TUTTI A SCUOLA by Daniela

Ok, I just attended the performance of Il Volo in the program broadcast by RAI 1 of TUTTI A SCUOLA and I’m still on a cloud.

Thanks guys, it’s been so long that I haven’t heard that beautiful song from your voices anymore and I’m still excited ………. but let’s go in order.

This program is broadcast every year on the day of the opening of the schools, and is broadcast by RAI1.

Today, 14 September 2020, in Italy is the first day of school and this year is a very special opening, because the schools have been closed since early March.

So the message is really strong, it reopens, a thought to the future, with many problems in the present, still not fully overcome, but with a lot of confidence and emotion.

Furthermore, instead of making this connection from Rome, as every year, this year in compliance with the anti-Covid rules, the program is broadcast in Vo’ Euganeo, one of the countries most affected by the virus, a country that has a sad record in the number of deaths.

Many guests will participate in the event, in the presence of our President of the Republic: Sergio Mattarella and other constitutional offices.

Il Volo is the most awaited guest, who will conclude the event, before the speech of our President.

But here they are, always beautiful, elegant but with sneakers, IL VOLO.

Tutti a Scuola Performance – Click Here

Beautiful opening of their performance with the beautiful GRANDE AMORE, which we always listen with pleasure.

I translate for you the speech after Grande Amore.

Man = Good, good, good, very good!

Women = Mamma mia, what a thrill.

G + I + P = Thank you, thank you all.

Man = And then, finally seeing you again on stage, being able to listen to you and admire and enjoy your talent, after very complicated months.

We talked to each other on the computer, via Skype during Eurovision (this year he presented Eurovision Italia) and we had said to ourselves: sooner or later it will start again…..

Piero = Today is a special day, a day of hope. We are delighted to be present at this fantastic event and we send a big hug to all the kids who are back at school today. Study is the most important thing.

Man = Perfect! Guys, by the way, what kind of relationship did you have with school?

Ignazio = It’s really exciting to be here after the lockdown …..

Man = Ah, you avoid the question??

Ignazio = No, why did you understand?? (laughter)

Seriously, we are happy to be here.

Before, a very painful point was touched (bullying) that I experienced too, so I understand and I am very close…….

Man = Are you talking about difficulties at school?

Ignazio = No, I’m talking about cyberbullying in general.

Social media is a serious thing, we often use them, just to play, to have fun, but they are a very serious thing. Social networks give everyone a voice, but not everyone has the intelligence to know how to use them in the right way.

So we are very close to all the guys who need support, we are helping a lot of people, and we are also creating a Foundation for that.

Woman = Beautiful.

Ignazio = Yes, because in 2020 we are far ahead, but also far behind in the way we behave.

Woman = We hope that the school also does a good job, teaching these kids to use social media well.

Man = The real revolution starts from school, education. A teacher, a pupil, a notebook, a pen, and you can begin, not only to dream, but to change the world.

Thanks guys for the introduction to this beautiful speech, which has not been prepared, I am truly amazed.

Ignazio = You were talking about this speech before and it is something that touches us a lot.

Gianluca = Also because, dedicating ourselves to culture, to study, not only makes us educated people, it also helps us to look at the world with other eyes, to the point of making us better people, with a pinch of empathy, of sensitivity, this can happen. So we renew our “good luck” to all students and also to children.

Man = “Better and free people,” said Gianni Rodari (Italian writer). “Study if you want to be free.”

But you have a gift, a little for us, but above all for our extraordinary President.

You explain it yourself.

Piero = Today we have decided to pay homage to the Italian column of music in the world, the maestro Ennio Morricone. (applause)

Man = About the music of “Once Upon a Time in America” and “Malena”, right?

Piero = Exactly, a piece entitled E PIÙ TI PENSO.

Man = Great names like Renis, Mogol participated in this song. And you sing.

Gianluca = We always remember this song with great affection, because we were just over 15 years old, when we had the honor of singing and performing with the great maestro Ennio Morricone.

Man = You speak like a 90-year-old….. and you already have a 10-year career ….. you started at 8 …. (laughter), you are still very young: Il Volo !!

Il Volo sings E PIÙ TI PENSO.

Man = I’m speechless, really, and then live, from a few meters …

Gianluca =  Really Thanks, we also want to thank the maestro Leonardo De Amicis (he directed the guys at Ti Lascio Una Canzone) and all the musicians of the orchestra, who are all boys, just like us. Thank you.

Man = Anyway you joke, but talent, only by studying, studying, can reach certain levels. Thanks, good job and good flight, infinite flight.

I + P + G = Thank you

Man = Hurray for Il Volo, who greets our President, I recommend you distance and mask.

Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca go down to greet the President, wearing the mask first.

The guys get a personal applause from our President, standing in front of them.

Great guys!!

But let me spend a few words on the superb interpretation they gave of E PIÙ TI PENSO!

How long have we not heard this song sung by Il Volo.

I would like to clarify that Tony Renis wrote the words on this beautiful music by Maestro Morricone, with the aim that it would be sung by Il Volo, then almost unknown kids in Italy.

Since then it has only been sung a few times by them.

On this occasion, they surpassed themselves, with an interpretation full of emotion, a unique sweetness and harmony, which only Gianluca, Ignazio and Piero can produce.

As the presenter said, talent yes, but also a lot of study to achieve this.

Again, I am very proud of them.

After the performance of Il Volo, there was the speech of our President of the Republic. A very long speech but with very beautiful pieces that I translate for you.

“Today is an important day. The inauguration of the school year, never, as on this occasion, has the value and significance of a restart, for the whole of society.

The children feel it, the adults understand it, and also the institutions. We are facing a decisive challenge. Starting over from Vo’ Euganeo gives even more the sense of how this challenge affects the whole country. Just as here in Vo’, after the anguish and closures, life has resumed at full speed, so the reopening of the schools expresses the full recovery of the life of Italy.”……

“As we prepare for tomorrow, we feel the need to remember those affected by the disease, the many broken lives, and the pain suffered by many. We will not forget, and we will try to learn from the exceptional and dramatic events that have affected all continents and that still keep us busy, requiring responsibility and prudence.”…….

“The precautionary measures have become a test that the Italian people have been able to face, as in other difficult moments in its history.

The school also serves this purpose, to train aware citizens, to defeat ignorance with knowledge, to curb fears with culture, to share responsibilities.

The school, the culture, the continuous confrontation, are also antidotes to the virus of violence and intolerance, which can also infect the community, if attention is reduced.”…..

Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy

Beautiful words from our President, but also the words spoken by our boys, unprepared speeches, which make me even more proud of them, are beautiful and appropriate.

Ignazio said they are preparing a Foundation to help the children.

What wonderful people.

I love them.

Let’s watch the video of E PIÙ TI PENSO, sung years ago by three little friends, emerging artists: Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca: IL VOLO. ❤️❤️❤️

WHEN TALENT HAS NO BOUNDARIES by SUSAN

Let me say, Gianluca was the one who inspired me to write this article. Gianluca said, “I thought there were three hundred thousand boys singing like me, and instead that night I discovered that there are only two: Ignazio and Piero.” Of course, Gianluca was referring to the night they sang together for the first time on Ti Lascio Una Canzone.

What Gianluca realized in that moment was the uniqueness of the group. So, let’s begin where it all began….

It is the fourth episode of Ti Lascio Una Canzone and the boys are given the music for “O Sole Mio” but in three parts. They thought it was strange because until then they were singing alone or doing duets.

They walked out on the stage, sang “O Sole Mio” and it was like they had been performing together for years. Flawless!

Talent 01

We often talk about Ti Lascio Una Canzone where the boys first came together but, we never talked about some of their performances or what was going on behind the scenes without them knowing it.

Let’s talk about some of the people they performed with on the show. Really great names in the Italian music industry. Massimo Ranieri, Fausto Leali, Al Bano, Adamo, Piero Mazzoccheti.

What did I witness during their performances? I saw great performers in awe of three teenagers who were singing their songs and they were amazed at the performances. It was written all over their faces. They could not believe what they were hearing.

What was going on behind the scenes? Well we certainly know that the idea to put the three together was the genius of Roberto Cenci the artistic director and director of the program. But there was so much more happening!

Alone in his apartment, Michele Torpedine was sitting on his sofa with the volume off on his TV. The show he was watching was Ti Lascio Una Canzone. He keeps looking at the screen and he suddenly thinks, Ignazio reminds him of Luciano Pavaroti, Gianluca seemed similar to Jose Carreras and Piero is similar to Placido Domingo. He still had not heard them sing. Out of curiosity, he raised the volume and Michele says, “Here I am aware of another element, that is even more important than the first. The three casually put together to sing a song of the program possess an incredible vocality for their age.”

At this point Michele’s head is spinning. He’s thinking these guys are good and again repeats it to himself, they’re good! He thinks, “What if I try to put them together seriously? A trio he tells himself. Here’s what I could do…. “

Michele says, “The next day I am a volcano. I want to talk to everyone: producers, managers, families.”

Talent 02

Michele called Roberto Cenci and he got the contact details of the three boys.

Michele says, “Another great story started, a new story at a time when it seemed to me that there was no future for me, for my profession: a breath of oxygen in my environment.”

After years of disappointment, loss of trust and gratitude, missing or denied, with Ignazio, Piero and Gianluca, Michele rediscovers the values of gratitude. Michele says, “the boys allowed me to really go back to my job.”

So where to begin? Michele says, “Let’s start with trust because they trust me first of all; the administration of an entire world tour, with important figures to move on which I could take what I want if I were dishonest. But they trusted me and so did their parents, to whom, moreover, I have committed myself to teaching everything, the mechanisms, the things that move, the figures, the relationships. All.”

They were the first Italian artists in history to sign a contract with a major American music label. Universal Music signed them immediately. Michele said, “it is important to give due recognition to the man who made all this possible, the great record manager Peter Lopez. Peter immediately sensed the enormous potential of our artistic project. To him we owe an incredible international contract signed simply trusting that the boys would have audiences all over the world.”

But what did they bring to the table to win over the kids, the parents, and the grandparents? They had an idea and it worked.

Their music was Operatic pop or Pop-Opera. What was this new movement? It’s singing Opera in a more modern style. While opera is very strict and regimented, Pop-Opera is more ethereal it has a lighter feeling and it moves freely. It takes away the hard edges of opera and replaces it with a more ethereal feel while still presenting the drama and the high notes of the opera.

This along with the classical Neapolitan songs became a big draw. Why did it work? One reason is three amazing voices! If the voice wasn’t there, the song wasn’t going to sell.

Talent 04

When I’m writing these pieces, I do a lot of research and I watch a lot of videos. And this is what I found. I looked at videos of the promos the boys did, for their albums. They were 16 – 17 years old and I found many teenagers at these promos. I saw teenage girls and boys singing opera and Italian songs. They liked it because the music is easy and catchy and, they picked it up very easily. And I might add, the guys are very attractive and likeable. The young girls love them not because they are very handsome but because they can relate to them. They were 16 – 17 years old and they were telling these young kids we love this music and you can too. And they did and still do! Once the kids were sold the parents followed.

Who wouldn’t want their kids singing this music? In turn the parents found it just as pleasing. As to the grandmothers they were the ones who were fainting over these attractive young men.

But it wasn’t all as easy as that. There were some rough edges, some adjustments that needed to be made. The voices were certainly there but bringing it all together was another matter.

Let’s look back a moment at some of the people I just spoke about. Michele Torpedine, Roberto Cenci, and Peter Lopez. These are the top of the top. Under normal circumstances these boys wouldn’t be able to get in the front door, no less to meet these people. What would you call it? I call it La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny). They certainly were in the right place at the right time. I often wonder how it is possible that these three boys, with three unique voices, all appear at the same time and in the same place in history. WOW! What a plan God had! It can be nothing less!

So, what happened next? So, let’s let the boys tell you….

Talent 05

Piero said, On June 9 th, 2009, nine days after the end of Ti Lascio Una Canzone, my parents left for Rome. They were a bit mysterious about it. When I asked them what they were going to do in Rome, they only replied that they had to meet a person and, I tell the truth, I did not even insist on knowing who…. The next day they come home and then, yes, I wanted to know something more. “Dad, what have you done in Rome?”

“Nothing,” he answers, “we met a certain Torpedine.”

Yes, On June 9th, 2009 all the parents met with Michele to discuss the future of the boys.

Piero said, “After a month, my parents made another trip to Rome to meet the legendary Torpedine …. The day after, Mom and Dad came back to Naro with a check. It was the advance of the contract.”

Ignazio said, “Immediately after the end of the program my parents, like those of Piero and Gianluca received a call from the office of Bibi Ballandi.”

Who is Bibi Ballandi? …. He is the producer with a capital P. Some examples? The shows on Rai Uno de Fiorello and Celentano, Dancing with the Stars and also  Ti Lascio una Canzone.

From Ballandi’s office, they wanted the parents of the three boys to go to Rome to discuss their children’s future…. On their return from Rome, as usual, Mom and Dad sat down with me and my sister around the table to talk about what had happened in Rome. Michele Torpedine ….  was interested in us. What did I think? What could I think, one who in the last five years had done nothing but sing from morning to night? After several meetings we signed our first managerial contract.”

Gianluca said, “That is a period that I really cannot remember in general. I was just a child who dreamed. While the other guys who had participated in the Ti Lascio Una Canzone returned home … the three of us walked towards a professional artistic career.

…. I did not even know what the contracts were like, I did not care. Once I told my father something like this: ‘But why, to be a singer, it takes a contract?’ I only remember that at a certain point we went to lunch in Rome to talk about music and recording songs. The contract had already been signed. I was there with my father, Piero, Ignazio and their parents.

What I do remember is, we were three funny and awkward children: Ignazio fat, Piero roly-poly too, I was small and plump and with pimples. So, at the first meeting, I look at Torpedine and ask him: “But what came into your mind?”

Talent 06

In 2009 they recorded their first album.

Ron Fair, chairman of Geffens Records had this to say about their debut album, “Their debut album went Platinum, in Italy, without a single release, solely based on their performances in three TV Shows. This has never happened before.”

Today, Michele sums it up like this. “These three guys have very clear ideas and I have never seen them impressed in front of audiences that many would shake their legs. I never heard a wrong attack, and if some inconsistency arose that made something happen professionally, they knew how to handle the problem at the origin. They are always extraordinary, their voices grow with them, they mature in body and soul. There is no other team or artistic team so complete.”

L to R – Tony Renis, Gianluca, Piero, Jimmy Lovine, Ron Fair, Ignazio, Steve Leber
Watching the video of the guys coming into the airport in Malta made me think of what Ron Fair, the executive producer of Il Volo Takes Flight, said back in 2011 about their future:  “when we come to the part where we have the screaming girls and then, you know, women fainting….I think so, but in the meantime we will make a lot of great music.”  His prediction has come true, maybe even more than he expected.  We have seen it over and over…the adulation of the crowds of fans wherever they go….from such humble beginnings to this level of fan adoration.
But back to Mr. Renis.  When he discovered them while flipping through the channels, he was amazed at what he was hearing.  He called Michele Torpedine and said that he had found something extraordinary and wondered if he would do a great project with him.  Of course, he did.  He said, “everything started on these late nights in front of the TV where Tony Renis and I realized that this was another important moment for music.”  And so it began, and now we have come to the moment that Mr. Fair said would come.
Tony Renis and the Guy's (Babies).
Tony Renis and the Guy’s (Babies). Don’t know what the heck that orange art thing is.
How do celebrities manage it?  Can they receive this outpouring of adoration wherever they go without its having a significant effect on them?  Other celebs have reacted in various ways….often negatively.  But negative is not in Il Volo vocabulary.
Only time will tell what the long term results will be, but we are confident that our guys intrinsic values will be maintained.  It will be a challenge to be sure.  Will they retain the humility that they have shown….the patience in greeting and interacting with the fans?…..the kindness they show to all from the very young to the very old?  Can they keep up with the pace physically and emotionally?  Being young helps, but there has to be more to it.  They seem to take their physical health seriously as shown in the workouts at the gyms wherever they go.  And we have seen evidence of attention to healthy diets.  (Provided that too much Nutella isn’t detrimental.)  They all have strong emotional ties to their families, who have been so faithful in staying up front in the boys’ lives, giving them support and continuing to be a positive influence.  These things are important, but what really counts is who they basically are…what are they made of?  What have they shown us in regard to that?
~They have proven to be adaptable to any situation into which they have been placed….they cope, they handle it admirably and they come up smiling (and singing.)
~They are devoted to their craft, continuing to study with their voice coach, because they want to be the best that they can be.  Michele Torpedine: “They are three very willing individuals who work really hard.  They are willing to face any type of sacrifice, because they want to make it.”
~They have had to be emotionally strong in order to survive the fast pace and variety of the situations into which they have been placed.
~They are ever optimistic.  They have displayed joy and anticipation in doing whatever has been expected of them regardless of wherever in the world it might be.
These things don’t even include the degree of talent that they possess.  They sing, they dance, they act—there seems to be no limit to what they are capable of.
So Tony, it would seem that your expectation of what they could accomplish was spot on.  We can’t thank you enough for getting these wonderful young men on the way to a fabulous career.  And we do mean “wonderful”….they fill us full of wonder every time we see and hear them.  You got them started, and they have continued to grow and flourish just because of who they are...the meravigliosi men of Il Volo.

Music Notes ~~ by Meheaton ~~ The North American Concert Tour ~ A Look Back

Il Volo Flight Crew  ~ We Are Love September  29, 2013 Music Notes   –    Myron Heaton

NORTH AMERICAN CONCERT TOUR  –    A Look Back

Tonight, September 29 in Wallingford, CT, marks the final concert of  Il Volo’s North American Concert Tour.   Borrowing from experiences of our friends who attended each of the concerts and my own experiences at several others, I thought I would review the whole adventure.

Venues

The concert venues ranged from classic theaters like the Chicago Theater, Heinz Concert Hall, Fox Theater and Radio City Music Hall  to large arena-style or open-air set-ups like Concorde or Toronto.   In terms of acoustics and environment, I would probably place the Chicago and Radio City Music Hall at the top of my list for choice places to perform for Il Volo.  RCMH has the added extra incredible history in New York that makes it extra special.   Earlier in the tour, my favorite place was the Comerica in Phoenix.

Technical Aspects

Il Volo brings its own sound equipment,  lighting equipment,  staging equipment (platforms, stairs, large screens and LED light curtain) and other decorations for the stage.  The sound system was very good quality, although sometimes balance between instrumental and singers needed some attention.  That can depend on the venue.

General lighting and special effects lighting was very good and very interesting most of the time.  Sometimes the follow spots were not “following” correctly, but they are local people who run those usually, not someone familiar with the blocking of the program.

I found the staging to be much more effective this year than last season.  The premise of three screens and stairs was still there but use of the round platform in the center and curved stairs really helped add class.  Beautiful stage work.  Also, the staging of the boys was much better this year with better usage of the stage space and more interaction with the audience as well as between themselves.  In most venues they were able to come out into the audience which is always exciting.

Artistic aspects

In regards to the music repertoire, I think we all agree that this is where Il Volo has no peer in this business.  They start with 200 hundred songs and narrow down to 40 of the best  and then refine to the 26 they actually use.  The boys choose, and all three must agree on each song.  They pick beautifully written, well crafted songs with beautiful melodies, great harmony and sweeping lyrical lines; songs with strong texts that say something. These songs receive great treatment with wonderful arrangements and beautiful orchestrations.  Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis oversee this part of the work, and they are very good at it.

This year’s North American tour saw some of the best of last year added to the best of this year:  this year’s “Luna Nascosta” with last year’s “Tous les Visages de l’Amour”,  and this year’s “Il Canto” along with “E Pie Ti Penso.”  And of course, the wonderful comparison/translation of “O Sole Mio” becoming “It’s Now or Never”  and  “Torna a Surriento” becoming “Surrender.”  The “accidental song”,  “El Triste,” was a great addition along with the great  “Il Mondo.”

The classic solos were so superb, displaying the power of Piero’s “No Puede Ser,” the emotion of Ignazio’s, “Caruso,” and the raw passion of Gianluca’s, “En Aranjuez con tu Amor.”   The new pop song solo this year, “Night and Day,” gave us Ginaluca’s taste of the great Cole Porter channeled through Frank Sinatra, and it was wonderful.

For the next tour starting in Guadalajara, the music will change a little bit. Some songs will be dropped and some that are in English or Italian will be in Spanish.

In singing and performance, this is another place where Piero, Ignazio and Gianluca have no peer.  They are called young men, but no; I’m going to make this point and say, ” teenage boys.”  In terms of maturity of the human voice  (35 years),  they are still teen voices to a certain degree, but that is what makes them so incredible.   They are not 35 year olds, but they sound like they are at least 25 or 30.  Such rich, full sound, great tonal control and fantastic breath support.  I cannot say enough about the wonderful singers and really fine musicians these guys are.

It is so wonderful that they have real talent.  They do not need “autotune” to sing in tune.  They can actually read music, not just guitar chords.  They can sing a capella and rule the day.  There is nothing fake about these gentlemen.  Then you add that to the wonderful personality and unique character each of them is and, oh my god!

This North American tour should have gone to some other Midwestern cities (that we have all discussed) during this tour because this series helped raise the standards of popular music in this country even to certain degree.  It really is hard to go back to listening to other groups of the current scene.

If I am pressed to make a choice, I would say that the Radio City Music Hall concert was their best and certainly the climax of this tour.

I will be anxious to hear from the concerts in Latin America.

Thanks, Myron!

As always, everyone ask questions and discuss! 🙂
