And so, after a rainy start, which forced IL VOLO to postpone the concert date in Opatija (Croatia) for the third time (the other two for Covid), the concert finally took place and it was a great success.

But let’s start in order.

Day 4 July, incessant rain and the open air concert, must be postponed.

But on the evening of July 5th, there were no problems. It was all very nice.

Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, beautiful, rested, elegant and as always very good.

The songs performed are part of the 10 Year Tour, so there is nothing of Morricone.

The audience of the Abbazia Summer Scene had the opportunity to finally attend the long-awaited concert of the Volo, the Italian trio famous for modern arrangements of famous Italian opera songs and the interpretation of hits tonight, Monday 5 July, pop in a classic key. Postponed three times due to anti-epidemic restrictions and unfavorable weather conditions, the event was held at the Opatija open theater, achieving great success with the public.

For Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto, it was the third live performance in front of a Croatian audience and, judging by the standing ovations that echoed in the summer scene, it will certainly not be the last. The two tenors and a baritone, with over two million records sold, 220 million streaming on digital platforms, as well as more than 500 million views and 1.5 million subscribers on the official YouTube channel, presented the songs to the public of Abbazia with which they achieved world fame, merged into the collection “The Best Of: 10 Years”, published in 2019. The disc collects about twenty of the most significant songs interpreted by the trio, from the famous compositions of Italian opera (such as “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”, contained in Giuseppe Verdi’s Traviata) to the greatest hits of popular music (including “Arrivederci Roma” by Renato Rascel and “Caruso” by Lucio Dalla), not forgetting international hits (such as “Be My Love” by Italian-American singer Mario Lanza).

With a vision of pop stars and divine voices, baritone Gianluca Ginoble and tenors Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone captivated the audience in Plovdiv. The long-awaited concert, postponed for a year due to the pandemic and the closing of the music stages, filled the stands of the Ancient Theater and raised the music lovers to their feet with the second song from the repertoire of the eternal classics.

The Italian trio “Il Volo” came to Bulgaria to celebrate their 10th anniversary on stage and made sure that even without a cake and candles the audience under the hills felt special. Maybe because of the fact that they were here for the third time, but only now they had the opportunity to appear on the stage of the Ancient Theater – the place where their art really sounds magical.

The visit of the trio was part of their world tour, but it will certainly remain in their hearts as one of the warmest and most exciting experiences.

The program of the three performers was more than influential and recognizable – “Nessun Dorma” by Puccini’s “Turandot”, the eternal “Un Amore Così Grande” and “O Sole Mio”, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” by Verdi’s “La Traviata”, “Grande Amore” – the song with which the boys won the audience of Eurovision in 2015 and she awarded them first place. They sang the song on encore. The boys bowed to the audience and took on their next challenge, promising to return with their new music program with lots of film music that would touch the hearts of their fans.

Another great success, but time is very short, IL VOLO is expected in Romania, so the next day, immediately departures for Bucharest, Romania.

In Romania, they will perform in the beautiful Arenele Romane open-air theater, built in 1906 according to the Roman model.

Il Volo is highly anticipated in Romania, because it is the first concert they have performed in this country.

The weather is excellent, so it promises to be a beautiful evening.

A few days ago we received the news of the success of the Verona Arena, we hugged, we with our team, because it is not just the three of us, the three of us go on stage, but behind us there is the management and I have to tell you that the mentor of IL Volo is Michele Torpedine, because it is he who stimulates us to create new ideas.

When we go on stage and we get a great success, I was telling you about the success of a few days ago, we hugged each other and we said:

PV = Why were there?

IGNAZIO = When we were little it was normal, then we also have three different characters, we also have three very strong personalities the three of us, so it’s normal that we went against our ideas.

PV = (to Torpedine) How difficult was it to keep three young men with strong personalities together, who evidently manage to find a common agreement on stage?

TORPEDINE = It was much more difficult at first, because they were children, they even fought over the place in the car. 😁

Today they are three adult and intelligent people, but the nice thing about Il Volo, unlike other artists, is that although today they cover most of the world (they are famous in most of the world), they are very simple people.

PV = Where will Il Volo arrive? (where their success will come? how far will they go?)

TORPEDINE= I have been telling them for some time that the best is yet to come. When they will have the credibility of mature people, and prove that their voices are crazy, I always tell them that big success is yet to come.

But it will come, because there is no such thing in the world. (Meaning the guys of IL VOLO are the only ones who present such a repertoire and with these qualities in the world.)

PV = (voice) In the journey of these three guys, there was also a very nice parenthesis that I want to remember, because the first international audience they had was in Ischia, in 2010 during the Ischia Global Film Music Festival. The three came, very young, I must say very jaunty, with their families, very carefree, but they were already concentrated there, in the recording room, they were making the album, with great commitment and they did a concert in Sant Angelo Ischia, in front of a Hollywood audience, Jeremy Renner, Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Ethel Graham and many other international actors.

We are very proud of what we are doing, because it is all that the sacrifices are repaying us, the satisfactions.

We are really satisfied, change is normal, but we try to keep our origins, our traditions, our values, which are the most important thing, things that we have always tried not to lose along the way.

PV = Piero you are three very young exes (former children), who have made it, and you are still there, determined to grow more and more.

Instead, let’s talk to many young Italians, who are still there fighting for the first satisfaction of their life, what do we say to them?

PIERO = Our work is a dreamy job, we always think big, sometimes we succeed, sometimes we fail and that fear is the stimulus that makes you grow, it always keeps you going.

As for our peers, I do not feel able to give advice, but the only suggestion I could give is to believe in your talent, but above all in your passion, which sooner or later, life will give you that satisfaction.

PV = Gianluca, when you go back to Abruzzo, and go around the streets where you took your first steps, not only artistic, but also in school, what is your feeling today?

GIAN = We were just talking about it the other day. Each of us lives it differently, but there is a strong gap between living the life of the country, because in any case I have not moved from Abruzzo, I live by the sea, and then, go around the world.

It is as if we lived two lives side by side, as if every now and then, we jump from one train to another, as if they were two tracks, right?

But we must try to maintain that normality that allows you not to lose the detachment with reality, because in any case, even if this is our life, we have adapted to change. It is a great privilege, somehow, to be able to live a life as a simple, normal boy, and then you have this privilege of living a life of a star, let’s say.

PV= Sure

GIAN= We must know how to cultivate both things, know how to manage them, and never lose that humility, that simplicity.

PV= Ignazio, being Italian is a great privilege, let’s face it.

Let’s tell a little to the many young people who do not have the awareness of the world, that Italianness is a very important value.

IGNAZIO = Being Italian is a great honor for us because, only by hearing about it from various nationalities, you realize how our country is loved, respected, envied. Because we, in the end, have fantastic places, among the most beautiful in the world, people … that are the most beautiful in the world, because here you can find your dimension, with more reserved people (north) or with more people lively, like in the south, right?

So we live in a fantastic country and we just have to be proud of our flag. 😘

PV = (to Gian) But when you are on stage in Los Angeles, rather than South America, or China, or Russia and you start to see the Italian flags that come out, what’s the feeling, I get the chills just thinking such a thing.

GIAN= It is our culture, above all musical, that allows us to travel the world, you know it better than us, in short.
It is the strength of this music, which allows us to conquer not only Italians abroad, but also audiences from all nations, and this is a great thing.

See the Italians who follow us, who by the way we greet, who are watching us in many …..

MARA = This is a beautiful moment of the Sanremo festival, but you, on Saturday 5th June, on RAI 1, will make a tribute to the great Ennio Morricone from the wonderful Arena of Verona, right guys?

GIAN = Yes Mara, we are here to celebrate the one who was the representation of absolute genius. From silence he could create works of art that made many generations fall in love. The maestro certainly does not need any introduction, but we humbly want to make this contribution to bring his music to the new generations of the youngest and therefore, for us it is first of all a great honor and also a great responsibility, because singing the columns sound of the great maestro Morricone, it is not easy, but it is something in which we will put “heart and soul”.

MARA = It is right what you said, you reach your audience who are young but you also have people from other generations, because your talent is immense, you are demonstrating it in recent years, taking Italy around the world . But you are also three guys, and I believe that with great emotion, as you said, you re-propose the music of the great Ennio Morricone, of the great films, which will remain in the history of cinema, wonderful soundtracks. I really think the emotion starts with you three.

Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca, then a very strong emotion for you who are very young to bring the music, the compositions of the great Morricone.

PIERO = Mara, celebrating Maestro Morricone, for us, is a great honor but equally a great responsibility. From this idea a recording project was born and we would like to say that we are really anxious and excited for next Saturday evening, 5 June, because it will be our first live concert live on RAI 1. But the thing that reassures us is the support of Ennio Morricone’s family, because on stage with us there will be his son Andrea Morricone to direct the orchestra and many other guests.

But the biggest guest will be the audience, because we will finally do a concert with the audience here at the Verona Arena and finally it will be a thrill to see our audience again (applause).

MARA = Here an applause started from the few present, as you know we are always few here (due to Covid), but an applause started from the whole group, from the whole team, precisely because you somehow represent all your colleagues (singers), that is, there is a restart, we start again, we have a desire to hear singing live and I think you have a crazy desire to perform. How much have you missed all of this in this long period?
Ignazio you answer me, love of aunt (Mara is usually called aunt), how are you?

IGNAZIO = I’m fine, I’m fine.

This afternoon we start rehearsals, and we can’t wait, because it’s been months, a year, a year and a half that we haven’t performed in front of an audience and surely starting from the Arena is something that makes us even happier, because like we know, the Arena is one of those places where every Italian artist aspires to perform and make our first and only concert of this year right here, with the reopening of the public, a positive message, a message of hope for all artists. For all the famous artists and for all the artists who want to resume playing, it is a message of hope that soon we will all be back again to perform in front of an audience and this will be in the near future.

MARA = Ignazio, this is a question I ask all three, how have you spent these long months?

IGNAZIO = At home with the mask, I also slept, with the mask at one point, I was so fond of the mask that I slept with it too.

GIAN = Mara, certainly for us, for all of us it was a difficult moment and we must have a spirit of adaptation in these cases, because when life, unfortunately, puts us to the test, it is in that moment that we must try not to live the passive life. For example, I learned to play the piano, I didn’t know how to play it, I started reading more, which I didn’t do before, but the important thing is to improve yourself, have a personal growth that allows you to be a better person.

MARA = Now I want to send a video, because I asked you how much you missed the live performance, but the public has never stopped following you, and in this video, I want to show these three guys, within 10 years, what they managed to do. We see it together and then I want to hear a comment from you.

So, various moments, what do you remember? I imagine the emotion with Pope Francis, but also with Barbra Streisand. What do you remember, come on, tell me something, some anecdotes.

IGNAZIO = We remember everything. I remember that the first time we sang with Barbra Streisand was on my birthday, October 4th two thousand and …… help me (he says to Piero and Gian).

GIAN = 2012, remember everything I see !!

IGNAZIO = I don’t just remember the year, it’s not like I can remember everything !!

MARA = And how did you feel Ignazio, how were you?

IGNAZIO = I was fine, the pressure was fine !! ( Ignazio, the usual joker).😁

MARA = But you had Barbra Streisand close …

PIERO = Mara, the thing that worries me most on Saturday night, will be the conduct and presentation of the program of the three of us, but above all, that of Ignazio (laughter)😁

GIAN = Let’s say that little by little you realize that what was initially a game becomes your life, but the memory of when I was a child must remain, because it is what gives you the strength to be truly yourself, without success you change, in fact it doesn’t have to be that something that changes you, and if you can keep the enthusiasm of the child, it makes a difference and people notice it, when you are on stage, when you talk to someone, this is the most important thing, never lose that authenticity, which somehow makes you unique.

It is a way to always be yourself.

Man = It’s an important thing, because, as you say, the audience feels it. There are some questions, someone writes to ask Gianluca how he can bear all the tension in cheering on Roma (football team).

GIAN = Look, I have to be honest, since Totti (captain of the team) left, I am no longer able to follow Roma as before.

In 10 YEARS The Best Of, there are 19 tracks that you have selected, what were the criteria that made you decide to include these tracks, and, now, there were some tracks that were not chosen and that you regretted not to have inserted in the CD?

GIAN = We have chosen very carefully, what is our repertoire, it was not so difficult to choose the most famous songs in Italy and abroad, such as “Caruso” or an aria like “Nessun Dorma”, even unreleased songs such as “Grande Amore”. It contains our whole story, from “O Sole Mio”, which was our first single, when we were 14/15 years old, up to “Grande Amore” or “Musica Che Resta”. It is a choice of songs that represents us, I would say that it is our presentation, the identity card, even for those who do not know us, this is Il Volo.

B = You are the perfect evolution of what the Italian opera singers who preceded you were: Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, a sort of 3.0 version, pop lyric, which is a little bit what happened to pop music that has winked, to the world INDIE, to then merge together and obtain excellent results.

What do you think of INDIE music? Is there anything you particularly like? Have you ever thought about a further indie-lyric evolution?

IGNAZIO = Indian is good!

PIERO = We are trying to follow the path, the message, that Pavarotti tried to do in the past with the famous “Pavarotti and friends”, to bring the belcanto out of the theaters, and to the general public.

Andrea Bocelli has been doing it for many years. We are three young 24/25 year olds who do something different, we can say UNIQUE, we try to bring this musical genre, which is part of our culture and tradition, to our peers, there are those who do not know it, they may like it or not, however, in our opinion, everyone must know what was born in our country and not.

IGNAZIO = Regardless of whether you like it or not.

PIERO = Absolutely.

We respect all genres of music. As for the INDIE, we listen to all genres of music, respect them and try to learn a little from everyone.

The last crazy thing, in chronological order, you have done is the exhibition in Panama in front of the Pope, on the occasion of World Youth Day, January 26.

B = Let’s talk about the tour, after you returned from Brazil, where you performed in front of tens of thousands of people, you are ready, already in 2020, to restart with the North American Tour and you will perform in 11 countries, in places such as RCMH in New York, do you have something different in mind or some surprises to celebrate these 10 years in all these places?

GIAN = Surely we will strive not to repeat ourselves with our shows, and always do something new, it is clear, the repertoire is that, we certainly add some more songs, as we did in the DVD, adding classics, we also sing individually, everyone has the his space, we also sing in duet.

Maybe there will be some guests, as we had Alessandro Quarta guest on our tour this year, a great rock violinist, very strong.

We are working on this, even with the artistic or stage production, to enrich the show a little with many things.

B = During all these years, you have seen and visited many cities, thanks to your European and world dates. Many Italian artists have decided to move abroad, or to live there for several months a year. Is there a city that has aroused this feeling in you, or the love for your country is too much, so, will you want to stay here and have not thought about this thing?

PIERO = It is difficult to choose a city outside of Italy. I could say San Francisco, but after a couple of months, I would definitely want to return.

IGNAZIO = It is difficult, I would never think of going to live outside Italy, I would like it as an idea, ……but I am more and more convinced, that…. I live in Bologna and I love Bologna, today I came to Milan by car and thank you, that I live in Bologna because it is a city where you can move, without taking 40 minutes to cross the city.

GIAN = During the recordings of the first album, also of the second, we can say that we spent two years in Los Angeles, we lived for months in Los Angeles, and going back there wouldn’t be bad, or living in New York for a few months ….

IGNAZIO = You go there, then we meet.
