Il Volo fans are not like any other fans in the world. To them Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca are family! To the older fans, they are our children. They are very much a part of our lives. Family!
I started writing my articles back in March because I realized that these fans were truly concerned about these three young men. They worried about them going home to Italy where we were hearing horror stories about Covid and how it was killing Italians. So, everyone went into panic mode. It seemed their departure was so sudden. They turned off the lights and went home! They canceled their last three performances and the next thing we knew they were on their way home. But being true to form, what did they do? Like good children, they checked in with us as soon as they got home and told us they were safe and, they needed to be with their families now.
Over the next three months they went into quarantine but, they stayed with us and shared their lives with us. A day didn’t go by that one or more of them appeared on Instagram and Facebook to cheer us up. They shared conversations with their friends and, they shared their everyday lives with us. We joined Piero at 4:00 PM every afternoon for his singing lessons. Ignazio brought in singers and comedians to entertain us and let’s not forget he took the time to introduce us to Nico! As to Gianluca, we watched him play piano and sing beautiful songs to us! And then there were the special songs of prayer by each of the guys and who can forget Ignazio’s “Almeno tu nell’universo.” No, they never left us.
And what did we do? Over three and a half months we learned about them, their childhoods and their private lives by sharing, every Sunday, an episode (total 17 episodes) in one of their lives.
Then the quarantine was over and, they left their houses. But the messages continued, go out but wear a mask.
The one thing they wanted more than anything was to get back to work. Well they did have the commitment with Dolce & Gabbana which gave us a spectacular Sunday event. And there was the concert in Monte Carlo but, something was missing.
Saturday night they showed us what was missing!
But let’s step back a minute! When the guys were entering the Arena on Friday, they were stopped and asked about the situation of Covid. Ignazio answered. “It’s time for us to leave our houses, start having fun again but with responsibility.”
Friday afternoon we watched them at sound check give a performance to those present at the Verona Arena that would rival most concerts. And then later in the evening they returned to the Arena for light check. Ignazio and Gianluca were making videos with their phones, while Piero was wandering around. Ignazio got his attention.
Ignazio to Piero:What are you doing?
Piero:What are You looking at?
Ignazio:The light that is there.
Gianluca: It’s Beautiful.
Ignazio:The gorgeous light. Gorgeous! Gorgeous!
Of course, Piero pulled out his phone and started to video.
But what was it about the lights that got Ignazio’s attention? Well they were as Ignazio said, “La Luce Stupenda! “The lights were gorgeous,” but I think he was thinking about the last lights that he saw on stage.
Saturday night when the guys were entering the Arena before the show they were stopped and asked this question by a woman reporter:
Reporter: You are International entertainers therefore you know how much the live dimension is missing. But above all you have defined the stage as your natural element. So, how is it for you to return to a live performance tonight?
Ignazio: It’s like giving candy to a baby. We are happy because we missed it. We missed it to die for but not only for our personal thing but because this is to me the music slowly restarting with the safety measures. But we are restarting it all with Italian music. It’s like I am starting again to grow up on stage and hope that it can be a message of hope for the groups, in the cities, in the emerging local areas who want to start making music. We have to continue making music and we hope that by 2021 full concerts and full live.
It was an absolutely beautiful statement that said it all! What I liked best about this statement was Ignazio saying“It’s like I am restarting it all with Italian music. I’m starting again to grow up on stage…”What did he mean? This time he is starting in Italy not America. He finally feels like he is at home!Bravo Ignazio! You are home.
When the guys arrived on stage, they had a message for the world and all people in the industry:
Ignazio:2020 will be remembered as the year where the world would be constrained to be turned off.
Gianluca:For the music employees the verb turn off means the end of the show, when the curtains close and it is the waiting moment for the next show, but this time the waiting lasted more than expected, the silence was unavoidable.
Piero:Now, the world is getting ready to start again! Now the moment has arrived to raise the curtain! Now, we will turn on the music!”
This beautiful statement was followed bythe performance of the evening.Their choice of“Nessun Dorma”sent an even stronger message. It’s says we may have to perform under these new world conditions, but we don’t have to change who we are or why we’re here. In this ancient Arena we look to the past while following the path to the future. From their first note the whole arena lit up. Their voices were clean and crisp. Their presence was illuminating. Their notes rose above the Arena into the night sky to let the world know music is back! The final note of their song sent the final statement. All three voices rose in unison and their voices sent forth a note that took our breaths away!It said We Have Returned! ”Turn on the Lights.”
Since this year there will be no other concerts ofIL Volo, I was waiting with a little anxiety in front of the TV, to be able to see our beloved ones, live from the Verona Arena, on this beautiful evening in early September.
Already the first short videos, and photos of yesterday’s rehearsals, sent our hearts in arousal. 💓
I believe that Ignazio, Gianluca and Piero were also excited, to be back on stage, and also because the Arena always has its own charm.
We should have been there for the concert a few days ago, instead we have to settle for this performance, unfortunately due to virus.
In the video, Gianluca says, “We have just arrived for the rehearsals, the three microphone stands are already in position.”
(But how beautiful are Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio?)
I= (he says to Piero) What are you doing?
P = I look at you.
I = Damn!! What a great light there is.
G = Beautiful right?
I = A wonderful light. Gorgeous, gorgeous.
I believe that you have all noticed that the need for spacing has caused all the seats to be removed from the rows on the ground. In this way a large stage has been set up in the center of the Arena (which is usually leaning against the steps). The little public that will be admitted will be all around on the steps and well spaced. Only in this way could the show be done. Of course, the impact is very different, but let’s be satisfied ….. even if I have to say that having the central stage is really very nice: “Guys, use it also in your concert!!”
Gianluca = “See you tonight at the Verona Arena, on RAI1 official!”
Ignazio = “Finally we start again!”
Piero = “Tonight we will sing on one of the stages that is most dear to us, that of the Verona Arena, for us it is always an honor to be there.See you in the Arena or in prime time on Rai 1!”
The boys were also interviewed by SEAT, sponsor of the evening.
Woman = We are here with Il Volo. I know that you have an international audience and therefore you know very well how much is missing from performing live on a global level, but above all you have defined the stage, your natural element, so how is it for you tonight, to go back to performing live?
I = It’s like giving candy to a child!
We are very happy because we were missing a live performance.
We missed it, a lot, but not only for our personal reasons, this is a message that the music is restarting …. slowly, slowly, with the safety measures, but we are starting again. All Italian music is starting to hit the stage again, and we hope it can be a message of hope, also for all emerging bands in the various cities, who want to start or continue making music. We hope it bodes well for a 2021 full of live concerts.
Woman = Thanks a lot, guys, see you on stage.
I + P + G = Hello, see you later.
Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca were also interviewed by Radio Italia, here’s what they said.
Radio Italia = It was instead a relaxing summer for the three guys from Il Volo, who had to cancel their concerts initially scheduled: “We had time to rest, relax and sunbathe. Now we will commit ourselves to making music,” they told live on Radio Italia. For the trio, however, it is not the first live in compliance with all the containment measures: “We did a concert in Montecarlo and it was strange: between darkness and masks, you don’t understand people’s expressions,” said Ignazio, who he also wanted to send out a message of hope: “The music must restart,” he exclaimed to our microphones. “We will definitely be back in 2021, in compliance with the rules. We will continue to celebrate 10 years of career,” Piero then reiterated. The three boys, very young, finally invited all their peers to behave responsibly, to protect themselves and others.
And here we are finally at the evening.
How much emotion …….. I am sitting comfortably on the sofa with my husband and we are waiting for the long preview to end ……… and finally ….
I = 2020 will be remembered as the year the world was forced to turn off.
G = For all show workers, the verb to turn off corresponds to the end of the show, when the curtain falls and silence is the wait for the next show.
But this time the wait lasted longer than expected and silence was inevitable. P = Now the world is preparing to start again.
Now is the time to raise the curtain.
Now, let’s turn on the music.
Conti = Il Volo
Vanessa = What a moment you made us live, what can we tell you?
Conti = Thanks guys.
G = Good evening everyone.
Conti = I must say: You are always better!
Vanessa = Guys we were, Carlo (Conti) and I, in silence looking at you, with goosebumps, good!! Of course for Puccini’s Turandot, but also for what you said at the beginning.
I = Yes, it is a doubly exciting moment, because we have been standing still for some months, with music on the stages. There is music on social media, but on the stage it is a different emotion, and especially it was a great emotion to remember all those who unfortunately left us, due to this Covid.
It was dedicated to them. My thoughts go to them and all their families.
Conti = You three are wonderful stars who travel the world and bring Italian music up in the world.
Vanessa = Singing live, of course you miss it, but what do you expect from this future?
G = Here I read a billboard that says: “Not even a pandemic will stop the music,” that’s the point.
This year’s motto is let’s turn the music back on, but in truth, the music has never turned off, and it has kept us company all these months. As Ignazio said, especially for us, it is our job and we missed it a lot, not being able to sing for all of you. Sooner or later we will start again, we will go back to singing in concerts, which are a way to escape from the world, two hours of joy and tears.
Vanessa = For you and the entire audience, it’s obvious.
P = When we leave the house, our fans often ask us when the concerts will resume. We want to say that this is an evening of hope, and to tell everyone that in 2021, in any way, we will return to the stage.
Vanessa = Good.
Conti = You were supposed to be here just a week ago in concert, instead it’s postponed. It’s just, all just postponed, but we’ll be back. Thanks, Gianluca, thanks Piero, thanks Ignazio.
Vanessa = Thanks for being here with us.
G = (addressed to the audience) We love you.
G+P+I = Bye!!
Conti = Great protagonists of this evening, they had the task of starting the official part.
What skill, what elegance, what beautiful words!!
And what about the final high note? They kept it very long ….. congratulations guys!!! My husband and I looked at each other in amazement, that final VINCERÒwas amazing ….. they never stopped emitting their voices ….. great !!!
Only one song, unfortunately.
There are many singers who perform and I remember that they all sing for free, and that the evening was a fundraiser, to support the families of the show workers who have not worked for months and are without salary.
The audience of the Arena, standing for Il Volo.
And here is Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, visibly happy after their performance, for a small video for the Arena.
I = We send a big greeting and a big “good luck” to arenalive.it. See you soon, we hope to start again, the music has to start again.
I + G + P = Bye
But it’s not over yet ….. when everyone finished their performances, Seat Music Awards, showed a beautiful video in homage to Il Volo, as the final theme, and on the beautiful music of GRANDE AMORE, the final titles flowed.
Today, UNICEF has published an appeal made by Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca.
Il Volomusic also joins us and launches an appeal in support of our extraordinary campaign to guarantee masks 😷 and other safety devices ⛑️ for health workers 👩⚕️, at the forefront of Italian hospitals 🏫.
Together, we can make a difference!
P= In the daily fight against coronavirus, we stand alongside children and families in Italy and in the areas of the world most affected.
G= We are bringing: masks, respirators, overalls, gloves. Join us.
I = Let’s fight together for this emergency in Italy and worldwide. Your help is precious.

On Sunday 22 March, IL Volo was a guest on a television program conducted by Mara Venier, DOMENICA IN.
Of course, during the C19 period, the guests were not in the recording studio, but connected via Skype, each from their own home where they are confined.
At the beginning of the connection, the wonderful images of the success of the beautiful American tour are sent on TV. Sensational images, which made goosebumps.
Mara welcomes Piero from Naro, Gianluca from Montepagano and Ignazio from Bologna. Mara thanks the boys for being connected and says that they have recently returned.
Piero confirms that they had been in America since January, have been on tour for two months and have had to cancel the last three concerts to return to Italy. He says that from there they did not realize the situation that was in Italy.
Mara asks how they learned about the serious Italian situation.
Ignazio replies that being in daily connection with their parents who were here, they knew what was going on, and made the decision to return, when it was announced that flights to and from Italy would be canceled.
They thought about the many people who are on tour with them and who have families, children at home. And they (Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca) even since their returned, have not yet seen their families, because they are in quarantine.
Mara asks who of them is with the family.
Gianluca replies (the connection with Gian is not beautiful, his voice is breaking up) that he is in quarantine with his mother, who has been with him on tour. Now he and mom are in Gian’s house, he explains that the parents’ house is bordering on his.
Gianluca explains that the virus has totally changed people’s lifestyle, the right restrictions have been put by the government, to avoid contagion, therefore Gian turns to young boys, who must understand how important it is to stay at home, because nobody is immune to this virus, in addition to the respect for the enormous work that doctors, nurses and all the rescue personnel are doing, risking their lives every day.
Mara thanks Gianluca and hopes that, although there have been audio problems, everything has been understood.
Then she says that Il Volo is very popular all over the world, therefore she considers their appeal to young people important, also because, they too are young boys.
Piero says it is the duty of those who are part of the show, and therefore has more audiences, to make their support felt in these causes. He says that when arrived in Naro, he spoke to the mayor and felt her serious concern. Unfortunately there are people who have not understood the seriousness of the moment and try to avoid the rules.
These people, not very intelligent, have no respect for the gift of life and not even for the people who risk their own every day, to save the lives of our loved ones, especially the elderly.
Mara says it is so and thanks all three again for being in touch with her and says that they are the right people to give these messages.
Ignazio adds that, despite the inconvenience we all suffer from the virus, he realizes how much, everything that was taken for granted yesterday is actually very important, like a hug or a kiss. Today you think of it as a precious thing, a gift that life has given us.
On all the negative sides, there is always the positive to be found.
Mara says that she is experiencing this period like a nightmare. She says that until a month ago, the topic was to talk about the songs of Sanremo, and now we are experiencing all of this and when everything has passed, we will all be better people.
Then she sends the video of Piero and Jovanotti: NESSUN DORMA.
Piero says Lorenzo is number 1. To Jovanotti, Piero said that hospitals in Sicily are not well equipped, and would not be able to endure an epidemic, therefore with fellow Sicilian artists, they launched a fundraiser, with which they will buy equipment for hospitals. (remember that Gianluca and Ignazio are also supporting fundraising for hospitals in their area.)
Mara thanks again Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio and recommends staying at home and wearing a medical mask.
Ignazio adds, that one must stay at home, but one must not stay still.
Mara asks Ignazio how he spends his day and Ignazio says that they are all sportsmen, he trains, plays, sings, plays with the Playstation, then he has fun with his dog.
Gian adds that he is learning to play the piano, and then he is pampered by his mother, who is his treasure.
Mara asks Piero if he is alone or if he has his girlfriend and Piero with his hands makes the sign “zero”, and says that he has no girlfriend, he is in isolation alone, fortunately with the microwave, because he cannot cook.
Ignazio has tried several times to teach him without success, while Ignazio cooks well.
Mara asks Ignazio what he cooks, and he says that he likes to experiment with vegetables lately, since he is now vegan.
Gianluca says that he is not vegan and that he likes arrosticini very much. (Arrosticini are typically made from sheep meat, or lamb, cut in chunks and pierced by a skewer. It is cooked on a brazier with a typically elongated shape.)
Ignazio resumes the speech he had started saying that everyone must stay at home, but they must not stay still, because there are so many fundraisers to help, and therefore from home, you have to give your help and support these good things. Helping doctors and civil protection, giving what everyone can, with a small gesture anyone can be helped.
Mara thanks again Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio for this connection and sends a kiss to them. 😘😘😘
Grazie per le vostre parole: Piero, Gianluca e Ignazio.
Non avevamo dubbio del vostro buon cuore. ❤️
Thanks for your words: Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio.
In these days of quarantine, there are live videos, between our boys and their friends.
This is Piero with Jovanotti. I state that Jovanotti, (also called Jova, but his real name is Lorenzo Cherubini) is a famous Italian singer-songwriter, rapper and disc jockey.
The live is very interesting and therefore I translate roughly for you.
Friendly greetings between Piero and Jovanotti.
Piero says that he returned three days earlier from the US where Il Volo was on tour, but they did not realize from there what the situation was like in Italy.
He is now in Naro, and is in quarantine. He says that quarantine stimulates creativity, he must commit the days, the mind, he takes advantage of it to study, and read.
Jova asks where the other two are and Piero replies that everyone is at home, Gianluca is in Abruzzo and Ignazio in Bologna.
Jova asks if there is someone at home with him and Piero replies that he is alone, that he has not yet seen his parents and his sister. Piero says that in America they didn’t have the feeling of what was going on, that if you put on gloves and a medical mask, maybe you looked badly.
Now also in the US the situation is different.
Now everyone looks to Italy, also as an example and then we receive many messages from all over the world of solidarity and we must be proud of this. Jova asks if they were on tour and Piero replies that they were on tour since January and they have had to cancel the last three concerts.
Piero explains how fortunately they managed to return to Italy, because he says that after Trump’s speech where he said he would close all flights from Europe, and for Europe, Alitalia, sent a completely empty plane to the US to take the compatriots who wanted to return to Italy.
Jovanotti says that Italians always show the best side when there are emergencies. He says it is in these cases that Italy proves to be a united country.
He says his daughter was also in the US for study and managed to catch one of the last flights.
Then he asks Piero if he is afraid.
Piero replies no, because he is convinced that we live in the safest country in the world, even if he admits that in Sicily, the health facilities (hospitals) are not exactly vanguard, but there are many people of good will. Therefore, by contacting some friends from Agrigento, they thought that, for now there are few cases in Sicily, but if the contagion were to come as strong as in Lombardy, the health facilities would collapse immediately.
And so he and these artists from Agrigento decided to start this fundraiser to help these hospitals. They will channel the donations to this bank account, but they will not give the money, but they will ask what the hospital needs and will buy it and give it to them. All coordinated with local authorities.
Piero says that the duty of the artists is to spread this initiative and says that today there are no records sold or concerts. Today there is only one concert, that of staying united and carrying out this great battle.
Jova greatly appreciates Piero’s speech and tells him that he is “great”. He remembers that they met quickly in a waiting room of the Catania airport and exchanged their contacts.
Then Jovanotti (who has many followers) invites everyone to follow this beautiful initiative, very important.
Then he tells Piero that he wants to hear his voice, he says that he knows that Il Volo sings all over the world bringing the Italian melody, especially the songs in Italian, and says that they are a rarity.
Piero replies that it’s nice to see Americans, even the Japanese, who get excited even if they don’t understand the words.
At this point Jovanotti asks Piero to perform the NESSUN DORMA.
Piero says that his neighbors will be tired of hearing him, as long as he always sings. Jova says they told him that the summer rental agencies have requests to rent apartments near Piero’s !!
So Piero shows the view from his balcony and Jova says it is a beautiful place, a real historical center.
Then he tells Piero that he appreciates Il Volo, because they also love to joke and play down their image, also lending themselves to slightly different interviews, such as the one they did with Fiorello, proposing Il Volo in a rock version.
Piero confirms that they try to bring the message of bel canto to the younger generation too.
Jova asks if they have ever sung in China and Piero confirms yes, in 2015, the year of the dog. Then they do a search and discover that when Piero was born, it was the year of the rooster, then they try, laughing, to make a symphonic version of Jova’s song.
A message from Fiorello arrives (on their video) and recalls a Sicilian song and immediately Piero sings a piece of it. Jova is not Sicilian and does not understand the meaning, so he asks Piero who tells him to ask Fiorello. (It has a mischievous meaning, that’s why Piero replies like this.)
There is also a message from Ignazio saying that they have abandoned him. Jova says no and asks where Ignazio is, Piero replies that he is in Bologna and that due to the jet lag he cannot sleep
So they talk about the importance of sleep to have a rested and fresh voice before the concerts, and Piero also recommends eating apples, and also cold water.
Jovanotti asks Piero if he ever met Pavarotti and Piero says that he missed by two years before their start as Il Volo.
(In this 2013 video there are Pavarotti and Jovanotti in a song by Jova, during “Pavarotti and friends.”)
So they talk about the performances on people’s balconies, these days, and confirm that it is the most beautiful thing, that those videos have gone around the world and that everyone imitates us for this, because it is the most beautiful thing in the world.
Piero tells Jova, that his dad, when he had the auto bodywork shop, put him on the hood of customers’ cars and had him sing UN AMORE COSÌ GRANDE and GRANADA.
Jova says that he is almost 54 years old, Piero’s dad, Gaetano, is only two years older.
Piero says that La Boheme is his favorite opera and Jova says he saw it a year ago at the Metropolitan.
Then Piero sings a piece of the Cavalleria Rusticana.
Piero confirms that he is studying to do an opera, but it takes months and months of study and tries to do lessons via skype with his teacher from Bologna.
Jovanotti tells him that when he debuts at the opera, he wants to be there, then asks if Gaetano wanted to be a singer, and Piero says no, but his grandfather was sincerely sought for singing and says that he and his grandfather have the same voice and he tells how his grandfather noticed his potential.
So Piero tells of the economic difficulties that his father has suffered, in order to take him to various competitions or singing lessons, and Jovanotti says they seem like stories from centuries ago, instead they are recent and very beautiful stories and Piero says that Ignazio and Gianluca also have similar stories.
Jovanotti concludes that now that everyone has time, they must use it to rediscover many things that are not done during busy days.
Then they say goodbye with affection.
Piero has also made specific messages to persuade people to collaborate to raise funds for hospitals in Sicily in the Agrigento area.
