Through The Fields of My Mind….

The Whirlwind!

How do you begin to tell a story, more like a fairy tale, about three teenage boys who conquered the music industry?
They came from Italy from very different regions, very different families, very different backgrounds but, they had one thing in common, the ability to capture audiences with their amazingly, beautiful, voices.
Thinking back over the years, I realize they have put so much energy into such a short period of time. Twelve years of a lifetime but, in reality, they did it in five years! How is it possible that these three men could do, in such a short period of time, what most men cannot do in a lifetime? The secret is in the voices!
Going back to the beginning, I remember what Gianluca said, “I thought there were three hundred thousand boys singing like me, and instead that night I discovered that there are only two: Ignazio and Piero.” Of course, Gianluca was referring to the night they sang together for the first time on Ti Lascio Una Canzone.  So, let’s begin there!
When they came together as contestants on Ti Lasacio una Canzone, they never dreamt that they would walk off the stage as stars! Individually, they sang with some very famous Italian singers, Al Bano, Massimo Ranieri, Fausto Leali, Adamo, Piero Mazzoccheti and, they were singing their songs and these men were in absolute awe of these teenagers.

From the first note that came out of their mouths, everyone recognized how unique their voices were. Roberto Cenci the artistic director and director of Ti Lascio una Canzone recognized the importance of these three voices. He recognized that the voices were different but alike in their uniqueness. Cenci understood if you put the voices together, they will blend beautifully and, they will be very appealing.  How right he was! An experiment that turned into stardom.

Left to right: A young Piero, Ignazio, Gianluca and Michele Torpedine

And how did Michele Torpedine put it? “The three casually put together to sing a song of the program possess an incredible vocality for their age.” Watching them on TV Michele is thinking these guys are good and again repeats it to himself, they’re good! He thinks, “What if I try to put them together seriously?” Michele and everyone else felt they were incredible!
But it needed much more than just a feeling and it went beyond incredible. It needed something to come to life. It needed a new idea. It needed to be different because they were different. So how do you make it different? Bel Canto!
Bel canto is Italian for “beautiful singing.” From the mid-18th century through the early 19th century, Italian opera developed what is now known as a bel canto style. Composers began to write long, sustained vocal lines intended to show off the beauty of the voice.
Well, that works! They certainly have beautiful voices!
If you start with the premise that bel canto can make the difference, then you need to find the best way to present it! First, have them sing all the Italian classics. If you look at the music industry at the time you have to say “it won’t work” but, it did. Why? It worked because their voices were unique, the presenters were teenagers, and the world was waiting for something different. The difference was they needed to go back to what was and present in a different light. A unique  idea. A little risky for sure but, a lot of very talented people in the industry felt it could work. And it did!
Bel canto for sure! But those voices that embody bel canto needed to go beyond and so where do you go? In their concerts they sing beautiful arias because they have beautiful operatic voices but, they will tell you, they do not sing opera. So, they reinvented the idea of opera. Just as bel canto reinvented opera, so did they reinvent it with their Operatic Pop. Always light, free flowing, ethereal!  They took away the rigidness and left the beauty of the words which they present in their special ways with their special voices!
A few days after I finished this article, Michele Torpedine appeared on the Marzia Roncacci show. During the interview Marzia surprised everyone with an appearance by Piero. She asked one very important question, that is the question I just presented. So, I would like you to hear it in Piero’s own words.
Marzia: Listen, Piero, and also Michele, how do you explain this great success of yours, of three young people, because you are now very well established, even abroad, it is not so easy, there are only a few who are known and, they can be counted on your fingertips.
Piero: Our success is the echo! It is the resonance of the music we sing. As Pavarotti did in the past, bel canto is the winning weapon. Bel canto is the most popular Italian music in the world, and it is nice to hear in any theater or arena in the world, even in Japan, when the public hear these melodies, written right here in Italy, they go into ecstasy. Our voices also contribute, it is clear, and to hear young people with these voices …. but it is clear that if we didn’t sing this kind of music, it would be much more difficult.
Piero is very modest! Their voices are very important. They brought bel canto back to life in a unique way! Bravo!
So, let’s move on! Where do you begin?

America!

Left to right: A young Gianluca, Piero and Ignazio singing

Their first stop was Miami. It was like stepping into a dream for them. Everything in America was different from Italy. The streets, the houses, the cars, everything was different. But above all, they really could not comprehend all that was happening to them. After Miami they went to Los Angeles.

Left to right: Ignazio, Gianluca and Piero in front of a We Are The World sign

In Los Angeles, they were invited to participant in the charity event “We Are the World 25 for Haiti”.
They took Los Angeles by storm. This is truly the beginning of IL VOLO!

By now, they were in a whirlwind!

Piero recalls, “We were fifteen and sixteen when we found ourselves in this American dream. We had signed a contract with a record company that includes famous artists like Beyonce and many others. We were invited by the record company to a party. We turned and saw, Quincy Jones; we turn around and we saw Rihanna; we turned and shook hands with Lady Gaga. We talked with them, some singers who were idols for us and for our peers.”
In fact, the guys only began to understand that something was changing when their first record came out. The boys had met all the big names and performed with them in We Are the World, but reality had not yet set in. Let’s hear what Ignazio had to say about this….
“It was already in May 2010 and the Il Volo album was about to come out all over the world. Maybe I was too small and naive, but I did not feel the anxiety of the job like today. The first major television show we appeared in, in America, was American Idol, the world’s most famous music talent show.”

And what a performance that was. They sang “ ‘O Sole Mio” and in that moment, they captured the hearts of thirty million people. Not to mention Ignazio giving five to Steven Tyler. But that’s another story!
During the last three episodes of American Idol’s tenth season, they performed and promoted their first album, Il Volo. The international edition of the album was released on April 12, 2011.
In its first week, the album reached the tenth spot of Billboard 200 and topped the Classical Albums chart. The album also entered the top ten in other countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, New Zealand and the Netherlands, and it peaked at number one on the Austria Albums Chart. It would later be certified platinum by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry.
Back in Italy, in their hometowns, the people were ecstatic. These three teenagers had achieved what only a few Italian artists had achieved, success in America!
By now, every program in America wanted them. The phone was ringing off the hook! They appeared on The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Early ShowThere was no stopping them. The people of America had spoken and what they were calling for was, Il Volo. And slowly, the rest of the world also recognized their achievements.
The chatter began about these three teenagers with voices like “angels!” But what’s most important is what happened to the boys! These boys who came to America thinking, “who will know us there,” were now becoming a household name. And how did that happen, a little thing called PBS…

IL VOLO album cover for IL VOLO Takes Flight

Next week we follow the guys to Detroit where they stepped on the stage at the Detroit Opera House and sealed their fate!
We continue to follow their footsteps Through the Fields of My Mind….

THREE SMALL JEWELS by Daniela

Searching here and there, I found this old video. It is an interview made with Al Rojo Vivo, for the promotion of the CD: IL VOLO.
But how young they were, just kids, but what mature answers they gave.
I understand that even then they were clear, what they wanted to do, and what they wanted to be: IL VOLO.
I translate for you and I remind you that I try to guess the presenter’s questions from their answers.
Enjoy…
PR = Welcome to Miami…… in Italian???
P+I+G = “Benvenuto a Miami”, JORGE, PIERO GIANLUCA IGNAZIO
PR = Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio, Ignacio in Spanish.
I = Nacho
PR = How did you meet, you are young, you have been friends for a long time …
P = We met in an Italian television program: We arrived there singing individually and on the fourth episode, the director decided to combine our voices.
PR = And at that moment did the three voices come together perfectly? Did the three voices mix automatically?
P = Yes, we have three not completely different voices, but Ignazio and I are tenors and Gianluca is baritone. There are three different types of voices that mix, make Il Volo.
PR = Do you prefer to sing in a group or do you prefer to sing separately?
I = This project was born as Il Volo, it was not born as Ignazio Boschetto, Gianluca Ginoble or Piero Barone, it was born as Il Volo!
G = From the beginning.
I = From the beginning, so we prefer to stay together, united.
PR = Your age.
P = 17
G = 16
I = 16
PR = Explain to me why you sing opera and not songs like Justin Bieber.
G = We do not sing opera, our genre is pop-lyrical, because on our CD there is no Nessun Dorma (surely then, they did not imagine that in the future they would also sing the Nessun Dorma), La Boheme, and there are no not even songs like Baby or One Time, for example, by Justin Bieber. Ours are pop-lyric songs, and it is also a novelty, because it is the first time that 16-year-olds have been singing this type of music.
PR = But also sing a song called O SOLE MIO.
I = It is not an opera song.
P = It’s a traditional song.
G = It is a song of the Italian tradition, because on our CD there are various songs, in Spanish, in Italian and in English.
P = Type: Smile, by Charlie Chaplin, is in English.
Which are part of the Italian tradition: O sole Mio, Un Amore così Grande, Il Mondo.
I = Also a traditional song in South America ….
P = Spanish, the Reloj (hints at a small refrain)
G = They are all performed with modern arrangements, with the addition of guitars …
P = Because we are three young boys
G = So that’s the beauty of this new project.
PR = Whose idea was it to bring you to the US from Italy and put Spanish songs on the CD?
G = I’ll explain, we are the first Italian artists who signed a contract directly with an American major, it is the first time.
Ours is an international project, it is a music that is enjoyed all over the world, not only in Italy, in fact we are having excellent results, we are really happy.
P = We decided to do the CD edition in Spanish, because we feel that Spanish is a language that belongs to us. We have fun when we sing in Spanish.
I = We must remember that it is also thanks to our producer.
P = Yes, our producer, Humberto Gatica, thanks to him we recorded the Spanish version, because he speaks Spanish and in the recording studio, he helped us with the correct pronunciation of Reloj.
G = But then you know that he is Lucho Gatica’s nephew.
PR = There is another group called IL DIVO.
G = Yes, let’s say that Josh Groban, Il Divo, Bocelli, our genre is more towards these singers.
PR = Which Italian singer would you like to inspire in the future?
I = Certainly Pavarotti was the Italian singer who had the greatest success also abroad, as regards the opera.
P = In pop-lyric I would say Bocelli.
I = Each of us would like to do the same career as Bocelli
G = Yes, Pavarotti or Bocelli
P = But we hope to make a good career like “IL VOLO”.
PR = You are young, do you see other plans for the future outside of music?
P = No, no, always in music, we always hope to sing together, our dream is to sing all life. In my opinion, we were born to sing.
G = We are three different voices, but one soul and when we sing together, when there are harmonies, we feel all the emotion we put into singing.
P = Three voices and a soul.
Thanks to music, we are able to transmit our emotions.
PR = Do you have a girlfriend?
I = Let’s change the question !!
PR = Why doesn’t this job allow you to have a girlfriend?
G = Yes, it allows, but it is very difficult.
I = Let’s say we don’t want to talk about it, we want privacy about our love life.
PR = I understand, you are reserved for your private life.
P = Perfect, we prefer to talk about music.
Music is our job, they are one thing.
Girlfriend is another thing.
PR = You want to keep the two things separate. Private.
We better talk about music.
But what do you do in life, besides Il Volo and privacy?
I = Piero loves to upgrade cars, to transform them.
P = I make cars faster.
G = I play football.
I = I love planes.
PR = Airplane pilot? But really or remotely?
I = I’d really like to, for now I’m training in a program that is a type of real simulator.
PR = Do you want to say something to your fans, maybe future girlfriends?
G = We hope that all our fans really like this CD, because, as Piero said before, you can feel all the emotion, all that we transmit with our voice, is on our CD.
P = And it is a CD suitable for all people of all ages. We sing in three languages and there are songs for young and old generations, for everyone.
G + I = It is a CD for everyone.
PR = As you say in Italian: no to piracy.
P + I + G = NO ALLA PIRATERIA!!!
Every time I find these old videos, for me it is a reconstruction of some missing moments, as I started following Il Volo after Sanremo 2015, but it is always a confirmation of how big these kids were already, at that time, mature and always well educated.
Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio, you have started the road well and over the 10 years you have not lost or changed your path.
Well done!!

A Grammy for the Guys??? – from Daniela

Daniela sent us this article and link.  This has been making the rounds on the various social media sites…. awesome news!

Today a nice article has been published on IL QUOTIDIANO written by ANDREA SPINELLI about IL VOLO and the new album.

It’s an interview that the guys have released during Sanremo.

IL VOLO: LONG LIVE LATIN POP

 The young tenors change sound: “We have to renew ourselves, risking, the future is brave, we start again from Miami, with an album produced by Emilio Estefan, and a duet with Gloria”

Sanremo, 11 February 2018 – “You never get used to such a great emotion”, assures Il Volo, talking about the hot shiver on the stage of the Ariston, once again chosen as the crossroads of his career. Three years after the triumph of Grande Amore, in fact, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble sought the reassuring applause of the Festival before flying under the Miami sun, to open a new chapter in their lives. “Returning to Sanremo was a great honor and we are extremely grateful to Baglioni,” they explain. «A standing ovation has been added to the applause and the return has become perfect».

 Coming down from the stage has the idea of trying again? Maybe in a few years?

Gianluca: «Once you have won, you can return to competition in Sanremo only with a song able to repeat the feat. Because, at that point, you can not be content to compete in the group, but you are forced to head a race ».

 Actually, Sanremo was decisive three years ago.

Piero: “At the time we suffered the idea of doing concerts abroad and returning to Italy just for the holidays, so we said: let’s go to Sanremo, or it goes or breaks it. We had nothing to lose, because in Italy we were known, but, let’s say it all, not too much appreciated. We could not find with the public the empathy we had abroad “.

 What do you think has discovered the public of you thanks to the Festival?

Piero: «That we are not the only guys able to sing O sole mio and Un Amore così grande, but we know how to embark on even more risky enterprises, succeeding, I think, quite well. Just think about the concert with Placido Domingo in Piazza Santa Croce in Florence, born a year and a half ago from a winning idea of our manager Michele Torpedine ».

Now, however, the time has come to change direction.

Piero: «I believe that an artist should stick to the times and, why not, throw an eye to the genres and sounds that enliven the musical scene at that time. Although the classic never dies, in fact, ours is a genre that someone can consider old. So we decided to give a good refresh to our music, putting ourselves in the hands of a great Latin producer like Emilio Estefan, who will certainly not sing us with a symphony orchestra ».

Gianluca: «In these years we have taken refuge in the covers with the awareness that it would have been useless to record a record of unpublished classic, because the audience of our concerts jump on chairs especially when we do O sole mio e Un amore così grande. People are fond of that kind of repertoire and to propose something really new you have to change the register ».

 Where does the road start from?

 Piero: «From Miami, we fly there on 19 February because on the 22nd we have the Lo Nuestro Prize in which the best Latino musicians of the year participate».

Gianluca: «In 2019 we will do a ten-year career, people abroad have learned to appreciate us as well. Now we want a Flight 2.0. In the new album there is a lot of rhythm but also beautiful vocal parts, Il Volo with a new sound. More pop, a light voice, but always of quality ».

 Produce Estefan. Has the superstar wife come alive?

 Gianluca: «Yes. There is a duet with Gloria Estefan and we are honored. But the meeting between an icon of Latin music like her with a group that has our characteristics you can also wait for it, others are absolutely surprising alongside our name. Starting with the first single ».

 Who would have liked to host?

 Ignazio: «Shakira. But already Gloria is so much, so much stuff. “

 Why this Latin turn?

 Ignazio: «In the United States we have succeeded at seventy percent with the adult and thirty with the young, while in Latin countries like ours we have the girls under the hotels».

Gianluca: «When I read the criticisms that define us as young old people, I think  are not completely unfounded at times. I am 23 years old and artistically, I would like to live a little more my age. I am convinced I can do it only now, because then it would be difficult to go back “.

 The Stones used to say ” Il tempo è dalla mia parte ”: time is on my side.

 Gianluca: «True. We have different tastes, vocality and dreams. But everyone knows that it is the group that makes the strength and that it would be stupid to divide our paths. But to continue walking together we must renew ourselves, risking. The future is of the brave ».

 Turning the world, what was the most surprising discovery?

 Ignazio: «We went to Tokyo thinking of sushi and we left again admired by an extraordinary culture and social organization».

Gianluca: «In Japan there is a civilization and an order that are difficult to find other latitudes».

 A few stumbles?

 Piero: “A few gaffes, rather. Like when Ignazio, for example, before the Pope, instead of saying “His Holiness” came out with “salve” ».

 Tokio, Sanremo, the album with Emilio. Another dream to achieve?

 Piero: «A Grammy we must try to win it. In Sanremo we would have liked to sing one of the new pieces. But it would have been useless to play there songs that the public could not find the next day on social networks or on music platforms. “

Gianluca: «Emilio has said it: this will be a Grammy Album. And we believe it ».
