Bailamos! We Dance! Il Volo, Dance! – by Daniela…

This is another lovely post put together by Daniela!  Grazie mille!  🙂  Glad everyone seemed to have a good time commenting on Friday’s post.  Yes, I left it up there on purpose, since there were so many back and forth comments!  🙂

The new CD is finished recording and now …… they will DANCE !!!

In fact, Piero Gianluca and Ignazio are getting ready to shoot their video for the launch of the new CD, and they will dance on this record.

Gianluca says that there are a lot of surprises coming for us, we can not even imagine!

He says, ladies and gentlemen, even the Volo will dance ( the voice of Ignatius saying: HELP)

I really want to hear the new record, but now also to see our guys dancing.  And you, are you anxious too?

Thank you to owners of pictures – wait, it was mostly, the guys!!  🙂

Great job, Daniela!  🙂

Here they are while doing dance lessons.

Guys ….. move the pelvis ….

Myron’s Musical Musings on their new Album! – by Myron Heaton

The guys have landed safely in Miami!  They are “here” for a little while, even if we are not lucky enough to run into them, like the fans in Miami….

From Myron…

I had planned to wait for the new Il Volo album to review but I have been getting a number of emails and phone calls about the album that have inspired me to comment ahead of time. I will still do a review of the album later. Since all of the people that have written and many of you on this Flight Crew site that I have met at concerts or at the Il Volo Fan Faire conventions are friends I had the urge to share some ideas about your concerns for this coming album.

First of all the basics: Gianluca, Piero, and Ignazio come from backgrounds that are founded in well-trained, formal voice work – private voice lessons. If you look at some of the concert or album reviews that I have written on this site (see Flight Crew archives) over the past 6 years you will see what factors are involved in the mechanics of good singing. It is not easy!

Our guys have that kind of formal work in spades! You may remember the tour they did with Barbra Streisand and how they had their vocal coach and she had her own. She started working with that coach 6 months prior to tour and had the coach drop in once in a while during the tour. This keeps the singing honest, true and high quality. For the Notte Magica concert in Florence that DVD had a “behind the scenes” video that showed the guys working with a vocal coach. As Barbra would probably say: you never stop needing a vocal coach if you want to do things right.

This kind of training will give them the prowess to handle any kind of music they choose to perform – including the Cuban-influenced Latin music that they are learning with Emilio Estefan.

From the beginning of their career the guys have chosen great music to sing and it has often been in different languages from different cultures: Italian (of course) , English, Spanish, French, and German. Some times they have gone back and redone parts of an album to sing a translated portion in Spanish that they had previously done in Italian or English. So a whole album in Spanish is nothing new. They have done it before and we loved it. Regardless, the songs they have chosen have been excellent and a person does not have to understand the meaning of the text to get the musical message from that song. Passion wins through in the end and these guys have great passion by the boat- load to add to those beautiful vocal instruments.

So now we have the guys working with renown producer, Emilio Estefan – husband of great singer, Gloria Estefan to produce this album. To get a little hint look at Gloria and her music history. She is a well trained singer and she has done not only Cuban – influenced albums but also, mainstream jazz, Broadway and Latin pop songs. She is superb in her wide variety. Recently, she released an album called “ The Standards”  which features songs the guys have also done like Charlie Chaplin’s “ Smile” and she has a number of Frank Sinatra and Henry Mancini songs that are American standards on that album. Go to Youtube and look up Gloria and Smile. Give a listen. She is very good. I am telling you this because Gloria gives a hint about the kind of background not only she has but also Emilio. So I would say that the guys are in good hands. From what I have heard they are doing a song with Gloria. Great ! I hope they do other things with her. Some of the “guest” singers they have worked with in the past left much to be desired (compared to the guys) . Well they can’t all be a Barbra or a Gloria.

The guys have indicated that they want to explore different musical cultures. They have for the past number of years, done an excellent job of exploring their own Italian heritage and the classical background they share. Now, while they are still young, they want to branch out. This is a good thing. It does not mean that they have stopped loving the music they have done up to now. It does not mean that they are leaving those of us in mainstream USA behind. It just means they want to try new things and they want to take us along with them on the journey. Hopefully, tried and true fans will want to venture out with them on that journey.

Nothing can erase the great albums, PBS specials, and the concerts that they have done so far. Those events will always be part of their heritage and our memory. Will this new album be equally successful ? From what I hear they are doing a number of songs that are original – never done before – unpublished. That is gutsy and brave.

If you want to get a hint about the new album listen to some of Gloria’s Cuban/Latin pop albums. Of all the Latin American countries Cuba has had a very strong influence on North and South American music. This goes back long before the Castro government came in. Even in Hollywood you can see from the movies in the 1930s and 1940s that the influence is strong. Go to Youtube and look up Gloria and “ Conga “ have some fun.

I had a chance yesterday to watch a video of the recent Sanremo event. Il Volo was not in competition this time but, rather, guests to add some sparkle to the show. They sang three songs – one from the Notte Magica album and tour – one from earlier album and tour and a song that was not in the earlier albums. It was great to see them back there again. I will save this review for another time.

Thank you, Myron!!

A note from Jana…

And to all of you out there that are saying “that is not my kind of music – pshaw!” and shame on you!  Remember that old “Life” cereal commercial?  “Mikey won’t eat it, he hates everything!…” as they say…  Then cut to “hey look, he’s eating it!”  Well, to all of you “Mikeys (and Michaelas)” out there – just TRY it, you might LIKE it!  I am not a personal fan of rap, or hip-hop, but if the guys are singing it, then I’ll listen to it.  Remember, like Myron said, they’ve been singing this same type of music now for nearly 10 years!  When was the last time you had a job, the same job, for 10 years?  It gets boring after a while, right?  Didn’t you want to branch out?  Do something different?  Change it up just a bit?  That’s all the guys are doing!  They have a long career ahead of them and they will probably try just about anything and everything in the next 20 plus years.  Some of us may be under ground or on a shelf by then, but they will still be going strong!  🙂   Does anyone remember how many people said “I don’t like opera” when Notte Magica came out?  I’m sure there were plenty!  These guys are chameleons!  But leopards, too!  They may change their colors up once in a while, but a leopard can’t change its spots and we can’t change the incredible voices these guys have.  Speaking of the animal world, they are also like zebras, where no two zebras have the same pattern of stripes – our guys are as unique and individual as they come, even amongst themselves!  Remember, you are never too old to learn or appreciate something new!   – jmv

I know we will all turn into “THIS” Mikey, real soon!  🙂

I guarantee it!

Miami – Palms Court! Fri, Oct 13, 2017

Ok, so sorry,  not sure what is going on with Facebook,  but if you go to my page: Jana amore il volo, hopefully you can still see it.  I reposted it again.

Ok, as you have probably figured out by now, I was in Miami for the short performance of Il Volo on Friday, October 13.  Yes, Chris, Sharon, and I jetted off for Miami on Thursday.  Although it was on various Facebook pages, I stumbled upon it quite by accident.  I just kept wondering where this Estefan’s Kitchen was that Barbara and Piero kept posting from?  We knew they were in Miami, at their place, recording their new album, but were they like IN their private kitchen?  I just had to find out!  So, super sleuth that I am, I Googled “Estefan Kitchen” and what came up?  A website for a restaurant, run by the Estefan’s!  Upon further investigation, as I scrolled down, a headline link caught my eye “don’t miss the Italian singing trio Il Volo on Fri, Oct 13!”  What?  I looked further and saw it was free!  Of course, that was one of the most expensive free concerts I’ve ever been to!   Lol!  After booking the hotel, table, Uber rides, plane fare, etc.  🙂  However short their performance was, it was glorious to see them, yet once again, performing on US soil.

There are likely better versions of this video out on You Tube, as we didn’t have the best vantage point.  For some reason, they put all the paying fans to the side of the performance area.  However, the guys knew we were all there and made a point of at least looking our way a few times, as you will see from the video.  🙂   You also have to put up with my often off-key singing and various comments.  You will hear about the middle of the show, someone saying “is that really necessary?”  I just want you to know, it wasn’t about me.  The person in front of me moved her phone to a different spot, blocking the other person’s view.  I was literally, in the middle.  This is a totally unedited version, starting with me getting up from our table.

With the luck of Il Volo, it was a beautiful night – hot and breezy.  We were also lucky enough to attend the sound check, where they sang 2 songs – El Triste and O Sole Mio.  The guys didn’t come on until over halfway through, well after 8p.

I would like to give a shout out to the Estefan Kitchen!  Although we had to wait a bit for our food, it was excellent!  Even the leftovers warmed up the next day, eaten in our hotel room.   After 6 caffe/chocolate martinis, it was time to say goodbye on Sunday evening.  Chris and I said goodbye to our favorite bartender, Andres, and he was kind enough to take a picture with us.  The place has only been open since about April, but it is fabulous and the management and wait staff, superb!  The drinks, will knock your socks off!  The sangrias and caffe martinis were our favorites.  Our hotel, the Hampton Inn on Biscayne Avenue, is where we stayed and within walking distance of the “kitchen.”  (which we proved several nights in a row – even after coming back a little tipsy!)

We also had fun at South Beach Miami and Chris and I went to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, which was also pretty cool.

When we arrived on the 3rd night in the row and sat in our now “favorite seats,” Andres wasn’t there right away and we thought he may have the night off.  However, a bit later, he did come around the corner and saw us.  He came over to me and held out his hands for me to take, like we were old friends!  Almost like Cheers, but I don’t think he knew our names.  I’m sure if we had been there longer, we could have asked for our usual and would have had it served promptly!  Oh, Andres, how I miss your martinis and only wish you could come and make them for me in my kitchen!  I would even let Chris and Sharon borrow you!

Chris and I came home on Monday, and Sharon on Tuesday.  It was short, but a pleasant, long weekend getaway – from the pre-winter doldrums, we know are coming!  Unfortunately, the guys had left Saturday to return to Italy, so there was no chance we would see them again before we left.

Oh, one more thing!  If you ever go to Miami, at least where we were, be very careful walking!  The city is not made for walkers, or drivers, for that matter!  You literally took your life in your hands when trying to cross the street.  Darned near had a heart attack after a few Uber rides.  After that, I sat in the back seat!

So, Ciao and Enjoy!  🙂

(I tried in vain several different options to uploading/downloading this, finally giving up and uploading to Facebook, however, I couldn’t download it to my own computer!  I guess I’ll have to take the SD card out eventually!)  By the way, it says the link cannot be embedded, but if you click on it, it will take you to my Facebook page.  🙂  (ok, any techie person out there that can figure this out, please let me know….)

Grande Amore – 100 Million Views!

Latest on New Album – Article Translation from Daniela!

Daniela was kind enough to find this article and translate it for us here!   We already knew it was going to be Latin/Spanish and geared toward the Latin crowd, but I know we will love it anyway!  Spanish is actually easier to understand than Italian and we know the guys will put their heart and soul into it, as always and will have a lot of fun making this one!  Here is translation from Daniela!  Grazie mille! or should I say – Muchas gracias!  🙂

Today is published by Optimagazine this article about the new album of IL VOLO.

It will be released in 2018 with the promise of a big pop revolution: IL VOLO is already working on the new unedited album.

Begin to leak the first clues to the new album of IL Volo, which will be totally pop-kind as they had anticipated in recent months, during the World Night Tour – A Tribute to the Three Tenors started from Vienna on April 21st.

The lucky tour has touched several European and Italian cities, and then landed on the American continent. Since September, the group has resumed the tour in Latin America, and is now working on the new pop album designed for the public and the Latin market. Produced by Emilio Estefan, husband of celebrity Gloria Estefan, the new album Il Volo will almost certainly be released by 2018, for which the three boys have been searching for melodies and lyrics, all in a newer popular dress. And from the words of the three tenors we really have to expect a great revolution!

“It will be a new pop project and we’ll surprise you, maybe there will be something with Ermal Meta and Tiziano Ferro, but we’ll see.”

Although they had expressed the desire for a break from the stages, Ignazio Boschetto, Piero Barone and Gianluca Ginoble left clues that make it clear that they were already in the studio to work on the new album of unpublished, but without hurry. “We will publish the new project when it is ready, we have no deadlines,” said Piero Barone.

At the moment, the band is devoting to the next album, and the world tour will resume in late November for the last two live concerts in Japan: November 28 will perform in Tokyo, and December 1 at Kawasaki.

The Magic Night Tour – Tribute to the Three Tenors has brought the latest record project by Michele Torpedine to the stage, which honors the show “I Tre Tenori”: Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras and Placido Domingo, who participated in the album. Both the record and the tour have hit a huge hit all over the world with numerous dates sold out.

From Gian…”something’s going to change….”

A cute little birthday greeting from Gian to Ignazio!

Guys in the studio on Igna’s birthday – looks like he wants cake!

Time to Record!

Ciao – Jana

Personally Speaking~What’s Next??~ by Mary Bohling

The boys have been teasing us a bit about what is next on their recording agenda.  It seems that it will have a Latin flavor since they are working with their friend, Emilio Estefan.  And remembering how we, the fans, love the  tantalizing Latin beat of “Volare,” it would seem that we would embrace that style.  But, just for fun, let’s consider some other styles of past musical icons that they might choose to emulate.

Since our boys have such a propensity for the beach, maybe they would like to try the Beach Boys’ style, one that has stood the test of time with its’ catchy tunes, captivating rhythm, and great harmony.  The guys would really get into spirit of fun following in the Beach Boys footsteps.

Wouldn’t it be great to hear Igna  taking the falsetto part of the Jersey Boys’ repertoire?  He would be so good at it.  He did some improvisations with the high notes of “Somebody to Love” that blew our socks off, plus he has the added asset  of his adorably endearing facial expressions (those eyes!!) to go along with the voice.

Remember the Ink Spots?  Most of you probably don’t.  You might  want to look them up.  Their harmony and rhythm were so contagious they always left you wanting more.  Remind you of Il Volo?  Gianluca might have to dig down a bit to match the low notes, but hey, that guy can do anything he sets his mind to, right?  They recorded some beautiful songs that would be great for our guys.

Speaking of great trios, let us not forget the Nat King Cole trio.  Talk about sweet and mellow–just the style for Il Volo.  Is anyone more sweet and mellow than our boys?  Gianluca could easily handle Nat’s romantic solos with his own brand of style and panache.

And “sweet and mellow” brings to mind the Williams brothers, mainly Andy.  Imagine Gian doing “Moon River”  what a treat that would be.  Piero, being the more dramatic sort, doesn’t often show us the softer side of his vocal technique, but he sings with such passion and expression that we know he would be breathtakingly spectacular doing some of Andy’s romantic songs.

Well, we will have to wait and see what the finished product of the most recent endeavor will be, but  we know that it will be all in true ILVOLO STYLE.  You can’t improve on perfection, and perfection is what they are.

So stay calm and get out your dancing shoes…..Tango, anyone??

A New Album is Coming! A New Album is Coming!

Ok, it’s going to be a while.  still…

Get out your wish list.

Here’s my top five in order of desire:

1) If it is unreleased music, I hope it is songs written by them.  I would love to see one or all of them, on the piano, playing and singing their own work.

If they do more covers:

2)  “All of Me” (the one written by John Legend) ~They have toyed with it on home videos a few times.

3) “Somebody to Love”  (of course)

4)  “Hallelujah”Can you even imagine how their “one soul” would sound on this one? I might even love it more in Italian.

5) “The Prayer” ~ I’ve wanted this one for a long time.

6) “Canto Della Terra”  (I know I said five…I lied.)

And anything else they would care to put to song.  What’s on your wish list?
