Il Volo Off to the Races Again By Giovanna

The November stage of the 2020 Formula 1 Grand Prix had some special guests.  Il Volo was invited to sing the Italian National Anthem before the start of the Sunday, November 1 race to re-inaugurate the Ferrari Imola Course in Emilia-Romagna, which is hosting its first competition after years of renovation.   Down below, there’s link to Il Volo’s pre-race performance below for you to enjoy.

The Imola Course is only 25 miles east of Ignazio’s home in Bologna.  We all know that the Il Volo guys, especially Ignazio, have a love of fast machines in general, and Formula 1 racing in particular.  This was Ignazio during their 2019 summer off, at the Red Bull Formula 1 race car “stable,” and the Triscina Go-cart Track.  La Vela’s photo is just Igna being his usual self with children.

If you’re not familiar with Formula 1 racing, here’s the short story.  To quote my son Barry, “It’s the fastest cars in the world on the toughest, curviest tracks on earth.  It’s the best of the best.”  Spoken like an Italian.

If you didn’t know, the Ferrari course at Imola has not hosted Formula 1 racing for 14 years. The translated article below explains why.

The Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Racetrack hosted Formula 1 for the last time in 2006. In the same year, the reconstruction and modernization work began, which lasted throughout 2007. The pit area was completely rebuilt; the only surviving building is the historic and former Marlboro Tower (now sponsored by Aruba). The changes to the route, carried out under the direction of the architect Hermann Tilke, led to the elimination of the “Lower Variant” for cars. Over the years, work has been carried out to adapt the track to the increasingly high standards required to host international competitions. This led to obtaining the Grade 1 License necessary to host Formula 1.

Author’s note: Next is a translation of two articles and the lead photo that appeared in the Italian media this week announcing Il Volo’s appearance to sing the Italian national anthem (il Inno di Mameli).

IL VOLO OFF TO THE EMILIA ROMAGNA FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX TO PERFORM THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

The boys of Il Volo Chosen to Perform the National Anthem on the Occasion of the Emilia Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix Set for November 1.

The guys from Il Volo will sing the National Anthem before the Emirates Formula 1 Grand Prix in Emilia Romagna, a beautiful event two months after having excited the audience of the Verona Arena at the Seat Music Awards.  Music and sport, an essential combination which is often talked about together.  Power cars are undoubtedly an expertise of our country, and in particular the Formula 1 world championship represents an important opportunity to highlight the “Made in Italy” brand.

In this untypical sports season, Italy has been home to three (race) stages.  After the two already staged in Monza and Mugello, Formula 1 will be on November 1 in Imola on the historic racetrack dedicated to Enzo and Dino Ferrari.

To celebrate a return of the highest category of auto racing to Imola, the trio of Il Volo was chosen, specifically to emphasize the importance of “Made in Italy.”  A performance to the notes of the national anthem at the Dino Ferrari International Racetrack will get the television audience excited, before concentrating on the curves and straights of the racetrack on the banks of the Santerno.

Author’s note: A few years ago, when Piero cut off the long “cuiffo” (flipped up curl) that he used to wear on the front of his hair, he explained on Instagram, “I got rid of it because it felt like I was wearing the last turn of the racecourse at Mugello on my head.”  Does anybody remember this look?

By the way, the boys have performed at the Grand Prix before.  The Flight Crew covered their visit to a Grand Prix a few years ago, at the Etihad Airlines Track in Abu Dhabi in the Emirates, pictured here.

Is it obvious which two love cars, and which one loves clothes?

On with the articles!

IL VOLO GOES TO THE EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAN PREMIO (GRAND PRIX)

Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble have agreed with enthusiasm to participate in this prestigious event.  The three guys are long-time fans of Formula 1 and proud to represent Italy.

From the boys themselves:

“It is an honor for us to have been invited to the Grand Prix and to once again interpret the Mameli anthem (Italy’s national anthem). Every time we’ve had this opportunity, it was not easy to hide our emotions!  We thank the President of Formula Imola, Uberto Selvatico Estense, and wish a big ‘ in bocca al lupo’ to all the drivers.”

If you don’t know that expression, it’s literally “Into the wolf’s mouth” and is the Italian way of saying “Good luck.”

The President of Formula Imola, Uberto Selvatico Estense, continues.

“I am really pleased to publicly announce that Il Volo will perform the Mameli Anthem at the next Formula 1 Grand Prix in Imola on November 1, 2020.

This magnificent singing trio has characterized Italian music and culture throughout the world for some time.  So, who better than they could interpret the Italian anthem, thrilling the world-wide spectators of the most awaited Grand Prix of the season.

A special thanks, as well as to the artists, to their manager Michele Torpedine for the great willingness and enthusiasm in supporting the initiative that marks the return of Formula 1 to Imola after 14 years.  This is another opportunity to listen to the music of Il Volo, as we wait for the 2021 tour.

From the author:  Even the Italian car fanatics are proud of Il Volo.  This extra clip is excerpted from “FormulaPassion. It” web page:

The Trio Will Do the Pre-Show at the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna This Coming Sunday

Il Volo has been invited to open the Emiglia Romagna Grand Prix, which kicks off Sunday November 1 at the Enzo and Dino International Autodrome of Imola.   The trio will perform the opening ceremony interpreting Mameli’s anthem to pay homage to the drivers arrayed near the starting line.

Author: You can tell the Il Volo guys were excited about this.  Starting at 3:30 AM my cell phone Instagram kept lighting up with videos of the pits, crews, and tracks, by the Il Volo guys or whichever relatives were with them doing the filming.   I had videos of the pits and “stables” coming up on my phone at the same time as the ESPN professional filming of the same areas, and some of the ones from Il Volo were noisier and more exciting.  Here’s one to check out.

All the guys got into video selfie-ing in the pit areas.  Here’s one of Piero.

In the Italian media this week, Piero said that one reason Il Volo was proud to sing the national anthem was that so many Italian young (and old) people have been singing it together at twilight from their balconies and doorways as an act of unity during this epoch of isolation and social distancing.  Il Volo also sets an example by approaching every public appearance and gathering place masked, just like the announcers and race drivers today.

So here is the link to the pre-race announcement and Il Volo’s singing of the Inno di Mameli.

Although the anthem has five verses, they sang only the first verse and refrain, as is typical at sports events, so we didn’t get to hear them for very long.  Note that the guys did not do any rephrasing or very sophisticated harmonies, but presented the national anthem formally and traditionally, befitting its serious and very spiritual lyrics.  It was lovely nonetheless, and punctuated beautifully by the air force fighter jet flyover.

In the clip, the announcer explains that Il Volo will present the national anthem and there will be a flyover in honor of Enzo Ferrari. He adds after that the four aircraft are Eurofighters from the combat wing of Grosseto who are flying a circuit of the race course.  He describes the beautiful sunny day at this venue which has been key in writing the story of motorsport and which has seen some of its greatest racing competitions.  Then he argued that the naysayers who said we wouldn’t have this event this year, or next, were wrong, because we did it and it’s here.  His partner adds that the most exciting thing we could do for the drivers and for the 100th Formula 1 Grand Prix was to bring in Il Volo.  No argument there.

It was a very tense and exciting race.  Team Mercedes Benz has dominated Formula 1 for six or seven years.  On the Imola course, five or six drivers had serious mechanical issues and mandatory DNFs (Did Not Finish), for problems including (two) front wings shearing off, a coolant system failure, shredded tires, and even cold brakes in a pit stop that knocked a crew mechanic into a back somersault.  Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, managed to do a very close overtake (pass) splitting the two Mercedes leaders, got himself into second place, and held it a dozen laps, nearly guaranteeing a second place on the podium and nearly breaking up the expected Mercedes one-two finish.  Then he punctured a tire, and spun off the track with three broken rims and a wrecked chassis.

The Imola track, on the left, was once the site of two driver deaths in one weekend 1994, Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.  In memory or in caution, drivers from several teams had their helmets or steering columns blessed before the race.  Strangely, despite the multiple grindings and spin outs today, there was not a single injury.

Before the race, the entire field of drivers made pre-recorded statements and took a knee on the track to demand an end to racism.  Il Volo held their opening anthem until after these ceremonial acts of solidarity.  In a fitting conclusion, Lewis Hamilton, who piloted the winning Mercedes car, happens to be a person of color.

In the midst of all the excitement, Gianluca found the time to post a picture of him and Ernie, which was captioned “You’re the other half of me.”  Papa Ercole posted best wishes “Little Man.” Mamma Eleonora posted an old video of a little boy tossing his bicycle and running to her camera.  Why?  Yesterday, November 1, was Ernie Ginoble’s birthday.  Tanti auguri e Buon Compleanno, Ernie!

Author’s note: Il Volo is “off to the races again” in another way, too.  Embedded in one of the Italian news clippings last week was a link to Il Volo’s 2021 European tour schedule.  Stay tuned.  In another Flight Crew article, we’ll share whatever know about it.

TORPEDINE-RENIS, LET’S MAKE THE POINT! by Daniela

In these days we have all seen articles published concerning the definition in the first instance of the complaint for the dispute between RENIS-TORPEDINE and the subsequent declaration of Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca.

So let’s try to do a little order.

This article, published in Bologna on 30 September 2019, informed us that there was a dispute with a subsequent complaint by Tony Renis, against Michele Torpedine, for the management of Il Volo.

la Repubblica – Bologna Article 2019 – Click Here

I translate the article:

BOLOGNA – The dispute over the management of the earnings of ‘Il Volo’, the trio of singers who surprisingly won the Sanremo Festival in 2015, ends on trial and causes two big names in Italian music, once partners and also friends, to fight. The Prosecutor of Bologna has in fact sued the music producer Michele Torpedine, former manager of Zucchero and Lucio Dalla, among others, for mismanagement of earnings or wealth.

It all stems from a complaint filed four years ago by the lawyers Antonio Cappuccio and Tiziana Zambelli, defenders of Tony Renis, aka Elio Cesari, and who will now appear as a civil party “for due compensation for the damage.”

So, the complaint was made in 2015.

I read  also in another article of 2018 that Renis filed the complaint in September 2015, the year in which in February, Il Volo wins Sanremo and in May is at Eurovision.

The quarrel goes on in the Italian courts. Initially, archiving  is requested , because some documents from those years cannot be found, but Renis’ lawyers oppose and the controversy continues, until a couple of days ago, when the court issues the first instance sentence, which we all have read.

la Repubblica – Bologna Article 2020 – Click Here

I translate for you.

The dispute over the management of the earnings of ‘Il Volo’, the trio that won the Sanremo Festival in 2015, ends in the first degree, with a one-year sentence for the music producer Michele Torpedine, accused in Bologna for patrimonial infidelity.

The criminal case was born from a complaint presented by the defenders of Elio Cesari, aka Tony Renis: Torpedine was originally the director and Renis was a 50% shareholder of Rentor, the company that managed the trio exclusively. The investigations disputed a conflict of interest linked to a contract that in 2014 Torpedine entered into an exclusive agreement in favor of Family Srl, of which he was sole director. With this deed he would have caused Rentor damage equal to the loss of the exclusive rights and the compensation related to the trio’s activities.

The court also sentenced to civil compensation, ordered an executive provisional for Rentor, constituted a civil party with the liquidator Marzia Chessa, defense of the lawyer Gabriele Bordoni, of 50 thousand euros and 20 thousand for Renis, defended by the lawyers Antonio Cappuccio and Tiziana Zambelli, plus 10 thousand in court costs. Torpedine was defended by prof. Gaetano Insolera.

So, for the moment, a verdict has been issued that sentences Michele Torpedine to one year in prison and to pay 80,000 euros.

This quarrel has been going on since 2015 and 5 years have passed, and in all this time, Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio, have NEVER given their opinion, but at the publication of the verdict, Il Volo made this publication:

Michele, sometimes truth and justice need time. We know you well. You have been by our side for more than 10 years. You defended us from everyone, you fought for us, you taught us so much and above all you love us. You always made us understand who we should trust and who instead preferred to use us for their own interests and personal glory. We are proud to have chosen you and to have renewed our trust, for ten years, day after day. This is a truth that no sentence can hinder. For the rest, just have patience: in the end the truth always comes. In life and also in the courts.

Really beautiful words, which express all their solidarity and their affection for the one who has always followed them and who has not forgotten them in moments when notoriety was tarnishing, but, like a good father, has always kept them holding hands and indicated the way to follow.

Susan De Bartoli has published a beautiful writing, which many have already read and which summarizes what we all fans of Il Volo feel in our hearts.

Grazie mille Susan, for expressing so well in words the feelings of all of us! Here it is:

An Open Letter to Michele Torpedine:

These three families gave you their sons because they trusted you and believed in you! What you have done for these young men over the last 10 years has helped them to become the fine young men they are today! You always gave them the best advice and they trusted you and believed in you and that is why they are at your side today! You are proud of them as you should be because you helped make them who they are today!

On many occasions I have heard them praise you for all that you have done for them. They said you taught them everything they know but, above all you taught them to stand on their own two feet and to deal with everything that has been thrown at them over the years. You never left their side! You always defended them! You are a second father to them! And you went above and beyond to teach them everything you knew. You love them and they love you!

We believe in you and thank you for what you have done for Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca! I know you always acted in their best interest! I stand with you! The truth will prevail.

It is only at the first degree sentence, therefore Torpedine will certainly oppose.

But I wonder why the complaint was made in September 2015, after the excellent results of Sanremo and Eurovision and the upcoming concerts?

By the admission of Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca themselves, who returned from America, here in Italy and in Europe, they were not known.

They might have been a flop, and in that case they wouldn’t be interested in anyone anymore, but Torpedine has always believed in them, and therefore, with the new notoriety comes the fight.

It goes without saying that I’m on Torpedine’s side, and I think I also interpret the thoughts of all of you who love Il Volo.

The dispute will continue and we will read the various results, then the law will be able to put an end to this unpleasant situation.

IL VOLO WHAT FUN by Daniela

So many enthusiastic comments on the translation of a speech between one song and another from IL Volo, during the concert in Taormina, that I looked for another video where there was a speech to be translated and I found it.

Enjoy yourselves!

GIAN = (Ignazio speaks to Piero) Anyway, opening the parenthesis, Gianluca told me the “cassate” (silly, meaningless phrases) that you say ….
But do you realize? (many laughs)

GIAN = But I would never allow myself to say these things into the microphone.

IGNA = Saint Gianluca, who are you (referring to Gianluca), the fourteenth apostle?

PIERO = Could I please introduce the next piece?

GIAN = Maybe I’ll do it, also because you two will sing. I’ll be brief, I promise you.

IGNA = But why? Are you leaving?

GIAN = Yes.

IGNA = Ah, the Ave Maria is good for something! (applause and laughter)

GIAN = There are five thousand of you against me tonight, I’m the only one from Abruzzo, is there any Abruzzo here who gives me a hand? ….. Oh thank goodness!

IGNA = But we (meant the Sicilians) do not discriminate against anyone. It is I who discriminate against you.

GIAN = Indeed ….. but it’s not true, we love each other (and they shake their hands)

IGNA = Absolutely !! ❤

PIERO = (to Ignazio) But have you completely forgotten Italian tonight? (Ignazio speaks in Sicilian).

IGNA = I’m in Sicily (lots of laughter and applause) it takes a passport to come here. (Piero laughs a lot).
It is since I moved to Bologna that this thing hasn’t turned out (the dialect of Bologna is very different from Sicilian).

You live here, you go to the baker and say “Will you give me half a kilo of bread?” (Ignazio says the sentence in Sicilian and then repeats the same sentence in Bolognese, the sentence is the same, but the sound result is very different), it’s not the same thing !!!

GIAN = No, it’s not the same …

IGNA = But it’s still beautiful!

GIAN = Come on, am I the presenter?

IGNA = Go!

GIAN = Ladies and Gentlemen, Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto, will sing only for you: “O Paese d’o sole” (applause)

These guys are really funny, and I like Ignazio a lot when he speaks the Sicilian dialect.

Gianluca does well the part of being rejected by Ignazio, but it is really clear that they love each other.

And what about this spectacular duet between Ignazio and Piero, this is one of my favorite Neapolitan songs, every time I get goosebumps.

Fantastic trio. ❤️❤️❤️

PIERO, IGNAZIO AND GIANLUCA IN QUARANTINE by Daniela

As you all know, Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca quickly returned to Italy. But maybe not everyone, especially those who don’t have Facebook, knows where the guys are now.

The three, are scattered around Italy, one in the north, one in the center and one in the south.

Let’s start with Piero.

As we read from his words, Piero returned to Sicily, to his Naro, but did not return to the family. To preserve his health and the health of his loved ones, Piero has self-isolated himself in his apartment (which is close to that of his parents), and has no physical contact with them. He has self-declared (as is expected here) and is observing a quarantine, isolated from all.

Piero made a video call with his friend Mariano Di Vaio, whom the boys had met in Miami.

Here it is and I will roughly translate it for you.

First thing, we all notice, Piero’s new beard cut …… I don’t like it !!! 😑

Mariano also makes fun of Piero for doing this new shave and leaving his mustache like this, and laughing. Piero said he did it alone (of course). He was inspired by the Narcos telefilm, where there is a sheriff, and was inspired by him.

Piero says he’s been in quarantine for two days and already doesn’t know what to do. Mariano says he’s been four days and it feels like a month (he also has a wife and 3 children).

Piero shows that he also tried to cut his hair, with the result that he almost peeled one side. (disaster)

He says he saw a video of a fairly well-known singer in Miami, who was in the disco without worries. 😲

Piero

(Thank you Judy Thurman for this nice collage!)

Di Vaio, confirming that he spoke with friends in Miami when the alarm went up, but people still do not realize the big problem of C19.

To pass the time, Piero watches TV, then has tools to train with, takes virtual lessons with his personal trainer.

Piero says that he would have liked to stay at home with his parents and sister, however, he is alone and the policemen come every day to check that he is at home, in isolation, because having been away, he does not know if he may have contracted the virus, and therefore, rightly so.

But Piero, what did you do, right now that hair was starting to grow back!!

Quar 01

Climbing up, from the boot, we arrive in central Italy, Montepagano ….. Gianluca.

Gianluca was traveling, accompanied by his mother Eleonora. They returned home, but not to their parents’ house, but to Gianluca’s house, to be isolated from Ercole and Ernesto. Gianluca lives close to his parents, but they still couldn’t hug each other. They too are in isolation.

Gianluca provides us with many moments of his day and his beautiful home.

In this video, Gianluca says that in quarantine they are all becoming incredible chefs.
He too, who has never cooked in his life, made an amazing banana dessert.

Then Gian also practices playing the piano.

Bravo Gianluca !!

And he trains in his small gym.
Do not overdo it!

Quar 02

Instead, mother Eleonora sends us this photo of Ernesto beyond the railing of the window. On the photo it says: “Love at a distance, soon we will embrace each other again.”

Quar 03

We continue in the ascent of Italy, and we arrive in the north, in Bologna, where Ignazio is.

Ignazio returned to Bologna, where he has his apartment and where his sister Nina was, who was already waiting for him in solitary confinement.

The situation in Bologna is much more serious than in Sicily or Abruzzo.

Ignazio has a long phone call with his friend Fabio Ingrassia, which I translate briefly for you.

Immediately Fabio asks Ignazio if he has bought the new earring, and Ignazio affirms and shows it to him, then asks Ignazio, how is the first day of quarantine and Ignazio answers: Arturo, television and one meter from his sister Nina. Fabio tells him that in Marsala (where Fabio is) there are two new cases of C19.

Nina cooks, and Ignazio confirms that he is now vegan. He also shows a pizza that his sister made him on his arrival, heart-shaped and with vegan foods.

An exchange of ideas was born with Fabio who says that he eats real meat and Ignazio tells him that he is only a skeptic.

A message arrives from Gianluca, who is following their live, and  he says that in Abruzzo they will create vegan arrosticini (typical food made with meat) for Ignazio.

Quar 04

Fabio reports that friends in Miami have said that the C19 is spreading and both say that it was not taken seriously there.

While chatting, Ignazio comes to a contact with Red Ronnie, who asks him where he is and Ignazio confirms that he is in Bologna.

So they talk about the hospital in Marsala, to which Fabio made a donation and Ignazio also confirms that he will do it too and therefore communicates the data for the hospital.

They talk about Ignazio’s guitars that he brought to Bologna, and he admits that he is training.

Every now and then Ignazio has sweet tenderness with his beloved Arturo.

Then Ignazio and Fabio experiment with chords and songs simultaneously with their guitars.

Ignazio asks Arturo what song he wants to hear ….

Arturo stretched over Ignazio and he says to him: “Do you want to rest a bit? I am dad, not a sofa!”

Quar 05

So the first quarantine days of IL VOLO have passed, but there are many days to pass, but the important thing is that they are safe.

Here in Italy, the situation has worsened and I think the boys were shocked on their return.

But even this period will pass.

I also recommend to you, American friends, stay safe!

SUMMARY OF CHRISTMAS EVENTS by Daniela

Since the last time I wrote a post, it’s amazing how many things our guys have done, but let’s try to retrace all their commitments.

Milan was also embellished with beautiful IL VOLO posters.

Summary 01

On December 17, Il Volo takes part in the presentation in Bologna of the new book by dear friend Bartoletti: ALMANACCO DI SANREMO. The boys were kind and affable to everyone.

Summary 02

At the end of the evening, Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca recorded a video message dedicated to Sinisa Miajlovich (coach of the Bologna football team, currently suffering from leukemia). Here are some of the beautiful words written by Bartoletti.

“When the presentation of a book ends with Il Volo that stands up to go to dedicate ‘Grande Amore’ to Arianna Miajlovich sitting in the front row (then asking her cell phone to send a private encouragement video to Sinisa) there would already be very little to be added. Yet before, there had been … everything else. Between participation, joy and even a little emotion. With the acquired certainty that the A of Almanac is the same as A of Friendship (Amicizia ): and also the A of Love (Amore).

Difficult to find the words to thank Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero who came on PURPOSE to give us their affection.”

Summary 03

Piero, Gianluca and Ignazio, have also been to visit an exhibition in Bologna, dedicated to Italian music “NOI, NON ERAVAMO SOLO CANZONETTE”.

Summary 04

Il Volo in front of the photo of Modugno while singing “Volare”.

Summary 05

Il Volo in front of the photo of Dalla, author of “Caruso”.

Then, Il Volo announces a surprise for all the fans, a free and live mini concert, which will be held on 20 December outdoors, in front of the Milan train station.

Unfortunately on December 20 there is a horrible weather, it rains a lot and there is cold wind, but as promised, the boys do the mini live as announced.

Summary 07

We must make a big and warm applause to the guys who performed despite the impossible weather, but also to the fans who attended, despite the cold, wind and tremendous rain.

22 December

On RAI1 there is a television program I SOLITI IGNOTI, which is done for charity purposes,TELETHON. During the broadcast there will be many guests, including IL Volo, the aim is to guess who the people are, through clues. In the end, Il Volo knows exactly how to guess and the result of the evening of the game and the phone calls from home will go to charity.

The program was a lot of fun, the boys also sang two songs. Many laughs. Here is a  video of the whole evening.

If you have a problem hearing the audio part of “Grande Amore”  a link below will take you directly to the Sicilian Facebook Fan Page. You should be able to hear it there. 😊

Summary 08

From Mexico, images of NAVIDAD ATZECA arrive, where Il Volo sings “O HOLY NIGHT”, recorded during their last visit to Mexico.

What a sweet and beautiful song, Christmas is coming !! ❤️

Summary 10

During the Christmas holidays, Piero went to Cortina for a holiday in the snow, together with friends.

A nice piano arrived at Gianluca’s house and, in a short time, Gian cheered us up with this nice video, where he sings and PLAYS his new piano, good Gianluca!!

Instead on New Year’s Eve, a short video published by Red Ronnie made us discover Ignazio playing the guitar during a song with friends.

And on the first day of the new year, this beautiful video was released. It was done with the aim of sensitizing young people to turn the radio volume down or off while parking, because loud music could divert attention from the maneuver.

Very nice guys, who lent themselves to this video !!

Summary 13

In short, a very busy period for Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, but it did not end here, on January 3, they will be guests on RAI1 in the LA PORTA DEI SOGNI program, also they should be guests of PORTA A PORTA with Bruno Vespa.

I can’t wait to see them again at Porta a Porta !!
