, Natalie Cole, and more.
Il Volo were the only Italian artists to be invited.

The three voices from the background caused such a sensation that everyone was asking, “Who was that?” They couldn’t believe what they were hearing but, “Who were they?” Soon they would find out!

Barbara Streisand took notice of them and in 2012, she invited the guys to join her on her “Back to Brooklyn Tour,” which included twelve performances in the United States and Canada. They were not an opening act, no, they shared the stage with Barbara. To the guys this was a dream come true!

By 2012, only three years after they were joined together, they had become quite an item.

The guys were riding high, and they were preparing to record “We Are Love” at the beginning of 2013 but suddenly things changed.  Not only their lives, but their whole relationship. Their lives took on a whole new meaning….

One night in autumn in Miami everything changed, and the guys would become brothers and Barbara Vitali would become a mother who they dearly needed and loved. Her actions along with those of Piero and Gianluca made them a family that night.
This is one of those sad stories, but it is a story that turned out well.
I’ll let the guys tell you about that night.

Let’s begin with Ignazio since it is his story….
After the tour we started thinking about the second album and if I remember correctly, in April the album was released and in August the new tour began, from Vancouver, Canada. We will never forget that tour.
In September there was an episode that marked the relationship between us guys. It united us even more and made us understand that we three are the strength!
Miami, September 24th, was an evening like many others. We decided to go out with a group of friends to one of the most “in” Italian restaurants in South Beach.
The evening started well. We were having a lot of fun. The owner knew us well. He had us sit in the club that was on the top floor of the building where only members went. There were about fifty people there. We had dinner and from that point I remember only when I got on the sofa and when I woke up.

Piero continues….
Each of us lives bad, unhappy moments, sad moments, but I think that day, that night in Miami was the worst of my life. I remember every little detail and in a hundred years I will still remember it.  We were in a famous restaurant in Miami, which was a restaurant and a disco, and at some point, after dancing a bit, we went out to move to another nightclub with some friends. I got in a taxi with one of them. Ignazio got into a car with someone else who had a two-seater car. We made our way in the taxi to the disco, which was very close to the restaurant.
So, we arrive in front of the room and I state that we do not drink. A glass of wine at the table, yes, but always in moderation. Sometimes we like to joke and pretend to be drunk. That night Ignazio was doing it with me, like talking on the phone with his wallet.
I know him very well, but for a moment I thought he was really drunk, but the bad thing was that he was not at all, and we only found out much later.
So, the taxi leaves me in front of the disco. Ignazio and his friend drive around the block to find parking. I wait in front of the door to see them turn the corner and then come together.
At a certain point, I saw our friend coming, but I no longer saw Ignazio.
I say: Excuse me, but where is Ignazio?
The Friend: He took a taxi and went to the hotel.
Ah okay. But then I had a doubt! It came to me that flash of Ignazio pretending to talk on the phone with his wallet.
Excuse me: I’m going back to the subject, but did you really see him get in the cab and say the address.
The Friend: No, I left him in front of my car.
The nightmare started then. Do you know what nightmare means?
I pick up the phone, wait for three minutes – the hotel is close to me – I call the reception.
I say: Excuse me, have you seen the guy from 320 come back?
Reception: No, I do not know.
I call our friend, who had entered the disco, and I say to him: Take me straight to the hotel.
I got in the car, and I thought I would immediately notify Gianluca, who was still at the restaurant and was to join us at the disco. I almost called him, but then I thought: What if Ignazio is in the hotel? Better to wait to sound the alarm.
I arrive at the hotel and ask again: Did you see the guy from 320 enter?
Reception: No, I do not think so, we have not seen anyone here.
At three-fifteen in the morning not many people pass by the entrance of a hotel, among those few people if Ignazio enters, you notice him, he is not one that goes unnoticed.
I say: Excuse me, could you give me the key to the room and let me in? At least I can see if he is asleep.
Reception: No, we cannot give it to you.
We are in the same group. You know very well he is my colleague.
Reception: No, unfortunately for privacy we cannot.
I begged the gentleman, I begged him, but he did not give me the key.
I go up, I go to Ignazio’s door with our friend, and we knock.
Igna’! Igna’! We shouted, beat and shouted, but no one answered.
In that chaos, however, from under the door we saw that the light was on. Ignazio is in the room!
I seemed to see him sleeping on the bed, or at least I hoped it, I hoped so much.
At that point, the doubt came to me, What if the room is really empty and he’s in some corner of Miami that felt bad? So, I took my friend and told him: Let’s go back to the disco street and check around it. But it’s not that we only made the disco area, no, we made almost all of Miami up and down to find Ignazio. But nothing! Three hours and no results. I had anguish that took my breath away.
At that point I had to warn the others, and I started with Gianluca.
Gianluca….
It was not until six o’clock. My heart stopped.
I suspected something had happened because I had waited for Ignazio and Piero at the disco, but they never arrived. I thought they changed their mind, perhaps they were tired or something. Never, however, to think that it was such a serious thing.
At that time, when Piero called me, I was in bed, recently, but was in bed.
I did not even think for a moment that Piero was joking. It was too serious, and Piero is not the kind to joke about such things.
I said only: I wait you below, I dressed and went down to the hotel lobby.
You cannot imagine what I thought in just a few minutes when I waited for him.
It was the first time in four years that we did not know where one of us was.
It was a, very, bad feeling!
Piero continues the story….
It was at that point that, together with Gianluca, we decided to wake Barbara.
Barbara, we cannot find Ignazio. I told her.
It was half past six in the morning. We had not heard from him for more than three hours.
Barbara says: A joke?
No, we cannot find him.
We only worried about Ignazio, but Barbara then had another problem to manage. That morning at 9:50 we had to fly to New York because the next day we had a concert at Radio City Music Hall. And not just any show, sold out, and all our parents were going to New York and to Washington, our lawyers had arrived, and all those who work with us. And Michele, of course, because this was the most important concert of the whole tour.
Piero tells Barbara: However, I tell her, from under the door you can see the light, maybe he’s asleep on the bed, only they won’t give us the key to the room.
First thing, Barbara gets up, gets dressed, and runs to open Ignazio’s door.
She basically threatens the one at the front desk, so she goes to room 320 with a bodyguard from the hotel and they open the room.
Ignazio was not there: my world collapsed there. My blood is frozen.
At that point Barbara calls Michele in New York. Michele, there’s a problem Ignazio cannot be found.
Michele: It’s a joke.
From there Michele mobilizes everyone. He calls all his friends in Miami, everyone. Meanwhile, Michele also had to understand whether or not to cancel the concert and how to cancel it. I could not put my head around it, my only fear, and my biggest nightmare was the fact that Ignazio was not there.
Barbara, in the meantime, calls Flavio, another friend of ours in Miami and he arrives with his motorbike. Let it be known that Barbara has a fear of motorcycles, she had never ridden in her life. She got on the motorbike and went to the police station to ask if they had arrested a boy in a green shirt and then she went to all the hospitals to see if some ambulance had brought in a guy with a green shirt.

We turned Miami upside down there.
What was I doing?
Gianluca continues the story….
Piero and I took turns at the hotel, watching all the taxis and we hoped that Ignazio would descend.
Piero interrupts…
Every taxi that arrived, we prayed to heaven and earth.
And where was Ignazio? Time for Ignazio to come back into the story…
The police woke me up the next morning on the lawn of South Beach’s main street, telling me that if I did not get up, they would have to take me to jail. At 9:50 on that September 25th we had a flight to New York and, on the 27th we had the most important concert of the tour at Radio City Music Hall. The concert was sold out for a few weeks. There were six thousand people.
Time to wake up and I realize that everything is gone, my cell phone, wallet, and jacket. They had stolen everything. What do I do? And above all, what time is it? Something told me it was late. So, I start running.
But where are you going? I told myself at a certain point. I stopped to see where I was. I was between the seventh and eighth, quite the opposite of the restaurant and our hotel that was on the nineteenth. I definitely had to hurry up. So, I start running again, but the problem remained to understand what time it was.
I stop and ask a gentleman, who answers me: It’s 9:50, man!
The first thought? The flight! In the sense of the plane … Then I start to run, but this time like a bolt in the Olympics, but I realize that the hotel is too far. A taxi, a taxi was needed.
I glanced down the road and one was passing on the opposite lane. I start running wildly without checking if any cars are coming. Fortunately, there was no one. This street in Miami is always busy but, at that precise moment no one passed. Do we want to call it ass? (Luck)
Anyway, I get the taxi. Driving was an African American woman and I’m asking her to take me to the hotel. In fact, I do not even know how I could remember the name of the hotel.
Piero interrupts….
It was already 9:30, the plane was already gone, and Ignazio was still not found.
I was desperate. I no longer knew who to pray to or what to think. They have kidnapped him, they will have killed him, they will be threatening him.
Barbara arrived back at the hotel from the hospital and the police station without news.
So now I’m going up, riding on the bike with Flavio. What do I do? This time I start going around the alleys of Miami. The nightclub was on the Sixteenth Street. The hotel was on the nineteenth, so three blocks away, it was close. I asked every bum I met: Excuse me, have you seen a boy with a green shirt?
A dollar, I heard a lot of times. And while I was shooting there, Gianluca was waiting in front of the hotel for all the taxis coming hoping to see Ignazio descend, while Barbara had been on the phone for so long that she no longer knew who to call.
Hope was already lost in New York.
Ignazio returns to say….
When I arrived at the hotel, I saw Barbara and Gianluca sitting on a bench as if waiting for someone. Then I got out of the taxi and asked them: Excuse me, do you have any dollars to pay for the taxi? They both looked up together ….
Gianluca interrupts…
… I burst into tears; I started screaming. It was as if they had taken a weight off my shoulders that crushed me to the ground and prevented me from breathing.
Ignazio….
Barbara paid for the taxi and started to call Michele, who I later realized, in the midst of all that concern, also had to find a way to solve the problems that would have caused a possible cancellation of the concert in New York.
My mother, who was already there, had understood everything, because I did not answer the phone and she had news of what happened from Gaetano and Leonora, Piero’s parents and Gianluca’s mother.
Piero….
While I was riding on the Lincoln Road, with Flavio, my phone rings: it was half past ten.
Gianluca shrieked: He has arrived, he has arrived, he is here!
I scream from the bike to vent all the evil I had inside. I cried. Do you know when you run with the bike and you have all the tears? What’s this? And I punched Flavio, I gave punches from happiness.
We arrive at the hotel, and I see Ignazio in front of the reception with that blessed green jersey. He had gone out the night before with a blue jacket and they had stolen it, along with his wallet and cell phone.
What did I do? I called my mom because Ignazio was not well. I understood that they had given him something. My mother tells me to let him drink a lot of water and give him a spoonful of honey. And you see Ignazio lying on the bed and I with the spoon, you know when you give the syrup to your son? With the honey spoon to make him eat everything he could swallow.
Too sad and also hard to tell.
Ignazio….
The boys accompanied me to my room, they helped me take a shower because when I looked in the mirror, I realized that I was full of bruises and scratches on my face and body, some bumps here and there and I was also half lame.
The two of them together with Barbara had gone around Miami all night, from three thirty in the morning to ten, in taxis, motorbikes, between hospitals and various police departments to look for me, while I was sleeping in the fresh air on a green lawn.
That night they beat me with blows. They threw me right and left. But I had not gotten drunk, I had just accepted a drink that had been drugged without my noticing it. Do you know one thing? From that day on, if I go to a pub or a disco, I always ask for closed drinks, I have to open them myself.
My biggest rage of that night is I do not remember anything, as if they had cut the film of a camera roll and had it attached to a later piece. It’s not nice to not be able to remember.
Barbara, in the end, managed to move the flight, we left later and arrived at the hotel. Our parents were waiting outside, with shining eyes and the desire to hug us like never before. Shortly afterwards, my father arrived. He was stuck in London and, poor man, had to travel from London to New York without knowing if they had found me.
In the end it’s the result that matters. I can say that this experience made us grow a lot and made us want more good things for each other.

That concert at Radio City Music Hall was one of the most beautiful concerts we’ve ever done. We sang like never before maybe because we had just found out what it meant to lose everything in a moment.
During that concert Ignazio had a special message for the guys and everyone involved  with Il Volo.

So here we are at the end of the story. The guy’s got through the night because they were a family! Three brothers looking out for one another and a mother who would not give up until she found her missing sheep and returned him to the fold. Becoming a Family wasn’t easy for the guy’s but when they realized their own strength they knew they had come to a new reality in their lives. They knew they could depend on one another, and they had a mother to turn to in difficult moments.

So, I began this story by saying Christmas will be different this year.  Yes, Barbara is gone and the three have lost a mother and it will be very difficult to pass the holidays without her. But they have each other to lean on.

Very soon Ignazio will marry the beautiful Michelle Bertollini, and she will become a part of the Il Volo family and as each guy marries, the family will continue to grow! It’s the wheel of life! One gets off, one gets on and each one is a treasure!
For your listening pleasure the entire September 27, 2013 concert from Radio City Music Hall.

Join me next week as I go back Through the Fields of My Mind and open the door to a new adventure!
What I have written here are excerpts from the book the guys wrote about their lives. “Il Volo, Un’avventura Straordinario, La Nostra Storia.” (An Extraordinary Adventure, Our Story)

Cooking Pasta for Piero by Susan

Alas! Piero doesn’t cook! I think during quarantine he learned how to use the microwave. In an IG conversation with his friend, singer, Anastacia, Piero mentioned that during quarantine, his mother was cooking for him every day. It’s so nice when mom’s your neighbor!
Piero may not cook but being a good Italian, he knows what’s best to eat ~ Pasta!

I’m sure by now you all figured out that Piero loves Pasta. And as part of his regular routine, he eats pasta three hours before a performance. How do we know this? Piero talked about it in “Un’avventura Straordinario, La Nostra Storia.”

As you know when the guys were young, they traveled with one of their parents at all times. In his story, Piero recalled an incident in Cuernavaca, Mexico…..
I remember my father talking to the Mexicans while he cooked me the pasta. Because before singing, three hours before, I always eat a hundred grams (approx. 3 ½ ounces) of tomato and basil spaghetti. I love that moment.
He (Piero’s father) comes in the dressing room, brings me the spaghetti made by him (we bring the packages from home). And that year he started explaining to the Mexicans how spaghetti, tomato and basil were cooked.
So, Gaetano, Piero’s father, introduced the Mexican cooks to spaghetti in tomato and basil sauce.

In Sicily they make a very rich tomato sauce and with this sauce we will be Cooking Pasta for Piero.

But, before I get to the recipe, and another little surprise, let me tell you a little bit about the town Piero lives in.
Naro is a small medieval town in the province of Agrigento, not far from the Valley of the Temples.
The hill town offers stunning views of the surrounding hills, all the way down to the sea.

This monumental city has a very ancient history, dating back to the Sicani, the most ancient inhabitants of the island. According to ancient Greek writers, Sicans, where the original inhabitants of central Sicily. The Greek historian Thucydides believed the Sicani to be Iberians from Spain who were driven out by the invading Siculi into the central parts of the island. (From Sicans and Siculi derives the name Sicily.) They were also invaded by Arabs, Normans and Swabians. We can find remnants of their presence everywhere: from the ancient city gate, the only one left from the seven gates to the mosque which was transformed into a Norman Duomo. There is also an ancient Jewish quarter and the Medieval Chiaramonte Castle which rises high above the city.

The monuments, also, tell us about Naro’s important history. The city received the title Fulgentissima (Splendor) and had a seat in the Sicilian Parliament.
There are many churches, in particular, the Church dedicated to Maria SS Annunziata (Our Lady of the Annunciation). Within the church we find many treasures including the statue of the Madonna of the Chains by Antonello and Giacomo Gagini. This beautiful church also has a medieval baptismal font.
Note: When the Spanish invaded, they brought along empanadas which Piero mentions in his story and calls by its Sicilian name “impanate.” This is how Piero described them, “Impanate are rolls of pizza dough with vegetables inside, a typical dish of my area.”
In Naro, there is an old tradition which says, “The righteous, before going to paradise, take a tour of the island to say farewell to seven ‘special’ places in Sicily: the Castle of Naro, which is windswept day and night; Caltabellotta, coiled up around the rock; Mount Erice, that looks towards Africa; Ustica, a small island in a green colored sea; Stromboli, the volcano that mingles with the waves; Ortigia, the ancient Greek island…” (I count six – I checked and couldn’t find seven). Piero, do you know what the seventh one is???

One of the most important events for the inhabitants of Naro is the Feast of San Calogero. The Patron Saint is celebrated on 18th and 25th of June. In nearby Sciacca you can visit the Sanctuary of San Calogero.

Now before we go to the Tomato Sauce, how about as little inspiration?

I always include this picture because Piero looks like one of my ex-boyfriends in this picture. Whenever I include it and say who he looks like, I get a hundred messages and emails! Let me save you the trouble! The answer is no and none of your business. Kind of the same answer I give you when you ask about the girlfriends of our guys!

Moving on! Concentrate ladies!
A little music to entice you!

I’m going to give you two recipes. One is the actual recipe with whole tomatoes. It’s wonderful if you want to do the work. The other is a simpler version which is very easy to make. The sauces in this region are very rich.

Tomato Sauce from the region of Agrigento
2 1/4 lb. of ripe tomatoes (you can use vine tomatoes or plum tomatoes)
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 onion sliced thin or diced if you prefer
fresh basil leaves
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
salt
pepper
pasta of your choice
Preparation:
Wash and dry the tomatoes, cut them in half and crush them. Put the tomatoes in a saucepan together with garlic, (If you were making this for Piero, you would have to leave out the garlic because he’s allergic to it.), onion and basil. Add a small amount of water. A half cup should do. Cook for about 15 minutes. Remove the tomatoes and puree them. I’m sure you don’t have a mill to puree so, I suggest you take a colander and place it over a saucepan. Add the tomatoes to the colander and crush with your hands. Be careful it’s hot. You could use a spoon to do this.
This will allow the sauce to flow through and what will remain are the skins and seeds. Next, put the tomatoes back in the saucepan, add oil, salt and pepper and heat over a low flame to thicken the sauce. Cook for 30 minutes. While the sauce is cooking, boil the water for pasta. Add salt.
When the water boils, add the pasta. Follow the cooking instructions on the box. Try to have the pasta ready when the sauce is ready.
Before I get to the simple recipe, I want to mention Strattu. Strattu is a Sicilian word for tomato paste. The Sicilians jar their tomatoes in the summer for winter use. While doing this, they take some of the tomatoes and spread them out on a ceramic or wooden tray and leave it out in the sun for two – three days, constantly stirring it, to turn it into tomato paste. It takes about seven pounds of tomatoes to make one jar of strattu!

The first sauce I gave you is the recipe for is a plain sauce that would be used alone or with fish. When making a pork (sausage) sauce or any meat sauce (meat balls) you would add strattu (a couple of tablespoons) to it because pork will thin your sauce and, strattu gives it a thicker consistency.
Strattu is tomato paste. You can buy tomato paste in your local grocery store.

                                                  Their Version

                                                    My Version
Simple Tomato Sauce
In place of ripe tomatoes use one can of plum tomatoes. Crush the tomatoes with your hands. Or crush them with a potato masher but, make sure to poke the whole tomato before crushing it otherwise it will squirt back in your face.
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 onion sliced thin or diced if you prefer
fresh basil leaves
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
Salt
Pepper
pasta of your choice
Preparation:
In a saucepan heat the olive oil, add onions, garlic (remember Piero is allergic to garlic) salt & pepper. Sauté a few minutes and then add tomatoes. Now add the basil. After the sauce bubbles, lower the flame. Let it cook for 30 minutes.
While the sauce is cooking, boil the water for pasta. Add salt. When the water boils, add the pasta. Follow the cooking instructions on the box. Try to have the pasta ready when the sauce is ready. If you want to make a meat sauce add tomato paste (two or three tablespoons) as a substitute for strattu. Serve with red wine. Of course, my choice, is always Montepulcino d’Abruzzi.
Buon appetito!
Dinner Music!

Now for my surprise!
A while back, I learned that Piero likes Pizza Margherita. Sorry, I don’t make pizza. My mother did but it’s not something I picked up from her. So, my advice to those who don’t make pizza, order from your local Pizzeria. They all make Pizza Margherita.
On Friday’s I always order pizza and the kids come over and we have dinner together. During COVID, this was not possible because it would require everyone coming to my house and we would exceed the 10 people limit so, we decided to share our pizza together on SKYPE.
For those of you who are brave, here’s the recipe for Pizza Margherita:
Don’t make the dough, pick it up from your local pizzeria or local bakery. Just ask for pizza dough.
Toppings:
2 Cans of diced tomatoes, drain some of the juice
Fresh basil to taste (for me I can’t get enough of it)
8 Cups of Shredded Mozzarella (you can use skim mozzarella if you like)
½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon salt (go by your taste but don’t get carried away)
1/8 teaspoon pepper (go by your taste but don’t get carried away)
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
Stretch out the dough and spoon the tomatoes on it. Top with Basil, Oregano, Mozzarella Cheese, Pepper Flakes, Salt & Pepper. Drizzle oil on top.
Bake in a 450-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. ~ Does that sound right Ignazio?
So where did the name Pizza Margherita come from? Margherita of Savoy (Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna) was the Queen consort of the Kingdom of Italy by marriage to Umberto I. According to legend, in 1889, the Margherita pizza, whose red tomatoes, green basil, and white cheese represent the Italian flag, was named after her.

After I finished this story my dear friend at Flight Crew, Daniela Perani, sent me a picture of herself standing in front of this portrait of Margherita of Savoy. She was at the museum in Palermo.  She didn’t know I wrote this story. What are the chances?
Enjoy the pizza!

When asked “what is your favorite song from the Morricone album,” Piero answered, “Being from Sicily, I would have to say ‘Se,’ from the movie Cinema Paradiso.”
So, let’s listen to the guys sing this amazing song!

I hope you liked Cooking Pasta for Piero and I hope you try to make Pizza Margherita. As to me, I will leave the pizza making to the expert, Ignazio, as I’m sure Piero does!
