During the tour instore in Rome, Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero, had an interview in the headquarters of the newspaper Repubblica, with the journalist Ernesto Assante, who was never very generous in his praise of IL VOLO.
This resulted in an interesting interview that I translate for you. There is only one video, unfortunately not very qualitatively beautiful, but that shows us our guys perfectly at ease.
Assante = It’s 4:15 pm, we’re live from Repubblica, via Cristoforo Colombo 90 Rome, see behind me, I’m not alone, I have a band called IL VOLO
G = A band? An unusual band.
(they sing live an acoustic version of Musica Che Resta, Ignazio plays the guitar)
I= (after the acute) Sorry, sorry.
Assante = He wanted us otherwise they think you are fake.
G = Exactly
Assante = Because they have the big voice, they are not IL VOLO, who knows who they are (he jokes) …. Gentlemen, welcome, it is the first time we meet really, we had only heard once by phone, long ago.
Start by a question, really stupid, stupid, stupid ….. How did you become IL VOLO ? – a band that has a great success with the public, a sequel and a warmth – a love, so great, be of the boys , therefore maintain a “normal” life in a condition that has nothing normal, you grew up in public, you grew up on television, in front of people, you were little, you’re not anymore, you’re soon bigger than me … then, how difficult it is grow this way, and if it did you good or bad.
P = It is not so difficult, I must tell you that we three have the same past in common, and the same adolescence, fortunately we met at the age of 14/15, we live for music, for the greatest passion that we share it. It takes much “group spirit”, but the fundamental thing is that we do not tolerate the teasing and the whims, do not exist in our group, then, we help each other, we support each other.
G = Maybe we sing a kind of music that is close to people, also because they are our traditions, it is our music that is the “bel canto” which is then appreciated above all abroad. So, maybe that’s why we approach the people, we also saw the more than positive result of Sanremo, a podium, after the victory of 2015, we are happy with the result.
Assante = Damn, actually you were first, more than often, during the week.
So, beyond what you’ve just said for the relationship with traditional Italian music, why do they love you so much? What are your strengths?
G = And why do they want us so bad as well? (certainly refers to journalists)
Assante = What do you transmit to people? I’m interested in your point of view.
I = Maybe because ….. I think that the musical genre influences the personality of the person, a person who does rock and roll, influences his personality. We have always maintained what have always been our personalities, always with humility and with passion of what we are doing.
So the key to getting to people’s hearts was that, so they love us so much and follow us.
P= Because there is nothing built.
Assante = That is, the truth is that you are so off the stage ……
I = We are so off stage and on stage, during an interview and during a lunch.
P = And according to you, why?
Assante = I am convinced of the fact …
I = He cannot explain it.
Assante= The thing that has always surprised me, is your passion for traditional music, being very young, this is not normal, if it were so, all the boys of your age would sing romances, or arias.
G = This is true, but ……
Assante= Let’s say that the thing that surprises, in this country, but that has also allowed your success, because you are the only ones to be young, and to do a type of traditional music.
G= It is clear that normality is not even, having so many tattoos and talking about drugs in songs.
Assante= But no, of course.
G= Let’s say that normality does not exist.
I = There are habits
G= Exactly, then everyone tries to express their passion, in the end we do nothing but do what we like best, SING. Then, that this is a musical genre that is heard more by adults ….
P = But it is not true …. Spotify gives us a good answer …. but maybe because we are the only ones to do it, after many years, and we are the only “young”, because our goal, we always have said, is to bring this kind of music, which was born right in our country, and maybe even a little “forgotten”. No young man has EVER proposed it again.
Assante= Let’s start again from the initial question. Before doing IL VOLO, what music were you listening to?
G = Look I tell you what I was listening to: I grew up with Gaber, Guccini, De Andrè, (Italian singer-songwriters) so, you figured, completely different things, my father inculcated this style, then, growing up, I became crazy, completely John Mayer. I love the guitar a lot, even if I do not play it, but I love a more acoustic genre. My greatest idol, however, has always been Andrea Bocelli, that made me really approach this vocal genre.
P = But each of us has different tastes, different personalities, I have always listened to the classical world, I love Elvis, I love Queen, but in the shower, I listen to the classics, Pavarotti, Domingo, this kind of music, I really like Julio Iglesias .
Assante= (indicates Ignatius) and the rocker here? The boy with the tuft ….
I = No, I’ve never listened to so much music, I fell in love with the songs, I love Stevie Wonder, even though I do not know many of his songs, I’m madly in love with “Over Joy”, “You and I”, “Isn’t She Lovely “. Or Brian Mcknight, I really like it, Joe Cocker …
P = Even Lenny Kravitz
I = Yes, Lenny Kravitz
Assante= However, this is noticeable, that is, that your singing styles, especially when growing, have changed, there are those who are more linked to opera (Piero), who has a middle ground (Gianluca) and who, above all in Sanremo it has been noticed more than the other times, I do not say that he has freed himself from lyrical singing, but has sung with greater autonomy (Ignazio).
P = (turned to Ignatius) you could not wait (and gave him a little flip on the head)
I = It’s not, I could not wait, but it’s what I am, so it’s me.
Assante= This allows you to do different things too, are you working on a change, an evolution?
I = It is not so much a change of ours, it is more pulling out what we really are, rather than a change of what we do.
Assante= Castaldo (journalist who always gave very low marks to IL VOLO) in Sanremo did not give you 5 1/2 to make you just a courtesy, but because he saw, that something …
P = But that was the biggest victory.
G = But we have to travel on two different tracks, because what our international public wants, it’s just the Italianness, just the made in Italy, that maybe in Italy, for that, there’s a bit of snob about it , as if sometimes we were ashamed to be Italian.
Assante= But sometimes it’s not like that.
G = Sometimes unfortunately yes.
Assante = But try to think, the French listen to a lot of music, French, but modern.
We Italians, we have a traditional repertoire that for us Italians is old, but for an American, it is not.
P = Excuse me, I want to say this, we do not do anything strange abroad, because we are famous all over the world? Not because we are better than others, but because we sing this kind of music that is famous outside of Italy. If we take a look at the past, the only Italians who have succeeded abroad, and abroad I do not mean South America, which is like Italy, but Europe, North America, Japan, all those countries, were Luciano Pavarotti, Bocelli and vabbè Modugno, but it was a special case. But Pavarotti, Bocelli, Il Volo, have one thing in common abroad, the same kind of music.
There must be a reason.
Assante = I agree with you, it’s like us here, like rock and roll, and true rock and roll, no one plays in Italy. If you feel the real rock and roll, you love the original.
I = What do you think about Achille Lauro? (in Sanremo he sang on a rock and roll rhythm) because there is a bit of rock and roll.
Assante= I confess that I find that the piece of Sanremo is very beautiful. It’s a rock and roll piece and it’s fun.
I = I like it too, I confess that I’m not the type that listens to the text (the song by Achille Lauro has been much disputed because it talks about drugs), I only listen to music, I have to listen to music, for me the text goes into the background.
Assante= I like that too, it’s “reckless life” updated to the times. I found it nice, frankly, but let’s get back to your piece. I too appreciated this piece of yours, more than on other occasions, just because you seem more free, in being each of you three what he wants to be, that is, each of you three is finding his way.
P = Excuse me, but this album MUSICA, crown 10 years of career, is the tenth anniversary of IL VOLO.
If you read the titles, see the three personalities of IL VOLO, because from an “Arrivederci Roma” which is a genre more like an American crooner, it represents more his tastes (of Gianluca) there is a “Be my love” which is a classic, then there is a “A chi mi dice” where the voice of Ignazio prevails more. Let’s say we give vent to our personalities.
G = Even the second single, “Vicinissimo” marks a path of more contemporary sounds, we are no longer linked to the too classic world.
Assante= You want to make me a little mention of “Vicinissimo”, even vaguely, only for 30 seconds
P = You know we never sang it live.
(Piero and Ignazio begin the song but in a low tone)
G = No, so it’s not good and then it’s bad, if it’s done like that you do not like it and then it’s bad.
Assante= Do not be, never. There is something that you could do to me, so at the moment, even if only hinted at, you can also say no.
G = Let’s say “ A chi mi dice”, do you know the chords, Ignazio?
I= Yes, I try …. (they start to sing the song, Piero and Ignazio sing in chorus)
G = It looks like church, you see, it’s difficult.
Assante= It’s okay, you touched the key point, to someone like me, who are a music freak, you can say to me, I’m unpleasant, bad, but I’m a fan of music and what I like is this, the ability to be wrong, to try to play a music, not to think that you are, as you were born, a television product built at the table. I like to discover that you play the guitar, that you sing the pieces that you like.
G = But we want them to come out well.
Assante= On that we agree, but you understand what I mean, you have a matrix of a television program, a talent, which has given you the imprinting, and getting rid of imprinting is not easy.
P = It is clear.
G = We will get there slowly. This CD however marks the beginning of a new IL VOLO, because the other CD’s …
P = It’s not like we do rock.
G = Absolutely, but there is the fact that we begin to have our repertoire, we are not always tied to the “covers”, always things already done and redone, that people say, “Oh well we have understood, now enough”. So there are already three unpublished and for us the beginning of a change, because however we are preparing a new project, for the end of the year, then in 2020, we will do two years of tour, even releases of new albums, we are starting to have a new important path.
Assante= Is it difficult to get along in three? You know that the real bands quarrel a bit, because to be together, they cannot always love each other.
P = But we too, it’s a bit like marriages, cohabitation is not so simple. Also because we have not chosen ourselves, we have been put together, but the important thing of our group, I think is mutual respect. In the end we get along like this.
G = Beautiful the booklet (of the cd) right? It is very elegant.
Assante = Yes very elegant and beautiful.
G = Did you still want to ask a question?
Assante= Yes, the last one. Between making records and singing live, for you, makes the difference, that is the idea, so that someone like me can fall in love with IL VOLO, it’s the concert, go and see you, as it was for Sanremo …..
P = You’ve never been to one of our concerts?
Assante= No, unfortunately not, Danilo (Danilo Ciotti, press office of IL VOLO) has invited me so many times ….
G = Will you come to Cavea della Musica this year? (in Rome)
Assante = It’s the easiest thing.
P = Together with Castaldo, arm in arm, so he will give us a 6 1/2.
Assante= I objectively, on the 6th at Sanremo, I gave it to you, and also for me it was the first time, live, you gave an idea of conviction, of truth, in that song, singing it just as you wanted, that according me, it was not yours before.
I = Look, being in three is sometimes a fortune or misfortune, you know everyone has their own personal idea. I personally, with all due respect, never imported me 5 1/2 or 6, because in the end one must not go chasing the vote.
P = Long life sincerity.
I = I am like that, I think that an artist does not have to chase votes, if an artist likes, likes, if he does not like amen, there are many other artists that can be heard. For us, say 5 1/2, 6, is our way to say that slowly, slowly, we try to make ourselves appreciated by people who are always very susceptible to us (the critical and journalists), also because often, in Italy, but a bit in general, it is used to have prejudices, without knowing people. A little like Castaldo, he did not know us, when he met us, he finally realized that we are three simple guys.
G = As he believed, even worse.
I = Three guys who like to joke, we are not set, as he thought, and that’s the problem, nobody goes chasing the votes, one just wants to be known, to be understood.
Assante = The result of Sanremo was right for you?
G+I+P = Yes, absolutely.
I= For us yes, for someone else maybe not.
Assante = For someone else actually not, but it was the result seemed to me balanced, the three juries were three different juries.
P= Only one thing, in my opinion, maybe I’m wrong to speak, but maybe they had to give a little more recognition to Bertè. Only this, for the rest, was right.
Assante = You’re right, in the end it was fourth.
I = In the end we talked about it. It is not Sanremo that makes the classification, finish first, second, third, fourth, but it’s all week, also because Sanremo, it’s not the end, but the beginning, it’s a little like when we won, that Nek said, “Now you have to show what you can do,” and he was right. Anyway it’s true, everything starts from there.
P = On the contrary, this has also stimulated us, we thought we had to give our best.
I = Start everything from there, the promotion, the CD, the tour. You have to be focused, because in any case on tour, ours is a fairly difficult repertoire, and so you have to always be focused, make a date after another, travel.
G = It is always necessary, in my opinion, to know the managers ……. because fashion, you can make a song that lasts a month, two months, three months, if you do not do another one, it’s trouble.
Assante = The thing that I want to know, if the return of listening to Sanremo, there was, as today there have been here the Zen Circus (other participants of Sanremo) and have said that many people who would not have them never listened to, seeing them in Sanremo, now they listen to them. Certainly there is a part of the public that, looking at Sanremo to see Zen Circus, Achille Lauro, Motta, discovered IL VOLO, beyond your popularity, there was someone besides me, who did not listen to you, and now, yes?
P = There is certainly another person Michele Monina (another very fierce critic with IL VOLO). He did not listen to us, but we had the opportunity to meet him one morning in Sanremo and I must tell you that we did not know him, to me sincerely, he was unpleasant, after I met him and I said: “But you’re an ‘other’ person.”
Assante = But people, people’s reaction? There was much more young audience.
G = Definitely.
Assante = The Spotify effect has been seen.
G = The Spotify effect, yes, certainly more than in the past, because the song is slightly more modern. Our audience is not exactly that of Spotify, which is also listened to by 15-year-olds. But there was a super-positive response also from the younger public, as not.
P = But the answer and the greatest satisfaction for an artist I think is to see the pre-sales of their tour, which are going very well, so I’ll see you at the concerts.
Assante = Before closing the interview, give us another live piece.
I= We do not know what to do, but we do it.
Assante = Meanwhile, do you think about it, the next live event, when?
P = We leave now for Japan in May, but then we come back, in June and July in Italy, then again abroad, and at the end of the year, we are back in Italy again.
Assante = Very good. The dates found on the site of IL VOLO, on the Facebook page of IL VOLO, the album has a very simple title MUSICA…… and then, at this point, I speak, while they decide, they will not take much ….
G = Of the new song or the last one? What do we do?
I = HELP.
G = What can we do?
I = The cool thing of being in a group … the nice thing about being three is that we create harmonies, and we …
G = Then let’s make IL MONDO, the final ….
P = See, three seconds ago I said “Let’s make IL MONDO” and they do not.
G = Wait, let’s make harmony (Piero taps him on the head). He plays the central part (Piero), I play the lower part and he is the tall one (Ignazio).
I = Are you there? We can start?
(the final harmony of IL MONDO begins … beautiful !!)
Assante = Thank you so much, it was a pleasure to have you here, come back when you want …. and thanks to you (to the public) for following us.
I would say that the boys have always been kind and polite.
Assante is a journalist who, together with Castaldo and Monina, have never had good words and good criticisms about IL VOLO, indeed, they often denigrated and wrote badly about them …….. but without ever knowing them personally.
This year in Sanremo the boys have personally met Monina and Castaldo and now, with this interview also Assante.
Undoubtedly the tastes of these three journalists-critics, are deeply distant from the style of our boys, but this does not allow them to denigrate the hard work of these young people and even sometimes to despise them.
But now they have known them and have changed their opinion on them, not on their style, but certainly on their personalities, because these journalists have recognized that Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca are very simple guys and prepared in the music field. Their votes at Sanremo 2015 did not arrive at 4, now they gave 5 1/2 and even 6. The road is long but the journey has begun ….
I noticed in the interview that the boys, always in a polite tone, managed to remove “some pebbles in the shoe”.
Crew, I do not know which way to start telling my day.
I just came back from Milan, where there was the instore for the presentation of the new CD, MUSICA.
My feet are broken, and I’m very tired, but I want to fix immediately, the emotions that have marked the day.
I had already decided to go to Milan on Friday, but on Thursday, I received a letter from the official fan club, which warned me that I had been drawn, to take part in the mini-live that would take place a couple of hours before the instore.
Here I am with, in my hand, my copy of MUSICA, the new CD.
Waiting for the mini-live.
What about the Duomo behind me? Always beautiful to see!
After a couple of hours they call us for the mini-live. After going through the check of documents, here we are all lined up in the corridor, waiting.
We will spend more than an hour in the corridor, with an incredible heat, because it was a beautiful spring day.
Meanwhile, we fans talk, and who should I see but Veronica. She bought tickets for Jana, for the Verona Arena.
Veronica sends you her greetings, Jana !!
Really nice, Veronica!
And finally they let us in and tell us to sit on the ground ….. is not the best of the comfort, but they explain that they can stand up only at the bottom, otherwise nobody can see before.
Ok, I sit on the ground …. what we would not do for these guys !!! 😜
We are 150 people admitted to the mini live.
The director of Radio Subasio comes and begins to present the event.
He says that during the week in Sanremo he was able to know Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca well and he says they are really special people (we already knew that) and he says that Radio Subasio will always play the music of IL VOLO.
Begin, the notes of, “MUSICA CHE RESTA” …
But now here they are ……. IL VOLO….. Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca !!!
Did you manage to see me in the video?
They are really beautiful and funny, they sing and we all sing with them. This is a video of mine and of course what you hear is my voice!!
And here’s another video, of the same time, we were all singing. There was a very relaxed atmosphere.
My legs hurt so much to stay in that position, but it did not matter!!
Gianluca also made a video!
A small interview follows from the director of Radio Subasio:
RS = In this CD there is music present and also of the past.
G = Yes, it is a slightly different album from the others we did in the past, because however there are more contemporary sounds, the choice of songs, also, but without abandoning the classic, such as “Be My Love” sung by Mario Lanza, but also by all the greatest tenors.
This represents a new beginning, a new path, which will lead us to have “a new face”, we sing with what are our true voices, our musical styles, which are different. It represents us 100%.
RS = Are you a little more pop, compared to the past, is it true Piero?
P= We have undertaken this collaboration with Michele Canova, we are fans of Mengoni, Tiziano Ferro, Jovanotti, and Canova has produced all the albums of these great artists and we have decided to collaborate with him and I must tell you that we are very satisfied and surprised of the work he did.
RS = Well, Ignazio, in the meantime, congratulations.
Congratulations because of you, this week, there was the image of you give a caress on the cheek to Mahmood (applause).
A gesture of great class, “chapeau” to Il Volo but above all to Ignazio, because this is the thing that remains of this Sanremo, as you have accepted this result.
P = The most famous profile of Italy (that of Ignazio)
RS = Proving that it is absolutely not true that they did not like the result, and that they are envious …. the envious one is another (Ultimo).
I = There is a whole story behind that caress. Because behind the scenes, while we finalists were waiting, Mahmood was sad and I asked him:
“Excuse me, because your face is so sad, you are living a beautiful experience, we are in Sanremo” and he said, “The microphone did not open when the song started.” I told him, “What are you saying, you have a good song, you’re good, you’re among the first, you have to be happy and not sad.”
So when they said he was the winner I went to him and whispered to him, “What did I tell you?”
RS = So, you won the festival 4 years ago, in 2015, this year you came back, because you had to celebrate 10 years of IL VOLO activity, and you showed that, despite having won a Sanremo, and after having participated as super-guests, you are back in the race.
G = Because you do not have to live Sanremo only with the spirit of competition, certainly it was a courageous choice, but from guests to competitors, should not be understood as a step back, it was our choice, we did it for you fans, that you’ve been waiting for us for a long time. (applause)
It’s nice to be able to live Sanremo and sing for four nights in a row, even for you who have followed us, and voted.
RS = Yes, voted, because IL VOLO on Friday evening are splashed at the televoting. What did I tell you? Televoting !!
P = Now, girls, we know that in Sanremo you have voted so much, now give your banking code to Ignazio, who will think about making the wire transfers to you.
I = Besides giving them to Mahmood, I give them money too !! (laughs)
RS = It is nice to feel the warmth and the affection of your audience, now they have bought the cd and then they will come to see you on tour in concert.
P = One important thing, I read that you ask for dates in Sicily, in other places ….. in a few days, we will publish many other dates, now we have announced 7/8, there will be many.
I = It will be a summer tour.
RS = Long
I = It will be a summer tour and then there will be other surprises, indoors (indoor concerts).
RS = Let’s say that they are back in Italy and do not leave us, they want to be heard and sing live. We listen to another song, because we have to get ready for the tour, for the concerts, from today the new album is out, we need to learn the new songs, like “VICINISSIMO”.
I= We decide, “A CHI MI DICE” or “VICINISSIMO”
G = “A CHI MI DICE” because they already know it.
I = Let’s say to “A CHI MI DICE” and then we end up with “VICINISSIMO”.
RS = “A CHI MI DICE” in the version of IL VOLO is the track number 4. This song was brought to success by the BLUE and was written by Tiziano Ferro.
After the song, the director of Radio Subasio, asks if there are any questions, no one raises his hand.
Only a 10 year old girl, name’s Chiara, close to me, asks to speak.
Chiara tells the boys, that they are very beautiful and that she feels Gianluca as a brother!!
Here is the short video.
The boys are very relaxed, Gianluca is the most elegant, with light trousers and gray jacket, Piero has a grey turtleneck sweater and black trousers but wearing fluorescent yellow sneakers, very showy, and at some point asks the fans if his shoes are beautiful.
Ignazio wears a flannel trousers and a simple mustard-colored sweater, he looks a lot thinner in person and all three are really young, young men.
The director of Radio Subasio, still asks if anyone wants to ask questions.
A boy takes courage and says that he follows IL VOLO since they won Sanremo and he likes them a lot.
A woman says they are very good and would like their greetings, for her 86-year-old mother.
Another boy says that thanks to IL VOLO he has established many true friendships.
In short, no real question, and then I make a sign, I have a question, or rather two.
They give me the microphone and they tell me to stand up. My legs are numb for the position on my knees, but I get up, too bad that there is no video of my intervention ….
Me = I’m Daniela and I’m from Brescia. First of all, congratulations for Sanremo, you were really great.
In the fourth evening, that of the duets, you did a wonderful duet with Alessandro Quarta, do you think that, in any of your concerts, we will see the participation of Alessandro Quarta?
G = We cannot say anything but there is the idea.
P = It’s possible, let’s see.
I = First of all we must say that with Alessandro we have a good friendship and then everything is possible.
Me = I have another question, the American fans . . . I have been advised to tell you that when you go to do concerts in the USA, they would like a less classic program, because at the end of the concert they would like to stand up and sing and dance like Italian fans.
G= Now our program will be this, it is no longer Notte Magica.
I= Of course, the program that we will bring will be that of the CD …..
Me = … yes, but when you talk of concert on American soil you say you will do a more classic program.
I = ….. but if you let me finish (everyone laughs), I was saying that before we were bound by Notte Magica, but now we’ll bring more pop there too.
Me = Thank you.
I must say that I was not at all troubled to talk on the microphone and in front of everyone, in fact, I felt in the family.
I took the opportunity to talk about the American concerts, because then during the signature-copies, they stop for a few minutes.
After the series of questions, ended with my speech, they asked to pose for the final group photo and then we had to get out and queue for signature-copies.
These are the last shots I took before going down.
There were fans waiting to sign-copies, so we had to get off.
In a short time it became dark.
We who were at mini-live had precedence, so we all started waiting for our turn.
We were on the second floor, for the mini-live, about two hours of which one of waiting and one of mini-live.
I arrived in Milan by train, accompanied by my husband, but he was not admitted to the mini-live, so he had to wait outside …. what a treasure! When I got out, he said the voices were heard downstairs, so he figured out that I was talking at the microphone.
And here are some photos, while we are in the queue and we approach the boys.
Finally our turn has arrived, and here is our official photo – me and Beppe and IL VOLO.
I was able to make a few words with the boys to whom I brought your greetings, they signed the CD and also the book UN’AVVENTURA STRORDINARIA that I had brought with me.
I gave two kisses to each of them.
A few moments and it was all over.
Outside the library, there were Torpedine and Barbara Vitali sitting outside a bar talking to a couple of friends. I wanted to stop and talk to them, but I did not want to be inappropriate.
And so we headed to the train station, about 3 km to do on foot, as we had already done on arrival, under a hot sun.
We arrived at the station, everywhere there were great videos that projected the event of IL VOLO.
Finally on the return train, I was able to rethink that frantic afternoon.
It was worth it.
I was finally holding my new CD and I was so close to the boys.
They are really simple and genuine.
I hope this CD will lead to their sales success, which is really deserved.
We all attended the fourth evening of Sanremo, the beautiful duet of IL VOLO with Alessandro Quarta for the performance of “MUSICA CHE RESTA”.
It was a wonderful evening and we all had the opportunity to know this great artist.
Alessandro Quarta was born in 1976 in Lecce and has a great success internationally, so much so that CNN has defined him a “musical genius” – a true star, the result of a great passion for music. Besides being a famous violinist, Alessandro Quarta is in fact a multi-instrumentalist and composer.
In his curriculum he has collaborations with major world artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Jamiroquai, James Brown, Tina Turner and Tom Jones.
In 2017 he was awarded at Montecitorio as “Best Italian Excellence in the World for Music.”
Alessandro has released a wonderful interview with RECENSIAMO MUSICA, which I now translate for you.
The meeting with the violinist from Puglia in the aftermath of his performance at the Sanremo Festival 2019.
“There is no classical music and light music, there is beautiful music and bad music”, begins with a quote by the American composer Leonard Bernstein our chat with Alessandro Quarta, internationally renowned violinist whom we had the opportunity to appreciate on the stage of the Ariston Theater.
Hello Alessandro, welcome to Recensiamo Musica. I would like to start with your recent participation in Sanremo as a guest of Il Volo in the evening of the duets. How did you experience this experience?
“I would say very well, I did not expect the call of Michele (Torpedine) and the boys. As you can imagine, for me it was an important emotion, I deeply admire these three artists so young, theirs is a great musical talent and I think they still have a lot to give to the public, because they possess both the technique and the head, features that they do not always go hand in hand.”
What motivated you to collaborate with them?
“With the boys we share the same great passion, they for the beautiful song, I for the violin and the ability to combine beauty, passion, softness and violence together, aware of what you want and can give. I’ve never made a distinction between classical music and pop music. I appreciate everything that comes straight to the heart and makes you shiver, whether it’s Mozart or Il Volo.”
Musically speaking, however, there are some things you do not like?
“Surely, it annoys me everything that screams to be heard, but this is not necessarily enough to get noticed, indeed there is the risk that the opposite will happen, that the trouble will push you to change channels or stations. I accepted to collaborate with them because I consider them as innovators, certainly they were not the first ones, but they follow the great example set by Luciano Pavarotti and continued by Andrea Bocelli .”
“Musica che resta” has made someone turn up their noses, they have defined it as a too traditional song, because in your opinion the term “classic” is seen today as a negative assertion?
“It’s simple, everything that is labeled is already prejudicial in itself. I’ll give you an example, if you see me walking down the street I do not think you would ever ask me what time it is, because from my appearance I can look like a Mexican escapist, it’s much more reassuring, someone in a jacket and tie that, maybe, steals your wallet. Unfortunately what is said is true, it is the clothes that makes the man, the same thing happens in music. What I recommend to everyone is to listen before judging, especially to young people who are more likely to be influenced than they can imagine.”
Two years ago you were awarded as “Best Italian Excellence in the World for Music”, you the best person spoken to for this next question: how are art and culture in Italy?
“Bad, very bad, I’m not at all happy with how we are managing our immense artistic resources. Italy is living, of cultural heritage, it would take more responsibility on the part of the institutions, which should innovate and enhance our present, not just the glorious past. If we go back in time, between the end of the 1800’s and the beginning of the 1900’s, we would discover how the great musicians Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy have not been immediately successful, despite having reformed the art. Without them, today, we would not have what we have.”
You have traveled the world, you know many realities, because it is also a matter of mentality. We are loved around the world for Italian bel canto, why do we struggle to recognize it ourselves?
“Good question, I think we are a bit ‘too tied to the opinions of others’ and we trust little of instinct that suggests the kind of emotions we want to try. It is often just a matter of fads, you follow the herd rather than bring out your personality by praising your tastes. Then, for heaven’s sake, not everything can please, but why criticize something before even knowing it? A dish should not be judged by its appearance, it must be tasted and not photographed .”
You are a multi-instrumentalist musician, what binds you so much to the violin compared to all the other instruments?
“Do not ask me, I do not know what to answer, for me the violin is not an instrument, it’s part of my body. I also play the piano, the guitar, the bass and the drums, but there is no answer to your question, it’s like I was born with the bow in my hand, I started at the age of three, it’s part of me and he accompanies me around the world even simply resting in his beautiful custody (smiles).”
Speaking of your upcoming projects, February 22 will be released for the Italian market “Alessandro Quarta plays Astor Piazzolla”. What can you tell us about it?
“I think it is very important to bring the tango back to the atmospheres in which it was born, from sensuality to sexuality, everything that cannot be said in words or seen with images can be told through music. As we said before, the violin is not only a sweet and romantic but above all passionate instrument. For centuries it has been considered boring, in reality there is nothing more rock and erotic than its sound .”
What is the most important lesson you feel you have learned from all these years of musical activity?
“First of all, sacrifice is important, because wanting is power. Perhaps, the teaching that I have is to always remain oneself, even when in the dark moments nobody believes or struggles to understand you, it is in those moments that your real soul comes out, from that precise moment onwards people they will begin to know you for what you do and not for what you are.”
Really beautiful words of Alessandro Quarta, there is a lot of respect and a lot of affection towards our boys, even though they have just recently met.
Too bad that the video of the performance has been removed from RAI and therefore is no longer visible.
I AM WITH IL VOLO
And now I want to make you feel an instrumental version of “MUSICA CHE RESTA”, performed with the electric guitar by Marco Sgaramella, I liked it so much!
But last, I want to offer you this video. It was made by Emilio Munda, who is one of the authors of“MUSICA CHE RESTA”. He was in Sanremo, in the gallery, in the audience, and he filmed this video during the performance of the first night of the boys.
The stage is far away, but it is wonderful to see the public reaction.
And here is Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, with Emilio Munda, in Sanremo.
This is the respect we want for Ignazio, Piero and GIanluca.
The respect that comes from worthy people, from people who believe in them and in their talent.
Guys, the road is always the right one, forward with your head high.
The citizens of Montepagano, they want to wish well to their fellow citizen, Gianluca, and his family.
A few days ago, even if IL VOLO did not get the first place in Sanremo, the citizens decided to have a nice party in the square, in honor of Gianluca.
These sentences are extracted from an article in the local newspaper:
Everything is ready for the big party. Gianluca Ginoble, fresh from the prestigious podium of SanRemo 2019, will return to his country Sunday evening at 6 in Montepagano who prepares him a welcome with due honors.
Gianluca Ginoble is the pride of the entire city of Roseto degli Abruzzi, but above all the ancient village of the City of Roses, are ready to stretch, symbolically, a red carpet to the one who in these years, has brought up all the pride of our country.
In Montepagano, the Pro Loco, the Fan Club and the BereBene bar organized the celebrations. An entire country awaits him with open arms. The appointment has been set for him with banners and more. There will really be everyone there.
The preparations were hectic in the village while Gianluca was in Paris. And on his return, the party was ready in the square. The citizens were so many, it was certainly a moment of great joy for Gianluca.
But let’s see some images.
Gianluca with his father and his grandfather.
Mayor = Good, and thank you for what you do, for Italy, because we need to keep our name high.
Thanks to you for what you do for Roseto, because the reflection that you have as a person on our country is great.
This photo gallery is beautiful.
GIANLUCA GINOBLE: THE QUIET STAR.
Montepagano di Roseto degli Abruzzi, Sunday 17 February 2019.
Festival of the community of Montepagano, organized to pay homage to Gianluca Ginoble and Il Volo, after the 3rd place at the 69th Sanremo Festival with the song “Musica che resta”.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Gianluca Ginoble in front of so many people, outdoors, simply. Nothing screams and no unnecessarily high tones, because the important things are said better in a calm voice.
An intense chat came out of it, thanks to the reflections of Gianluca who a couple of times was also moved.
And in those moments when his eyes were touched with tears, talking about his family and the values that he transmitted of his beloved land of Abruzzo, the uselessness of living badly envying and hurting others.
Luca Maggitti,journalist.
And here is the interview by Luca Maggitti. (Click on the Twitter post above to view the video.)
LM = How much did it hurt, to you three, to see that video and now, you, Ignazio and Piero, where you are with this thing, how you are living it.
GG = But you must know that I, by character, I slip, all over me.(You know when it rains? The water wets you, but it slips away, that is, once dry it leaves no trace on you, it has not affected your person …… the same is the meaning of this first sentence….. even if the things said by the journalists, they are very bad, Gianluca intends that those words leave no trace of malice in him, nor even of rancor, it is like saying that he has swept away from his shoulders all the bad words.) I do not hate anyone, absolutely, because, you can also make mistakes, not in a press room in Sanremo, in a place like this, it should be a party, so it should not happen there. Everyone can make mistakes, in the end, of course forgive them, they are important people, the journalist in Sanremo and the music critic are important. The people are the ones who command at the end, (applause), the televoting is the most important thing. In the end, they can criticize, they can express their taste, because in any case they talk about musical tastes and may not even like our music. We do not have the presumption of pleasing all, absolutely, it would be stupid.
One thing is, the news, one thing is criticism, one thing is the offense.
Somehow, thanks to this thing, they are learning to know each other, they are really knowing who we are, as people, because I can understand that sometimes, repeating so many times “international success, they go around the world,” risk to have the effect on the contrary. People can be envious, they can be bad, they can express their negative thinking, but never fall into the offense. We, thanks to this Sanremo, somehow, we managed to get into people’s hearts, not only with the voices, but also as a person, what we really are, not just us (IL VOLO), but nobody deserves to have that treatment. (applause)
And here is a beautiful article published after the party and which I translate for you.
MONTEPAGANO – A starry sky, on a February evening with an unusually mild climate, a long banner and the notes of “Musica che Resta” framing the ancient village of Montepagano. This is the atmosphere with which yesterday evening a crowded square, not only of Paganesi but also of many fans arrived from different areas of Italy, has prepared to welcome the young talent from Abruzzo.
A party in honor of Gianluca Ginoble who returns to the native village of Montepagano, after having won the third place of the podium at the Sanremo Festival with Il Volo. A party announced a few days ago and that is part of the tenth anniversary of IL VOLO that began to take its first steps in 2009, with the participation in the Clerici program, “Ti lascio una canzone” (“I leave you a song”).
Gianluca arrives at 6.00 pm, welcomed by a thunderous applause. Peaceful and smiling he greets and opens with an interview in the square, moderated by a journalist. Gianluca appears visibly excited and calm, just as they are used to seeing him, his fellow citizens who have reserved for him a welcome, as an international star.
A recognition not only to the artist but also to his two traveling companions, Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone, who have made Italy known throughout the world and continue to represent with grace and style.
But how has Gianluca changed during these 10 years?
Walking through the village and collecting people’s impressions, comes the portrait of an affable and genuine boy, attached to his roots and his family. They tell us about Gianluca as one of them, calling him “Our Gianluca”. One who when he returns to his small village stops to take coffee at the bar of the village and does not miss an opportunity to greet and exchange jokes with everyone. One who could spend his summer holidays who knows where, but who chooses to go back home and stay on the beach of Roseto, with the affections of all time; one who at happy hour prefers football matches with friends.
Il Volo in their artistic career has trod the most prestigious stages, and known world-renowned artists. Following the steps of Bocelli and Pavarotti he succeeded in spreading the refinement of the bel canto also abroad and exponentially raising our country in the world.
An ascent in the Olympus of music, culminated with the victory of Sanremo 2015 with a niche music genre, but which in recent years is gathering more and more acclaim and that allowed them to know not only great personalities of the music world. In November, in fact, they enchanted Trieste singing the Inno di Mameli in front of President Mattarella while, last January, they performed in front of Pope Francis during the World Youth Day in Panama. Gianluca, despite his success, has appeared as the boy of all time who, with his simple and courteous ways, was able to make the Abruzzo geographically known also to Woody Allen, through the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
Strongly linked to these places, Gianluca never loses an opportunity to highlight its beauties anywhere in the world. The last one dates back to the Sanremo Kermesse during which he made Antonello Venditti fall in love (guest of one of the evenings), the arrosticini, in dialect “li rustell”, making him become familiar with the dialectal terms of Abruzzo, as can be seen from a funny video that is becoming popular on the web.
As he says in the interview in the square “This is a special place because I feel good when I’m here, it’s my home. I continue to live here and I cannot wait to come back to see all the Paganesi and my family. That is the most important thing.”
All this love for the music and for his people, last night he came back to him, through the shining eyes of the people, the manifestations of affection and the industriousness of his countrymen, of the Pro Loco, of the Fan Club, of the bars of the village that took care of the organization of the party, setting up even a refreshment for all those present. A way to pay homage with simplicity and warmth not only the artist but also the boy of 24 years (completed last 11 February) which is the pride of his country and of an entire region.
A young man aware that the road to go is still a lot and it is perhaps this humility, beyond the unquestioned talent, to make him so loved. When asked what he would suggest to the boys who want to pursue a dream, not only in music, but in every field of life, he replies that he does not feel like giving advice.
“I still have many dreams and goals to reach, for example learning how to play the piano; before telling others I have to tell myself. Study for the future!”
But the engine that drives this young talent forward is the family. He thanks his parents but above all a person. This is his dear grandfather, Ernesto, who since childhood gave him the love for opera music.
The evening draws to a close with the greetings of the mayor of Roseto, Sabatino di Girolamo, who rewards the singer with a plaque, thanking him for having made known the places of his land and makes them visible all over the world.
Here comes the greetings and takes a real bath of crowd that surrounds him. Smiles and photos with everyone, with its infinite availability and courtesy.
And compared to the controversy in Sanremo, on the insults received in the press room, the three singers have won not only on stage but especially in life, managing to beat offenses with the grace and good manners that are their hallmark.
Soon we will see Il Volo in a series of firmcopies (CD signing events) – as the singer himself says – then in March the tour in America and Japan. On the 22nd, “Musica”, the new album, will be released, with two unpublished works and then many other projects: a summer tour that could also include a date in Abruzzo.
Gianluca, you are really a treasure!
You said things that were really beautiful and without any rancor.
Only very intelligent and sensitive people would react just like you, to such malice.
The controversy over the treatment of Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio by the press room is not over yet.
Even today (Sunday) while I am writing this post for you, a television program has just ended, where the guests talked about Sanremo and how unjust the treatment suffered by our boys is.
The newspapers and television programs that have talked about this topic are many. I will try to make an overview with bad things, I would say very bad that they were written and that certainly will make you angry a lot, and also beautiful things.
Surely this collage of comments by the journalist Domenico Naso, will make you shiver with rage. He was in the press room and published these comments to brag about it, but the thing turned against him.
This man speaks of an “anti-VOLO brigade”, in short, a sort of group of people who do not like IL VOLO, (and this is their right), but which in any case tries to hinder the success of IL VOLO(and this is a really very vile act).
In the first comment, on the left, he comments on the famous video of the press room, published by his colleague Silvia Truzzi (always to brag), his comment says:
So much love for the mythical anti-Volo brigade of which I am honored to be a part.
In the comment at the bottom left he writes:
The Festival musically more “contemporary” than ever, is likely to crown again the three young-old. It’s Italy.
First comment at the top right:
Hallucinating ranking: IL VOLO among the first three.
Other than whistling, there would be to devastate the Ariston (the theater).
And now we do NOT DISPERSE THE VOTE.
OTHERWISE WE RISK FINDING OURSELVES, THE THREE THINGS.
Second comment on the right:
I’m sure the press room anti-IL VOLO brigade will be honoring my seat at this difficult time. True?
Last comment on the right:
Danger averted, I repeat: danger averted.
Abandoning the anti-atomic shelters, the country is safe.
(Sanremo was over and IL VOLO had not won)
When I read these comments, I was baffled ……. BUT HOW IS THIS ALLOWED ?????
I know that now you are full of anger at the comments of this “journalist”, but do you think he understood or apologized? Absolutely not, in fact he said that it is not about bullying, but he does not like IL VOLO, so it’s a long time that he’s ironic about it.
My friend Melina, posted on the journalist’s Facebook page, some worthy comments and then she wrote these words, which I consider absolutely correct:
So far I have not commented on the story of this horrible Festival of Sanremo, having to overcome the bitterness and anger, honestly I do not know if I have succeeded and if I can be sufficiently lucid, I’ll try.
To begin with we premise that the guys of Il Volo have been since their career began, subject to obstruction by the press and the media, this attitude has increased dramatically after the victory at Sanremo in 2015, becoming a real and a widespread and systematic boycott, which is capable of destroying them artistically and humanly, in fact the so-called “criticisms” were not directed only to their musical genre (our Italian melody, third in the world in importance), but also to them personally. They were called young-old, bimbiminkia and other similar amenities, they were accused of being presumptuous, whipped, and arrogant, all seasoned with offenses, derision and ridicule. With nobody else, the Italian press, the various “experts” and “opinionists”, have allowed themselves a so insolent and disrespectful attitude! “Those of us who tried to point out this situation were mocked and insulted.”
We come now specifically, I will not dwell on the fact that in a serious competition the juries remain the same for the duration of the event and that one is not removed in the last two evenings, to replace it with another, ridiculously called “jury of ‘honor’ which turned out to be “jury of horror”, composed among others by a cook, who invited on social networks to vote for a singer, four actresses, a friend of a competitor’s girlfriend and a former producer of a protagonist of the duets.
But as the whole world now knows, the real eyesore has been consummated in the press room where presumed professionals in the exercise of their function, have abandoned themselves to vulgar hysterical, inadmissible, incomprehensible, indefensible and unmotivated insults, epithets and personal offenses, as it is clearly visible in the videos circulated a bit everywhere. They are unworthy images of men and women, most of them with gray hair, who rant against three guys who are only doing their job, the one they study and sacrifice for. Now that this shame has come to the open, instead of doing mea culpa, the aforementioned professionals, are indignant for the violation of their privacy, moreover perpetrated by their own colleagues present, who had the brilliant idea to post the videos as if they were a pride (fortunately sometimes the impudent arrogant, they are also stupid)!
And fleeing, trying to limit the damage, citing tragicomics (tragic comedy) and childish justifications, invoking episodes of cheerful “goliardia” (university students) and finally proffering weak excuses with clenched teeth. Some of the journalists who have left an opinion have continued to turn over the omelette (take the excuse), others have cowardly preferred to delete the comments, remove the post and block. I quote here, for example, one of my thoughts written on the page of the journalist who recorded one of the incriminated videos, to boast of such dignity, comment that was promptly removed by the “lady”: “I AM A FAN OF IL VOLO. Il Volo are international stars, videos unworthy have been around the world, causing indignation and making a petty figure to the Italian press. This is the difference between you and them: they bring prestige to Italy, but you bring discredit!” . . . of course, the truth was not tolerable.
Melina
Yes, because you understood correctly, the apologies of the journalists were really ridiculous, they said that they were only goliardic scenes (similar to frat house antics).
Still here in Italy we are talking about all the bad stuff, the boys have not been on TV anymore, they are thinking about their tour dates. They really had an incredible response of correctness and education, they are really an example.
But now I want to show you some nice messages that have arrived.
First of all this comment is by Gianna Nannini, the evening of the duets wrote as follows:
“This is rock! Yesterday you split the Ariston with that violin!”
And this was posted a couple of days ago by Alessandro Quarta:
The moment that I would live another million times!
“Sanremo 2019” with “Il Volo” and the “Standing Ovation” of the Ariston Theater and of all those who love their music in the world, because it is “Musica che Resta” !!! ~ Alessandro Quarta ~
I end with this speech by Bartoletti, a great friend of our boys, here are his words:
“Look Mara, they knew perfectly well that going to Sanremo, they had to accept a regulation that included a televoting, which favored them, and two juries, admittedly against.
Yet they went the same, yet they smiled, before the verdict.
The jury of honor, placed them at the twenty-first place, is not a judgment, it is a form of artistic racism against IL VOLO, and they have always and only a smile !!”
Thanks Bartoletti, for your sincere affection for the guys !!
I really hope that the opinion of journalists and critics, has had a good shock, because it is unworthy of the behavior they had, towards Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca.
I do not know if there will be repentance from these people, but at least that for the future they have learned the lesson, because these guys are “great” in every sense and must be respected.
As for Alessandro Quarta, I sincerely hope that he can perform with IL VOLO in concert so that we can all enjoy this wonderful performance!
